Ny regrets?

I am about to order MDA JAM myself and wondering if I am doing the right thing. I currently own XDA 2 imate, which I am trying to sell right now with no apparent luck. New JAM cost about 518 Euro's. 64 megs of RAM...
It's small, nice looking and what I've heard, very stable and very well build. But I still can't justify this upgade...
Please, point a lost soul to the right direction

Is size a major issue for you right now? Do you get alot of strange looks from holding the very PDA-like XDA2 to your ear?
If size is enough of a justification to you, then go for it. Otherwise, you're getting a unit with pretty much the same capabilities. Yes, there is also a 1.3 megapixel camera, but the quality of the pics don't look any better than that of the pics taken with the XDA2.

I had similar concerns when I considered the upgrade, but I have absolutely no regrets now. I have a Pocket PC that is so unobtrusive, I feel so much better. If you travel a lot or move about a lot, keeping track of various things does turn out to be a bother, particularly if you have the rather large xda with you. I feel like I've been freed, somehow.
Just a feeling, but worth the upgrade. BTW, I got a good price for my XDA2 hence the upgrade.

I doubt you will have any regrets either! Just fetch the most possible for your XDA2...

Already sold my XDA 2

It's a nice little unit. Seems pretty solidly built, and I've only had one crash so far when I was trying to run a game.
However, there are definitely downsides. I just switched from a SE Z600 to the Magician, and for one thing the bluetooth is not as stable as the SE. I transfered about 200 contacts yesterday, and the Magician completely stopped receiving about three or four times. I had to turn it off and then back on again to get it working.
The second shortcoming is the phone sound quality. Seriously, this is a major issue that has been discussed on almost all forums dealing with the Magician. It sounds horrible compared to the Z600. We can only hope this will be adressed in a future software upgrade.
Thirdly, the battery could last a little longer. I get about a day and a night's usage out of it before the thing runs dry. Then again, I am a heavy user. My trusty old Z600 lasted about 72 hours before I switched.
Finally, the camera is a massive waste of space on the device. The pictures are dark, grainy, very blurry and almost completly lack color. The only sensible thing to do is to reprogram the camera button to do something useful, and forget that there even is a camera.
Those are my major criticisms towards the Magician. Overall, it is a pretty sweet device that I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to buy a smartphone.

Are you trying to compare a powerful smartphone to a Z600 in terms of battery life??? Jam is one of the most impressive pocketpc phones in terms of battery life!!!
Anyway as for the stability problems I guess we have to wait till they iron all the ROM problems and that is the case with most SE or Nokia phones too! And if you think how much more complex is a pocketpc phone then you can understand that its still too early.
What I have to say is that the English T-Mobile ROM is by far the most stable ROM compared to iMate's and Qtek's ROMS. I also never had any problems with the sound quality and it seems the sound problems are not there in T-Mobile's phones. I guess its a fawlty hardware component in imate's and Qtek's banch of phones! Then again only time will tell if its a software or a hardware problem after all.
As for the camera its really bad at the moment but I guess its a software problem and not just low quality lens! Other people with good knowledge of photoshop filters are saying that the pics are ok but the auto settings of the camera's software are crappy.

I agree that comparing a smartphone with a 400 MHz processor to the Z600 is slightly unfair, but that doesn't mean I am perfectly happy with the battery life of the Magician.
It is decent, since I can go for more than a day without recharging, and I might be able to squeeze some more out by shutting of Bluetooth and lowering the screen brightness.
As for the sound there appears to be two unrelated problems, one of them having to do with poorly constructed legs for the speaker, the other being poor speaker software. I seem to be suffering from the latter.
I have seen the photos that some people claim to be decent after improving them in Photoshop. I am far from impressed. Then again, I have yet to see a camera that produces good quality photos.
Releasing a device with inferior firmware seems like poor business practice to me. I know it has become quite commonplace, but it's still a nuisance. Additionally, as this is not the first Pocket PC Phone from HTC, one would think that they would have ironed out the major faults
My bottom line is: The Magician is far from perfect, but it's a neat and sweet little device. Prior to it I would have never considered buying a Pocket PC phone.

Of course you can! You have to follow my instructions! You will need an SD card 128MB or bigger and a card reader! But remember flashing your phone with T-Mobile's ROM and then getting it to a service for any reason with a different provider's ROM will void your warranty! I would recommend you should wait for a newer iMate ROM where they will iron the bugs so you ll be fine without loosing your warranty.
I was the one that fixed a friend's iMate JAM speaker and as far as I understood the problem in iMate JAM is most probably both hardware and software! If I were to buy an iMate JAM I would wait till they fix all those problems in their production line first and I would make sure I would get a JAM not from the first ones! I am so happy I bought a T-Mobile MDA Compact and not an iMate JAM.
As for the camera YES they should use a better camera. Sometimes I think they only got a 0.3MPixel in JAM and they use an interpolation routine that makes it look like a 1.3MPixel one only in resolution! In my opinion HTC has to think of a CCD camera and not a CMOS in the next models! SonyEricsson S700 is a very good example of a nice cameraphone.
I love my MDA Compact and at the moment there is no other gadget that would keep more happy than it! :wink:

To get better results from the camera, make sure that the sharpness is around 10. The default 5 is horrible and was fixed in some imate extended ROM version.
Regarding colours, make sure you adjust the brightness and contrast. Avoid the default settings, they're horrible. When playing with the brightness or contrast, focus on something red in a light background. The red will help you balance the contrast while the light background will help you balance the brightness.
Changing the above settings will give you some VERY DECENT results for a camera phone. Certainly better than most Nokia and SE phones. Maybe not as good as Sharp's though! :wink:

XDA IIi VS MAGICIAN II

Hello everybody,
It is my first post in this web. I have sold my XDA, two weeks ago, and now i am reading post in different webs about the new realises like XDA IIi, the new magician wi-fi built-in and the MDA IV 3g, because i want to buy a new one, but i don´t know wich one.
I have read about XDA IIi, that the camera is a crap, and the WI-FI ok, the screen worse than XDA IIs, but can anybody tell me more about it?.
The speed of processor, The BT function, Whatever you can about it.
Do you think the new Magician wi-fi built in is a good competitor or is low in services if we compare with XDA IIi.
I would like not to wait for the MDA IV, but do you think it worths?.

Well I'm unimpressed by the XDAIIi tbh.
There are a fair few improvements, like landscape mode in WM2003SE. And the built in WiFi is great. The new Bluetooth manager is allot better also; you actually get some kind of BT management
However the screen really is worse than the XDAII (cant vouch for XDAIIs) I used a friends original XDA and the screen on that was pretty poor, although I cant directly compare it with the XDAIIi anymore as said mate moved away.
It really is a toss up over which features you want most in your XDAII.
I'm still split, and have about a week to decide whether to return it or not.
The cam really is crap! A friend at work needed a quick pic for the web the other day, he laughed at the image and for the rest of the day used his Nokia!!

The choices are still fairly limited- the WiFi Magician and the XDA/MDA IV are still just development models.
The XDA IIi definitely has a problem with the camera, otherwise it is an evolution of the XDA II. The WiFi and Bluetooth enhancements are real improvements, and in the UK, the new O2 Active is getting to the point of being fairly useful, as long as you don't allow it to load after a reset. And of course, WM2003SE is an improvement.
The main problem with the Magician is the lowly memory (64Mb RAM and 64Mb ROM, as opposed to the IIi with 128 RAM and 128 ROM, or the IIs with 128 RAM and 96 ROM). The extra ROM on the IIi amounts to a 59Mb user area additional to the normal RAM.
With regards to the screen- there have been a few faulty ones with a poor resolution and yellowish tinge. Mine is a joy- much clearer and brighter than my XDA II, which always had a rather dark screen.
Even at Normal (416MHz) speed, the IIi is faster than the II or IIs, and at Turbo (524MHz) is much faster but with reduced battery life. When I was benchmarking the IIi against the II using SpB Benchmark, one interesting fact was that RAM writes were slower on the IIi- whether this is down to the O/S or not I can't say, but if the write speeds had been equivalent, then the IIi would have been much faster at both speeds.

Cons on Atom Exec

Can anyone advice wat is the Cons for Atom Exec. Tks

Its a very good handset. I had atom earlier.Exec has a super fast processor.its sound is much louder than atom.its display is robust and only con is baattery drains a bit faster.five star rating from me

Getting one is bad move, personally not recommended! You should compare it with other better handsets around the price range, preferably those made by HTC.

I think a good device to also consider is the Hermes. I can't praise mine enough.

The biggest gripe I have is the battery life. At best, I get two days out of it.
That's with 1-2 phonecalls a day, along with around 3-4 SMS text messages and 2 hours a day FM radio.
Other than that, the device works flawlessly, never have to reset it.

Nokia N95 VS TyTn

I thinking about change my TyTN for Nokia N95. Some one knows where I can find a good comparison review between TyTN and Nokia N95?
Worth change my TyTN by a N95?
Can some body post his/her thoughts about this change.

tytn at the moment but urged for a vga phone like toshiba 900 (or was it g900)

I concur. I have both and i think that they are both awesome phones in their own environment. You just cannot compare the 2 with each other. Its like comparing a truck to a car. They each have their plus. I love the size of the N95 and the camera is awesome. especially after the firmware update. And inorder to save battery i turn off the dual mode band and just keep it on gsm. It probably gets you about 2 extra days of battery life. But i also love my 8525. so much stuff i can do with it. So its just up to you and what you like and what your looking to do with it my friend. Good luck.

How much stable is N95? There is any stability issue on Symbian OS used in this phone? What about usability and applications compared with WM6?
This 5 MPX camera can be compared with real consumer cameras @ 5 MPX or it is average camera if you compare it with Dedicated 5 MPX camera?

A friend of mine has the N95 and is sending it back, it loses signal, the gps doesnt work, battery life is appalling, sometimes people cant hear him. He is now getting a tytn after using mine.

Thank God his is not HoFo. You would have had all the crazy Nokia and HTC fanboys at eachothers throats.
It really comes down to what your expectations are out of the gadget. Replying emails and the like, work related things. TyTN all the way due to the keyboard. Remember, the N95 is being sold as a media heavy phone, not business. Check the specs.
GPS is not the best but is far from the worst and the battery is anemic. However Hermes doesn't even have GPS so there is a point there. But the battery, is an issue, especially for such a hardware heavy phone. You will notice a lot of people say they can extend the battery life by cutting down usage, well, ironically the phone was made to be used. That is something Nokia has yet to wise up, since it goes for size over function. Just like the N80. Putting anything under 1000mAh on phones like this is just irresponsible.
Anyway, see what you need and then simply match it. Don't get me wrong the N95 is a impressive phone but with a few flaws, just like TyTN. Find which one fits best.

Exactly, everyone has their own flavors. I love both my phones and have had no problems at all with them. Maybe cause i take real good care of them too. The camera on the N95 is comparable to some 5mpx cameras. Clear enough to print. MY battery on the n95 last about 3 days with heavy texting and moderate phone calls placed. I love the symella program that you can get on symbian phones. kind of like wintorrent. Download tons of songs thru the wifi or edge. The lack of 3g for the us is one thing that really kind of bummed me out on this phone. But its all good, And good luck with the purchase.

Thanks for your replies. I just wanted N95 for GPS and Camera, but both are not top of line in multimedia phones or dedicated hardware.
I guess that I will kept my TyTN.

One of them is a phone with a few computer functions on it and the other is a computer with a few phone functions. Which you want depends on how you will use the phone.
Having had a good play with his N95, I can confirm it is a stunningly good phone - the camera is better than my Sony DSC-P12 and the screen is a joy to behold.
For me though, I can't get over that it's not touch screen - makes it too awkward to use properly.
I'd have one as a second phone and it would give me problems whenever I leave the house while I made my mind up which one to take but...the question is, would I swap my Vario II for it?

You are comparing two different kind of devices. TyTn using windows wheather Nokia using Symbian. What you wanted to do with your mobile on the go. It depends on the functions it is offering and your needs. About 5MP camera well it will take the picture that big you can make it wallpaper in your kitchen. I am using camera phones since 3 years now still have 2MP camera phone. But I never use it for photography. Man you can't use it as professional camera. Anyhow I am not professional but whenever I take pictures I use digital camera other than my phone device.

The Tytn is a computer trying to be a phone - but hey, its doing a better job at it !!

I first had the tytn and I was curious about a symbian cellphone, so I sold my tytn and bought a N95.
I'm a little bit disappointed of symbian. The menu is really slow and it crashes once a day. In general, if you use the phone a little bit you can charge it every day. If you don't use it that much you have to charge it every 2-3 days.
Another problem is the missing touchscreen because it is just comfortable to scroll or tab on the screen, select more than one item, ...
The quallity of the n95 is also not the best, the zero-key was scrooping and you can hear the display while calling someone (but this is not that annoying).
But the camera is really nice, it is not as good as a digital camera but still very good.
So, at the moment I am buying the tytn again and I selling the n95.

Herald Or G900

Hello Everyone!
I ordered Herald yesterday. Probably at the end of this week I am gonna be holding it in my hands. Even though; I can not stop thinking about Toshiba Protege G900. It has got pretty good pros compared to Herald. Should I cancel my order and buy a G900? My hesitation comes from:
1- Obviously Cpu Speed. 201 vs. 520 Mhz. (Well. Some say G900 is slow and laggy due to high resolution)
2- Price. G900 is 50 bucks cheaper in my country.(I do not mind that a lot actually)
3- Htc has 16 Kb of level 1 cache, G900 has 32 kb (I do not know what does that effect)
4-Htc has 64 Mb of ram when G900 has 128 mb
5-Bigger, better screen with higher resolution on G900
6-G900 has 2.5mm audio jack
7-G900 has 3G
8-Well, as you can see G900 looks like a newer better technology but, Some people on the review sites say that G900 has a poor battery and overall performance even when overclocked, due to high resolution. Plus It it not compitable with a lot of software because of high resolution issues.
So what do you say? Should I get "the better but untrustworthy one" or "good old slow reliable one"?

Let me tell you something, you'll probably throw the G900 into the wall after a week of use. Even the latest firmware has not fully cured the its very popular SOD(sleep of death) in which the device does not comes out of standby. This happens even more if you put your device in standby with data connections running. Couple this with the instability it posses and no support from Toshiba(they say that they wont be rolling out any new firmwares for G900), I would say, why buy something so expensive which is just so unreliable and whose specs only look good on paper and not in reality.
I'm using herald(dopod C800) from the past 1month and perfectly happy with it. I jumped to it from O2 Atom Life(which has 624Mhz processor & still feel, it was slower than Herald). I'm happy with my decision. I m a happy customer and have even ordered a Black Armor(metal) case for it from Boxwave.com since this is going to be a keeper for sure
edit: Herald is not slow at all if you overclock it(which is harmless and does not effect the battery life much). Also, the ROMs here will make your device much more reliable, stable and faster.
