device as mass storage? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

i hate the fact that i have to install activesync on each pc to be able to see it the device on explorer to transfer files.
why is it that windows can't reconize the device as a mass storage device without installing activestink?
when i was on nextel i was able to switch the phone to "mass storage" rather than "sync" and it would show up as a drive on windows explorer by just plugging it in via usb.
i carry a lot of files on my phone which i use for work and it's a hassle to remove the storage card all the time.. i rather not deal with bluetooth and i also don't want to carry a separate mass storage device.
is it a driver issue or is this another evil MS design in which a wm phone only show in explorer if activesync is installed?

WM5torage - free, but doesn't work on all phones
CardExport - commercial, but wider device support

I'm not sure about this. I just change the USB Mode of my phone to Mass Storage Mode (Settings -> Connections -> USB To PC) and it acts as a card reader (only information from my memory card is available)/USB Drive. It works with a library computer which I believe does not have Active Sync.
I run WM6 on Atom Life.

I tried WMStorage on my phone (SMT5800, running WM6). It caused my phone to spontaneously perform a hard reset. Fortunately, I had a recent backup that I could restore from.

why did you try wm5torage as you have wm6 that support this feature.
Settings -> Connections -> USB and set USB device : USB disk
and mark the topic as SOLVED

Some manufacturers add the feature to their ROMs, but it is not native to WM6. For devices that don't have it built in, you can use either of the programs I linked to above. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions.

PocketPC as a USB Mass Storage Device

Hey All,
I know you can store files etc on the PocketPC and its storage cards through activesync, but every time you copy from/to it goes through the active sync tranfser window etc. Also, you cant just double click a file on the pocket pc, if you do it just brings up the files properties (you have to copy it locally to open it).
Is there a way to make the pocket pc act like a storage device, such as a usb hard disk or pen drive, where you dont need activesync, you can just double click files to open them etc.
Cheers,
Jez.
yes
but it demand that the pda support usb host
non of the xda series support it
some of the toshiba pda's and the acer pda i just got the other day
support it
there are some CF cards which have usb host options
but it would require the xda to haev the backpack to use CF cards
and not sure if it would be compatible

Anybody Got some info? Pm me if you can Help
You can use nuemassstorage from Freewarepocketpc.net

Universal to be recognized as a USB Mass Storage in Windows

Read this article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wceintro5/html/wce50conWhatsNew.asp
It confirms that WM5 has the USB Mass Storage driver built in, means without any additional software, we can use the storage card in WM5 device just like a USB pen drive/external HDD. This is very useful to connect the device in PCs without ActiveSync installed.
Does anybody know how to make the Universal to be recognized as a USB Mass Storage in Windows OS?
The DLL usbmsfn.dll is missing from the Exec's ROM - without that you'll not have much joy me thinks.
Hopefully much faster to
With no wifi support in activesync this may be much faster.
I find it a real pain transfering video files to my mda pro over activesync so slow
Can it be ripped from the device emulator or someone else's WM5 ROM?
RE
Does the Universal requires hardware-ready for USB hosting besides the necessary drivers?
No, pls don't be confused with USB host capability.
This is not related to that. The USB Mass Storage function is basically the capability to emulate the Universal so that when its plugged to a USB port of a PC, the PC will recognize the Universal as if its an external harddrive/USB pen drive/card reader.
If you use an external harddrive/USB pen drive/card reader to transport files you should be familiar with this. The benefit is that you do not need any driver for the drive to be recognize by Windows OS (starting W2k).
I myself, everytime I want to copy big size files like MP3 or movie to my Universal, I will take out the SD Card and insert it to the card reader then copy the files as its slightly faster to do so rather than using the ActiveSync.
The idea is that, with the USB Mass Storage driver that is built into the WM5, we do not need to take out the SD Card and use a card reader anymore. Just plug in the Universal and the PC can access the storage card directly with full speed.
Though this is definetely WM5 feature, but not really sure if this is implemented in Universal specifically. If anybody knows, please share.

Hate to burst bubbles, but the originally referenced article is taking about Windows CE5, not Windows Mobile5. While WM5 is built out of WCE5, it does not support everything that the underlying OS does or can. WCE5 is a base OS that a number of products are based on including WM devices like SmartPhones and PPC, and automotive electronics and even vending machines. At this point I know of no native mass storage capability in a WM5 device. Not to say it can't happen, as Softick provided the capability for WM2003 devices. It's just not that way out of the box.
A laconic mail exchange with Softick told me that they are actually working on their cardexport product for full WM5 compatibility. No release date, no progress for now. Maybe if somebody want's to ask more?

Use an SD card reader, or try transferring over a wifi network using a network shared folder using resco explorer.
Brilliant, trust me!

Tested Working on Universal.
WOW. This is good news!
after installing it, the device hangs. I unplugged it and reset it manually. And it works. Really cool! I noticed the speed is not as fast compared to a card reader. Anyway, I'm happy that now I do not need to carry around additional thing, SD card reader, just to transport files.

Sweet Software....
I install it (2.10), it keeps staying at the display when it is loading the bar and then it says that it cannot load it self...
Afterwards it uninstalls automatically...
I have Qtek ROM...
I've installed it and it works great on my Qtek 9000 (Universal). I only turn on de mass storage when i really need it, but then it works great to tranfer files from and tot every PC (no ActiveSync install needed).
I am trying to install V2.10 on my Universal and get the following:
On installation an error:
"ActivateDeviceEx" and "Cannot Load Drivers\BuiltIn\CE2. Code 2"
The install then says "Cannot Start Card Export" and "Card Export Installation Failed" and uninstalls itself.
Did a registry search and cant find any reference to that in the regisrty.
Anyone with any ideas or if they have that in their reg can they post the details!
Cheers!

[Question] Access PDA through network drive ?

Hello,
I'm looking for an easy and convenient way to access my HTC Trinity through a mapped network drive on my XP SP2 PC. The device is connected to a PC through ActiveSync.
I know there are 3rd-party solutions like Resco or the WinCE Device plugin for Total Commander (which I use already), but my intent is to be able to access the device's memory -- specifically, the storage card -- through a simple mapped network drive or equivalent.
The purpose is to allow a scheduled simple .bat script to download and upload specific files from/to the device's storage card.
I hope somebody can help
Thanks a million in advance,
--Clandestino
I second this request. Its a pain having to stick the SD card into a card reader and then into a USB port to gain access to the files via a PC, and to get a rate of file transfer that is more acceptable than the transfer speed of Active Sync (slow death).
Being able to access the storage card directly off the PPC via a PC would be great and save the hassle of having to pysically take the card out, as outlined above.
Hope this idea comes to life.

Take a look over here!
With this tool you can use your PPC as a cardreader.
Thanks -- I'm already using WM5Storage, but for various reasons it doesn't fit exactly what I'm looking for. Furthermore, it sometimes hangs the PDA and I have to soft-reset it, so until it becomes more stable, I wouldn't rely on that method.

syncing diamond connected as hard drive?

Hi all,
is there a (free) sync tool to use with a diamond connected as hard drive without ActiveSync?
Great would be if the program does a diff/merge on the .txt- or .docx-files etc. and not just decide by changedate.

A good one which i've used for a while, is "Beyond Compare". I'm afraid it's not free, but it can be found elsewhere. Personally I think it's worth the charge, as I use it for all kinds of things. It does date, content, binary, CRC and many other comparison techniques to detect changes in files, and shows yu a side by side vew of a directory tree.
Um, doesn't your diamond ask you if you want to sync or use the internal storage as secondary drive ?
It's ok but you don't have access to the phone's ram or rom.

I believe WinMerge does the job
it already does
Try GoodSync
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for the replies.
The tools look promising. I will test them the next days.
@dan168: Are you sure WinMerge has syncing capabilities?
You could use synctoy - its free from microsoft and does folder syncing.

Thanks for the hint. In general it seems to be useful. Do you know a way to use it not so much as an application but as a deamon syncing automatically.
As far as I know it relies on a specific Folder - in this case the drive letter. Is there a way to assign a specific letter to the diamond that does not change after reconnecting?
Armin
SyncToy seems to do the work - without merging.
Thanks to spone1 and the tutorial on about.com the diamond now is always drive letter "P:".
For syncing I start a batch file including this:
Code:
"C:\Program Files\SyncToy 2.0\SyncToyCmd" -R
PAUSE
Last thing is, that I have to disconnect the pda manually by clicking the icon in the task bar. Does anyone know a command line command?
That tool should do it, but I rather would use Vista directly.
Armin
1st of all the internal default (if you choose to sync as disk storage), is you will only be able to see and read and write to the main memory and the internal storage is off limits.
the rest of the solution offered are you need some sort of software to sync the folders from PC to Phone (vice versa)
what the thread starter wans (and what i wan also) is to turn this phone into a thumbdrive / portable flashdisk, with out activesync or any software and default as that when i pluck into any PC.
anyone has any solution to this?

How can I allow Windows programs to access the phone?

I don't just mean Windows Explorer. I mean other programs.
I have 6.0.1 MagMa ROM. Set to MTP and turned on USB debugging. Windows Explorer can read the device contents, but since the phone appears as an actual phone in Explorer and not just a separate drive, I can't get other programs to recognize the phone's existence. Even Android-specific Windows programs don't recognize it. A couple programs seem to know there's a phone connected but tell me to turn on USB debugging even though it's on already.
How can I make the phone appear as just a separate drive or change settings in Android/Windows to make the phone searchable in Windows programs?
