Hi there,
This is probably a daft question, but how do I completely turn off the device? At the moment if I press the silver power button; it just turns off the backlight the way it does if you close the lid. It's not THAT much of a problem, just a huge drain on battery power.
Any ideas would be great,
Ta
You can't turn the device off completely like a regular phone. If you press the silver button once quick it will put the device into low power standby mode. The backlight AND screen should turn off. If you hold the silver button for longer only the backlight will go off which is different.
There are also a number of power saving options in the settings which will determine how long the backlight is turned off and how long the device will go into standby automatically.

I keep finding the backlight on my XDA II keeps turning itself off, I have to go to the backlight menu and I find the "on battery power" backlight setting is set to minimum. It does this randomly with a fully charged battery. Might have to buy a torch if it keeps this up!!! Any ideas?
I thought I had the same problem, but it turned out to be my own fault.
My XDA II would be off and I'd press the [Power] button, to turn it on ... no backlight. I discovered, quite by accident, that if you press and hold the power button, it in fact turns off the backlight.
So ... when turning it on, make sure you just press the [Power] button and DON'T linger.

ardarby is quite right. It's a great option once you know about it to save battery... I use it all the time now, when I'm outdoors if you push and hold in the power button it turns off the back light. If you want it back on just do the same.. Push and hold the power button...
Nice one!
Cheers! I was on the verge of a 20 minute wait to speak to Orange support, thinking I had a hardware fault!
I had the same thing when I had my XDAI. Strangely it seemed to happen every time my gf had been using it, and in the end I worked out she had assumed to turn it "off" it was the same as Nokia's where you have to hold the power button down.
Saved me a similar call to o2!

thanks for the hint, I had the same problem with my qtek 1010, that I got mad at my kids (poor kids) every time they used it I get it back with no back light. It is a bit different with the 1010, you press for power, and then you can toggle between back light on/off by a second long press on the power button.
Well, now I see no need to buy a new one
this forum is superb! My problem with backlight off solved again
Thanks all
Hi All,
My Wizard is set to turn the screen off after a minute of inactivity.
To get it back on, I have to press the power button.
I've checked in backlight and power settings and have it set to allow a screen tap to turn the backlight on, but it's not working - well, if the backlight's off but the screen's on it works ok, but I want a tap to turn the screen and the backlight on together. At the moment I have to press the power button, which upsets Pocket Player MP3 playback...or I can press a hardware button, but again, this tends to interrupt playback of music as all the buttons are mapped to something.
Seems a simple request, am I missing anything? This is under the Mr Clean ROM, if it makes a difference.

Once the screen goes off, the phone is "sleeping". The only way I know of to turn it on at this point is to tap the power button. To do what you want would be turn turn off the screen going into sleep mode, but that will come at the expense of your battery life. Start>Settings>Power>Advanced then uncheck the Turn off device under On Battery Power.
device lock(s)
A halfway solution, you could turn the screen off using the device lock app, which includes screen off. Then when you press the power button it only effects the screen and not anything which is running. The second one is very good for listening to music with, assuming you volume control button isn't broken like mine
Boys a very odd htc elf. For a period not more 'wanted to learn to be turned on, then magically turned on, now I have tried to replace the battery Tambone and again will not turn on more' charged battery but nothing you hear and the speaker when you press the power button but not lit. Help me
Are you able to go into the bootloader mode?
Press the camera key and the power key together.
Hi all,
My uni's power button now acts really weird. sometimes when I press it, instead of suspend the device, it turns off the backlight, when I press it again, it turns the back light on again....
Now this is not always the case, if I press it multiple times, let's say I press it 10 times, 7 out of 10 it will switch the backlight and 3 out 10 it will power on and off as it supposed to.
Anybody has any clue what's going on here? I mean is it a software issue or hardware wear..?
Thanks Guys!
The power button will turn on/off the back light when it is held down for a second or two.
Sounds like your power button has got a bit sticky. If able, take Uni apart and clean it up a bit around the button.
very inspiring, will try that, report result later. 8)
Hello,
I have a strange problem with my Nexus. My power button is acting strange. Long hold brings up power menu, but:
- short press does not turn screen off
- Smart cover also does not turn screen off
- double tap to status bar does not turn screen off
- 15 seconds of timeout also does not turn screen off.
What is happening? Thank you.
So your screen will not turn off at all besides powering off the device?

Click to collapse
Thats right.
Well i don't think the power button itself is the problem since it works to power it off and on, and since the screen wont sleep by other methods either.
Did you flash a new ROM, kernel, or other mod before this happened?
