Hi,
I am aware that wifi does not work on the Snapview OS on HTC Shift.
Questions:
Is anyone aware of HTC adding this capability to next Shift ROM, I believe the Shift uses the same Qualcomm chip as HTC Touch, therefore is enabling the wifi an option on newer ROM (it seems to me on the non carrier versions, Wifi would have a benefit where you do not have GPRS or 3G)
Has anyone found a good way of improving battery life on Shift while using Wifi?
Thanx
Dave

Hello all,
From my research it has been suggested that I could enable the wifi functionality on my Sprint Touch 6900 by modifying the Registry settings.
The wifi is enabled on European models but is disabled on this American model.
I found a nice Registry editor here, and looked around in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE but couldn't find the wifi.
I'm asking if anyone knows their way around the Registry could they please post the proper settings?
The icing on the cake would be if I could get the wifi button to display in the Comm Manager just like the European models. I'm also wondering if I flashed the device with a new ROM would that do the trick?
Any help or Good Orderly Direction would be greatly appreciated and Thank You for your patience.

Ok I've made some progress on this front for the benefit of other folks who might be experiencing the same difficulty that I am.
Here's a link to MSDN for WiFi Drivers and Registry Settings for WM6.
HTC Tech support claims that wifi is enabled on the GSM phones but the CDMA phones were experiencing difficulty connecting which is why the wifi functionality was left out.
I asked if I could get ahold of the wifi driver for the Touch and they were less than forthcoming.
The driver is a single dll and if anyone could post a link to download one, that would be amazingly appreciated.
Ok even more progress, I'm quoting another poster on another forum:

I called HTC today and they told me that the Wi-Fi hardware is physically missing on all of the CDMA-based Touch models, so don't get your hopes up with the registry hack. What sucks is that even if the new Spectec microSD Wi-Fi card cooperates with the Touch, you still have to chose (or swap) between memory and Wi-Fi since you can't have both at the same time.
Apparently, the CDMA carriers just want to promote their own data plans and not sell fully-featured phones. This makes some sense if you believe the theory that the best feature-laden phones are all GSM because there's a push to eliminate CDMA, thus the CDMA carriers have to peddle their data plans at large discounts to keep customers. $15/month for EV-DO is pretty darn cheap compared to AT&T's ridiculous data plans...
Yes, yes, I know, many will say "why bother with Wi-Fi since EV-DO is faster?" BUT the internet isn't the only network worth connecting to out there. Plus, there are probably many places where EV-DO coverage is lacking so Wi-Fi is a good thing...
They also said that the GPS is just the E911 type - no ROM update can make it any more capable than it currently is. Oh well...

BALLS!
I have been looking for wifi registry in my xda stealth for over one year and found that the registry settings for Wifi differ between different pocket pcs ....After a previous upgrade. the wifi button disappeared from the wireless manager and going to HKLM/system/state/hardware/wifi showed many things....when I followed the above link when the wifi key disappeared, it showed DWRD/DEC value 0 AND by changing this to 1 the key returned but was not working....after another rom upgrade the value had changed to 5 but the wifi was not working...changing this value to different numbers showed different wifi states like unavailable/connecting/ connected etc although wifi utility will tell wifi off!!!!
people i need a hint
does nike support wifi and is there a way to enable it
thanks
i was googling and according to specs there is no wifi
but i read that the chipset supports wifi and wondered if devs enabled it
thanks in advance
I have gone through other topics referring to wifi on the Nike.
What people have come up with is that the Nike has a wifi antenna but HTC disabled it for telecommunication providers to bundle you onto data plans, As well as that if the Nike did have Wifi actually enabled, people would prefer it over a normal Touch, thus people buying the Nike instead of the Touch. Keeping in mind it is ridiculous that the Nike having a Wifi antenna inside it if HTC disables it meaning we cannot use it either way (Developers on this forum have attempted to get it working but no luck as of yet.)
Hope this helps ya!
Hi,
I guess that not only the antenna is missing but the power amplifier and the receive amplifier for WIFI + frontend filter.
Someone has a motherboard of the phone?
I work in cellphone hardware issues. If someone scans the board with minimum of 600 dpi (1200 dpi wold be even better) from both sides, then I can have a look at this and tell whether there is some WIFI hardware on it.
Br,
GatuRatz
I googled and found out theres a Wifi N for HTC Hd2 Euro version, and that you need bsb tweaks to enable it, but i was wondering does T mobile also has this piece of hardware? And to top it off lol would anyone know if wifi N can be enabled while using android 2.2 froyo on the t mobile htc hd2? thank youuu!
Yes the T-Mobile HD2 has the same WiFi chip as the Euro one, and yes you can simply use BsB tweaks to enable the support for WiFi N. As far as Android is concerned, I do not know if it supports N or not but I can confirm that it at least supports B/G.
it works just fine once you enable it in the registry. dunno if it supports 5Ghz though.
alrighty thanks for the clarification guys!
So I need to install a rom on the HD2 where I know wifi calling will work reliably. Its super important because this HD2 will be used where there is very spotty T-Mobile service. Wifi with a UMA Blackberry is the only thing that works currently.
I know there has been discussion as to how reliable the wifi calling feature can be in general, but I have a MyTouch4G and it works perfectly.
So is it a froyo only thing, or maybe only a froyo sense only thing?
I have friends that have it on their G2 and it works perfect for them as well.
So can anyone list a few roms where the wifi calling works reliably?
Thanks.

The common belief is that wifi calling can't work on the hd2 due to it not having some hardware required for it
Really? I thought that it was just an app? Just like the vibrant doesn't come with it but someone was able to figure it out.
Here..I found the post. Its not entirely hardware related, but has something to do with the radio..
The UMA client is embedded into the baseband processor of a dual-mode handset. The client executes the UMA protocol and is also responsible for monitoring Wi-Fi threshold levels, establishing the IPSec tunnel, and handling VoIP aspects of a UMA circuit voice session. Consequently a UMA client consists of four logical elements.
The UMA Protocol Interface
The core UMA protocol resides within the baseband stack. This is the set of core messages responsible for managing and maintaining an active UMA session. The core protocol module is integrated into the platform's radio resource (RR) layer and tunnels all messages between the handset's Non Access Stratum (NAS) layers and the mobile core network. GSM has standardized a large number of supplementary services. The UMA architecture is transparent to the NAS layers (MM and above) in the handset and the network. Because the supplementary services logically reside in the NAS, they are inherently supported in UMA access mode.
so it seems i was wrong about the hardware specific part to some degree, it seems that the radio software in the device has to have the uma feature (client) written in and then flashed to the device to add that functionality to the hd2, but thats the big issue... who knows enough to dismantle a radio nbh and modify and insert it with the code needed..? i guess in that matter it might as well be entirely hardware based..
so it may be possible but not likely at the moment...

Yes, you have that correct. I use the Nettalk app for WiFi calling on the Cmylxgo NAND Stock Desire HD(2) ROM without a problem.
any news on the ROM?
There's a kernel in the nand section being tested for wifi calling, I think there's a rom in the thread too but I don't know if its working
Edit:
Here's the link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038784
It doesn't appear to be working yet, but tyweens working on it and he's got an awesome kernel and rom
I'm looking to use my HD2 as basically a pocket wifi modem.
So, I'm looking for the best rom setup to maximize its battery and stability for wifi or bt tethering.
Would it be best to go with an extremely light windows mobile build or look at other OS's ?
Windows mobile.
Better battery life & some good apps for tethering are available.
BT tethering is a little limited on HD2 due to use of widcom stack ...
I use my old touch pro as a wifi router (on WM6.5 rom) for 3G internet & it gets used daily for 4hr or more & works great, stable connection & screen can be turned off or device put to standby with reg fix ...
Expect android will do the job but battery life won't be so good plus issue of no charge ability with device off or out of power is not great for this power draining use ...
Thanks for the advice... been so long since I'd done anything with the HD2 I forgot about the charging issue when the device is off... that would present somewhat of an issue for me hah.
I figured I already have an extended battery etc for the HD2, might as well put it to work
Any recommendations for the most cut down lowest dog of a rom for this task, I envision turning off sense etc would be best but that is possible on most windows roms, are NRGz28's still the way to go or should I look else where for efficiency?
NRG is probably a good way to go.
he has/had some light versions without sense that might be just right for you.
Would not hurt to scan through the WM6.5 rom development & see what else may meet your needs.
I Have TAEL on my Touch Pro as NRG is a bit heavy for it, makes a great wifi modem.
have it in a cradle at home & friends use it for wifi when come round or I use it for mobile wifi modem when travelling if I need the HD2 on phone duty.
Should be good ...
