so i'm upgrading my wizard to an 8525. up til now i've managed to get by without a data plan and only text messages. i'm curious how to get cheap data plans on at&t. i called them and they said $29.95/mo JUST for data.
i've heard people getting unlimited data for like $6 a month using proxies or something? i've had no luck perusing google and forums for info on this so hoping somebody here has some answers. thanks!
The cheapest plan I know you can get for unlimited data is the mediaNet unlimited for 19.99 a month, and thats if you get someone thats nice enought to give you that plan since they aren't supposed to give that plan to people with PDAs
so do you know if the mediaNet unlimited for 19.99 a month with work with a hermes? i used to have that with my 8125, but when i bought the 8525 they changed it...if i change it back to the media net plan...will it work? without getting any strange overages on my bill?

Yeah it will work. I've used for the last several months! The only thing to remember is to ONLY connect through wap.cingular, NOT isp.cingular.
I've noticed no problems with mine! When you get the phone the sales rep always tells you that you have to have the pda plan to use the phone. It is against the rules to use the MediaMax plan but between my phone and my wifes phone spending an extra 100 bucks a month for data started to really suck the wallet dry.
Now we both use Media Max 200 +Unl m2m texts. 24.99 Text and data all you want!
There are some other threads out here about this, search media max and you'll find them.
Now your not supposed to do this but many of us get away with it. Just make sure after every rom flash that youve got your connections setting on wap.cingular and UN: [email protected] and Pw: Cingular1
Reps and Phone people will not let you get this plan, GO ONLINE to att.com/mobile and add it there!
tell the reps that you're switching to a razr or something and ask to be switched to a Media Max option which gives you unlimited data and either 200 messages (19.99) or 1500 messages (29.99). MUCH cheaper than getting a PDA data option.
If your unlocked and have the coverage in your area, I would check T-Mobile data rates. I saved a bunch not going with AT&T.

while that's true, you do miss out on using 3G. especially if the prices you get can be close to the same.
so wat u r sayin is that i will lose my 3g connectivity if i get the media max plan instead of the pda......right now i have the 39.99 plan with unlimited internet and messaging.....so do u guys think it will be worth it to switch to the media max??
from the sounds of it no, you can still use 3g. please connect me if i am wrong... anyone?

You're right. You won't lose 3G by going with the lower priced plan. The person who said that you'd lose 3G was comparing using T-Mobile's lower cost plans to AT&T plans.
Oh, sorry if I confused anyone. I meant you lose 3G if you go to T-Mobile for a lower priced data plan. You absolutely will not lose 3G by getting a Media Max plan. I have the Media Max 1500 plan and I was using the Hermes (now Kaiser) and love it.

screw someone that's nice enough.
Do all of your business with AT&T online if possible. Go to the site and select MediaMax from the list (unlimited internet and like 200 text messages I believe) or the upgraded version that's exactly the same except 1500 text messages (for $29.99 instead of $19.99 a month). Do it online and nobody can say no.
getting the cheaper unimited plan for my 8525
If I go online and order the cheaper 29 dollar plan (or was it 39) anway, can I connect my AT&T 8525 to my laptop (tether) and use it for internet service? The AT&T rep told me this cost $80! My AT&T phone is running factory ROM, mobile 5 (mobile 6 when ever it comes out)

There's some people who still are waiting for the "official" release from AT&T. I guess that it all depends on your comfort level and what you're willing to do to/for your Hermes.
i have a cingular 8125, with T-mobile service, and i pay 6 dollars a month, (i dont think i even have to pay that_ because the proxy settings are from MMS settings, hmm.... but yea its super fast, but for 6 bucks, i cant complain

Here's what I've heard ... you can tether on the $20 plan ... but do so at your own discretion since tethering isn't a part of the plan. There's a lot of discussion about this on hofo. So far no one has been charged that I know of.

How did you set up/ where is the $6 tmobile internet?
I just Called At&T and told them to add [Media Max 200 Bundle for $19.99] to my account. they told me that I have 8525 PDA phone. and I told them that I am going to change the phone to razr. Then they added it for me and I reset the phone after changing the setting to wap.cingular
Now it is working fine. with 3G Connection.
I tried this in the general forum, but got no response.
Does anyone here currently use your 8525 or similar on the ATT GoPhone service?
And if so,
Are there any issues with using it on the unlimited medianet plan for goPhones?
Is it as simple as putting the GoPhone sim in my 8525?
Is it 3G?
Thanks
Bump.
Does anyone have any input on using an 8525 on the prepaid plan?
8525 GoPhone
YES YES AND YES!!
Sign up for GoPhone (Pick Your Plan)
Thats the specific name of the plan
"Pick Your Plan"
The most is 69.99 for 650 minutes , Unlim night/Weekend , Unlim ATT 2 ATT
Then you can add MediaNet for 19.99 for unlim data to access HSDPA/UMTS
I switched to ATT for this (Bye bye TMO get 3g someday)
All in all about 90 bucks + tax for prepaid Hermes(8525) with DATA!!!
This is what im using NOW
addendum
I did a superCID and sim unlock before popping in my GoPhone SIM
I didnt even think to see if it worked before that because I was using
my TMO sim in the 8525
Well, I got my GoPhone in the mail yesterday with unlimited data.
Put the sim in my 8525 and been working great ever since, including 3G.
I got the 39.99 plan and 4.99 texting plan since most of my calls are to other att mobiles. So with tax I am around $70/mo.
I love not having a contract.
AINT IT COOL !!!
I checked my re-up
Im paying $122 after taxes OUCH
650 min, unlim ATT2ATT, Unlim N/W, Unlim DATA, Unlim Text
ok, so how do i get this? i walk into the store and say i need the cheapest gophone you have with unlimited data and pop the sim in my 8525 and walk out of the store whistling?
I signed up online. Choose the Pick Your Plan goPhone, add texting and data plan features, and checkout.
I chose the cheapest phone, a refurb for 9.99. It arrived in 2 days, at which time I took that sim and put in my 8525.
All is good.
Oh, and my I had performed super CID unlock in the past. I am not sure if this is necessary or not since mine is an ATT phone.
Works
Yep, GO Phone works just fine on the 8525, only thing is you still receive that annoying reminder each time you deduct money from your account.. Other then that works like a charm.

Do I HAVE to use that plan, or is it just the best deal in your opinion? Can I use "Pay as You Go" if I want to?
"bump".......
Can I just buy a Go Phone plan w/o data and just use WiFi
I see that I'm probably good to buy a cheap Go Phone w/SIM online, then put that SIM in my 8525. But I only want to do downloads and Internet access via my WiFi not the typical GPRS 3g cell network. So...If I get the current plan w/o any data options am I good to go? I can't see which plan would make any difference as long as I do all my data transfers via WiFi. Can anyone confirm?
Is there anyway I can use my nexus one with a t-mobile sidekick prepaid plan???
You would have to buy the phone at the full price unlocked I believe.
lol do you have a prepaid plan already? if so try it... for testing purposes try using another phone with that prepaid plan...
my gut says no because i think the plan+phone works different than a contract...
My phone is Unlocked and i do have a prepaid sidekick plan, it sees the connection but it give me a basic tmobile wap site when i try to use the web and nothing else works. i guess they're doing some IMEI scanning. supposedly this plan will only work if you have a sidekick
As a short google search would have immediately revealed, T-mo US blocked non-sidekick phones on the sidekick plan some time last Summer (i.e. a decade ago).
I got a great deal for a used Iphone and have been using it for the last week. I had to switch data plans to the iphone only but I love my Tilt 2 and would like to use both phones but inserting my sim card into my Tilt 2 will only let me use voice plan but no data. Any apps out there to fool att in thinking I am using the iphone when I am really using the Tilt 2 so i can get data.
Instead of using the MediaNet connection, change the Tilt2 to use wap.cingular and it will be invisible to the network.

MediaNet IS wap.cingular, it's the APN. AFAIK, ATT only has two, and the other is for Paying Thether users.
Hm, I have a similar concern as well.
Currently I use a tilt 2, but my friend has an old 3GS that he doesn't use. I have a grandfather plan of unlimited data under tilt2, but I plan on playing with both.
Does anyone know if I inserted my Sim into the iphone, if it would mess with my data plan.
Regards,
K

Actually, it isn't. I created a new connection using the wap.cingular as my connection and then set it as my default connection for all usage. Now, when I log onto my AT$T account online I no longer see my phone or am able to access any info about (minutes/data used, etc.). If I switch back to MediaNet the phone miraculously reappears in my account. Something about accessing the network directly using wap.cingular changes how the network sees the user.

It will definitely mess up your plan. ATT will read the IMEI number on the phone as being an iPhone, and they will switch you to the iPhone plan. Furthermore, not completely sure but I think that once they take a grandfathered plan off your account, you can't get it back. So I wouldn't mess with this, and risk losing the unlimited data plan.

Figured so! Thanks! It's not a big deal to me as I have an itouch as well. WifiRouter + Tilt 2 + itouch, I would take over iphone anyday! (takes away all the programs that only require wifi problems away for one!)

I am still using the unlimited $15 data plan I originally got with my RAZR V3. Updated to an Incite and now the TP2 (both bought off Craig's List) and they still haven't changed my data plan to a required Smartphone plan.

There is no such thing as an "itouch". Please call the product by its proper name, the iPod Touch.

Are those phones ATT branded, or not (seems like at least the Incite would be)? ATT seems to be pretty good at picking up the IMEI numbers for their branded phones. But mostly have no way of knowing the IMEI numbers for non-ATT subsidized devices.
I've read of some users on the ATT forum of having their data plan changed the same day, after inserting their SIM into an iPhone that they got from a friend, etc.
Both are AT$T-branded phones. I don't know about iPhones, but they can't change your plan without your permission or without you changing your contract. Changing phones does not qualify as a change of contract since the contract is for service, not phones. Every time I call in for something they try to get me to switch my plan, but I tell them I don't want to lose my grandfathered unlimited plan. They tell me I'm not supposed to be on it with the phone I'm using, but they are powerless to do anything until I either change it myself or upgrade my phone through AT$T and sign a new contract. Not going to happen anytime soon as I'm very happy with my Tilt2.
My wife & I have been with AT&T for near of 7 years now, and we are on the grandfathered unlimited data plans for both my tilt 2 and her *gulp* iphone4. We recently had a house guest, and we activated my wife's old iphone 3g. It too was instantly put on the grandfathered plan, as well as the rest of our family plan.
Adding a line does not "qualify" with AT&T as a contractual change UNLESS you buy a new phone. If your recycling an older phone, or you out right bought another one from some place else.

WiFi Router requires a cell data connection, and allows you to share it with other devices. How does that help in this case???
Anyone that upgraded to an atrix that had an unlimited data plan have to change plans for atts supposed 4g service or did u get to keep unlimited?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You can keep your unlimited if you are grandfathered in. A simple search would have answered that for you.
Thanks for the answer and the extra criticism

what my buddy at ATT had to do for me was change me to the unlimited enterprise data connection in order to keep it through the upgrade process and not have to bump me down to 2GB and then call and have it reactivated. For some reason when they came out with the new plans for data the old sku for unlimited data wont push through their system onto the newest phones, for example when u update to the atrix. His coworker noticed that if you switch the plan to unlimited enterprise during as you process the upgrade, itll stick with unlimited without them having to call in to support and have it reactivated. (much less hassle)
The price is the same, and theres no penalty for switching to this plan, but he said i have exchange support or something now? i'm not sure, its not something i'd use.
so if you want the most painless transition just toss the idea out there to get switched to enterprise unlimited for 30 and itll stick. say a little birdie told you

You don't even have to do that. As long as you are already on some sort of grandfathered PDA data plan(ie. BB, iPhone, SMT) it will show in the system the
"4G" unlimited option.
All I did was call up at&t and made sure I kept my unlimited plan...They said no problem and switched me over to the "Smartphone Unlimited Data Plan" I had more trouble with text plans more than anything, seems I had the iPhone 1500 text plan and they don't carry it no more so i had to upgrade to the unlimited plan. Not much of a difference just 5.00 more I really didn't care but I when I called and question them about it they said they would also start a case and see if they could get my old plan back. But back to the data no real problems at all on call one supervisor and they gave me unlimited data again.
I had no issues with keeping my unlimited plan at all.
It's a simple billing code change for the Atrix.
Here are the billing codes for consumer unlimited data plans. (Enterprise plans not listed)
iPhone unlimited code is
GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - CMB1
3G Smartphone unlimited code is
GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - DPPB
4G smartphone unlimited code is
GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - HSDPPB

Its supposed to be the 4G unlimited so I would call and change it. The rep changed mine right in the store, not sure why they don't do it for everyone.

rjohnstone is correct the three codes listed above are the grandfather unlimited smartphone (non enterprise) plans you should see if you previously had them prior to the 200/2000/4000 rate plans AT&T sells now.
I just changed my last phone (Captivate) to the Atrix
and on my data rate section only it shows both PRS WAP UNLTD DOM - DPPB
and GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - HSDPPB listed but each have a legend number listed showing they removed me from DPPB 3G to HSDPPB 4G unlimited.
I am testing the theory by downloading TF2 (10GB) now =)

So where on my account do I check what data plan code I have?
It's called the Smartphone Personal plan, 4G version.
My account just says Smartphone plan unlimited. It doesnt say 3g or 4g. Should I assume 4g or should i call them to confirm?
