I have a HTC Touch Diamond, and have played around with it for a while but have never really dabbled as scared of bricking my shiny new phone. I have however just dug out my good old P3300, and I am wanting to try some stuff on that.
I am a complete noob when it comes to flashing ROMs and would really appreciate some help/advice, I have searched the forums for hours and not found anything that seemed to work fully or easy to install (ish).
I would love to have a linux based OS on my phone but a lot of them seem to still be a WIP, is this the case?
The phone at the moment is locked to T-mobile as it is a MDA Compact III, so ideally whether I get linux based or WM based I would like to unlock the phone too as I am now with Orange.
If Linux is not an option could anybody point me in the right direction of a fast stable WM based ROM with good battery life (apps/functions not massively important)
I know this has been a long message, but only after a lot of searching I still feel I have a lot of questions and best to post it in one thread instead of dotted all over the site.
If anybody could help I would massively appreciate it.
This is the place to start.

As far as I know HTC devices work with Windows Mobile operating systems (except few with Google's Android o.s.) and all the custom ROMs you can find here are WM. Since our beloved Artemis is a complete but not so powerful device I suggest to look for a light ROM, with no useless "cubes" or graphic complications..there are many of them..You may also want to upgrade your radio (not FM)..All this can be done AFTER CID unlocking...it's all in the Wki section linked by ark666. Custom ROMs are never "perfect" but they are far better than the original ones
**This post was longer then I intended, so I highlighted the important stuff in blue, if you wanna skip past the drivel. **
Since this is my first post, let me just say what an amazing community this seems to be. I've done a bit of lurking over the last couple of weeks, and everyone seems quite friendly and knowledgeable. I, however, am not. Well, knowledgeable that is..
So heres the thing. I have an Alltel Touch 6900, which is now on the Verizon network. Joy. I would really like to give WM6.5 a test drive, but I've learnt that it isn't as simple as just an upgrade. I have no experience unlocking, and have only flashed from 6.0 to 6.1, with official Alltel roms. (funny story, the guy at the Verizon store said I should flash over to a Verizon rom, which I can download from their website, and stick a staple in the antenna plug in the back of the phone to take care of the GPS problems I was having.. Good call, bub. I got a new (read refurbished) 6900 through warranty.) Now this newish phone I have works great. Great signal, amazing Internet speed, and crappy GPS, but good enough for what I use it for.
Sorry, this is getting longer then I had intended. I sometimes get long winded. The big questions are, should I be going with Alltel, or Verizon software/FAQs and Guides on this phone. My gut tells me Alltel, but who knows? Probably one of you guys or gals. The other thing is, I'm paranoid, and poor. I can't afford to replace a bricked phone, unless I trick them into replacing it for free. Also, I'm worried that I won't be able to go back to 6.1 if I hate 6.5 for whatever reason. Are these real fears? Or am I just being stupid?
Guys, I'm really sorry for posting these questions. I've been trying to get through the nearly 1000 pages of posts in several topics, and I'm sure I can do it. Last time I felt like this was when I switched over to custom firmware on my PSP. I even read someone saying this was a lot safer then flashing a PSP in another forum somewhere. But its a lot to take in, especially for a relative smartphone newbie like myself.
I just flashed for my first time...
Verizon 6900 flashed NFSFans 6.5 and love it. I was scared too, but its really not that bad if you read up and just follow the directions on here. 6.5FAQ walks you through it step by step.
And 6.5 is great, very finger friendly, I did add different calendar and keyboards though, but they are cab's and thats pretty safe.
Hope you take the jump. as for your alltel vs VZ questions, I have no clue but someone will guide you though I am sure. Great site..

I was really impressed with NFSFAN's WinMo 6.5 ROM (latest version). I unlocked my phone, still on Verizon, I did not really need to unlock it in the first place though. Unlocking is fairly easy, I did so when I first flashed to HTC TouchFlo 3D. Great ROM btw.

Actually, unlocking *is* necessary. WM ROMs are digitally signed, and the phone's bootloader reflects this. Without unlocking, a Verizon phone cannot have a ROM installed that is not signed by Verizon. (At least that's my understanding.) So yeah, you need to unlock your phone. I recommend going here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
That's where I went to unlock mine. Yes, it sounds like a scary process, but it's not that bad. My one recommendation would be to make sure your USB cable is in good shape (ie. not run over all the time by your desk chair, causing a flimsy physical connection.) Other than that, it's pretty fool-proof.
I was looking over the internet yesterday and I found CLEAN english rom wm6.5 for Jack...At least that's what one chinese guy told me on a forum (chinese):
So maybe thing will move forward a lil' bit for us, Jack users.
Download:
IN TXT (since I'm a newbie-url lock)
I bet lots of you is still waiting for this.
I have it running...It's nice...although it has few glitches....lil chinese here and there...but beside that it really handy and CLEAN
I'm not an expert on this sort of thing, nor do I pretend to be one (although not from a lack of understanding, simply a lack of knowledge.) I gave it a shot. It seemed like it lags a little bit more than the standard Samsung/AT&T ROM. There were several things I liked about it including the new interfaces and much improved task manager and file explorer. There's a little bit too much Chinese in it for me (I tried to do a few tweeks but many of the registry/system files are in Chinese)
Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge/experience can help to make this a more user friendly ROM.
Yeah. I figured to compare this chinese rom with the original (treat chinese as a base model) and figure out which stuff to throw away from original...
And maybe do the other way around and figure out which stuff can be added to original.
But taht's just be...newbie talk.
cheers
Here is my 2 cents...
Maybe I shouldn't have bought these phones... I got 2 for a penny each. I ugraded to a Tilt 2 instantly.... My wife is still on the Jack.
It is God awful of a ROM loadaout for what it is... it's got alot under the hood for it's form factor and can perform nicely with the right tweaks and interface.
Sadly, The interest in this project is not at all dissimilar to Samsungs interest in Winmo as a whole. This is undoubtedly why we do not see the released ROMs from Sammy like we do with HTC.
HTC seems to know that if the public can enhance the device... They will buy the device. Samsungs lock and subsequent turnabout away from Microsoft will leave many users of this device in the dust and looking to ditch it quick. I did.
@ mykail or anyone who can help...:
Were you able to find a clean ROM for this phone?
I would love to upgrade to WM 6.5, but my device is unlocked, so the ATT option is not the best option for me (though it exists).
I have spent several days looking for it, but you've been longer than me, i just got the phone a week ago.
I appreciate any help in this issue.
I changed phones. I'm running HTC now on Android.
About the Jack. Haven't been searching for clean rom since November. Just few seconds ago popped in to our chinese friends and they are still developing. From what I saw it appears they are running Jack @ Win7.

Help with ROM issues
Hi Guys,
At first i must say sorry for re-open this post. there is a lot of months since the last response.
I bought a samsung sgh-i637 in LatinAmerica, playing on the internet i used the AT&T ROM for upgrading to Windows Mobile 6.5 but as you know that rom has a lot of programas of AT&T and also they change the major of keys (keypad) functionability... and at the end the phone still stay locked for AT&T.
I want to know if is possible get a ROM without the AT&T programs and also that it unlock my phone for use with any phone operator.
Thanks a lot!
I have been running Froyo for three days now as my primary phone Operating System. Although NAND is not available and may never be for the HD2, 99.9% of everyday functionality is.
At this moment, the only thing I can think of that doesn't work is WiFi tethering, which is not a big deal for me.
I thought about writing a tutorial along the same lines as my others; a simple, step-by-step method for locating, downloading, installing and running Android on our T-Mobile US HD2, but I am not sure that there is enough interest here.
Before anyone points out that there are such tuts over on the Leo forum, I would like to mention that they are poorly written and confusing for a complete newbie. I believe that I can do a much better job myself.
If I get 10 positive responses to this thread, whether by poll or by reply, I will write the tut. Negative responses will not count, but are welcome.
I think a simple step by step walk through is a great idea!

newbie in need
I will jump on this band wagon...I would love to see a step by step guide to Android for my HD2 t-mobile us. I just got a 32g sandisc and thought about using my original 16g for Android. Can you advise me?
Thanks for the thread
I have already installed android myself. Was alot of reading before I felt comfortable to try. You are right, the documentation in the Leo HD2 forum can be overwhelming. Give it a go, I am sure it will be appreciated!

I voted yes.. I was curious: what is the difference between running android on a normal hd2 vs the tmobile hd2? I just flashed a bios and radio on my us tmobile and I was about to attempt to run FroyoStone_Sense.
Android????
I thought about doing the android on hd2, but like you said, it seems to confusing, and dangerous, i don't want to brick my phone, and would i have to use another sd card just to run android on my phone. I am just safe running spb mobile shell along with htc sense that came with my hd2, i don't know, help me.
yes
yes - i would be interested in a tut for the tmo hd2
I think it's a great idea... Reading is important, but a lot of people here aren't that technical and I think that they do get lost in some of the verbiage used in the posts...
Please
I personally would greatly appreciate it. I fried my first HD2 playing with Android a few weeks ago. HTC was kind enough to send me a replacement unit. Long story short I would prefer not to make the same mistakes.
Good Idea
I think its a good idea i learned years ago how to flash phones and create different partitions on your sd card for different roms, but i did jack up my fair share of sd cards during the process, luckily never a phone lol. I think it would be good for other people to not have the same amount of issues. Been running android for months on my HD2 tried every flavor, but with recent releases it is finally good enough for everyday use.
Thanks!
Thanks to everyone who responded! The results were overwhelmingly positive, all the replies were "yes" and all but 1 of the 18 polled agreed as well.
As promised, I will start the tut immediately (flashing my phone now and will re-install Android in a bit to ensure I have the steps right) and it should be up this evening or tomorrow morning.

can't wait to try it out. Anyway to backup the current phone before flashing to android?

We aren't "flashing" per se. Your Phone's ROM is untouched, you just install and run Android from the SD card. When Android starts, most of Windows Mobile is shut down (I'm not 100% sure of the whole process, sorry) and Linux is loaded, which runs Android. If it helps, you could think of it as full-screen Emulator, but Android takes over fully.
I sync to Google via Exchange (see my sig for the link on how to do it yourself) and when I switched to Android, my contacts were also added along with the FB stuff that I added back in Sense on WinMo.
By the way, this thread is officially dead. I did indeed write the tutorial and it's in my sig as a link as well.
Hope this helps!

Sorry about that, Folks!
Since Android has graced our amazing HD2s, I have grown a strong interest in learning more about and experincing Linux.
Recent releases of Android for HD2, while good and getting better, seem to have gone backwards in some areas. I have spent countless hours experimenting, reading, etc. So now, I seek the assistance of the community; specifically that of the Android Chef's - for lack of a better term.
I am asking for a little guidance in how I may become self sufficient and build my own Android ROMs for our HD2s. I am hoping I can solve some of my own issues, and in turn provide my experiance and ROM - if it's up to snuff - back to the community here.
TL;DR
Would some kind soul point me to the location to Read, download applications, etc or provide some minor instruction on building my own Android ROM. I do not have an aversion to reading and learning on my own, I have just hit a road block as to the direction I should take.
Thank you in advance.

You can use coffeeshop to make your own android build.

Unfortunately, Coffeeshop isn't working at the moment. I'm experimenting with something else. I basically am trying to create an android rom the normal way in hopes i'll pick something up from that.
Got my Ubuntu / Virtualbox running and just finished installation. Now to get the Java.jde and .bin working.
Whole thing makes my head spin. Trying to figure out how to get our Kernal involved in the whole thing. I'm pretty sure i got the module thing "kinda" figured out.
Nothing still?
Makes me think these builds magically appeared out of nowhere
I like Linux, but it really depends on what your gonna use it for. I don't have it on my comp as a daily driver but its good if you like to tinker with.
As far as android, is there a kitchen for it? I had a kitchen for my HC Vouge and it was nice..just point and click. I just got my HD2 today and I love it.
Id really like to dive into dev for the Hd2 as far as themes and such go, but general dev,ill leave that for the pros.lol

I'm not really sure how to theme with the android builds on the HD2 quite yet.
And yes, there are a couple kitchens for Android. They say they are not compatable with our HD2, but that has not stopped me from tinkering around with them and trying to learn as much as possible.
Trying to figure out how to actually build my own bootable Android ROM, problem is there is little to know info on how the few people who offer their ROMs actually performed this feat. if there is, I sure as hell have not found it.
I've spent 7+ hours reading and searching today alone. Not counting the last couple weeks.
As it looks like no one is really willing to offer me any help - must be an exclusive club or something - I'm prying I stumble upon a way to make it work.
/sigh... back to Ubuntu I go...
Hi friend, I do just want build my own rom for my hd2.

Sup Shree,
Once I figure it out, or someone gives me a little help with it, i'll let you know. So far I have created two custom ROMs, but they only work for native android devices as far as I know.
I'm confused with the whole file structure and how to integrate our custom kernels and modules into the ROM so we can actually use our hardware.
Oh, and I got coffeeshop to work. Had a problem where ./start.sh wouldn't run from terminal. I got it to run another way though. Now, I'm left with a System.ex2 file I'm not sure what to do with yet, lol.
