Device ID tomtom 6 - P3600 General

How can I find this information in my htc?
Regards,
MM.

Start TomTom
Click on the bottom left containing the time and GPS signal strength
Click on the wee grey box with the version number
TomTom Serial will be displayed towards the bottom.
Remember that although it is shown as two groups of 5 it is actually a 10 character string needed for map activation.

Can this device number be kept somehow following the flashing of a new ROM? Otherwise, all Tomtom purchased downloads become invalid! There are ROMS out there I want to try but if the device code HAS to change each time, it's not an option!

this depends on the ROMs. I found through painful experience that it can change and therefore you lose subscriptions (well TomTom support are so useless they will not reassign a new device ID without a letter from HTC explaining the problem).
In the end I went BACK to a ROM which gave the original registered TomTom device ID.

So, let me get this right...
If you re-flash your phone with the same ROM, you will get your original device number back? Worth knowing.
However, as far as testing ROMS goes and bothering to read what's new out there in the threads, if you have tomtom downloads, forget it?
And all these people out there changing backwards and forwards to different ROMS, they don't download tomtom speed camera warnings or paid for voices?

God.... my device id on Tomtom changed over night! How can this be???
Now my speed cameras and paid for voice are null and void again!
I think I'll give up buying them!!!
(Watch this space... I'll have a ticket for speeding within a month)

Easy fixed.....don't speed.
I am not sure about the UK but in Australia you don't need to use Tomtom's own POI's (including speed cameras). there are plenty of sites where you can get them and al the voices as well......free.
The biggest problem you will have is your map will not work if your device ID has changed as the activation code is linked to the device ID.

Hi Andy.
Easy for you to say! When I was in Australia for a year I saw none of the little roads with ridiculously low speed limits that we have. Empty road, 11pm at night, 30mph speed restriction. Camera catches you at 36 and BAM! 200 bucks fine and 3 points on your licence. I know, I'm sounding like a whining Pom.
Funny thing about my Tomtom, the maps work regardless of the change in device code. maybe it's because they all came on the memory card. The only thing that goes is Tomtom plus services, like downloaded stuff and Traffic.
I guess I'll have to find freeware. I've paid Tomtom twice! But they're forcing me to look elsewhere due to an inability to link their software in a way that doesn't fail if I change the ROM. Their loss.

noob q - need uk maps/directions app but i have no gps

I have a 512mb card, i would like to install an app that will allow me to plan journey (only need uk maps) and give me on screen directions. Initially gps navigation is not necessary but i would like the option to incorporate this possibly at a later stage....
If possible i'd like to keep it as cheap as possible (who wouldnt?), and i dont really feel like spending £££ on a tom tom setup for pda because the way i see it i might as well get a tom tom 300....
Try Navizon, it's navigation using AP's & cell-towers. I didn't got it working, need to spend some time for it. It's free (or trial can't remember exactly) but needs gprs/AP to the web.
M
If you don't need GPS, have you got AutoRoute or MapPoint on your PC? If you have you can install Pocket Streets which is a free add in with both pieces of software. Just a thought!
Check out a tomtom 3. now that version 5 is out, version 3 is cheap and can be used to plan a route (just tell it where to start & finish), then at any point a gps mouse will give you full satnav for not much outlay. However if you just want printed instructions of A->B then google for routeplanner, AA & RAC both have one (sure there are many many others too). Input your start & end locations and then print the map & directions off.

It wont be supported, but it may run fine. if you dont mind a possible hard reset aquire a copy & try it, if it works ok great, if not ignore me for forgetting it was designed to WM2003
You could try Mapopolis http://www.mapopolis.com

I am very, very sure that installing TT3 on a WM5 device is not something that is going to work. Even 5 needs an update for WM5 compatibility.
there's always...
there's always...
www.earthcomber.com
free mapping software
wm5 no prob
accurate too
next step for me is to setup www.navizon.com to provide a "faux" GPS signal to it!!!
Just stumbled upon Earthcomber independent of this thread--wow this is a cool program! Anyone had issues with it? I've already got it installed and running on my Wizard, but looking to avoid issues others have already found. Thanks...

CellTracker Alternative

I don't know where else to post this....I found this while looking for an alternative to the SPV Developers CellTracker app. It's an app called NiceTrack...the screenshots tell the rest of the story:
http://www.nicecuppa.com/nicetrack.asp
Background info: http://www.ascendingangels.com/nicecuppa.com/nicetrack.asp?story=1
Screenshots: http://www.ascendingangels.com/nicecuppa.com/nicetrack.asp?story=2
Download: http://www.ascendingangels.com/nicecuppa.com/nicetrack.asp?story=3 (Version 1.2)
The source code for that app can also be downloaded from the Background Info link.
The SPV Developers CellTracker app (Beta version only, hasn't been updated since December) for PocketPCs is located at the way bottom of the page:
http://www.thelogster.34sp.com/celltracker/
NiceTrack updates the tower changes in real-time whereas CellTracker does not. NiceTrack also shows the dbm signal strength on a cool chart and it also includes a logging function that allows you to rename the cells your phone has connected to while the app is active.
Signal strength chart: http://www.ascendingangels.com/nicecuppa.com/images/nicetrack/main-page.gif
Here are a couple hints based on my experience so far:
1) In order to fully save the renamed/logged cell sites, you must first tap Save next to where you renamed the cell site. Then you must also tap Options/Menu --> Save (extreme lower left) to save all changes since the app was launched.
2) Use Menu --> Exit to completely close the app.
I have tested this for use on my MDA II w/Windows Mobile 2003. I don't know if the app is compatible with WM5 PPCs or regular Windows Mobile smartphones.
Enjoy
Thanks for posting.
This software has been discussed before, and it is great:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=3347&highlight=nicetrack
However, I believe people are having difficulty converting it to WM5 (when I last checked). But great stuff either way.

Hi there,
Sharpstuff (NiceTrack author) here..
I've just bought a T-Mobile MDA Vario and have managed to get it working on that ( WM2005 )
The problem was that in the older phones the GSM modem was on COM2 and on my Vario it's now COM9. I've made the Com port configurable now, but it's still not 100%.
You can download it from my site www.nicecuppa.net
Let me know how y'all get on.
Cheers

Sharpstuff, you have an excellent app here. I had to search for a bit to find it but in the end, I'm quite glad to have it . I also like the pun you have for your site...it's quite distinctive since even as a German-American, I know when someone says "cuppa", they normally mean the cup of tea .
Keep up the good work and thanks for taking the time to develop such a great and invaluable app .
oooh.. *bookmark*
Do you have a regular Donate button somewhere? I see the shop, but I'd rather just get X amount straight to you, and not have to be awoken by some crazy delivery guy at 8am for a mug
Thanks for the kind thought...
But, I enjoy doing this stuff, so just click my google ads and I'm happy!
;-)
Got this to work on my 8125, almost... Clicking on 'add' under events causes it to crash with the following error:
NiceTrack.exe
NullReferenceException
Application::Run+0xf
MainForm::Main+0xa
....bummer - so close!
You need to select an event type eg. "Flash backlight" then click "add"..
Needs some validation there.. Plus, the events side of things isn't very useful at the moment, I need to implement some more event types.
Cheers
I installed it on my qtek9100 but it doesn't find a GSM-modem at all.
Also a Qtek9100, EN - found it on COM9 just fine
What would be really neat would be an event "Show Picture". That way it would be easy to make a make-shift map tracking thing. Simply grab a picture of the map off the internet, plunge a big dot on the map where you got the cell, save as image, and have that image displayed when entering that cell %) GIF files on the storage card, shouldn't take up too much space
Alternatively a full-fledged mapping thing could be developed, but that's a lot more work *nod*
@sharpstuff hey I installed it on my XDA EXEC, but when it scans for com and reaches com9 it just freezes...any ideas?

So is Release 1.3b a partial fix for WM5 users? I installed it on my MDA II and it detects my modem on COM2 without any problems. Both 1.2 and 1.3 seem to work on WM2003 PPCs.

TIA
Yep, it's an intermediate release. Basically, it reminds the user on startup to set the Com port in settings
I'm working on v1.4 at present, this has more error checking on the GSM code, and multi-threaded com port detection so the whole app doesn't hang
For what it's worth - it seems to randomly lock up on me - requires an 'end task'. Sometimes when this happens, and I try to fire it back up again, I just get an empty message box dialog; no title, just the close button.

I Have a GPS Reciever, Need software

Hi,
I have a GPS reciever (bluetooth) an i have been looking everywhere for GPS software that wont cost me anything or i wont need to remortgage my house anyway.
Prefer the nothing part though!!! so anyone have ideas of where to find any?
Dave
Hi Dave,
Without meaning to be flippant, that really depends on what you want to do?
Presumably if you are loooking for free or cheap software, the likes of TomTom and iGo are out of the question? These are two of the better known route planning packages - I.e. get me from A to B - but cost. I'm not aware of any free or cheap alternatives.
If you want to know where you are - e.g. just show your position on a map, Windows Live Search beta or Navizon both do this for free (you'll need an inclusive data plan though as both download maps).
There are also moving map programs (e.g. Fugawi or Oziexplorer), although most require some form of raster map (£££) and are not free themselves.
If you find a good, free (or cheap) moving map package, please let me know!

Doesn't exists a free lunch... They wan't something very valuable, your personal data and they want to sell some part of your time to companies. How?
Is easy. Do you know in economical terms the meaning of RESOURCE? Is something that other people want, they would like to pay to have. The water IS a resource and the value and the price are related to the amount available and the request for this resource. But we have a LOT of water here, so the price is low.
SALT was a resource, then they have discovered new technologies to preserve meat and to obtain salt, but we still have SALARY (cames from SALT, SALE in italian) and SALARIA road in Italy...
The diamonds are something more requested and easy to understand, but try to think to something different: health or... your time! Having part of your time means to sell something to you and grabbing some of your money. All the money you earn is something to conquer.
So as an example you have TV movie for "free" (it seems they are free, you will pay later, in the supermarket )
You have it for free but they shared your full name, Lucid (AKA Mike H......... ?)
I prefer to give 100 Euros to Route 66, save connection time and battery and keep my personal data. Remember latins? Do you now what trojan horse is? (the FIRST one!) Troians found a wonderful giant horse and they want to bring inside the city (Troy) Only one said: TIMEO DANAOS ET DONA FERENTES , I am afraid of greeks, even when they bring gifts! I am afraid of companies EXPECIALLY when they brings gifts! we all knows the Troy story...
Windows Live Search
Try http://wls.live.com
Download the Pocket PC version
You have to have a data account to download the maps in real time. It does not point you in the direction you are headed. In other words the screen is always pointing north. However, it is fun to see the GPS in action. You must create a Com Port to the BT receiver and configure the options in the program to use the BT receiver. Not a full featured driving GPS solution but a good mapping solution.
So if one has a bluetooth GPS receiver and wants to pay for navigation software ...which one would be the best for accuracy and simplicity....regardless of cost?
that's a bit like saying what is the best car - it's a bit of a subjective issue. there are other threads that cover this

I tested Pocket street, Tom Tom 6 and Route 66. Then I had a Garmin eMap,now a Quest an tested an eTreck and a Nuvi.
TT6, R66,Nuvi are for city nav (are useless off road), simulated 3d nav. Nuvi has a great screen, TT6 and R66 are more or less the same, chose the one most updated from users for your area (I mean Point of Interest, POI, speed traps,...)
Quest iis great also on the sea and offroad, a great trackback function, really water proof, 20 ours of continuous functioning. Pocket street doesn't have routing capability, you just have gps info and the point on the map.
Quest (450 euro)if you have money, MS pocket street if you havent (25 euro) 200 (GPS+Sw+1gb SD) for TT6 and R66. If yuo like sailing, flying or trekking... Garnin!
I've used many GPS's thur the last few years and hove found that the Garmin products are all at the top of the list.
I just loaded Garmin Que on my 8525 and works great. I'm very use to the interface as it is very close to all the stand alone Garmin GPS I've used.
Garmin Que only works with a Garmin GPS receviver.

TomTom are checking this forum for illegal distribution of their software.
The fact that an aberrant alpha particle managed to penetrate the atmosphere and cause your map disk irrepairable damage is unfortunate.
Consider speaking to TomTom for a replacement.
Otherwise, search the board for TomTom and see what I've had to say about getting hold of non-retail copies of it.

I tried the Delorme product and TomTom 6 (I DID purchase them). I think Tom Tom 6 is just about as good as the one built into my car.
Come on folks, MOST of the software that runs on a pocketPC is not that expensive! Don't cause this place to shut down because you are too tight to lay out a few dollars.
If you can afford a PocketPC phone, you can probably afford to purchase the software that you need/want.

Trapster - report speed trap, red light camera, POLICE TRAP/presence in real time

Hi guys.
I saw this program on the news a minute ago and the concept is really cool. With the builtin GPS or WiFi (how can WiFi be accurate!!!!), a user presses an auto/self configured button to report each of the 4 kinds of trap. When a user is at the vicinity of a trap, a shrill voice (builtin/self recorded) will announce the type of trap to the user. The web site is at http://www.trapster.com. Every body must have thought of this concept before (me included) but thank Jebus finally some body did it!!!
I just sent my X7500 back to get the MicroDrive fixed so don't have anything to test it with. Would some body with an Athena please try this program and report any problems using it on this particular device?
It's still in beta and free right now. However, if it becomes a subscription service, I wouldn'd mind paying for it. Provided that the fee is reasonable like the $20/year subscription fee of www.schedulesdirect.org If it is more than $20/year, I will have second thoughts.
How much would you pay for it?

Woah, who got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?...
In the US it's a good idea - very sketchy in the UK at the moment and not as good as the PocketGPS ones or those available in Cameraware. But then they are free! Again, critical mass needs to be reached - in the US with very little alternative, it might be, in the UK I'm not so sure.
Just my 2d's worth.
I'm going to DL it and test it for ya bud. Thanks for the heads up with this s/w. And as "Con" said they're in the UK so they have other options we don't. I'll give feedbacks later on after I test it.

Well after reading the how to on the website today, you have to actually dl it to the pc first and install it through active sync. I wasn't able to do it from work plus I didn't have my data cable with me in the office. I'll get around to it tonight tho and let you know how it goes.
i downloaded it to my pc, active syncd it, my phone screen popped up w/ a "yes" or "no". clicked yes. save to storage card. failed twice then said unsuccessful.

What a big disappointment!!! The concept is great but the Windows Mobile version of this program is still in *JUNK* status. It lacks many of most basic functions such as GPS configuration (port, baud, etc...) It installed alright on my Athena. However, when I ran it, it kept telling me "Can't get GPS location (87)..." while all of my other GPS apps (Google Maps, Live Search, CoPilot Live) that were running at the same time had no GPS problem at all. I'll wait for the next version before using it.
Edited: The GPS problem is most likely due to AP4...
I have downgraded my athena to ap3 and the gps problem is fixed. so the previous gps problem is because of ap4. with the athena, there's no good way to report redlight, etc... by key press as the athena's key assignment took precedent. However, the announcement is excellent though the volume is pretty low. I will have to re-record the alert messages.
Sorry for late chime - in

We've now added the capability to connect to GPS directly via the COM port, in addition to the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) method which is supposed to handle all that automatically. The problem with the direct COM port method is that the app (Google Maps, Live Search, CoPilot Live, and Trapster(R)) then "hogs" the GPS. This sort of sharing is what the GPSID was supposed to fix, but unfortunately in an attempt to block all apps that are not paid (like TeleNav etc.) carriers have gimped the config screens etc. I've seen COM port "splitter" programs but have not tested them personally.
What a big disappointment!!!

I think this fixes your main objection. Please give it another look and let us know what you think.
We also added (some other stuff relevant to Windows):
- a mobile site. Just go to trapster.com/m and you can sign up, sign in, and download right there.
- "Ack" feature for Windows Mobile and "CarPC" (which means just run on your laptop) If you are a regular Trapster user in any US metro area (where trap density is high) you will definitely appreciate the "Ack" feature. No more ears ringing "police often hide here"... you just hit Ack (or mapped voice command) and it mutes until you encounter a new trap.
- support for WiFi location mode in Vista.
Hey trapster,
Thank you for such a cool app. Once I get used to it, it's pretty cool to use. I used it in July while I was visiting Florida and it did saved me from being pulled over while driving through the Alligator Alley. I'm using it every day now. Pretty cool.
For us Athena users, while the key mapping is not working well, I found that we can put the trapster folder on Start menu and have it opened in the background with all command icons showing. I'm using it with CoPilot. When I see an incident I need to report, I simply click on the [OK] button to minimize CoPilot and click on the appropriate icon to report the incident. Then I click on CoPilot again to open it up over the trapster menu. It's workable. Wish Athena has more buttons or Trapster is integrated with Microsoft Voice Command. It would be sooo cool to click a button to activate Microsoft Voice Command and say "Report Live Police" and have everything else done for us.

Hi sumtingwong, thanks for the kind words and glad Trapster saved you a ticket in Alligator Alley (of course the way the enforcement system works, that just means someone else got pulled over instead, but...).
Stephen Skarlatos of Pocket Now wrote about Trapster being integrated with Microsoft Voice Command here:
http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1051&p=1
and in there says:
I use Microsoft Voice Command to report traps. As example to report a live police activity, I initiate Voice Command and say "start report live police", which initiate the trapster report livepolice function.

Navigator Maps - No Postcode entry?

I can't figure a way of using UK postcodes to enter a destination? Am I missing something? Or is the software basically useless?
Anyone with any pointers on how to do this? Please just tell me I am being dim. Otherwise I will stick with Copilot.
Sorry about the bump, but this is ridiculous!
Looking for PE22 0TU for example
OK, so if you enter a postcode (PE22 0TU) it won't find it. You then have to enter a partial postcode with no spacing (PE220), it won't find it.
But if you then press the blank result in the screen, not the search field, the bit that has an exclamation point followed by "Search for xxxx" it then comes up wiht a list of postcodes.
However, it is not the full list of postcodes and there are many it does not know about - PE22 0TU for one.
Absolute rubbish.
I'd like to know how to use it as well, as currently I find it pretty useless finding anything.
Got to agree, it's generally pretty crappy I think.
I've found this too. But Navigator doesnt bother me as much as it google maps though, where again it doesnt find postcodes for some reason. I've already got a tomtom so wont use navigator much, but google maps is (would be) great when i'm out and about in the city on foot.
agreed! atm I have paid ~£50 for the Navigon as it does postcode search and allows for traffic (i wasnt getting traffic thru copilot so i got a refund for it
it would also be nice to use Locations as it does not disappear when you get a phone call!
so far then it looks like i'm not the only one with this problem...at first i just wondered if i was missing how to do it.
I am not a programmer so dont know how easy this would be to implement:
Export the lat/long from Google maps into HTC Locations. This would require a data connection for a couple of minutes (while using Google maps) but would be a nice work around

That is really odd, because I have never had Google Maps not find a post code. Do you have an example?

I have been using Google Maps to navigate via post code and it was worked fine, I have had no trouble using postcode search within google maps, what happens when you try it?
i dont suppose any1 has found a solution to this yet? I've been trying hard but have come to nothing
I have just noticed this myself this morning.
I was really hoping to use the Navigation thing for all my satnav needs but without postcode entry its rubbish.
You can't even search for a street name without first putting in the city where it is.
Glad they give you a 30 day trial of it before needing to purchase.
I'm not having any problem with postcode entry in Navigator? Start navigating, select Set Destination and put the postcode in without spaces. Seems to work fine. I even tried PE22 0TU which was mentioned above and it locates and navigates to it fine.
Are you guys talking about navigation, (the google st nav), or locations/car panel, (the htc sat nav)?
Postcode in the htc one is rubbish and as you say doesnt work. Seems you have to type the address in and it finds it.
Postcode search on the google one works fine for me.
I wont be paying for the htc one after my 30 day trial is up, shame really as its a nice bit of kit but at the moment not very user friendly
Me, I'm just confused by the sheer number of navigation apps on the phone... Navigation, Car Panel, Location, Google Maps, Footprints...
But if you mean the app that is just called Navigator then it finds postcodes for me...
Search is too confusing too... Search Anywhere, Search People, Google Search, Search, Quick Lookup and then there's the search button...
Locations is the app made by HTC and TomTom in partnership. People everywhere are experiencing problems with it's post code search.
I am not sure who dropped the ball on this, HTC or TomTom, but until there is an update enabling this feature the application is virtually useless.
I have contacted HTC customer support and there only answer was, "it is a brand new application, released not so long ago and so, is still full of bugs."
Its not exactly nice to hear that when you have just paid over £400 for a phone.
Anyway... I remember that the TomTom in my car once lost all the post codes after an update. You can download a file from TomTom support and install it to regain post code search.
What I am hoping is that as the locations app does already support post code search, and is based on the TomTom maps/data, that some genius can add this full postcode database to the locations app.
I have no idea how to do this except what I have posted here. I'm hoping that some smart guy/girl will come along and do the hard part now!
I did post links to relevant information but apparently I dont have the right privileges to link external sites
