Which phone to replace my Universal - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I have loved this phone but it is getting too tired and I need something up to date with more power and storage. Alas HTC don't seem to be doing anything comparable.
The latest Athena is too big for me and anyway no UK network seem to be providing it?
The Kaiser seems neat but the screen is too small, any thoughts anyone?
Jon

I have a Jasjar too but I dont think there is any replacement for it yet. Its a powerhouse truely meant for corporate people or the people who love to experiment.

Stick with JasJar (Uni, O2 Exec etc), give it a ROM upgrade, new body if you feel it looks too rough and enjoy. I know I am sticking with mine, especially considering I fully assembled it from parts, so now it's my baby in more ways than one

I hawe set the same question on another forum.
And the answer was the same.
No one has the will or space to carry Shift or Athena they are just too big.
Uni is the biggest thing i can wear in my pants expect my JoyStick offcourse.
I heard today that Htc is planning to release 10new devices this year so we can only hope there will be something like Universal Enchanced like they done whit Advantage.

I'm now using a T-mobile Vario III (Kaiser) as a replacement for my Exec and I'm very pleased with it. Yes the screen is smaller but it's improved clarity along with the general ease of use of the device means it's not too much of a disadvantage for me.
I'm still keeping my Exec though, it makes an excellent satnav and micro-laptop.

The only phone that can match the power and specs of the HTC Advantage X7510 & Athena as of now is the Samsung Omnia: http://samsungomnia.com/
You can check youtube for the videos and see how fast this baby works. Not to mention it supports DIVX and XVID movies out of the box, with a 5MP camera.
...

Since Samsung is contracted to make a phone that is quite similar to another phone the resemblance is uncanny isn't it?

Omnia have a latest PXA320 processor which default speed is up to 800 MHz, a 256 KB L2 cache, and a 32-bit DDR memory interface, that is more powerful with comparation of qualcomm bulls***s

how about my recommendation

The Sony Xperia is a solid, well designed phone, but one thing I noticed from watching all the videos of the demo use of the Xperia in youtube, IT IS REALLY VERY SLOW. So unless they can do something with the speed before it's release, they can't convince me to buy this phone.

wow...
its seem we got another friends from sony ericsson that hv window mobile as its os...

Hi - there's another discussion about this going on that's worth a read:

Size of the unit compared to other devices

Hi I'm thinking of buying an XDA Exec but I was wondering about it's size. Could anyone post some images of size comparison with other phones/PDA's?
I currently have an Nokia 6680, K750i and a HX4700..
Also just reading around there seems to be quite a lot of issues with the battery life, typically how long does it last for? Can it be improved via ROM updates?
Thanks
Although I don't think it's that much bigger than others (I had an alpine before) it does feel bigger because it has no rounded edges and is thicker due to the keyboard. It is much heavier than an alpine.
For pictures you can look up a review on google, I can't remember the site I saw it on.
Have you tried going down to a phone store and asking to have a look at one?
No one sells it near by
Before I got mine, I was reading about how big it is, how poor the battery life is, but for me the experience has been a good one.
Firstly, size wise, it's quite neat. I have an old pocket pc HP Jornada, and it's about the same size, but slightly thicker. It's a little on the heavy side, but nothing extreme and for the functionality, it has been very much worth it for me.
Battery life, I get around 5 hours continous usage average, when connected the phone network or WIFI (I always stay connected whether at home or away) and do various tasks, including browsing, music/video streaming, terminal services, VNC and such (although I'm not a game player), with the sound on. I charge it up when I get home, or when I get back to my laptop (charge over USB) and I've never had it run out on me, so I'm pretty happy with it. However, I don't have too much experience in the mobile market, so I'm not used to anything else.
Hope this helps

Here is a comparison shot with a Playstation Portable and a T-Mobile SDA which is pretty much standard size Smartphone. Hope this helps!
Here it is compared to a few other devices. Left to right: Audiovox SMT 5600 (HTC Typhoon), Palm Treo 650, Qtek 9000 (HTC Universal), Palm LifeDrive, Dell Axim X3i, Palm Tungsten E.
Thanks that was really useful!, I'm going to bit the bullet and order one now... at the end of the day every phone has it's weakness and after spending days reading review etc i think I'll give this a try..
You'll never look back. But if you do, it'll only be to stick two fingers up at the trans-dimensional quantum version of you that chose the Nokia N73.

Not from HTC but another possible successor for the Universal

Have to say, that looks the dogs!
lost some important things
instead of more memory I'm not sure has sense to move from universal to this device. It hasn't gps included or internal storadge, as athena has.

i think that you have to move from universal if you are looking for a good mobile phone with advanced features and pda functions, but if like a good pda with phone functions you can keep your universal...

why do you say that? In the universal I feel lost memory capabilities It affects both sides, pda and phone.
In respect to phone side I think I don't need more features but in the case of the pda I would like it more close a pc (memory, storadge, outside connectivity to screen).
In respect imate 7150, do you know how mutch it could cost?
Im sorry but i posted in the wrong thread, my post was supposed to reply to a comparison between universal and nokia e90
sorry again

Just checked the specs of pdadb.net
......drool....
I still have over a year to go with the contract of my uni. Let's hope this thing is around and affordable. Except if someone comes up with a device that makes me drool even more ;-)
Btw, I would love to play around with the athena, but I use my uni as primary phone and that would not work with the Athena. (For the Dutchies among us, check the review of pocketinfo for more info on the ameo).
Rather disappointing that it doesn't have GPS built-in.
Still, I'm starting to save up my 600-700 quid now.

Xperia or Samsung OMNIA?

Hi there people.
Which one do you people prefer?
I have a 16gb Omnia, but I love Xperia's 256mb RAM, Real Keyboard, Video @ 30fps VGA and the fact its built by HTC...
But happens that I love 5 megapixel camera
What whould you do in my place?
384mb RAM to be exact

I didnt know. Some of this is specific to video like in Diamond?
xperia, no doubt in mind (well, maybe price)
Honestly, I feel the Omnia is severely overrated... I don't think it even deserves a spot in conversation with the Touch Pro, Xperia, etc. Nice phone? Sure. Past that, I don't know... It seems like an iPhone with no capacitive screen and windows mobile. When you take your stylus around, does it go in your purse right next to your tampons and lip gloss?

I have to agree with that, very girlish
but I dont use the stylus, I keep it in my wallet
and I dont think its overrated, great storage, great screen, great gps, great sound
but obviously you cant compare with HTC in build quality and style
The Omnia is actually a very good WinMo phone - probably the best out there at the moment. There is a reason why it seems to be going like hotcakes (I can't get one on Orange but would have no problems getting a Diamond).
Sure the lack of a stylus slot was a serious oversight (well outright dumb to be honest) but I have played around with this and a diamond and I would go with an Omnia everytime. Aesthetics are very subjective, but the phone has a large screen, is eminently pocketable, has a far better battery than the diamond, and isn't as laggy as the diamond. It has good build quality and feels good in the hand and importantly has very good performance and also a very good camera (with a flash )
With regards to this or an Xperia X1 - it comes down to what is more important - screen resolution and keyboard versus slightly bigger screen, massive storage without the need for an extra microSD card (although it does have an expansion slot) and a very good camera.
To be honest I would be happy with either - I need to play with an Xperia (lord knows when that will happen ) before making my final decision.
I seriously considered the Omnia, but I just can't get excited about a WQVGA screen. I went from a VGA screen (Axim xv50) to a QVGA when I decided I needed a converged phone/PDA, so I'm really, really eager to get back at least to the VGA resolution, and I'd love to get to WVGA. If the Omnia had the same screen as the X1 or the Touch HD, it would be very close to my ideal hardware.
(I'm confused about today's news about the Epix, though -- is Epix the new name for the Mirage, which was assumed to be AT&T's name for the Omnia, or are Epix and Mirage different products, so that there's still hope for Omnia appearing soon in AT&T's lineup?)

X2
Nice pics...
But going by SE track record and add to that the lag in release of WM 6.5, I dont think this device will hit the shelfs before end 2009
Hardware doesn't seem to have changed much - just the design. Hmmmm..... I actually think the X1 looks better....
EDIT - From the other post concerning X2:
'According to insider:
-8.1mpx auto focus, VGA @ 30fps (MP4 HQ)
-3.5´ WVGA OLED (increased from 3.0 from X1)
-GPS, aGPS
-Accelerometer
-Faster processor
-512 RAM
-Custom Windows Mobile 6.5 (SE engineers customized Win6.5 which runs very. very speedy. in par with iphone and better in some cases)
-XPERIA Panels are modified with plenty of innovative features (PS3 remote play being one of them)
-Upgrading to Windows Mobile 7 is supported by Xperia panels'
But according to the above screenshot same processor???? Maybe I'm wrong but if the above is implemented then it should be good. design still looks crappy though IMHO....
Great info there. Thanks for sharing it.
By the looks of it... X1 is much better. But in terms of specs if what was stated is true then it'd be great, although I don't think many of us X1 owners now would feel the need to upgrade.
Looking at the keyboard's buttons... is that design supposed to give a better tactile feeling? hmm... I still prefer X1's current keyboard. Took some time to get used to it initially but heck... like it in the end.
Faster processor... well... with all those wonderful cooked roms we have here... guess the difference won't be that much compared to X1.
Oh well.. just my 0.02 opinion. Still love my X1...
With a little improvement from x1, i think almost all the x1 users will stick with their x1 because its not really what you call an upgrade this year.. But if they are saying that you can upgrade the OS to WM 7 we may think about it..
wats up with ur post saying 512mb ram and the phone saying 200(256mb) ram lol
In my opinion X2 really looks cheap. Its like poor sister of X1. I love design of X1.
Btw. check out the Panels button. There is no X anymore. And I would also miss softkeys.
gee...this is the 3rd thread about X2 on the first page already. How many more do we need? lol

Indeed...

Why you chose HTC Touch Diamond 2?

Hello everyone,
There are many phones in the market now. There are some cheap once also.
I have spend roughly 600 USD to buy this piece.
The reason i brought this phone, i was fed up of [email protected] the previous phone i had just fell apart with in first 6 months of usage...i had paid almost eqal amount for a phone.
I was looking for smothing sturdy, easy to use and versatile phone. After 2 months of usage i think i am happy with it.
I would be happy if you all also share your experience.
Regards,
Geo
I bought mine because my BA is 5 years old, and I didn't have much to spend on a phone, so I ended up getting the TD2 on att because it was cheaper than any unlocked phone.
I got mine because the design of the topaz is so nice to hold on to , perfect size in term of a cell phone, plus the window mobile allow so much mod and tweak plus apps to the system, just like a pc, thats why I choose a wm phone. iphones are for dump people that they think it looks cool but dont know anything about os tweak and command lines but just know how to touch those little square buttons. wm are for professionals.
I've made a thread like this already, please use search..
HTC gain has a loyal and delighted customer
I bought my Topaz after several months using my Touch Cruise.
Its only problem is its steel carcase. Accidentally, I dropped my topaz and now the phone has very nasty scratches on one of its side. Lesson learned: Buy a silicone case to protect it!
By the way... I became such a happy customer because of XDA-Developers. I tested almost all the Roms posted there!!!

Agree with all of that. Had to be HTC for build quality and support (here though, not from HTC), had to be WM for sheer power and registry hackability, and the Topaz was the perfect size vs screen size compromise for me. And it looks cool, to my 1970's tastes at least
