Few annoying problems - Mogul, XV6800 General

I am using DCD's 3.0.4 wm 6.1 rom. I only have sbp pocketplus and a third part digital clock installed on the today screen. Also only have s2u2 and touchflo starting up on the phone. For some reason the phone randomly locks up on a softreset, all I can do is turn the phone on or off from that point. I must softreset again to get the phone to function correctly.
The second problem I am having is I do not have a data plan and for some reason my phone keeps trying to connect to the internet. This just started happening yesterday randomly. I have put in a username for the data connection so it cannot automatically log in and charge up data on my bill. But every month somehow I have about $5 of data used. Is there any way to completely turn off data on this phone.
Thanks in advance!

don't worry, if you have sprint, your maxiumim inet fee wll be $75 lol. I have unlimited, but they apparently canceled that for a few days and i got the max charge of inet usage of $75, that's how I know about the price.
It's probably the SPB suit you're using. For example, I run one that has the weather. In order to update the weather, it connects to the inet. That could be the reason it's doing so. Otherwise, none of my SPB programs i run connect automatically that i am aware of.
It could also be something built into the rom, but i doubt it.
Search the tweeks sections for disabling the inet. I know there is a program that limits your inet time for this reason. You could set it to 1 second, since you are billed by KB not time.

I just recently got a data plan, even though I had the phone since September. I recommend calling Sprint (or whatever carrier you have) and requesting that they put a block on the data connection. If they do it right, then it will disable the data usage. If not, they will at least flag your account so that you can demand a reimbursement (which is what I did every month because they had trouble doing it right). The other thing you can do is go to start\settings\connections\connections\manage existing connections and then delete the Sprint PCS #777 connection by clicking and holding it. That will fix the problem until u do a hard reset.

Rom Update --> Data Call Failure Error

I have the xv6800 and I'm on Verizon. I just updated my rom to 3.57.605.1 from Verizon's website.
After *228 I was able to make calls, but now I have this persistent error:
Data Call Failure
Error Code: 11
PPP Connection Error
I do not have a data plan and dont want one. I only use wi-fi. This popup is annoying.
Can somebody tell me how to kill it, or how to fix whatever is wrong? What on my phone is trying to use the data connection so I can disable it?
Verizon tech support was useless.
holy cow, go this too! what is this about?
Just flashed my new xv6900 today. everything is working, i believe...but keep getting this ppp error.
Any resolution on your end?
Nothing. I imagine we're some of the first people to go through this.
A week or two ago, Verizon issued a statement saying all new customers with pda phones as of November (not sure exact day) will be REQUIRED to purchase a data plan.
I think the *228 process is now going to verify a data plan on pda phones and since I dont have one, I'm stuck with the error. Either that or my phone cannot properly "handshake" with Verizon since I dont have the plan.
I was on the phone with support for 2 hours last night. They're useless. We even tried giving me a data plan long enough to let the phone sync with the server, but this morning I got the error again.
I'm sure someone can find a registry edit to get rid of the message. I think that would be enough for me. My only concern, is if my phone is persistently trying to establish that data call, it'll eat my already-weak battery up in no time.
That is why I'd prefer a solution to disable the whole thing. I'm still waiting on the kind people here at XDA. These guys know more about Vz's phones than they do.
In "connections" I deleted the Verizon data network connection, but it comes right back. I wonder if that was not there before the rom update and maybe that is what's trying to call out?
I had such good luck cook'n my 6700 but this 6900 is not so fun.
My message has gone away after about 10 minutes after the programming. even knowing i could do txtmsg and call on my phone i could not get into voicemail, it stated i could not be verifed...so I think it just needed some more time. i'm keeping my fingers crossed.
but now I have to flash again...more problems.
FYI: i do have a dataplan...
I was right about the battery problems at least.
My phone finished charging at 3:00 pm and sat on my desk (no calls or use) until 8:00 pm when I got an emergency low battery notification.
Whatever my phone is doing is blowing through battery life.
Sounds like normal life for a wm phone with the data turned on!
Must be looking and burning power just like roam does.
DMU RESET
According to the Verizon 3rd tier people I was speaking with last night they simply need to do a DMU reset on your account and phone. This is where they rebuild the account on their servers but first level tech support will never be allowed to help you here. This was done for me after the *228, *22899, *832, and many many other attempts at reconnecting my phone.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for letting me know! I was starting to think I wasnt going to get any help. I'm calling Vz tomorrow.
I called Vz tonight and they said there was no such thing as 3rd tier support.
He said DMU would only help if I had a data plan and I wanted to re-establish my data plan. I want to permanently disable my data entirely. Were you doing the same thing?
Either way they couldnt help me. If your issue was the same as mine, let me know and I'll call back and push them harder.

"Once gone from there, I deleted the connections under settings/connections/connections/mange existing connections and they've never reappeared since. So now I just create a new connection when I need it, and delete it when I'm done. It keeps me from going over my limit ($25 data plan). "
Deleted the connection and the issue is gone. FYI
This is my first contribution to xda-forums! I'm glad I can help at all when I've benefitted so much... Thanks to all!
NOTE: After the following steps, Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably will want to use Nodata, and NOT the following solution. You just might have to open Nodata and disable the data connection every time you soft-reset.
I was finally able to completely 100% block the 3g data connection on my Verizon XV6800 (aka Mogul aka Titan) was the following three steps:
1. The key culprit is HTC_CM_Guardian.exe in the windows directory. I couldn't edit it or delete it via Total Commander file explorer, but I was able to rename it! This makes the OS unable to find the program when it tries to re-set the Data connection settings.
2. Under Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > "Select which networks are automatically used," hit "Select Networks."
3. Under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" hit "New...".
4. Enter any name you want (mine's "nodata!") and leave all the other settings blank.
5. Save and exit! Voila!
Wifi--yes; 3g--no!
Modaco's Nodata program is awesome, but the problem was that HTC_CM_Guardian.exe re-enabled the data connection every time I reset the phone. Plus, HTC_CM_Guardian.exe would also thwart any effort to block data via the "Connection Settings." By renaming HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and creating a "nodata!" connection that programs auto-connecting to the internet would try to use (and fail), we get three results:
1. Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably won't to use this solution.
2. When you reboot, the OS is unable to mess-up your "Connection Settings", so
3. Unless you have an active wifi connection, programs will try to connect to the Internet using the "nodata!" settings, which, being empty, will fail, exactly as planned.
Hope it helps.

Avoiding Data Charges

My wife and I are going to Europe for a month this summer and we would like to bring our phones to use as portable wifi devices. What is the best way to guarantee that we get no data/text messaging/phone charges?
Ideally we could just remove the sim card but I heard you can't use the device when you do this (even for wifi). Is this true even if we have sim unlocked the device? Do we have to install ADP1 for this trip to do this?
I also read that we could change the APN to something invalid and that would prevent data charges but what if someone text messages us?
Thanks
As long as your device is activated, as in you are not prompted to sign into your Google account when you turn on the phone, you will be fine. Just take the SIM out of the phone when you arrive.
you could always disable the radios. There are ways to turn off cell radios and leave wifi or even turn of data all together but leave the cell radio on.

There's an app on the market that lets you disable/enable your APN settings with a simple tap or two. Search for APN.
it is called APNDroid, its brilliant! Really easy to use. One click to disable APN's, click again to re-enable them!
I'm on prepaid right now so I'm trying to not use data at all. However, even with apndroid and turning off all 3g/data, I was still losing money in my prepaid account. The only thing that I could do to stop the random charges is to uninstall any apps that require internet access (last.fm, skype, etc).
Just a warning for anyone travelling - it looks like 3rd party apps can access data even if you disable it on the g1. You can google reports of people getting charged crazy amounts of roaming data charges even after turning off their data.
I had problem last month where i unlocked my g1 to use with the 3 network, worked great and i was very happy. I did not realise however that the g1 was for whatever reason using the 3g internet rather than my wifi, for some reason or another it continuously was charging me for data i thought i was getting form my wifi! over £100 the g1 cost me in that little incident.
My advice to you is either take out your sim or use the apn blocker. I would not even put your sim in when in another country!
Does anyone see any fault in this plan of mine to avoid data charges after buying the phone (I'm going to get it today or tomorrow).
The phone is already unlocked.
1) Borrow my friend's sim with a data plan. and register phone
2) Do not fill in correct APN info upon setup (so I can't be charged data)
3) Put in my sim
4) Spend 10 hours reading these forums and trying to install custom firmware/tinkering with the phone etc.
5) Download APNdroid, run it 24/7, then enjoy my dataless phone while I browse wifi all night downloading cool apps and tweaking my phone.
Sorry this is a bit later but for anyone who is looking for an asnwere to this i found one -
Here is how you turn off data service on your G1:
------------------------------------------------
1. Use Anycut to create a shortcut to "Testing"
2. Click on Testing.
3. Click on Phone Information
4. Hit Menu button
5. Click on More
6. Click on Disable data connection
This turns off all data access. Note that GPRS service switches to "disconnected".
Now you should have a phone that does voice calls, but no data access.
Wi-fi still works which is great.
try txtFeeder.com to avoid data charges
I am not sure what your planning doing with your phone, but you should try txtFeeder.com - a free mobile feed aggregator to avoid data charges. It'll let you keep up with news, weather, or whatever site you normally read, on your mobile, without paying data charges. it works really well.

Data sessions - how to keep them open

Hi,
I don't have a data plan and I pay by data sessions. Each session is up to 100kb but when I look at my bill I get loads of sessions with just a few bytes even within the short time of a minute. I assume the G1 opens a session and closes it when no data is transferred to safe power. The network then interprets this as a new connection and doesn't "fil up" the last 100kb session. This sucks as I waste quite a bit of money and I'm currently looking for a way to avoid this. Apparently running a messenger in the background doesn't do the trick. Any other suggestions?
Certian apps and widget as well as the market run in the backround and use data. Go to settings then data synchronization and un check the 1st box that says backround data that might help a bit
Thanks, I didn't mention one thing: I usually deactivate my data connection (APNdroid) when I don't need it.But when I do I get this odd behaviour for example when I'm just browsing the web.(other stuff in the background deactivated)
smh

cut that out. thats no way to talk to a fellow xda member. u might wanna edit that b4 a mod sees that becuase you could get banned for that.
Uninstall all apps and don't synchronize data. That would be your best bet, but even at that I think it is going to still have several short data sessions. You could also disable data via apn's and only enable them when you are using the phone for data.
I would highly suggest getting a data plan however. My last pda phone I didn't have a data plan and only used wifi. It was such a hassle and I would have been better off with just a basic phone than spending so much time to avoid data charges.
@razzledazle, ... it wasn't very helpful. Anyway I'm not in the US so I wouldn't get this offer anyway.
The problem I'm having is that even though I only activate the data connection when I use it, the sessions are very short and I still end up paying much more than I should. I'd like to find a way to keep the session alive till I deactivate 3g again.
Push
Still didn't find a solution myself. On a nokia, keeping the browser open does the job and keeps the session alive... but on the G1 it doesn't.
Running all your data through a VPN should do it, that way you are using a single connection that remains open.
Download droid wall from this forum and use the whitelist mode it might help you out a bit as only things you want will open a connection

Vibrant and NO data plan but 3G/E signal?

How did she get a plan without data? Its a requirement for the android devices.
I'm sure tmobile will automatically add it.
Yes they will charge. Either 30 bucks a month for per meg. I had someone that tried to do this with Verizon and he got a bill for 300 bucks.
You can turn sync off which will prevent it from going online to get info. (sometimes)
Those 3G/E are normal even if you dont have data plan
Disable with "APNdroid" from the market. After you disable 3G/Edge/Gprs data connection make sure you reboot so it actually disables it...you will no longer see 3G/E BTW Expect even better battery life after doing so.

Not sure what you will get charged but a data plan is NOT required on this phone. On other android devices it has been but for some reason this one can be used as a "dumb" phone. Store employees may tell you otherwise so they can get the commission.

I've seen people INSIST up and down that you can't run smartphones without a data plan or the carrier will add them. They told me the same thing about AT&T and guess what? My wife runs her iphone 2g without one (edge disabled) and nary a problem.

thats not true. its not required to have a data plan with an android phone. I talked to a tmobile rep and he said if you buy the android from them by either upgrading or starting a service then you do. but if you bring a tmobile android to them to start up service you dont have to have a data plan. although its really pointless to have an android phone without a data plan.

you dont need to download any apps. just go to mobile network, select APN setting and change the epc.tmobile.com to some arbitrary characters like "24532lk34j23l45ju204213" and hit the "menu" button and save. then turn off background sync at all time (unless you turn on wifi for android market donwload apps and gmail or apps that requires internet) and then reboot the phone.
the phone will will still shows 3G/E but u wont be able to get on internet as the APN setting has changed. T-mobile wont charge you data plan for this even though they got the IMEI detected. Ciao!

Yea remove epc.tmobile.com and for some reason you want it back but you forgot what it was so you go searching online because your forgot to write it down...you get the point
You really think that's easier than just getting APNdroid click to disable, click to enable. And why would he want to and disable background sync im sure he will use wifi.
BTW when you use your "method" and still see 3G/E your phone might not be able to connect to tmobile but it is still searching for those signals ultimately wasting battery
I don't have a data plan and I haven't disabled the APN settings. Whenever I go onto the browser without WiFi it shows me a T-Mobile page that just says that I need a data plan use the internet. It has never charged me. But I do have an unlimited text message plan and I can send picture messages just fine. Just an FYI.
I have used several android phones with out a data plan. We have a family plan, and so all I needed to do was use the sim card for a line that did not have a plan. It actually works well, and were I not waiting for the ota for froyo, I would be tempted to drop my data plan and I use my phone extensively.
If I recall correctly, the only applications that I could not use when out and about were the browser based apps. Initially, the thought of not being able to user google maps would have been enough of a reason not to drop the data plan, but with my trip to canada, that was cured with a $20 download of Co pilot. I am generally using my phone where I have wifi access. Nonetheless, I still was able to get email updates with out a data plan.
In essence, with out a data plan you can still access email, messaging, and use many if not most of your downloaded applications. If you need constant access to FB, you tube, twitter and the likes, you will not easily be able to drop you data line.
Note that I was able to get my wife's phone upgraded to a my touch slide on t-mobile and was not required to add a data plan. I did, but it was weeks after I already had it up and running which was possible because it provided an option to configure wifi before having to have the google account configured (unlike the G1).
Just fyi those those interested.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
T-Mobile will NEVER add a data plan to your line, especially without your knowledge.
I've been using a smartphone with my plan without data for years now.

Why android market charge me 1 cent every time

Hi guys,
Why every time when I try to open android market, there is a notification says this transaction costs me 1 cent?
Now I can only open android market in airplane mode. Do you know how to solve this problem?
WOw that is pretty interesting.
Two things
1. I would email google about it
2. Try to delete the market cache from menu - appliction - manage applications.
Is it something related to your data plan
or it does charge when you connected to wifi too?
This phone has an issue. Even though u select not to use mobile data, it will still try to use it with some apps, market is one of them. Next time u open market, look at the status bar, u'll notice H for a brief moment, that's why u get charged, it's not google, it the phone itself. I called dell and talked to them about this, they though the model I got was.faulty, so they sent me a new one, but the new one acts the same way. I also called at&t and have them fully remove data of my phone, but they said they can't do it. the only sollution I thought of, is to use market through your browser.
or try some antivirus program.
I also see this issue, every time I open android market app - it downloads something (can see the H in notification are for a brief moment). But with amazon market app, it doesn't do this. Seems like AT&T is the problem here; maybe their policies are ok to steal 1 cent from non-data plan users.
I had G2X for a few days and this was not happening on that phone and I used the same sim card. It's not a virus, it happens even after factory reset.
This is nothing, try to factory reset your phone and see how much you get charged at initial android set up. You will lose at least a $1 by skipping set up steps in a hurry just to get to options and disable data. wtf is the phone downloading when you aren't even hooked up to your google account? It just choses to use data for no reason...
I reported this before
I reported this before. I even wrote to the FCC and AT&T looked at it and said in their report it was not them, It has to be Google and the Market Software.
If 3G data is off they shouldn't be turning it on and running up your data cost.
That's my complaint. I have a 2Gig plan. and have only used 200Meg at the most during the a month. It's the principal of the issue. You have Data disabled, and it turns it on. By the way, It adds 1K to data each time you access the market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970826
I turn off the data network when I'm not using it and have never had it turn itself on. When you use the market there will always be some data traffic back and forth as it loads the 'specials' etc. and even when you don't use it there will be activity as the device checks for application updates and emails.
As for the 1 cent charges, do they actually appear on your bank account?
Doesn't your phone need internet access to go on the market? Like to Download what Apps are on the market? Makes sense really
Did they reply your complaint? Were you complaining to ATT or Google?
I think I should send a complaint about this issue too.

I don't use mobile network at all, in the settings, the mobile network for att is not activated. I use wifi all the time.
However, sometimes when I open android market, the mobile network is enabled automatically (yes, I can see an "H" icon in the notifacation bar). I think there is a bug with the android market.
BTW, I'm a prepaid plan user, att did charge 1 cent every time.

I guess android market enables the mobile network automatically, but only for a very short time when it starts up, after that, it starts to use wifi.
This probably is a bug of android market, I will report this to Google. Do you guys know how to report bugs to Google?

Oh I get what you mean, that does suck. Especially when you have it in airplane mode, thought that stopped everything!
This isn't just the market app, I had this happen to me in Skype, so I uninstalled it. I also tried Amazon market yesterday, mobile network is never in use with them, so it's a good idea to use that instead.
I think it's Dell, because like I said before, I had Optimus 2X for a few days and market doesn't do this on that phone. I also talked to At&t several times, they refuse to turn off data access
shouldn't charge just to look at the Apps.....something not right there. I persoannly have not seen this yet.
More Info about Report
I filed a complaint to the FCC naming AT&T, and Google. Only AT&T responded to the complaint. When Filing the complaint online you are limited as the how much you can type so I had to shorten it. Only AT&T contacted me, and stated that it was not them. As I kept checking this, It has to be the Market Place, and Google Software issue. If you have Mobile Data turned off, and operate only on WiFi, Mobile Data is activated when connecting to Market Place, and 1K of data is transmitted and it is added to your data usage.see below.

FCC Complaint
My complaint is that my phone is using data when data is turned off.
Phone = Dell Streak 5
Application = Google Market Place
Carrier = AT&T Mobile
The phone, has an option to turn off 3G data connection so that you won’t be charged data when connected to WiFi. I use the phone most of the time when home on a WiFi network expecting not to incur data usage and the charges associated with using a 3G data connection.
After updating my phone to the latest software on the 23, February, 2011, and installing a program called 3G Watchdog to track 3G data usage, my data use was increasing. I checked this over the next 2 hours and it went from 7 KB to 23 KB of data use. After checking the phone several times making sure the data connection was still turned off, I observed that when using WiFi only that accessing the Google Market Place (an application to download software that came with the phone) that it was turning on the 3G data connection even though it was turned off. I had to go into the settings of the phone and turn the setting on then off to cancel the 3G data connection. Note: after a minuite of so it will shut off by itself.
My complaint is that there is no place that states that Google Market Place will turn on and use 3G data connection when you have it turned off. Dell just released the software update for the phone. After talking to Dell Support tonight for about an hour. They said it just does that.
If you turn off 3G data, so it cannot be used:
Why is Google Market Place turning it on and using the 3G data connection?
Why is Google Market Place or the Dell software update allowing access to your 3G data connection, turning it on and using your data without your authorization when you have your 3G data connection disabled and turned off in the phone settings.
When accessing Google Market Place 3G data connection charges are being incurred.
This unauthorized 3G data use could create an over limit of your data account and cause an increase of your billing for data use of almost double on your data account.
Resolution:
I would like to see the phone or software work as you would expect it to.
1: If I turn off the 3G data connection it would stay off and not be used until it was turned back on.
2: A stop of automatic 3G data usage with out authorization when disabled and turned off.
3: A rewrite of the Dell software update and/or Google Market Place software application or any other software for the Android operating system to not turn on and use a 3G data connection when you have turned off or disabled it.
if you go to accounts& sync setting there is a option call Background data uncheck it, thenyou won't see that happing.
Wouldn't everyone with a streak get the same problem if it was Google that was to blame? Mine stays on wifi, when I load the market app. Maybe its certain streaks or carrier problem.
