Wmwifirouter As Repeater??? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Ok...so I have a mogul phone with built in wifi but no data plan. Is it possible for me to use my cell as a repeater for my laptop if it is connected to wifi in another room to boost the signal to my laptop? Please let me know!!!
What I want to do: Use wmwifirouter as a repeater so that I can extend my wifi on the phone to my laptop (w/o data plan)

Not currently, no.

boo....can someone figure out how to do that? It looks like it would be possible with just some minor tweaking/hacking

umm.. besides wouldn't repeating a Wifi access point require yet another WiFi Adapter in the phone? if you found a MicroSD Wifi card for your mogul, you could repeat any wifi access point with ICSControl.

kinda off topic here and not sure if u knew but one of those old Linksys wireless routers can be firmware upgraded into a repeater rather easily.

new to wifi - quick question

sorry for the newb questions but couldn't find an answer searching and figured someone who knows would be able to give an answer easily
the question is, when in the office, sitting near my laptop (dell lat 620 w wifi) I connect my phone to the wifi network 'wfield1' and the display on the laptop turns green, and the phone shows the little antenna signifying wifi connectivity. ok- now does this mean
a) that all data sent/rec'd will not appear on cingulars bill?
b) will my works firewall (vpn) infringe upon my browsing (ie if I hit a blocked site will it say blocked on my phone?)
I originally thought it would but I turned wifi on and walked away from my laptop and realized that the wifi connection stayed on throughout the building so therefore it has nothing to do with my laptops connection to our vpn server then right?
if so, c) would I be able to use the phones wifi connection and then usb tether the phone to the laptop to browse on the laptop off the firewall and off cingulars rate charges? I have unlim anyway but keeping usage down seems worth the small step it takes to tether
hopefully I am at least a little accurate in my guesses and not way off wack. if anyone could drop some knowledge on me id appreciate it
Your phone's connection to WIFI has nothing to do with your laptop. It should connect to your WIFI router in your office. Your phone should display a different symbol on the top line of the LCD, rather than your regular "antenna" symbol.
You need to check the above before you can confirm if you are actually connected to your WIFI router.
When you are on WIFI, it is subjected to the same firewall regulations as your laptop
yes it changes from the normal "phone" antenna to the wifi icon, i do know that much.
however i'm still unsure of whether or not it is using routered data vs cingular data. i think it is using the wifi data because as i said it is showing the wifi symbol and not the E or G that shows up when connected to cingulars service
and i think i mispoke, i dont actually use the wifi on the laptop to connect to the internet. i need to dial up with a verizon card, and it connects that way, and also launches a VPN which i think is what regulates the internet usage.
i am less worried about the routers firewall than i am my (proxy?) servers abilty to record sights that i visit, ie the forums/ebay. if i visit those on wifi and my server could see that (not worried about the wifi router seeing it since i am in different offices a lot), i will just stick with using GPRS/EDGE. confusing? sorry
If it was using Cingular data, you would get a message that your phone is 'Connecting to Cingular GPRS' ..in which case you would be billed, you don't get billed for using wifi because you are NOT using cingulars network to connect to the internet, you are using your own.
after checking it again, it seems that i cannot get to the iinternet with the wifi alone. i turned off the phone and had wifi enabled and could not connet to the internet.
so normally, if it wasn't a work firewalled network, wifi will let you get to the internet without being charged via cingular. got it, thanks all
hey i was going to do wifi connection to my work laptop too till i decided its pointless cause im sitting right in front of the thing and if i actually walked away from it its going to be a decent distance and the wifi wouldnt connect anyway.
besides theres not a whole lot you can do with the connection other than read a web page or browse a network folder.

This is a BIG Deal!!

This phone doesn't support ad hoc wifi connections? I'm currently on travel overseas and I can't seem to share an Internet connection with my laptop (connected via LAN) or iPhone 3GS (local 3G service). Has anyone been able to detect an ad hoc wifi network with this phone.
I can detect ad hoc networks with 3rd party wifi apps on the marketplace but when I attempt to connect, it directs me to the general wifi settings screen where the network is gone!!
Anyone else with this issue?
Did you ever see that it was an international phone?
WTF?? I'm talkin about a Wifi connection here buddy...lol. The EVO 4G doesn't detect or connect to ad hoc wifi networks. That's the topic...
while i dont know if it does or doesnt...i could believe it...because there is a few phones out there that dont - blackberry is one.
The wireless tether app for Android makes it into an ad hoc device.
But the problem is that it won't DETECT an ad-hoc device. Interesting. So if I had, say a hero with WiFi tether enabled, I wouldn't be able to see the WiFi with my EVO?
I don't connect to ad-hoc networks myself, unless I"m trying to tether something (the only use I can see.) Interesting that the EVO can't see them though, they should still show up..huh.
Seems to be some type of security feature on the device (WiFi Scanner app detects) that prevents it from detecting ad hoc wireless networks. My PS3 also has the same issue. Just wanted to point it out the issue...perhaps we need to root to manually connect?
just to be clear, you're trying to share your laptops internet with your Evo?
Yes, the laptop has Internet access via LAN and I am using the built in ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) Wifi Sharing on Windows Vista. Every other device I've had before had no issue detecting the network...I can see the access point right now on my iPhone and iPod Touch :-/
Found this workaround:
http://www.soligard.com/technology/how-to-connect-htc-hero-to-ad-hoc-wifi-network/
I'll try this later and report back.
I don't know if I'm experiencing the same problem but maybe someone can tell what I'm doing wrong. I rooted my phone by unrevoked and installed the Android-Wifi-Tether program. I've activated the program and it's sending out a signal. I then use my Windows Vista comp. to located it and it shows my phone as an "Ad-Hoc Network" when I connect to it, it says your computer is not configured for this. I'm not sure now what I should do, is there a problem with my EVO, or this something I need to do with the computer.
OP you are absolutely correct. I actually was trying the exact example you stated. I had created an ad-hoc wireless hotspot/network via Wireless Tether App on my Hero and my EVO just plain did not see it. It saw a million other networks that were much farther away, but not my Hero that was right next to it. This is unfortunate. Hopefully a workaround is found soon.
A lot of devices don't connect via an Ad Hoc network... which makes me wonder what its purpose even is :/ One reason I submitted the idea (true wifi hotspot) I did to the WP7 app contest.
This is what made me return my Archos 5 Android tablet and stick to my iPod Touch.
My scenario, i have a Sprint Treo and an iPod Touch (and iPad as well) and usually turn my Treo into a wifi router via wmwifirouter and use iPod Touch this way. Been doing this for years (with other devices too like the Nokia N800/N810), and wanted to test out Android. I got the Archos 5 tablet and was saddened not to be able to use my Treo's ad-hoc wifi. Back it went.
It seems that Android devices do not connect to ad-hoc wifi networks. Shame indeed. Also i think the Zune HD does not connect to ad-hoc as well.
Is it an O.S specific issue?

Using Evo 4G with Zoom 4501 Router can you?

Hello all,
Here is my deal and hopefully someone can help.. I have an Evo 4g.. currently I do not have internet in my home (cable started getting to pricey in my area) and have rooted my phone and have been using the wifi tether app. However, I want to also share connection with other devices throughout my home, ie, 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 1 xbox360 so I purchased this Zoom 4501 wireless N router that works with 3G/4G, wifi, cable etc..
Now, I was able to connect my phone to the usb port on the router, go through the setup wizard and and was able to actually get the router up and running however, the only way to do it is by turning on the usb tether option in the settings menu.. it only works on 3G and not 4G.. when I turn on the 4G option, it says that I do have an account with sprint.. is there any other way around this? If anyone can help, let me know thanks!

C'mon man.. I'm looking for a legit solution... besides... theirs is encrypted....
Just get a wireless extender and connect all the devices to that.
EVO)))))))))Wireless extender ))))))))all your devices(no device limit) + ethernet.
http://3gstore.com/product/1813_pepwave-surf-mini-200.html I use it with my sprint mifi because I connect more than 9 devices when I'm at work. (grandfathered unlimited plan ) and the mifi only allows for 5
Hey thanks.. just got it to work, just purchased this... http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354515
seems to work pretty well... thanks for the info guys...
Just make sure only the router is connected to the evo with encryption, everything else will be handled by the repeater
Buy a router that you can put tomatousb firmware on it. Then configure the wireless as wireless bridge or client to the evo's wireless tether. Works great for me when the times my internet is down.

Wireless tether to a wireless router??

So, I'm getting a tablet and Seagates wireless hard drive to use with it. The only thing is I won't be able to tether to my phone if using the hard drive, so I was thinking of getting a mini wireless portable router.
My question is, how can I get my phone to tether to a wireless router (say a DLINK g730ap) so my tablet can access the Internet and the hard drive within the DLINK? Unless I use the Android Tether as a router, where the hard drive connects to the phone and the tablet connects to the same phone. But I don't know what the transfer speeds are going to be, I imagine it would probably be slow, but I'm not sure.
I hope this makes sense, thanks!!!

I think I understand what you want to do, and it's something I did not too long ago. I actually wanted to see if I could use Sprint Hotspot on my EVO, tethering at 4G, as a replacement for my xfinity internet. The problem is, the router I use requires an Ethernet connection as it's internet input, so I wasn't even sure it was possible. But, apparently, it is. I had to change the firmware on my router, though. If you're trying to do something similar, that's likely what you'll have to do. I got my modded firmware from dd-wrt. But there are a LOT of warnings, and just like upgrading the firmware on your phone can lead to a brick if done incorrectly, the same goes for the router.
I actually couldn't get it to work using Wireless Tether for root users; it only worked with the native Sprint Hotspot, so unless you're paying for the service, it might not be possible. And your bandwidth will be very limited, so don't expect very fast transfer speeds.
Router
You have 2 separate hurdles to cross-
1. DD-WRT compatible Router to handle all 3 devices communication
2. "Wireless Tether" does not create an actual router, it creates an Ad-Hoc based connection using basic ICS, and typical network/routing functions are not available. If you don't want to use Sprints Hotspot app, you will need to get specific instructions on DD-WRT's forum on how to properly configure this type of setup and use your router as a gateway. I'm sure the information is probably posted already somewhere over there. Head over there and start digging. They are to routing as XDA is to mobile phones.
im running this setup now with my phone and xbox and whatever else. like has been mentioned you need to put ddrt on your router and configure it as an ap bridge. then you have to link it to the ....wtf..hold on ill link you.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge#Instructions
Yeah that's the way to go, I use ddwrt in client mode so it pulls my wireless tether from my phone and sends the signal out through the cat5 or 6 cable to whatever is wired to the router. But repeater/bridge mode would be needed to send wired signal and also repeat the signal through the antenna for broadcasting wifi from the router.

I can't figure out how to use this. I turn on WiFi tether, Wifi itself turns off on the phone. Now, I have a WNR3500L with the toastman tomato mod, and I can't figure out how to get it to work with this.

Running 4GLTE through router (USB DONGLE/CLOCKWORKMOD)

Hello everyone!
So where I am living I cannot get reliable internet service and currently have Hughesnet (satellite isp) that I want to stray from. I have picked up a prepaid true unlimited data plan from Metropcs and want to use it as my default isp as the speeds are astronomical compared to Hughesnet. They are of course limited in usage for tethering and I would have to use a masking application and have chosen Clockworkmod Tether. What I want to do is run a USB dongle to my router (ASUS RT-N56U), connected to my phone (SAMSUNG-SM-G900A), running Android 5.0 with Clockworkmod Tether. Is this possible to do as the router doesn't have a sister application with the phone i.e Pdanet+ needs a windows application running to work?
All feedback is welcome!
So I found a video that kind of explains how to do so but I still have questions. With the process he is demonstrating the phone is using the wifi hotspot option to broadcast signal to the router. My question is.. with all the tether masking apps (PDAnet, FoxFi, Clockwork) you need to connect via USB to work. How would I get around this?
