Herald: Is it as good as it looks?

Hello Everyone with a Herald,
My JasJar just died (RIP) and i'm looking for something to replace it (and possibly my Ubiquio 501)...
I love the look of the Herald and it's slim form factor (but still with a great size keyboard). The OMAP 850 seems to be quite snappy too...?
I also think it might sit quite nicely between my old JasJar and the Ubiquio 501 that i have. I have tended to carry them both around most of the time...
But i have just one question... (and probably others out there would like to know the same).
Are you happy with it?

I have a treo 750v which i think is the best phone ever built. My gf bought me a Hearld for Christmas. I've used it 3 times as my main phone. While it is a great phone size wise it's really nice, the kb is roomy and has a great feel to it. The screen is just breath taking. It's a GREAT upgrade to the wizard, if you don;t need 3G then it's probably the best PPC out there with a big screen and wifi. To me it's the second best PPC out there compared to my treo. Hope this helps? Let me know if you have any questions.
P.S. the soft touch paint is really nice also. The only downside to the phone is it's weight, it's pretty heavy. 174g compared to my treo which is 154, and my P990 which is 150g

Thanks for the tips... Bizarrely, my Universal has just resurrected itself, so will keep on with it for the time being... was seriously tempted with the Herald though, it's really nice! As you say, the black paint finish is amazing!

I have recently bought a new Herald, since my Prophet has passed over (RIP) and my wife wouldn't land me hers.
I had to take a decision in a few minutes: I had both a TyTN and a P4350 on my hands... I went for the latter.
PROS:
Keyboard. No other device compares to the Herald's keyboard. In terms of touch and opening mechanism.
The form factor is pretty close to the Prophet's. It's just a little bit thinner, but a little bit longer... you wouldn't notice the difference anyway.
Screen luminosity is tremendous: you can read it even under the sunlight.
Battery lasts long enough to forget you have to recharge it, from time to time.
AKU 3.2 put a new life into this device. I'm not using OmapClock anymore... To my experience, only Skype still suffer from CPU slowness.
With that black finishing, the 4350 is... beautiful. Simply.
CONS:
Mini USB and Headphones share the same plug. Thus either you charge it or you listen to your music. So bad.
It's a little bit heavier than the Prophet, but still below 180gr.
MicroSD. To me that is the real shame. I have a 4GB SD that has now became useless. Also the cost is higher: ~30EUR for a 1GB MicroSD vs ~19 for a 1GB SD.
My 2 cents.

I've had my P4350 for the past week and I love it. My previous PPC edition was a Jam, and the P4350 seems smaller. The keyboard is great and the operating system seems a lot faster than the Jam, despite having half the clock speed. The D-Pad is fantastic for one-handed use.
I got mine from egadgetdepot and I highly recommend them. They shipped it same day and threw in an additional Charger, Car Charger and a decent screen protector.

Nokia N95 VS TyTn

Hi,
I thinking about change my TyTN for Nokia N95. Some one knows where I can find a good comparison review between TyTN and Nokia N95?
Worth change my TyTN by a N95?
Can some body post his/her thoughts about this change.

tytn at the moment but urged for a vga phone like toshiba 900 (or was it g900)

I concur. I have both and i think that they are both awesome phones in their own environment. You just cannot compare the 2 with each other. Its like comparing a truck to a car. They each have their plus. I love the size of the N95 and the camera is awesome. especially after the firmware update. And inorder to save battery i turn off the dual mode band and just keep it on gsm. It probably gets you about 2 extra days of battery life. But i also love my 8525. so much stuff i can do with it. So its just up to you and what you like and what your looking to do with it my friend. Good luck.

How much stable is N95? There is any stability issue on Symbian OS used in this phone? What about usability and applications compared with WM6?
This 5 MPX camera can be compared with real consumer cameras @ 5 MPX or it is average camera if you compare it with Dedicated 5 MPX camera?

A friend of mine has the N95 and is sending it back, it loses signal, the gps doesnt work, battery life is appalling, sometimes people cant hear him. He is now getting a tytn after using mine.

Thank God his is not HoFo. You would have had all the crazy Nokia and HTC fanboys at eachothers throats.
It really comes down to what your expectations are out of the gadget. Replying emails and the like, work related things. TyTN all the way due to the keyboard. Remember, the N95 is being sold as a media heavy phone, not business. Check the specs.
GPS is not the best but is far from the worst and the battery is anemic. However Hermes doesn't even have GPS so there is a point there. But the battery, is an issue, especially for such a hardware heavy phone. You will notice a lot of people say they can extend the battery life by cutting down usage, well, ironically the phone was made to be used. That is something Nokia has yet to wise up, since it goes for size over function. Just like the N80. Putting anything under 1000mAh on phones like this is just irresponsible.
Anyway, see what you need and then simply match it. Don't get me wrong the N95 is a impressive phone but with a few flaws, just like TyTN. Find which one fits best.

Exactly, everyone has their own flavors. I love both my phones and have had no problems at all with them. Maybe cause i take real good care of them too. The camera on the N95 is comparable to some 5mpx cameras. Clear enough to print. MY battery on the n95 last about 3 days with heavy texting and moderate phone calls placed. I love the symella program that you can get on symbian phones. kind of like wintorrent. Download tons of songs thru the wifi or edge. The lack of 3g for the us is one thing that really kind of bummed me out on this phone. But its all good, And good luck with the purchase.

Thanks for your replies. I just wanted N95 for GPS and Camera, but both are not top of line in multimedia phones or dedicated hardware.
I guess that I will kept my TyTN.

I've got a hermes and one of the gyus i work with has got an N95.
One of them is a phone with a few computer functions on it and the other is a computer with a few phone functions. Which you want depends on how you will use the phone.
Having had a good play with his N95, I can confirm it is a stunningly good phone - the camera is better than my Sony DSC-P12 and the screen is a joy to behold.
For me though, I can't get over that it's not touch screen - makes it too awkward to use properly.
I'd have one as a second phone and it would give me problems whenever I leave the house while I made my mind up which one to take but...the question is, would I swap my Vario II for it?

You are comparing two different kind of devices. TyTn using windows wheather Nokia using Symbian. What you wanted to do with your mobile on the go. It depends on the functions it is offering and your needs. About 5MP camera well it will take the picture that big you can make it wallpaper in your kitchen. I am using camera phones since 3 years now still have 2MP camera phone. But I never use it for photography. Man you can't use it as professional camera. Anyhow I am not professional but whenever I take pictures I use digital camera other than my phone device.

The Tytn is a computer trying to be a phone - but hey, its doing a better job at it !!

I first had the tytn and I was curious about a symbian cellphone, so I sold my tytn and bought a N95.
I'm a little bit disappointed of symbian. The menu is really slow and it crashes once a day. In general, if you use the phone a little bit you can charge it every day. If you don't use it that much you have to charge it every 2-3 days.
Another problem is the missing touchscreen because it is just comfortable to scroll or tab on the screen, select more than one item, ...
The quallity of the n95 is also not the best, the zero-key was scrooping and you can hear the display while calling someone (but this is not that annoying).
But the camera is really nice, it is not as good as a digital camera but still very good.
So, at the moment I am buying the tytn again and I selling the n95.

Successor for my Wizard?

What would you recommend as my next phone? Been using the Wizard phones for over 2 years now and the only complaints I have are the low battery life (compared to e.g. Nokia 9300i), occasional slow-downs/freezes (for example when opening apps or swithching the screen from diagonal to horizontal) and difficult one-hand operation (frustrating but understandable due to the form factor).
So could there be a HTC phone that would overcome at least some of the above three flaws (mainly the slow-downs as I hate them but also the battery life could be better...)
Suggestions for my next phone? It doesn't have to be the latest model... both my Wizards I bought used and I will probably never buy a brand new phone because there's so many good second-hand ones available these days.

Think it`s good time for Kaiser for you. Of course it`s almost same functionality as Wizard, but with gps integrated. Think that`s battery life may be the same as in Wizard but slowing down will not be problem. Wish to have FM radio onboard...hmm maybe in future it is possible.

Hmmm well i would suggest hermes or kaiser....but....
both my wizard and hermes died of quality issues...(or maybe flashing!!!), so not sure if i would recommend another htc...
iphone might be an option if you are not into cooking or flash junkie like me...LOL

I Dream of a new Phone

You know, at some point you almost have to wonder how much more do we really "need" in software.
Things we needed were GPS, wifi tether and better audio. We have all that now in hacks, workarounds. While we didn't need to OC that's just a nice bonus along with apps2sd but the fact still remains, it's a phone.
The sad thing about the G1 is the hardware and particularly the camera/video functions among others.
Thank goodness for android and google. They really got it right and are really pushing the technology, which makes it exciting. One day we'll have hardware that's as good as android and the development going on at this forum but even today we have so much more functionality than the typical phones out there.
I was a blackberry user for many years. I liked blackberry for one reason. They just did what they were supposed to do.
My son and I were out of town the other day and we had this discussion. (he works for T-mo.) I asked him if you were stranded and had only one phone call to make, would he pick his BB or his MT3g. He said without hesitation, the BB and I concurred. It's not that we could not count on Android, but if we were betting our survival on it, the BB hardware would get the call.
I like the g1 better than any other phone out there right now. The virtual keyboards lacks a lot to be desired. Having the best android phone and the work that Enom, Cyan and others have made a pretty lame hardware phone better obviously but we still have a ways to go on hardware.
I've looked at all of the newer offerings out there but always come back to the G1. Fact is, as lame as it is, it's still better than all of them.
Who will make a really fine android phone is anyone's guess. If you have not followed some of the pocket video cameras that technology is really moving along. We can already do 1080p/30fps and 720p/60 in the Kodak zi8. Panasonic and Canon both have optical image stabilizers that actually work and shoot still images at 5mp and up. Some are using Zeiss and Leica lenses. Get some of that technology inside an android phone along with a flash and you really have a "camera phone".
I never understood why HTC and others put the speaker on the back away from your ears. As small as the speakers are, it only makes sense to put them where you can hear them. If your phone is to be used for an mp3 player, video player, GPS device, speaker phone why not put the sound where you ears are?
It also boggles my mind why something with all these capabilities, like gps wifi, email, web surfing and such a large screen has such pathetic battery life. The stock battery is about 900mah usable as we know, and that's a battle we fight every single day.
One of these days it's going to dawn on manufactures what we actually need in a all in one device. The OS is solid and getting better everyday, but the hardware is lagging waaay behind from current state of the art and some of these designs for android are only incremental and cosmetic upgrades at best and some of the makers are STILL missing the point entirely.
If it's going to be a phone that does multimedia, surf the web and has a camera, let's bring up the hardware changes up to the rest of the technology and I suspect many of us will leave the G1 far behind. Until then, my G1 has to stay.
Oh yeah, one more thing, if it's going to be a camera phone, add a tripod mount to the bottom of the phone. How hard could that be?

IMO they leave all the high tech junk out to keep the cost down. Before android, I always wanted the TP2, or the htc fuze. The high sticker price is what kept it out of reach for me. These htc android phones retail for a steep amount already, if the add high-def cameras, state of the art processors, big RAM and screens the cost will be out of the "average consumer price range". I've seen a couple smartphones that cost well over a grand, I think that's what your looking for
Remember 10 years back, phone screens were monocrome, ringers were just beeps, and motorola was king. Give it some time, maybe in another ten years all that you described will be standard in a smartphone.

Even Nokia in the N series has a much better camera for a camera phone. While it's still SD it does an excellent job for video and the "N" price is about the same as a G1.
You can buy one of the Panny Lumix P&S cameras for about $200.00 at costco that does 720p/30 that have both optical zoom and optical IS and very sharp lenses and that's a full fledged camera. I just can't see it costing that much more for something similar and even if we didn't have HD, we still should have something usable for our G1 which we don't right now.
Look at the Creative Vado, that thing is 99.00 and while it's not state of the art, it does a surprisingly good job at video.
The G1 was $599.00 when it first came out. That's pretty steep for the hardware we actually received. HTC didn't even give us a headphone jack. Who's bright idea was that one for a "multimedia device"? Yes we can add one with some drilling and soldering, but why should we for $600.00?
The "upgrade" if you can call it that, to the MT3g was ram and styling. HTC still didn't see the need for a headphone jack. FINALLY, they heard us and gave us a headphone jack in the Touch Pro 2. Like I said, I think we get incremental upgrades in these HTC phones for whatever reason. I'm not shelling out for another phone unless I see some real improvements which I haven't seen in the last year.
The virtual keyboards are hard to use, I'm much faster with the hardware keyboard. Great idea, but not ready for prime time IMO. If HTC is going to mandate I use one like the MT3g, better make it really work well, which let's face it, it does not.
I'm not telling you anything you don't know, we all have the g1 on here. I just wish someone would do better and I'm hoping one day they will because I believe in Android but I'm not happy with the HTC hardware or their design flaws. I think we all could agree on that point.
I just ordered an extended battery for my G1 because I don't see anything coming soon worth replacing it. I wish it wasn't so, but appears to be the case from my viewpoint at least.

I don't see me changing from a G1/Dream for a long time, especially with the new Tmo contract set up. I am no longer on a contract, so that means the next time I want a phone, I have to pay for the phone in installments for 20 months or up front. That alone will make me think harder about an upgrade in phones. The "minor" improvements for me have not been worth the pricetags they have been asking, so If and when my G1 dies or I feel the need for a new phone, I will just use my insurance to get a new one for 100 dollars. Maybe by then the g1 will be phased out and I will get a g2

I was pretty happy with the g1 when i got it. the hardware is pretty decent though the camera is a let down.
The stock battery is actually 1150 which is the same as what my old mda vario had and that is a smaller battery aswell. Ive toyed with the idea of getting an extended battery but i dunno if i could deal with the extra bulk it adds to the phone.
what baffles me is that the g2/hero is practicaly the same phone, without a hardware keyboard. the only difference i have found is more ram. i would have expected a cpu upgrade atleast.
there is 1 android device that catches my eye and thats the verizon. it looks to have a much larger screen.
im hanging off until another droid phone comes out that has a full upgrade, cpu mem, camera and screen.
the screen was a disapointment being actually smaller than it looks in pictures, and very noticably smaller than the iphone. and thats what makes the virtual keyboard a little difficult, is that hhalf inch of less csreen width comapred to the iphone

Well, all of 1150 is not usable because it cuts off at 900 to save settings. Ever notice when the phone won't start you still have a little battery life left? That's the 15% you cannot use. Yes, it's 1150, but only 900 until your phone does not work.
There is a thread on here about the Yoobao battery where someone came up with these numbers. Bottom line is it's 900 usable.

The phone shuts off and refuses to turn on when it cannot operate with stability with the voltage that the battery is currently providing. Phones don't save a few mah to save settings because they mostly use non volatile memory to store data nowadays (taking out the battery won't erase your settings)...

Might get the DHD (Inspire), Some questions.

I have some questions for you dhd owners as they are basiclly the same phone, please be honest.
1.how is the screen quality? With super Amoleds and iphone and atrix's high res screens how does the super LCD hold up? Does it look good in person? Text look good? Is it much better looking then say a 3GS? Very important to me, I want a good screen as I went from the Captivate to the 3G3 (my Captivate broke) and it was a huge downgrade imo.
2.Does the LED light do blue, red, yellow as well or just green and orange?
3.How is the camera quality? Wasnt impressed with the N1's camera and I here the desires was bad as well, this good?
4.How is the phone in person? Build quality? Does it feel REALLY big?
5.Will they get 2.3 officially? Beyond? And will it be supported a lot by xda devs in the future?
6.Music quality is very important to me, is the audio loud and good through headphones?
7.is the phone call quality loud and clear, another problem I had with my N1 and I eventually had to get rid of it because the call quality was too low.
8.Battery, be honest. How is it?
9.And finally how happy are you with your DHD and would you reccomend it to someone at this point in time?

1. The screen quality is very good. (S)AMOLED vs (S)LCD is a thing that is really down to personal preference. I find LCDs better than AMOLEDs because the colors look more realistic. IMO the only thing AMOLEDs are better is the true black. Viewing angles in AMOLEDs are useless. You never look at your phone at that angle. Compared to iPhone 3G screen the DHD is mindblowing (I think 3GS has the same screen as 3G). Even compared to iPhone 4 the DHD holds its ground. Pixel density is lower but the big screen experience makes up for that.
2. Although the LED is tri-color and theoreticaly it can produce any color, AFAIK there is no way to make it flash other than green or amber for now.
3. Camera quality is good, minding it's a HTC's phone. You can check the camera guide in the sticky thread, there are ways you can improve the camera performance and some actual pictures taken with the DHD.
4. Build quality is amaising. It's my first phone with alluminum body and it makes a difference. Some users reported SIM and/or battery cover misalignment, but I have nothing of the sort. Also on mine DHD the camera is slightly misaligned with the body, but it doesn't interfere with its performance. Actualy I had the same issue with my second Touch HD, while the first one I had was perfect. Anyway that doesn't make photos blurry or anything.
The DHD might seem big, but in a few days you'll realise that it's just that all the other phones are small . I got used to it pretty fast. The fact that most of the area is used by the screen makes it's size reasonable. There is no feeling of a waste of space like on the iPhone.
5. I suppose the DHD will get 2.3 from HTC. Not so sure for anything else, but I'm willing to bet this great forum will not leave the DHD behind
6. The stock headphones are crap. With some quality headphones you can get great sound. Also SRS and Dolby make a difference.
7. Again there are user that complain about low in-call volume. I had no such issues, but it seems that if the headspeaker is not aligned with your ear the volume drops significantly.
8. Battery is good enough. With moderate to heavy use it easily lasts a day. At first it seems bad, because a/ it's still not conditioned and b/ you play with your new phone way too much. Once the excitement about your new toy has passed and the battery has few cycles behind it's back things improve. Charging every night is a must though. I could go through two days only with minimum usage.
9. Being my first Android I'm very excited about the DHD. I bought mine in late October and since then I had no reasons to be sorry about my purchase.
Anyway, if you have the chance to try the phone in person, I suggest you do it. Everyone demands different things from his/her phone and it's always best to see how you feel with the phone.

In that case I really think you should try it in a shop and decide for yourself. These are things that can most easily be checked with a live unit. Camera, volume, sound quality require more tweaking and time to evaluate, but screen and size are the two most noticable things in the phone

Yup on the 13th I will go to ATT and check out the inspire, I am kinda worried about the battery life but then again it cant be as bad as the 3GS im using...

Big and more portable then a tablet or Dell streak 5"
The screen is more natural then the s-amoled screens. No hard non-natural colors bumping in to your eyes.

6. The stock headphones are crap. With some quality headphones you can get great sound. Also SRS and Dolby make a difference.
7. Again there are user that complain about low in-call volume. I had no such issues, but it seems that if the headspeaker is not aligned with your ear the volume drops significantly.
8. Battery is good enough. With moderate to heavy use it easily lasts a day. At first it seems bad, because a/ it's still not conditioned and b/ you play with your new phone way too much. Once the excitement about your new toy has passed and the battery has few cycles behind it's back things improve. Charging every night is a must though. I could go through two days only with minimum usage.
9. Being my first Android I'm very excited about the DHD. I bought mine in late October and since then I had no reasons to be sorry about my purchase.
Anyway, if you have the chance to try the phone in person, I suggest you do it. Everyone demands different things from his/her phone and it's always best to see how you feel with the phone.

About audio volume, generally, I dont have any problems but playing YouTube video's useually nets me very low/weak volume. I have no idea why but everything else plays loud. It might be an app issue, methinks.

The only thing that really sucks is the mic.

1. Screen quality is great. Text is clear, images look wonderful, video is more than watchable on a screen this size (all depending on the source, of course).
2. I've only ever seen green and orange, but I've never needed any other colour.
3. It's an HTC phone; The camera is an afterthought, really. Autofocus performs well, images are typical for a camera phone really. For a quick snap at a party it's great, if you want photos to remember take a digital compact with you.
4. I found the phone very big to begin with, but got used to it very quickly. A lot of reviewers said it was too big to use one handed, but that's all I ever do now. I have big hands and can reach the screen with minimal adjustment. If you have smaller hands, you may have more of an issue. FWIW, typing even in portrait mode with both thumbs is easy on a screen this size.
5. No idea about Gingerbread officially, but I wouldn't be surprised if we got 3.0 on it too. Should be able to run the improved UI as the DHD has a dedicated graphics chip and capable CPU.
6. I sold my iPod. Enough said.
7. Like many people, I find that you need the phone placed very exactly over your ear to get good volume out of it. I also find that unless the phone is pressed against my cheek, the person on the other end has trouble hearing me. Not a big deal, just needed to adjust how I hold my phone.
8. I'd like more battery life, obviously, but I get a day out of it with moderate use, a weekend with light use.
9. I would absolutely recommend the DHD to anyone who wanted an android phone with a large screen, capable software and hardware, and the money to afford one. I almost sold it to get a Motorola Defy, but I'm glad I didn't.

In my Oppinion the size is not too big. But if you take the DHD than take another Phone, the other one will fell REALLY small!

I am trying to recommend a AT&T phone for my mom, and I am thinking Inspire or atrix. I was leaning toward inspire because it will be available sooner, has a bigger screen, and a higher Megepixel camera. (plus I like my friends EVO)
I know that everybody likes to defend their phone, it is only natural,but please provide some cold hard feedback. There seems to be a lot of not so minor issues with this phone.
problems seem to be mounting from the feedback online:
1. Battery life is bad. every other 4"+ smartphone has a 1500 mah battery, and still have battery problems, so why make it even worse with a 1230 mah?
2. I am hearing the camera sucks. That is just the opposite of my Vibrant I find the pictures and video are incredibly good, and everyone always asks "did you really take that with your phone?" I figured an 8mp camera should be even better than the 5mp on my samsung, am I wrong about that?
3 The Mic sucks? what does this mean? Do people conplain about sound quality on phonecalls?
Dont get me wrong I love HTC build quality as I have had their phones before, but I dont want to buy a phone that I already know has some not so small problems. I also dont want my mom to have to tweak the heck out of the phone to make the battery last a day, or turn the screen down to where she can barely see it, or turn off 3g for goodness sake.
Are the problems popping up on the forums overblown? should I pick up an inspire, or should we wait for the Atrix?

I'm a HTC die hard but I've had more issues with the DHD than any other devices before it.
A few (key) issues...
- Random reboots. Happened today during a call when an appointment alarm sounded off. Sometimes it just reboots when idle..
- Screen freeze - sometimes the device will not reach on touch input. Wait it out or reboot...
- Lag problem. The unofficial "USB fix" with reduced lags significantly, but not 100% on my device
- Bluetooth is slow to connect and sometimes only connects with HS profile (no A2DP). Half the times it's okay though. Also, A2DP disconnects randomly.
- Integration with Google navi removed in FW 1.72. But even with FW 1.32 there were problems - ex. Google Navi failing to lookup adress' searched from car panel.
This being a flagship device I expected a lot more. I still like HTC devices but I honestly cannot recommend the DHD to anyone.

There is something seriously wrong with your phone. For more than 3 months now, I didn't experienced a single random reboot, the only delay I have in touch input is when the phone is installing something and I think that's normal, the only lag issue I had experienced was back in the days when we had no permroot and I had the old version of Visionary (even without temprooting the device). The lag was gone as soon as I deinstalled Visionary, but I turned on USB debugging just in case. I only use BT to connect to my handsfree while driving and when transfering files to/from my laptop and had no problems with that. Don't know about Google navigation because it's not available in Bulgaria, the only flaw in the preinstalled navi app IMO is that it has no landscape mode.
Anyway check what you have installed on your phone and if you have overclocked, reduce the max freq, because the reboots you experience are deffinately not normal nor common.

Well mate you should go to a service center whit your DHD a friend of mine has simular problems and in the first serie s of the DHD is a lot that gives problems he went back whit it and they give him a new one

You do have a faulty phone i believe because i do not have does issues..
As for call phone volume i m on the stock rom and i don't have that kind of issues, weird maybe i put right in the first place i don't know.

1. Screen is fab. My original desire amoled screen wasn't as sharp as dhd and I love it.
2. Size well at first I thought it will be to big but after few days i've got use to it and now holding anything smaller feels weird
3. Build quality well. No problems here really. My SIM cover has maybe 1mm gap but I use barely there protection case and don't pay attention to it.
Aluminium body is great but due to the phone being so thin quite often it slips of my hand but with protective case it makes it slightly thicker and it's just right now...
4. Battery is ok I can easily get day use and it's actually better than original desire
5. Camera well I'm not a photographer but photos look very good to me and I love sense photo enhance feature
6. Sound quality well ring tone could be Lauder and i've not been using my phone as mp3 player.
Voice quality is ok imo

What I dont like about the DHD?
1. The battery cover. That thing is damn hard to open.
2. That excess sealing thing at the right side of the LCD.
3. Volume rocker. Its a little to flush and difficult to use.
