My XDA stopped flashing in the middle of upgrading the Radio
version 4.16. Now my unit is senseless. I tried to reflash but
it didn't work out.
anybody here knows how to solve this problem? Is it possible to
backup the GSM ROM using the Wallaby bootloader? Any idea if
this can be solved with hyperterminal (parrot) method?

The same happened with my XDA... The Radio Stack Upgrade version
4.16 stopped flashing at 10% and afterwards the GSM part of the
XDA didn't work anymore and the XDA itself started to behave
weird (long boot up time, no ActiveSync connection etc.)
OK, maybe I shouldn't have flashed the Asian RSU version over my
German XDA but it did work with the Irish RSU version.
Now, I will need to buy an MMC/SD card reader and try to restore
the Flash ROM with the ROM image tool from this site...
At least I have some free time around Christmas...

We've never claimed anything about the phone updates yet.
The XDA-developers ROM Image Tool using SD cards, as published
on this site, will only help you flash the Bootloader and the
Windows CE image, both located in the 32 MB of flash attached to
the main (Strong ARM) processor.
The phone image is uploaded through the PDA to another 4MB of
flash attached to the "digital baseband chip", which is a
completely different (ARM7) processor and DSP combination.
We're working on the GSM ROM, but no guarantees as to when work
is done. If you send us mail at [email protected],
we'll try to see if we can help you, and we'll post the outcome
here.

(I'm the guy who flased the Asian RSU over his German XDA)
Thank you for the clarification about the separate flash memory
areas.
I'm actually suspecting that the failed Radio Stack Upgrade did
some harm to the regular flash memory that stores the OS.
Here is what happened so far in more detail:
- RSU stopped flashing at 10% as described previously
- Soft reset (the big hole)
- XDA needs quiet long to come up because it unsuccessfully
tries to start up GSM but it does come up with the Today screen
at last (and GSM turned off)
- XDA behaves weird (no ActiveSync connection, RSU upgrade
cannot be removed) but is still operable, i.e. reacts to user
input
- Hard reset (the small hole) with 60 secs wait time between
punching into the small hole
- Now the XDA behaves even weirder: Long boot up time, white
screen with a blue border at the top, hardly any reaction to
user input, after pressing the volume button a couple of times
the Today screen appears but somewhat mutilated
So my conclusion is that there must be something wrong with the
flash ROM holding the OS because after the hard reset which
erases all RAM the XDA still doesn't work right. I'm guessing
that if the GSM part cannot correctly be turned on (because of
an incomplete radio stack), it should not severeley impact the
rest of the OS.
Just to inform you: I'm also a developer (telecommunication and
networking) with electrical engineering and computer
architecture background so I don't mind reading all the
technical terms

Well, I flashed my 3.12 & 4.06 Asian ROM with the Irish 3.14
plus the Radio version 4.14 without any problems. They are
working perfectly until I got an itch to flash the Radio version
4.16. It stopped exactly at 10% and afterwards it behaves as
described above. What happened is that the Top Bar is
completely unusable. I tried a hard reset and the screen is
completely blank. To get to the Today menu, I need to press the
volume buttons. Then by pressing the Action & Calendar keys I
did the screen alignment stuff. I used the same buttons
pressing combination to activate the StartMenu (it's a pain to
get it though). Once I access the StartMenu, I mapped the file
explorer shortcut to the StartUp so it will be activated
everytime I soft resetted my XDA. Then I copied the CAB files
of both 4.14 & 4.16 version and tried to reflash my XDA. But
none of them worked out
I would be pleased to try any suggestions to bring my XDA back
from the dead

sounds not to god at all ....
What to the experts think about it ? For me it seems, that the
top bar does not show up, because the XDA does not a status from
the phone. What happens if you try to deactivate the phone by
pressing the off hook button (red phone) for several seconds? I
had a similar problem after (trying) to flash the 4.06, but
after a hard reset and switching off the phone I was able to
flash the phone directly from the device. But, as it is unclear
at which point your flash crashed, it might not help. If nothing
helps, just go to a o2 shop and look as innocent as you can

Subject: Flash process not fail safe
From: Idefix
Date: 21 Dec, 2002 16:53:02
As many of you already found there are strong indications that
the flash process is not fail safe. There is very likely *no*
fixed ROM in the whole XDA. This means when the flash process
goes wrong you're stuck cause the CPU can't boot anymore and the
flash process can not be restarted.
FYI this is different from for example a Nokia phone where it
allways first boots from ROM that is not reflashed. This way it
can almost always be repaired with normal flash equipment even
if the flash ROM is completely ****ed.
One thing on the RSU update: it seems that this always is a
partial flash. For example GSM calibration data is always
retained, but also some of the code is not reflashed. This means
that it most likely is an incremental flash and that could mean
it is not useable over just any other existing flash version.
I suspect that the only way to repair a broken flash on an XDA
is to reflash through JTAG or other means of 'in circuit'
flashing.

Subject: Fried XDA and XDArit attempts
From: Festan
Date: 21 Dec, 2002 18:39:59
Hi,
I played around with XDArit in order to try to repair my XDA. It
took a while and a few flashing attempts until I found out that
the binary file in the official O2 update distribution does
contain the bootloader. It also contains a kind of a header
(ASCII characters) that indicate the version and language.
XDArit does not strip off the header but takes the file as it is
to generate the SD card data. So at first I ended up flashing
something totally wrong into my XDA and it made it even worse
(only Wallaby came up, nothing else).
After stripping off the header and the bootloader data (256K)
and using this altered file for XDArit, I was able to get back
to the point where I was before (white screen, no top bar).
I will try Confused's tips now and hope that I can somehow get
the correct Radio Stack into the device.

On the same page, there is now also a diagnostics card image
that allows patching 5.17 bootloaders to be able to dump and

Festan: XDArit reads the upgrade .nbf files directly, so you did
not need to go through so much trouble. Just select .nbf as the
input file type.

You have to take out the SIM and try again. There will be a
message "Take out AC before start" and later it will pass 10%
and it run OK.

Yes, I didn't realize that the type of input file for the flash
can be chosen.
However, my XDA still doesn't work properly. The PDA part does
work (after applying Confused's tips) although the response time
to user input is sometimes quite high. The GSM part is still
broken. Maybe the OS tries to access some GSM functionality but
cannot and thus causes the pauses.

images. XDA-developers does not, and will not, distribute

SuperKT: if you really need to flash both bootloader and WinCE,
do as follows:
- Get NT, Win2000 or XP
- Get a PC-card or USB to SD-card adapter
- Get the Irish update and let it install without putting XDA in
cradle.
- Start XDArit (
http://xda-developers.com/
XDArit )
- Write to SD from file, check bootloader and WinCE, and use the
.nbf file from the "English" directory of the upgrade package.
- Insert card in XDA and put in bootloader mode
- Flash from SD
Procedure changes somewhat if you have a 5.17 bootloader. See
the XDArit page mentioned above.

XDA Developers,
I tried to do as suggested but it has an error after ROM Flashed
to XDA "Check sum is not correct". I rebooted my XDA but it's
not been work.
I did :-
- Get Win2000
- Get USB to MMC-Card
- Get NK.nbf in the "English" directory of the Asian upgrade
package
- Write Wallet Patch to MMC-Card because my loader version is
5.17
- Boot from MMC-Card with patch
- Take out MMC-Card
- Write NK.nbf to MMC-Card
- Put MMC-Card into XDA
- Select Restore from SD
- It was flashing until finished at 200000 and have the error
"Check Sum is not correct" , Cold boot, Reset
- I dis rest but it's still the same problem
- If boot by loader it has still been "GSM Error".

We're aware of multiple people having problems wrecking their
phones during upgrades, usually using the normal RSU upgrade
packs meant for their phone. There's currently not much we can
do, but we are peeking more and more into what is happening
during the phone upgrade process. More info will certainly
follow in the next few weeks.
As for the WinCE part not flashing correctly: flashing through
the bootloader has been very reliable for us, and we're not
aware of others having similar problems. SuperKT: please send us
an even more detailed description of what you did exactly via

dropping the (rsu_eng.exe) GSM ROM CAB file onto a SD card and
then into my XDA and 'tapping'it starts the Flash Update 1.08

anyone have any ideas what may be stopping the rsu program from
working?

On Monday 18.05, I have upgraded to qtek v. 1.66. Since then, these last 2 days, around 8 pm, the BT light start flashing and the qtek does not work any more. Making a soft reset just stop the green light. The only solution I found is a hard reset. Installed programs: SPB 2.0, wimram, ezwap, vito button mapper. Perhaps is one of these program not compatible. I will now wait until tonight 8 pm, withour reinstalling any programs and see if i need to downgrade to older version.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Dtipex
i have that issues once in awhile
is use spd but not version 2
my qtek 2020 came with 1.66
this mean i use backup and restore often
suppose i could try to leave it default
and see if it's a program doing the stuff
are u using a SD512 card? if yes try to remove it and see if the forced hard.reset is still needed.
i use a 128MB and a few times removing it helped but in general it dont help
nor does removing the batt or sim
or trying to charge it which it cant when it's frozen
suppose it could be a hardware issue but odd that a hardreset always solve it then
I am getting same problem, but with me , it can happen without warning, i cannot switch on, no response to any soft reset attempt, only solution is to do a forced hard reset. Happened now 5 times in 1 month, (new i-mate v.1.66) programs installed, sprite backup v3. PI v5, spb plus v2, hudsonmobile phone dashboard, spb gprs monitor, resco file explorer, fitaly, phatpad, phat notes and scary bear check notifiaction (usually no more than 11 listed). It is a nuisance, but i no have confidence in hard reset and restore with sprite backup working well, i now keep regular backups. I am very interested to know if there any any potential conflics etc. I have seen in some of the threads oin this forum that soft reset 5 times at the start of hard reset, when the red tect appears bottom right, can work, I will try next time.
For me it's under multie last version.
Sometimes it's freeze 10s.
Before I do hard reset but now I wait and its works.
wonder if it could have anything to do with the strange max process limit bug
or if people who dont install any software themselfs also get it after X time
Exactly the same problem:
Sometime the blue light goes on, don't know if that is the same problem.
But hangs with a black screen, no backlight, no button response and no light after a bat change or softreset.....

I thought the problem was the the option in the today screen; "Display Today screen if device is not used for xxx hours. I set the option off, but i not really tested it.
After much research reading different posts and threads, it seems many of us using ROM version 1.66.00we are getting the same problem. It seems it is something to do with the radio. Owners of earlier versions are not posting these concerns. apparently v1.66 can not be downgraded to the more stable 1.52. According to some posts, a new version 1.72 will be released shortly, which hopefully will solve problem. Check the posts on this site regarding the 1.72 beta release. I am getting fed up with these issues, imate costs a small fortune and its reliablity is a dissappointment to what is otherwise a great device.
what radio does 1.5 and 1.7 use because my 1.66 have 1.10.00
it seems that i-mate devices which came originally with ROM 1.52 had the radio 1.06 and for those who have subsequently upgrade to 1.52 from an earlier ROM 1.03 they get the 1.10 radio stack.
(mods i would appreciate if you could make this a sticky for people... ive worked long and hard trying to get this thing working again)
Ok so heres what happened to my XDA which proberly happened to yours.
I went onto the 02 site and got the latest radio stack upgrade for my xda, but i didnt have the sim in my device so once it finshed and restarted the xda it crashed because there was no sim in it. So i hard reset it.
Causing it to hang on the boot screen showing the G & U letters on the side for about 4 minutes before booting to a blank screen with the keyboard icon in the corner.
*** Please remember at the moment my status LED isnt working showing there is no battery (but still booting etc - P.S i have installed a new battery - no diffrence) ***
Heres how to get it working...... remember that everything takes longer because the XDA lags like mad.
Ive created this guide myself ive took nothing from anyone else info ive done this from scratch, it will need to be done everytime the machine runs out of power (hard resets).

* when i put " + " it means AT THE SAME TIME e.g button1 + button2 = keep pressing them at the same time.
** I refer to the directional keypad centre button as the "OK" button.
Make sure you have the correct RSU Version from here :>
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wallaby_HT_GSMError
Download it and put the files onto an SD card.
1. Boot up the device
2. keep pressing the OK button + volume button until it shows the today screen, please note there will be no titles on the screens, HENCE NO START BUTTON.
3. Then press the contacts button + THEN OK a few times, then press the OK button this should bring up the start menu
4. CLICK programs, file explorer, select the SD Card. Then Copy RSUPGRAD.exe to : my device > windows>start up.
5. Copy the remaining 3 files to the : my device > windows
6. Soft Reset Device
7. Click on start (on the upgrade util) it will then restart the device because theres no LED for the battery (hence the 1% then fail).
8. Once started it should then start up as it did when it came out the box giving you the windows setup screen.
9. Go into file explorer and delete tha flas util file from the startup.
Thats it!
- Remember if you hard re-set the device again it will need to be re-done, i dont know how to solve this problem LONG TERM, im giving my XDA to 02 to fix it...... been as its there screw up.

Does this actually flash the gsm radio? If it does then why does it need reflashing following a hard reset?
No it doesnt re-flash it.............
All i know is that it fixes it and many people have had the same problem but had no replys so id thought id help them out
Where are he diffreneces to the instrucions on wiki????

huh? so your saying someone has already written the instructions?
Do you have a link? it will be intresting to find out how i can get my LED working again so the system will be able to work once more.
EDIT: IF THE BATTERY LED/STATUS IS UNKOWN (as in my case)
"Maybe the upgrade will stop again at 1%, this may occur when you have an empty battery. "
Does not apply to you............... hence why my guide overcomes the one on wiki.
If you have had the situation happen to you, then you would undertsand.
would it be possible to use the xda developers 1.2 special edition ROM instead of the 1.1 version for this procedure?thats the only rom i seem to have found.
Boogie, I think you need only the radio stack not the rom if I read the post correctly. The special edition rom contains NO RADIO STACK.
That´s not 100% correct. I´ve noticed, that some ROMs wouldn´t boot up so that you can follow the procedure.....
Stefan
hey guys this is my 1st post to this forum, but for the last year or so I've found it very helpful.
I was experiencing this same issue it would just boot up and hang on the welcome screen for what seemed like an eternity. I gave up and just left it booting up and finally the today screen came up. This is what I tried and it worked. All of this was after a hard reset when I tried to upgrade the radio stack and it fell into this infinite loop of 1% and fail and reboot. I had read a couple of the procedures for doing a radio stack upgrade but here is some of what I did.
In one of the procedures it says to copy the files to ur ppc windows directory and to copy the exe file to ur windows startup directory. I figured I would bypass that in some way. After I finally got to the today screen and used my pc to copy the files to the sd card, I copied all the files to the windows directory on the device and ran the exe file from the windows directory. It worked like a charm and my ppc was back to life. It no longer took for ever to get passed the welcome screen. I hope this helps some of you that have this issue
I have a TyTN which I ordered from the States and live in Australia. When I put in my current phones SIM GSM/GPRS card the TyTN starts up by displaying the HTC logo and the following numbers at the bottom of the screen:
M 05
S 04 No GSM
B 05 D 1.18
For a brief second the No GSM pops onto the screen and then the machine boots up. It displays the little aerial at the top of the screen with the exclamation mark. It seems to do that weather there is a sim card in it or not.
I went to Telstra and tried a 3G card but it did the same thing. I also tried an Optus card as well and it also did nothing. After looking through this site I noticed that I do not list a radio or protocol version as everyone else’s does, or is it only listed after the network has been detected?
If I run the phone program and go to menu > options it does nothing but display ‘Unknown SIM status. Only emergency calls can be made without a PIN.’ This message is displayed regardless of weather or not there is a SIM in the machine or weather it requires a PIN. I cannot find any way to ask the machine to detect a network or choose from a number of networks or review status or settings.
Any information or advice would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Steve
From reading what you have put, it sounds like your device has no Radio Rom, or if it does its corrupt.
If you are in a posistion to return the device to where you got it from I would do that first.
If you cant (aka ebay etc) then I would try reflashing the phone with the appropriate rom and it should overwrite all the rom, radio rom and extended rom leaving you with a working phone.
Put the device in bootloader mode (press POWER and SIDE OK together and at the same reset with stylus), connect to it using mtty and once you see the "USB>" prompt type "checkimage".
You should see the Radio Image CRC checksum there and will be able to diagnose if there's any problem with it. For more info read this wiki page:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_BootLoader
Thanks guys.
Unfortunately it's not really an option to return the unit. I would rather sort it out myself if possible.
Pof,
I took your advice and put the device in boot loader. The screen came up with a series if coloured bands of red, green, blue and white. In the red band were the following details:
HERM200
IPL-1.00
HERM200
SPL-1.04
I ran the MTTY app. and it came up with the results that you can see in the attachment.
I suppose my next question is “where to from here?” Is it possible to reinstall the ROM of the same version I currently have or is there some other way to turn on the radios ROM?

Looking at your signature I guess you're using HTC 1.18.255.3 07/22/06 English rom, right? This rom is available on the FTP, check it here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades
Try to upgrade it, and let us know if you have any problems after the upgrade.
I've had the same problem with one of the earlier units. No GSM. I've reflashed it with shipped ROM and it worked for a day. Then, one of the phone calls got interrupted and after soft reset - NO GSM again. At this point it would not reflash at all - was stuck at 4%. Good luck to you, but I strongly advise to replace this unit ASAP.
Cheers
Thanks Pof and ID64,
I downloaded the ROM and tried to reinstall but had the same problem that ID64 explains. My problem is it stops at 1%. The instructions say this is not a problem just soft reset or pull the battery out. Unfortunately you end up in a vicious circle and it keeps freezing at 1%. I even downloaded a different ROM to see if that would help. Unfortunately it did not.
As mentioned I bought the unit from an online vendor in the States. It’s taken so long to determine that there is a genuine fault rather than a config problem that I do not know if I can return it. I may have to test HTCs ‘worldwide warranty’. Does anyone have any experience with claiming warranty? I wonder if it’s easier to contact Taiwan rather than trying to send it back to the States? If anyone knows the best course of action please let me know.

Try going into bootloader and typing "set 14 0" to reset the unit to default values before you return it.
If you want to know exactly why the upgrade fails you can sniff the USB port while trying to upgrade using HHD USB Monitor, in the "complete" view you'll see the error message coming from the device. Export it to .txt and attach it here if you want some feedback about the error.
Good luck!
Thanks all,
ID64 I took your advice after trying to load the ROM. It would get to 1% and freeze. I tried the Dopod ROM and it would get to 14% then freeze.
I contacted the supplier (in the States) and he agreed to replace the unit once it was confirmed faulty. I had to send it to Denmark. I have just been informed that the unit is indeed faulty and they will send me a new unit. It is due for dispatch shortly. I will let you know once I have received it and it actually works.
Thanks again all. You were able to provide enough info for me to determine that the unit was genuinely faulty rather than a simple setting or software issue.
Cheers.
Similar error
I have a similar error to the one above with my T-Mobile Vario II. It is intermitant and can be resolved for a time by a soft reset.
The output from running the same test above gives;
IPL CRC checksum = 0x1C4C8E67
SPL CRC checksum = 0x921BC30
CE CRC checksum = 0x3766505C
ExtROM CRC checksum = 0xBC294D4A
Radio Image CRC checksum = 0xF0BF1EF5
Does this indicate that it isnt hardware?
Can anyone offer any suggestions to what may be causing this?
The problem seemed to appear when I changed away from the standard shipped radio ROM.
Thanks
Aidan
Hi, im new to scene and already have a Imate jasjam (the TYTN) and have flashed it already to a new rom and works great.
However the HTC TouchFlo that I have seems to modified in some way as to not allow the old style Hard Reset / Soft reset, and has way diff specs for ram etc. It only has an inbuilt menu item to Master Clear the phone, but not rebuild menus etc.
Also the Elf / Elfin utility (dsixda's) to read the pda version etc will not work, and the utility to download the current spl (Dump SPL) fails as well.
and system/ >> Device Information/Hardware menu is missing on my phone
Is this common knowledge? As ive browsed here for a few days looking for the answer. All i can assume is they have implemented some lock to stop reverse engineering.
have i missed a step somewhere?
Here is a Gallery of images, to view.

To add i copied dim application from my other phone (HTC TYTN), and most of the fields are empty. still says rom ver / date blank, radio and protocol blank
hardware. cpu blank, speed blank, ram size 6881394MB flash 7602288 MB, storage 72.78 MB , model and imie blank.
It doesnt matter too much with whats going on, its seems to have been manufactured less that 2 months ago and i have no problems with it.
Would have been good to slightly customise it, but nevermind.
Yup, most of the stuff have been changed.
TYTN is slightly older and therefore has more hardware buttons.
If you wish to hard reset, here you go:

Just to let you know that doesnt work either.
Found out how to hard reset.
Press Power, Camera, Call (green) and Disconnect (Red) , and reset with stylus.
hold buttons for 5 seconds, screen will go BLUE.
Release, all 4 buttons and when loaded system is default again.
excuse me, I have the same HTC, from China. Now it has only English. Could you help me, haw I can make it Russian?
