Whats up guys
Is anyone interested in developing an app that will automatically update your wallpaper to show your location on a map? Specifying the interval and everything.
Would probably eat up battery..what do you guys think?
Joe
Interesting idea, but some observations:
You need to have the map at least for the home city and be able to locate your coordinates.
As you mentioned, battery life may be drastically shortened.
While in a building you won't be able to get a fix.
It may interfere and periodically slow down other processes.
Quite honestly, putting a map as a wallpaper is not exactly attractive.
I usually know where I am
Ahhhhhhh, where am I?? Whew, thanks wallpaper! Just kidding, cool idea, your better off just using GPS Today, it has a plugin that can obtain a fix at set intervals and display the info your looking for, including direction and speed. You can also pull up the map from the plugin, and see how far you are from the closest contact.

Just an idea, and very much from a functionality down, rather than architechture up perspective, but wouldn't it be cool to have an app that fired off task reminders based on your location (GSM/UMTS cell or GPS) rather than a time. That way you could get a reminder to 'pick up laundry' whenever you went to the high street or 'check you zipper' every time you left the loo!
I'm no developer so I'm not in a possition to do anythign about this but I though someone else might.

Hmm, interesting idea. There is already an app that changes phone profiles on certain locations (GSM cells). So, I guess it is not impossible.
I think it's called cell profiler. I though something that hooks in to the PIM a bit more would be cool, specially in these days of small UMTS cells and devices with GPS built in.
I love that idea. My ppc is like my second brain for that kind of stuff.
I am a prospective buyer of the Touch HD. The first thing I was wondering is if you can choose settings when you schedule a meeting. For example if you have an important meeting, you might want to switch off all incoming call and message alerts. Can it be set so that it does this automatically when the meeting starts?
Also, is there any sort of application that uses the GPS so that you can choose settings depending on location. For example you might want to make it so that your phone automatically goes on silent whenever you are in the office or, if you are a student, a lecture theatre, maybe even in your bedroom. Perhaps that is a little far fetched, but it would be cool.
There are certainly applications that do your first request.
I've not seen any that do the second based on GPS but I have seen them that check the cell station and decide on which is nearest.

If you have all your meetings setup on your phone's calendar, then you can use a prebuilt sound profile called "Automatic" which changes phone to "vibrate" automatically during your appointments.

Wow ..... this would be cool, but also very big-brother-ish !! Have you seen a recent movie called "Eagle Eye" ?
Cheers !!

check the program "Phone Alarm Pro"... if I understood your request correctly, that should be able to do what you want (change profile depending on meeting status as well as location by network antennas and GPS as well)... The program is highly configurable, fully skinnable and there is a full functioinal 14-days trial available.
I haven't tried yet, but with the gps there maybe two problems:
1) the gps reception inside buildings may be poor or may not work at all
2) if gps receiver is switched on all the time, the battery may be empty really quickly...
regards jan
Wow that does look like the perfect program. Although I don't have a Touch HD and don't know anything about how something would work with its interface etc. Has anyone tried Phone Alarm Pro because it looks like something I might buy if/when I get an HD? It looks like it does exactly what I had in mind.
I see what you are saying about GPS, how accurate would the location from other methods be. It mentions cell brodcasts? It does say that is checks your location every 2 mins, it might power off the gps at other times and the regularity of this might be customisable, I don't know.

It is a very good applicatin wih not much battery drain, a guy posted in this forum maybe 3 days ago how smart he configured Alarm pro so he had a least over 60% battery power after 30 hours without charging...
Here is the thread: Wow....
Hi,
I've just finished an app for windows mobile specifically for skiers that allows you to view your average and top speed, as well as the distance covered for your last run. It also keeps track of your total distance traveled as well as your highest speed ever achieved.
All information is displayed on one easy to read screen. It has a "reset run" feature which allows you to clear your last run statistics ready to collect data for your next run, or to challenge your friend to beat your record.
Version 1.0.1.0
Features Added:
* Option to use Metric system(km, km/h, meters)
* Notification will now pop-up when an Update is available
Bugs Fixed:
* Fixed bug where app wouldn't shutdown correctly on first registration
* Fixed bug where some devices were unable to display altitude
* Minor tweeks
There is a feature limited trial verion which is restricted to viewing your average speed for a run, your current altitude and your direction of travel.
Attached is a screen shot. It runs in a trial mode until registered. To register I'm asking for a donation of £1.50 to help support ongoing development.
For more information or to download my app please go to my site: http://www.fehnerssoftware.co.uk
Awesome. I will definitely give this a try next time i'm on the mountain.

If you do let me know what sort of speed you get up to 47mph is my pb so far.
Check your PM's
Is this app fast enough to keep up with a vehicle speed? It would be great for checking speed and heading in a car or motorcycle. You could change some wording and rename to something like MyAutoBuddy and release it as another app!
I'd love to have that for my phone

Yup It can keep track of vehicle speed easily, thats mostly how I tested the app out I've only actually been skiing with it once
For a vehicle what would you want to see? currently it shows average speed, top speed for run, top speed ever reached, distance that run, total distance over all runs, direction of travel, and altitude.
Allthough designed for skiing it can be used for running, cycling etc.
Compile Maps?
I went boarding last month and searched around for piste maps for my sat nav, but no joy.....
Think you could develop this to record the route taken and then view on google maps for example......?
If you got enough users to be able to upload data it wouldn't be long before you compiled piste routes and speed records etc......?
Just a thought......

I can add the ability to log the gps data so that it can be viewed in google earth, google maps etc.
First post updated with change history
Alright so first off, this is my first attempt at creating an application/widget for android. I'm better at the design aspect than the actual coding, but would like to learn how to develop apps for future projects. I am attempting to make an analog clock widget that will provide weather information in the center of the clock.
The weather info would include A) Graphic indicating the weather condition B)Current Temperature C) Name of current location.
In the future I would like to implement other features to this clock however, I believe that for now what I have listed is more within grasp. Now I've read the developers guide (majority of it) and have successfully created the analog clock part of it (because it's really easy lol) however, when it comes to creating the weather part I am having some real difficulties. Attached is a mock up of the clock to give you an idea of the final product, remember the clock works fine but the weather doesn't also the text seen in the picture was added later in Photoshop but shows what I want it to end up looking like. Also the graphic in the middle will change according to the current condition.
I've been attempting to use Jeff Sharkey's Forecast Widget found here, as a general starting point for the weather, but I've been running into issues. First of all when just using his base script with a little alteration (mostly renaming package and import stuff) the widget doesn't load it just says "Forecast Error." And even though it's a tutorial there are some things I'm just not getting and is causing some major headaches lol. So I'm not sure if this is a good starting off point.
Alright, now I have no real idea how to get the weather part working lol. That being said, I would appreciate some help/advice with getting this going. First of all I would like to know how (or at least get pointed in the right direction) to get the weather working. I don't really know where to start for the weather though and it's causing lots of frustration and wasted hours. I know I'm a noob at this but I am willing to learn lol so please any help or advice at all would be appreciated. I've been trying this on my own for the last few days but have gotten nowhere.
Here are some things I would like to specifically know.
A) How to get the text to display current location and temp and how to place it where its at in the example
B) How to have the graphics changed according to current weather condition
C) How to give it basic weather widget functionality (ie: on setup choose location or search location, click on widget to give 3 day forecast etc...)
Thank you again for any help/advice/comments
I just though the Google Now backgrounds might make a nice dynamic background for my N7.
Does anyone know if anyone has done this?
I use paperland but I find animated backgrounds to be a bit laggy on the N7 so the GNow one might be a nice compromise.
I know blackbear has a gnex and has done this. Not sure if it was dynamic. I think so. I came across his g+ page and saw that he did it a few weeks ago.
I found this site, which appears to have everything I need to make it happen
http://mycolorscreen.com/2012/08/10/google-now-live-2/
I went there and downloaded the wallpapers and they aren't very clear they look upscaled. I really hope someone can vector those images and turn that into a functional live wallpaper, that would be outstanding. I'd rather not have to install some other apps to manage my wallpapers.
I was in London at the weekend and the top of the google now page was London themed.
Would be interesting if Google Now actually populated useful cards once in awhile.

It gives me a map and directions to appointments in my calendar, that's pretty useful to me anyway.
It also tells me what the weather was like several hours ago, which is useful if I build a time machine and just want to go back a few hours to test it.

I was working on one, but the small details weren't turning out well. So I did a basic image of the large parts and it looked alright, maybe I will upload it later
I did it guys !
