considering getting tomtom5 for my mda compact.
anyone know whether its compatible, has anyone got it?
Should be. TomTom 3 and 4 worked fine.
By the way, Bakonl's release of TomTom 5 was just posted on alt.binaries.warez.pocketpc.gps, along with a few maps.
Benelux map only.. :x
TT5 does work
and not only benlux maps are posted. italy, france, germany, spain, uk are posted as well. rest will be posted as well i guess.
anyway, waiting for my legal TT5 to arrive (with the bt gps), woei =)
I can't get it working... I tried installing in the program files and in the storage card directories but it crashes at the end of the tutorial, just after that the "Welcome to TomTom Navigator" message appears in the map screen.
I can't see the map nor the GPS is able to connect (TomTom "3" Navigator Wireless).
I can't find any registry entry, I modified the currentmap.dat in order to point to /storage card/italia-map.
Anyone was able to reproduce my problem and to solve it?
Yeah, I noticed there are a few maps out. I'd like Scandinavia tho Seems like a buggy version too.. Crashes often.
Yeah... reeeeally buggy, I tried to check the post in the alt.warez.pocketpc.gps newsgroup for infos about bugs/problems etc. but I can't find it in my nssp server and using the web I'm not able to see the post (I can just see the header) so... I still can't use it  ; maybe it could be a bad installer, I noticed that sometimes it won't install some cabs from the cd, or maybe it's just the italian map which is corrupt... who knows? 8)
I guess the release on alt.binaries is a preview or beta version.
The official release of Tomtom 5 will be end of June.
Im still waiting for Destinator PN on emule...
Where can i find the TomTom 5?
I have installed TomTom 5 to see if it works, I'm unable to connect my BlueTooth GPS (Holux GPSlim 236). The port does not show up on the device list under Buzz WM2005.
Does anybody know how to change this?

I had the same problem.... go to the bluetooth com ports, change the GSM to use COM8.
Then start -> settings -> gps, on the first tab set com4 and on the second tab tom com8. The thrid tab should have the checkbox set.
Now reset your device.
Start tomtom, goto your GSM setup, choose Other bluetooth, select COM4.
Now exit tomtom and reset your device.
Start tomtom and wait a while (can take a few minutes for it to find the GPS).
This worked for me (you need the resets in order to detect the com ports!!)
Ikkuh
@Ikkuh,
How can I change the Com port settings on my MDA Compact? I can't seem to understand you're solution. I need Com 8 and TT5 only has 2,4,5 and 9.
Thanks in advance!

There is a serial port multiplexer build in just for the GPS. It is under settings -> GPS, if you use this, you can create a virtual serial port, and attach it to the hardware GPS. If you do this and reset the device, the virtual GPS will show up in TomTom (in my case it did ;-) )
Ikkuh
I must admit dickr43 has got a point. Even though you are trying to be helpful, Ikkuh, it's a bit hard to understand.

Doesn't exist either. Must be some third party app you have installed...
dickr43,
Try removing your GPS pairing from the Magician. Go select the 'Bluetooth Setting' icon under Settings/System and make sure both the serial ports are activated. Note which COM port is 'Outbound', then re-pair with your GPS device. Start TT and in the GPS settings panel, you should get things running by selecting the COM port that was marked for Outbound.
Unless you are running some third party software with virtual BT COM ports, that should get you up and running. If you are, try each COM port one by one. Don't hurry through the ports, but give it time to connect. 5-10 seconds at least. Also make absolutely sure your GPS is within range and has a satellite fix, or you are wasting your time.
I cant use tomtom 5 as a route map
I just want to use it sometimes without the gps module is it possible. Because with the older version it was possible to select a GPS simulator.
THX
The "unofficial" versions of TomTom5 doing the rounds seem to have been taken from beta builds. I installed without any problems, but noticed a number of bugs (not recognising GPS, the program freezing, picking up wild GPS info, settings not sticking)... sometimes you'd think it was working, and you'd think you'd got it stable, but then they'd fall down.
I've tried 3 different versions doing the rounds right now and none of them are stable. I'll wait a month or so for a more finished release is available.
i got my hands on TT5 aswell, the program looks realy nice and lot improvement to TT3, but as mentioned above, it's not very stable, spontain exiting of TT5 is not cool when youre in the middle of no where.
my gps was recognized directley,
i just went to BT settings and checked Com5 and a messege apeared that i must bond with a compatible device, so i bonded with my GPS reciever and in the TT wizard i could chose Com5 and it connected right away, much easyer than TT3
regards.
Hi,
I am considering getting TOMTOM5 for my T-Mobile MDA Compact and would like to use this in my car. Does anyone know or can provide screen shots of what the display looks like? Is it easily readable while driving?
Thanks

Got my htc tytn loaded totom 5 onto it and guess what bluetooth gps doesn't work with it! Cannot get correct comm port .According to HTC TomTom know about this. Just hoping somebody already has a fix for this?
Had no problems pairing my BT Slim GPS with my Vario II, TomTom runs fine.
What GPS receiver you using ?
works fine on my xda trion as well.......im using tom tom 5.21 with BT-338 gps receiver.......im also using com port 0......you basically have to pair it and then add outgoing port as com port 0.....and during the installation on tom tom make sure you choose com port 0......that worked for me anyways....hope that helps.

Thanks guys have re-installed tomtom and now it comes up with com prt 0.Probably didn't install correctly first time .Now up and running .Fantastic!!!!

Hi everyone - I am having a similar problem
I have a new GPS receiver and have established a bluetooth partnership and done the outgoing port to com0 which is the default.
Tom Tom is installed and when I try and configure it I am not seeing all the options shown on the website. It just says no gps detected or something similar. I am sure its something simple.
Can anyone help please?

There's a program CreatePorts that is floating around (you'll have to do a search) that allows TomTom to see additional com ports in the Bluetooth GPS setup. I used this same program on my Samsung i730, and now on the 8525.
You just paid your GPS with the PPC, create the outbound port (in my case I used com 2), run CreatePorts, and then go in to TomTom GPS setup.
Once you get it set up, you don't have to run the app anymore, and TomTom works great
OUCH

I tried running this but i can still only assign certain points from my bluetooth manager and dont have these displayed on the tomtom menu.
When you go into the GPS Status settings on Tomtom and tap configure, have you tried looking to see which com ports it lists and then going back to the bluetooth settings and doing trial and error to allocate any of those port numbers as an outgoing port for your GPS unit?
For my genuine Tomtom GPS unit, I did not even have to set up a port, I just had to pair the device but when I used a friends alternative brand of GPS unit for a short while, I was only able to get that one working under Com port 4. I can't quite remember but it may even have been a case that Com 4 only became visible in the Tomtom GPS configure menu after I had allocated it as an outgoing port for the GPS device (sorry, it is a while back so I can't quite remember the order in which I set it up)
Hope you get it sorted
arghh
I a so annoyed. I did this and had no luck. Later on I did something and got the option for port 2 and used it and it was great. I had to do a soft reset for something else and I cant do it again. tried everything.
MMMM
Happy yet frustrated
I have deleted create ports from my device as it only works once. I have reset my device. I reinstalled createports and extracted the file. I then saw port 2 straight away - the one that had been missing in tomtom.
The only problem is that if I do a soft reset I have to do that again!
It is very frustrating trying to get some of these things working. Have you thought about upgrading to Tomtom 6? you may find you have less problems getting the pairing and ports working right.
Failing that, I am sure you will be able to get it working again, just keep trying all the com ports one by one until you find one that appears in the Tomtom configuration. Like I said, on my XDA Vario II (Hermes) I managed to get it working on Com 4 and when I had an XDA Mini S (Wizard) I seem to remember that it was either Com 6 or Com 7 which worked on that one.
You might want to check the bluetooth settings for security and beam as well. Try turning security off (ie. passkey required off) and make sure the beam setting is ticked to receive all incoming beams.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you

Pairing TOMTOM 6 with Bluetooth GPS
For all of you that are having problems pairing your GPS Bluetooth receiver with your Hermes see the instruction set below:
#Hermes can not be in flight Mode#
1st: Run BTHTools1100.exe

2nd:
Pair them in Bluetooth Manager

Holux (outgoing port com4)
Incoming Port (com8)

Programs set GPS program port to Com 8
Hardware set GPS hardware port to Com 4
baud rate 4800
If GPS program is not seen in settings\Connections

Go to Hkey_local_Machine\ControlPanel\GPS settings\ creat (make new) "Group" with Dword data =2
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In TomTom chose:
Bluetooth GPS
Com4
should be working Now
Pairing TOMTOM 6 with Bluetooth GPS (easy) - Kaiser
First after reading the posts I thought I had to reinstall Tom Tom or install another software. Luckily, I paused and read the message when I was about to configure my other bluetooth receiver. It said, first you must establish your bluetooth connection. Well, I lied coz I did try to go on and couldnt find COM 0 or whatever you guys have said.
But that's what I did, eventually. Paired the device as BT GPS, check the serial connection (not sure if secure connection needs to be checked but I left it unchecked to find out later). After that go to com port tab, and click add new port ie selected COM0.
Then go back to TT6 (restarted in my case), and to other bluetooth gps receiver then found COM 0 in there. Voila!!
Chose COM0, but still got no gps device message. Waited for about 2 mins while reading further into the posts and now my TT6 is working.
You could call that strike of luck I dont really care but yeah.. saving some batt power on my kaiser for the bank holiday;s trip. Have a great one everyone!!
P/s: Mine is O2 stellar on Dutty's great work.
Com 4 is the only one that works with Schaps 3.54
I've just installed tomtom 6 on my pda and also got it all paired up with by bluetooth gps. Also opened com0 as an outgoing port. I can see in the gps status screen the little yellow and blue circle going round, but i cant seem to pick up any sattelites, have kept in the same position for over 40mins. I used the same gps unit on my old MDA III pda and it worked perfect.
Is there anything else i need to do?
You could try downloading and trying VisualGPSce or summat to test the output from the GPS BT unit, just in case it's a TT issue.
You might even have some sort of other SW on your PPC confirming the information received from your BT GPS
Have tried the above program but dont get any response from it. Not too sure what the problem could be.
Anyone else with a similar issue?
So you've switched on your bluetooth gps unit and paired the two, and you know that's all working. Except that no gps unit can see it?
I've paired up my Vario II with the GPS unit. Opened and outgoing Com port (i've tried com0 and com4). Now i start tomtom through preeference etc i select the correct com port. Now the yellow/black icon starts to move, but even after an hour of standing in one place in the open air i dont get any gps response.
And i used the same gps unit on TT5.
Connecting a non-tomtom gps to tomtom 6
1. You need to pair your bluetooth GPS to your TYTn
2. you need to connect it to a com-port (take a high port like 9)
3. start tomtom and set a non-tomtom bluetooth gps at com 9
thats it.
hmmm, i've tried the above too on com9 but no change. The gps device does work as it worked with TT5.

My COM Settings
As a novice, I went through a lot of trial and error before getting my GPS to work.
My COM Ports settings now work fine:
BT GPS (COM9)
Incoming Port (COM2)
Have you set an incoming as well as an outgoing port? Maybe a silly question.
beam
try turning off beam receive all incoming beams this makes it work on xda1 this might help

You shouldn't need an incoming port.. only outgoing.. (at least on the 10 or so BT GPS unit's ive tried none have needed it)
==========
(Also note on the hermes you cant use COM8 reliably as it messes with the USB Modem options as they seem to use COM8 internally so stay clear of that one)
VisualGPSce doesnt seem to work properly on my hermes.. I use free.mytracking.net's client to test gps easily.. just set the right com port and hit start.. ignore the user/pass bit as thats not important.. if you have a good signal you will get a green bar and number of satellites if communications are working and a red bar and 0 satellites if they are not.
Make sure you do not have the "secure connection" box ticked in port settings, otherwise you will not connect.
Tytn has an interesting feature: To pick up a satellite signal with TomTom 6 the radio of the Tytn must be switched ON. If the radio is switched off no signal is beeing received from the bluethooth device.
Thanks

Hi..When I set up my GPS device on my m3100 Tomtom nav 6 will work fine. However the next time I use it tomtom fails to pick up the gps device. The only way I can then get it working is by removing the gps device & re-adding it.
Anyone come across a similar problem, used to work fine on my old m600.
i have come across the same problem. I have to wait for a long time for the device to be connect with the gps receiver. Sometimes i get connected however the receiver cannot get gps signals. Someone plz guide us???
i've got a 838Pro with TomTom V6.010 and The BT-74R Bluetooth GPS Receiver i pick up of ebay.
works great no problems !!!
yep i got a Generic ebay ($60 AUD) bluetooth GPS and the only problem i have is running the POIs with the maps causes tomtom to freeze up (using version 6.03)
My TomTom only freezes sometimes during start up, but i've notice this happens when i have alot of apps open running in the background.
however thanks to this site i no longer have this issue as i've have installed "HTC X-Button 1.5"
thanks.
I think my problem is different to others, it not that it can take a long time to connect its that It will only connect the frist time I try after adding the GPS device as a serial port. I have been using COM 0.

Hi Guys!
Does anybody have experience with X2 GPS.
I can't make it work with TomTom or iGO.
It works fine with Google and GPS Test, but TomTom and iGO say GPS not found.
Any ideas?
What TOMTOM version do you use? In 7.9 there's an option called Other NMEA Receiver, when you select that it should detect your GPS automatically, and how long do you wait after selecting the device? Have you downloaded quickfix update?..sometimes it takes a while before it gets a signal..you can check if tomtom recognizes your GPS if the yellow/black ball is spinning at your GPS config
It seems that the Copilot live works properly. I have the same issue with TomTom and Igo. I tried to change SYS on Igo, forcing COM4 port but seems disconnected.
If you select in TomTom the other NMEA GPS and set up the UART Serial Port, seems that the GPS work but it disconect each second...
Any Ideas??

GPSGate solves the problem!
I installed the GpsGate 2.6 but once I start the phone, it seems that is working, but sometimes the apps crash and you need to restart the X2. I tried too in Safe Mode, but the result was negative.......... Some Idea??

I couldn't get it to work yesterday.
Today I installed the latest update from SonyEricsson, i then installed GpsGate 2.6.
After this it worked.
I have the update applied too, but seems the app crash..... I have the battery level down now, I will try to restart the service once I finish the charge. Until the crash, the GpsGate and Nvigation software (TomTom and IGO) works properly.
Thanks....

Thx for the advise!
Yes, the version is 7.9 and I have tried both built-in GPS and Other NMEA Receiver (with proper COM port) - no success!
I have waited long enough - I tried with Google and it was OK, plus I know how long it may take - I was using same version of TomTon on HTC Diamond, so...
Thanks anyway.

I tried the GPSGate and it seems that this might be the solution BUT... You need to run it manualy (not to run after soft reset) - in this case it seems that it works. This applies to version 2.5 since this is what I have.
Will continue testing.

to make igo8 work you have to edit sys.txt file

This is exactly what I had in mind - you should not use this option. It seems that GPSGate runs before GPS device is available so it doesn't work.
Meanwhile I tried the settings posted by og33 - it worked perfect so THANKS!

Also have an X2 with TomTom and GpsGate, and it loses signal after 10 minutes. That's very annoying because I don't have any other navigation software and my Tytn2 just died...
Anyone knows the gps comm port number on X2? I found a soft called PortSplitter that is similar to gpsgate, but needs to manually enter the comm port.
Hello again.
I have copied the file in the igo folder and I continues with the problem, the situation is similar to "astm13", the connection with the GPS is lost 10 minutes after the "navigator" is running. Always 10 minutes.
Please help me!!!!
Try to change the input in GPS Gate : use WM GPS instead of GPD9. Seems to be working, I'll test during a long driving.
Edit : Just tried today during 2 hours, worked perfectly! Tomtom never lost the signal.
Hi All !
Does it make any difference where you put the code in the sys.txt for iGo8.
I have tried this and still no go. Google maps works perfectly, however iGo
any help is really appreciated.
Good news there may be a way to fix this.
Try the following: go to Settings / External GPS and from programs change the GPS program port to COM8.
For me that did the trick and now my iGo8 is working like a charm
I am using a X2 with official MR1 software installed.
If anything else comes up I'll post here
