New Alltel HOME to Be Released! - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hey guys, just figured I would share with you this information and email I recieved from the Data Tech Department at Alltel this morning. Before I paste the email here, I'll try to explain why this was sent to me.
Around a month ago , I contacted Alltel Data Tech Department and pretty much made a complaint about the Weather option in the HTC Home Plugin on my Vogue. I told the guy I spoke to , who was extremely helpful for once, about how many people used this plugin, and how many people did not live in the wierd selection of cities that the plug offered.
The Tech left me his extension number, and told me he would try his best to get in touch with someone that could actually do something about getting the list updated. He explained that Alltel would have to specificaly request that HTC supply and upgrade, and that he wasn't sure who himself or I could contact to see if this was by any chance possible now , or in the future.
I went thru every post on XDA, PPCgeeks, HTCwiki, and every other forum, and web page, and coppied every single post , and thread, and single sentence I could find from people asking for Developers on this site to make way for this to be possible, and put it in an email. I also put every post I could find from people who had tried to do some type of fix to get it working and couldn't in the email as well , and sent it to the Tech that I had spoke to.
After that , I repeatedly sent emails to every corprate department, and tech department I could find for Alltel , for the past month, asking for them to make a simple way for everyone to use the weather feature on there phone. Honestly, I never expected to hear anything from anyone , but this morning I recieved an email from the Tech I had spoken too, with part of an email he had recieved attached to it.
Now I know some of you probably think that this was a waste of time, but I myself would love to be able to use the weather option on my phone, and the other small things they said they were planning. I know alot of other people use the Htc Home Plugin, on just about every phone, so I figured it was worth a shot. But anyway , heres what was sent to me. I did take out my info but the techs email is still included.
Dear Mr. *******,
This is Jim Blankenship, Supervisor for Alltel Data Technical Support Department. Sorry it has taken so long to do a follow up on your call to Alltel, but I actually just received a reply yesterday.
I forwarded the emails you sent to me on April 9 2008, and April 13 2008, to the Software Research Department, and also the Customer Relations Department, both part of Alltel’s corporate office. After six days of no reply, I sent the emails again.
I am personally sorry that it has taken this long to provide you with a response, but I finally received a reply yesterday. I have been told to inform you that an upgrade will be offered for the Alltel Touch within the next 14-21 days. Apparently, an upgrade was already under development. It wasn’t specified if it would be offered as a ROM upgrade or as a standard software upgrade, but this is what I was told would be new.
*Home Plug-in will include several new customization features, including the ability to choose any location available on AccuWeather.com for the weather application
*New options available to customize TouchFlo settings
*New options available to customize TouchFlo Cube
*New Screen Lock application will be included
*Support for several new media formats introduced by a new stand alone Video/Music Player
Again, I would like to offer my apologies on the amount of time it has taken to follow up with your Mr. *******. I sincerely hope this helps you. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact myself, or any other member of Alltel.
Sincerely,
Jim Blankenship
Technical Supervisor/ Data Support

Interesting! I hope that they didn't just get it mixed up with the Diamond's touchflo 3d, or just tell you that to stop you from mass emailing every contact you could find

SMS delivery notice shows only the number not the name?

I am pasting the question from another forum which interests me as well…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hi all,
when sending sms and you set the setting for ask for delivery notice on you get back the delivery notice but it will only show you the number not the Name.
This is very annoying when you are sending sms to many contacts.
Is there a work around that?. I contacted the poor online support of Imate and one "not-so-tactful" support lady said "this is what it suppose to do" and they cut me off even before asking my next question to them.
what a shame i-mate has such a poor online support."
Unfortunately I don't think there is. The delivery report comes back from the networks servers with the persons mobile number only. The contact name for that number is stored locally on your phone handset only. What you need is a program that can scan received delivery reports, pull out the number and match it to your contacts database. Far too long winded.
Such a function would probably only benefit someone sending one sms to multiple contacts, then waiting to see who actually received it, so probably not considered by any software developers.
never the less, it is still a shortcoming of the Windows Mobile software, as all nokia phones old and new (even the ancient 8210), and sony ericsson phones can do this!
If anybody is still trying to find the solution for this... here it is...

Voice Mail App?

Hi All,
I don't know if this as been posted before, i couldn't find it if it was.
I'm looking for an app which will take voice mail and record it right on the phone when i miss a call. I've seen it for S60 phones but never for WinMo. I've been looking for almost a year off and on but have never found anything near what i want. If anyone has seen it send me the name please, it would be a great time saver.
Chris
Grandcentral?
I don't know if you'd be interested in all that it entails but check out http://www.grandcentral.com as a possible solution. It's not exactly what you're after but may work out for you....
Hey, thanks for the link. I think i may have found what i'm looking for! I have not tested or installed this yet, i'm at work. I'll be installing it over dinner and putting it to the test. Heres the link:
http://www.isecretary.net/download.php
Chris
I've been using Callwave: http://www.callwave.com/landing/mobileVisualVoicemail.aspx?r=NONE
Again, it's not exactly what you said, but you can set it to send you and email with attachment which you can save to your phone.
I was using SimulScribe/SimulSays, but their customer service is atrocious. So bad that at one point the CEO emailed me to apologize for how I was treated after reading the email exchanges only to ignore my response email asking if my lost voicemails could be recovered. I guess the answer was no.
The other nice thing about Callwave is that it will transcribe your voicemail (good for reading messages while you're in meetings). I don't know if that's free longterm however.
i'll be interested to hear how the isecretary worked out...
HI,
I haven't had a chance to really test it out yet, I've been super busy. I did test it when i first downloaded it and i think it may have deleted all of my contact #'s. Not sure it was the program or something i did as messing with my phone seems to be my new habit. At present i can record a message from an incoming call but i'm having trouble getting the greeting to play. Adjusting the settings may be all thats needed but i don't have the time to do it yet. If i get it under control i'll post what i did to get it to work.

LED lamp with mail

hello all
can someone help me please.
I also did light LED for the mail does not work for me.
I have adapted to register but no.
sms etc. work fine except email.
one solution?
Thanks.
Yep; from reading this and various other forums, it seems this doesn't work on ANYONE'S HD2. HTC Support claims it works just fine for them though, and that they've had no complaints (except mine). Obviously this is a software issue, since the LED fires for other notifications, so it'd be an easy software fix.
Suggestion: drop an email to HTC describing this (and other) problem. http://www.htc.com/europe/CS_Mail.aspx
I have almost all the software from xda tried.
Resultaad same ..
Could the problem lie with the Radio Rom? !
Someone experience??

...and mine too ;-)
Brief mini-rant (and sneaky opportunity to bump this up):
I'm as pissed as anyone about the SMS problem; it's a basic function of a phone that oughta work out of the box as expected even on the cheapest phone available. That it doesn't work on this pricey gizmo, and HTC have yet to fix it is shocking.
From reading these threads though, I see that folks have thousands of SMS's on their phones. Wow. On most plans, SMS's cost money to send. Why would anyone choose an SMS when an email would serve the same purpose? I read somewhere on the net that per byte it's cheaper to send / receive data from the Hubble telescope than to send an SMS.
My point: I'm surprised there's not more outrage about the non-working 'new email' notification LED.
response from HTC re LED Notification not working
I dropped an email to HTC describing the Email LED problem and their initial response was, have i ticked the box in settings .
Then they said
"the only option we can take is to escalate this case for you and get the R&D department to take a look and get a fix for this.
if i can take some details from the device i can forward this case on to be looked at:
Serial number,
IMEI number.
ROM version, 1.48.405.2 (71294) WWE
Radio version 2.05.51.05_2"

i gave them my details and their response was :-
"Thank you for the details ill make sure they look in to this and see what we can do to correct this for you.
thanks again, ill contact you as soon as we get some information back from them"

Not holding my breath
Can you let us know if they come with a solution ..??
I've been swapping emails with the developer of PhoneAlarm; he's sent me a beta version that actually makes the email LED work! He says the beta should be up on his site in the next day or so. YAAAAAAY!
http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html Since this guy's the only person who's taken the trouble to look into this, I strongly encourage all to *purchase* this nice piece of software.

Will do, hopefully they dont take to long to work it out.
Have more people with this problem or are we alone??
Nope; this is faulty on ALL HD2s as far as I know, and also not fixed on the latest ROM 1.66.
But, the latest version of PhoneAlarm fixes this problem! I strongly encourage folks to try / purchase this great piece of software! http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html
That means HTC sense to disable switching and Phone Alarm?
I am having same problem and headache to think how is the solution. Then i eat panadol.
I just fired off an email to HTC about this. It's a bit frustrating that there is an option for it but it doesn't work. How embarrassing for them to have such a blatant bug. It can't hurt to let them know that lots of folks are suffering from this.
Here is the response I got from HTC today
New Response From [ Richard (UK - Ireland Support (Tech)) ]

I can't believe they are just being so blind about this problem. It is on every handset. Why don't they just test it on their own?
Hardware fault. WTF?
Yep: the HTC guy I swapped emails with swore up & down that his email LED worked just fine.
finally
People good news, Uncle Bear is right.
Thanks to him I now also working led to mail, I could not believe my eyes when I saw a green light.
So phone alarm beta version is a nice solution.
Least until HTC comes with a solution. (As can be seen a long time)
After the last email they sent me I sent them this back

This is not a hardware issue. If it is, then it is a problem with every HD2 handset out there. Lots of other HD2 owners have this exact problem also. I am a member of the XDA forum and it does not work for everyone. As I stated before, the LED works for other notifications, like SMS or alarm, but not the email. This is a problem with Sense or Windows I think. You should look into it more. I have hard reset the device many times and this specific feature has never worked.

I can only assume they meant to say "isn't fixing" and not "is fixing". Not only are they fobbing me off, they can't even be arsed to type (or copy and paste) an email correctly.
I just got pretty much the same response from Joe UK Tech support. He said a Hard reset would fix it but if it doesnt he will make sure that any info he gets from the R&D department, he will get back to my straight away. (Not going to hold my breath)
In the meantime, i have started using PhoneAlarm and now the LED does flash for new emails but there are so many notification setting/changes needed within PhoneAlarm its a hassle.
Another response from HTC
I sent them
I an only assume you meant to say "isn't fixing" and not "is fixing" in your previous response? Can you please confirm that your HD2 has the email notification working. That is, when a new email arrives, the LED will flash for the time that is set in the settings? This is very strange, there are hundreds of people just like me on the XDA forums that are having this exact same problem. Are you saying that all their handsets are defective too and need to be replaced? This functionality has not worked on ROM's 1. 43, 1.48 or 1.66. It does work for the other notifications like SMS or missed call, which strongly points to a software bug. Almost 100% sure it's not a hardware fault. I really don't want to send my phone as I can't be without it for weeks.

They replied with
Dear customer, You have the option to send this device to be repair or wait untill the rom update to fix this software issue. At the moment HTC does not have any information when this hotfix will be available to the customer. Please contact us for further questions. Best regards, HTC customer support team HTC Corp. So I replied with
Here you contradict yourself. You say that I can send my phone in for "Repair" but also that there is no software fix for this. Doesn't that mean that there is also no way that you can fix the problem. What would you do to "Fix" this? Again I will ask you. Does your HD2 have a working LED for email notification? Or is it a fault with the software? I know the LED works for SMS, missed calls etc but does it work for emails?

Why won't they just give a straight answer and accept there is a problem at least. What the hell would they do with it if I sent it in anyways?

MS must give us quickly, because Android is really perfect on HD2 now
If Microsoft wanted they could've stopped giving out codes. But I'm pretty sure Microsoft is more than happy to have Windows Phone 7 gain a considerable amount of Userbase!
For them, at this stage its all about increasing the Userbase than trying to stop people form using WP7.

Dear Josh
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service Department. My name is <agent name> and I would like to address your enquiry regarding Windows Phone 7.
Based on your email description, you would like to get the activation code for Windows Phone 7. Please let me know if this is not correct.
Josh, regarding your enquiry, I would appreciate if you can provide a scan of the proof of purchase/picture of the phone itself. Once it has been verified, then we will provide you with the activation code.

problems with getting activation ID

I have called them twice today, did chat three times and even e-mailed them. 4 times i have been told they are out of the activation codes, and the last time i got asked for the imei......this is becoming a huge headache, are the apps and the xbox live functionality really that worth it? or should i admit defeat and go back to droid? Any one else haveing similar issues? or is anyone willing to pass along there code because they just dropped in to check it out than flashed back to something else?
Make up another email and name. They can check your chat history so making up more stories wont help. With a new name and email start a chat. Make up some BS like you use a throat mic and they customer service on the phone didn't understand you. It doesn't matter what name or number you give them Im more than sure their codes are pretty universal on devices of the same type. If no success make up another email and name and try again. I got it on my 3rd try via chat.
so i went back in armed and ready, new name, new email, and hopes for a code
Caleb: Welcome to Microsoft Customer Service Chat, Josh.
Caleb: I understand that you need an activation code for Windows Phone 7. Is this correct?
Josh: yes sir
Caleb: Thank you for the confirmation.
Caleb: My apologies but our tool to generate the activation code is undergoing system update. Kindly contact this number: 877-438-9863. Business hours are 9:00 am to 1:00am Eastern Time. (6:00am to 10:00pm Pacific Time). They are the team that can assist you in activation code
back at square one............
Just wait it out. N if they say to call make up some BS. Say you got some issue with your voice or speaking. If not then try the email route.
he told me to call, i said i had a horrible stuttor and tried to call them already but got frustraited with them not being able to understand me lol. I did send an email so we will see what tommorow brings. Thanks
I took two attempts for me to get a code from them.
They will give you a code - just wait it out.
You can still configure your handset to sync your contacts, email and calendar with windows live whilst your waiting to activate?
If you set-up an outlook exchange account and use the following server address:
server: m.hotmail.com
Domain: leave clear
Username: web
Password: web
I found it wont let you complete the set-up without entering something for the domain. I entered a couple of random characters so you can finish the set-up, then once the account was complete I went back into the email settings and deleted the random characters.
got an reply in email this morning, was excited thought i finally got it! and sure enough all they say is i hear you need to activate, call our office at blah blah blah
im done with WP7, not worth all these attempts to get this ID anymore, going back to droid after i get off work.
LOL .. Before you give up .. one last chance :
Here is my story : I called them when the method was just found, I got an activation code . Tried it but it didn't work, I thought I got it wrong so I called and got another Key. It didn't work either So I hard-resetted WP7 and tried the sec code and it worked .. So now I have the first key which I'm not sure whether I got it correctly or not but you can try it and PM me if it worked :

Not sure if I missed something. What is your country?
I called M$-Support of Germany on Monday this week and they gave me a key while we were on the phone. No question about IMEI but the manufactorer of my phone. I said HTC and there were no further questions.
In parallel I've sent an email to M$-International support last weekend. I received another key just a couple of minutes ago
