The SMD-element on payment HTC Magician was broke off - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Please forgive my English
At dismantling at HTC Magician has been broken off SMD an element which is near the reserve accumulator, this element has been soldered with to edge, nearby an inscription about a year of release 2004-10-06. On all photos on dismantling which already spread it it is visible...
It by the way not marked, on a payment is also similar elements... What it for an element (probably resistor) what face value??? And for what it is necessary???
Give the link to the Service instruction or the scheme.

Send somebody the SERVICE MANUAL on HTC Magician on
e-mail: [email protected]

Thought that here will help, but nobody has responded. Here has found the helpful information.
It is the ceramic condenser. Has alignment function on a direct current so its absence should not affect device work considerably. Presumably has capacity to 0,1 мкF, working pressure - to 4 V.

Brando 10th era Dual SIM holder

I ordered it 2 days ago and it arrived today. Works quite well with its built-in program. What I like is that it doesn't switch to the other SIM when switching off/on the radio. Switching using Wivit doesn't work. Does anyone know of a small, preferrably freeware Today plugin that would display provider name or telephone number?
I had to make my battery thinner to make the thing fit without damaging the battery cover or any other plastic parts.
Hi, I take it you have this working on the magician. Do you have a web link?
Here's the link; http://mobile.brando.com.hk/. You'll see it on the top right side of the page.
Is it compatible with XDA II?
Let me know please, thanks....

DKToday
So this one ships with proprietary software?
Can you tell us a lttle about how you got it to work - I have a similar looking dual sim that I cannot get to work
Thanks
Vlado
@rmg: thanks. i'll check out your suggestion.
@wencyv: it should work but i cannot give any personal guarantees. Brando's website states that it is compatible with all phones but does not indicate PDA phones specifically. i just took the risk in orderring. i decided to order this adapter for three reasons;
1. i thought it was thin enough.
2. no need to cut the SIM cards.
3. i still have with me a monstrous dual SIM card adapter that i used in my Nokia 6310 and it works in my S100 but there's no way to put the battery cover.
@evlado
Mechanical:
the adapter looks like a letter "C". on one end, a SIM card can be slipped in (this is the primary SIM). on the other end, the ribbon cable has a bit of glue in order to stick the SIM so it does not move while inserting it into the unit's SIM holder. my unit's SIM holder is quite tight even for just the SIM card alone.
at first I thought that this adapter was just the right thickness but eventually i couldn't make the battery cover fit, therefore just decided to make the battery thinner by removing the thinner side of the battery's case using a very thin sharp knife. the battery's plastic case seems soft but its actually quite brittle.
How it works:
the adapter is pre-programmed with its own STK menu. the features are as follows;
1. SIM telephone numbers can be typed in for easier menu identification.
2. there is no need to switch the radio offon to switch SIMs.
3. supported languages are english and chinese.
4. two display modes (i see no difference)
5. pre-defined SIM switch interval time (2,3,4,6,8,10,15,20,25, and 30 min.).
i discovered that if the radio is switched off then on again, it activates the last used SIM. i like this feature because if i'm going on a business trip then i switch to my company's SIM from the time i leave the house or office. when i get into the plane i have to activate flight mode, and when arriving at my destination switching off flight mode still activates my company's SIM. with other adapters it requires the process of switching off/on twice to activate my company's SIM. of course there are software like Wivit for these type of adapters, but then again its an additional cost.
bugs:
the radio must first be on before switching SIMs, otherwise the radio is switched on showing the right provider name in the phone app but calls are diverted directly to the active SIMs's voicemail.
So you had to scratch the battery case to make room for the holder? Was this an easy thing to do, or did you run the risk of damaging the battery?
I am looking for a dual holder for my Wizard, but don't want to cut my sims. Anyone know which one will fit?
hi there,
sorry for sounding a bit dull. could you please explain the thinning the battery a bit more in detail. was it the the battery or the cover you thinned. i am looking to dothe same with my wizard. and does it viod the warranty.
many thanks for your help

Any screen shots of what it looks like on the PPC - I was trying to work out where the menu would be shown.
Terran
the S100 battery cover isn't thick enough to compensate for the dual sim adapter's thickness of a bit over 1 mm. If ever, one would need special tools (ie. milling machine or similar) to make a professional job.
another reason why i decided to modify the battery is that it is available in many online/retail shops. if i do decide to sell my unit, putting a new battery is a selling point.
the S100 battery is composed of two plastic parts, the box which holds the batteries and is 5 mm thick. this is where the connectors can be seen. then there is the cover which is 2 mm thick and is glued in some places with some sort of super glue. the middle part is glued to the battery itself with a strong double side tape. i used a thin sharp knife to separate the box with the cover. this was an easy job but at some point the knife went too deep and i saw a little spark. i must have hit some electrical point in the the pcb. luckily the battery still works. i broke the cover into pieces while trying to remove it from the middle part. the whole process took me 5 minutes. attached is a zip file containing some photos hoping that you guys would have a better idea of what i did.
unfortunately i don't have a screen capture utility installed on my unit. once the dual sim adapter is in place and the radio is on, an icon symbolizing a sim card is automatically created within the program menu. when the radio is off this icon disappears. starting this app will display a window with the title AUT. below is the menu tree and functions.
1. note: 1 and 2 are position for sim card identificating
2. which can be labled by a function in the set menu.
Set
...Back ----------------- save settings and return to previous menu
Edit 1 ------------------ to lable sim card 1
Edit 2 ------------------ to lable sim card 2
Sw On ----------------- activate Set switch time
Sw Off ----------------- deactivate Set switch time
Set switch time ------ time setting for sim card switching
English ---------------- menu in english
Chinese --------------- menu in chinese
Display mode 1 ------ i don't see a difference between these two modes. according to the very vague and poorly written description (in english) in the packaging, it is somehow phone dependent
Display mode 2
...Abort ---------------- exit without saving settings
the dual sim adapter works very well even when tt5.2 is running. now i have one device less to carry in my travels. i always carry with me a swiss power travel adapter with a usb attachment then i use a very small 4-port usb hub so i can charge my S100, Jabra BT800, Supertooth II car bt handsfree, and my tt gps receiver all at the same time.
sorry for the late reply guys/gals. i was out of town.

Hi Zerimar,
Does it work with wivit sim status switcher?
http://www.wivit.com
Francis.
I already mentioned this on my first post. No it doesn't. Also you don't need Wivit 'coz it has its own STK menu. I just use DKToday, a freeware to know which SIM is active.
Sorry for the stupid question
I didn't see the post.
Francis
No problem. The dual sim card adapter has been working like a charm.
hi zerimar: ordered in europe?
if it arrived in two days, thats a short trip coming from HK to switzerland
Shall I assume you orderd it from switzerland or EU?
I dont dare to order from HK
Many thanks
Hola,

At first I also had my doubts but Brando proved that it's a very responsible company. In a span of three years, I have bought several items for my SE P900 and Samsung D500m and never had problems with the products. If ever I have a technical question, they reply immediately.
Many thanks for quick response, and for spanish language use.
no doubt about them, but i fear money transfer and trasportation fares, custom delays......
Are you aware of any EU distributor or reseller??
best regards
I've always paid using my credit card. It's usually the easiest way. I don't know about Spain but I think here in Switzerland anything upto CHF 100.00 doesn't get taxed.
I've once seen an internet seller from Germany. I can't remember right now but I'll look for it and let you know.
PS. I'm basically Spanish born and raised in the Philippines and have been living in Switzerland for the past 14 years. I hope my Spanish writing was correct. I could speak better than write since nowadays I hardly communicate in Spanish.
just to share with others: I did buy my leather casing with my previous PDA phone at brando before, I think that was last March.... my item just came right away after 4 days without any problem/hassle... I am planning to buy this dual sim maybe next year

O2 Exec/Universal: I want to take it apart, any Guidlines ??

Has any one taken a universal apart, or could help me with some guidelines.
Read the Wiki or do some searching..

Please post the link of the service manual!!!
Please scan it in if you don't have it in electronic form.
When I say "we", I'm referring to the users of this forum...
It's available for download from the FTP server..
And you would know this if you bothered using 20sek on SEARCHING!
A search for UNIVERSAL SERVICE MANUAL gives all the info you need!
quiblet:
You are new to this site; please use the search function before asking. :!:
I find it highly unlikely that your problems are unique and never asked before.
Leek:
I'm at work, so I don't have FTP access.
It should be in the upload folder if I remember corectly..
Are you saying I'm not a "user"?
I spent hours searching. I browsed the FTP server.
The Wizard manual is there (Prodigy dah dah dah).
In fact, I helped people find it, by linking to it (see my posts). We're not all clueless, but the site needs improvement as far as linking information. Just a week ago, the Wiki was entirely broken.
I don't see a Universal manual. I browsed around 6 days ago. I haven't seen any recent anouncements of a new one.
The Wiki has no link on the Universal page to any service manual. Lots of technical information and pictures, but no PDF service manual -- nothing like the Wizard's.
I'm a computer scientist and have been programming assembly code since 1985, so it's not like I can't navigate.
leek:
It was there when I downloaded a few weeks ago..
If it has been removed, I shall extend my sincere appologies to you.
I shall allso see if I have a copy on my harddrive when I get home..
Well, it looks like I don't have to appologize at all!
It took me less than a minute when I found a computer with FTP acces..
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Un...C_CONFIDENTIAL_-_UNIVERSAL_SERVICE_MANUAL.pdf
Now, I haven't been programming since 1985, cuz I was born in 1985.
But root\Universal\Manuals etc doesn't seem to be the worst place to look for a manual, is it?
Anyway; I'm glad you took the time to write a constructive reply to my post..
Most people don't bother..
Strange... I did not see that last week when I searched. If it was there, I don't know how I missed it.
I will fix the Wiki (assuming it works again) to point to it.
You have redeemed yourself. And so shall I.

Thanks - I have taken the Universal completely apart.

I have a headset fault that I have tried to fix by inserting the headset several times. And looks like I need a Motherboard. Does anyone know where I can get one????
Try this. You will have to send it to them I think.

Been trying to access to the ftp server and look at the service manual. but then it just say permission denied when i key in my user name. Do i need any special rights to enter the ftp site?
You need to right click on this link, select copy shortcut, open your browser and paste into the address bar.

eh? surely all you need is a 3.5mm 4 point headphone jack? the usual fault is the detection microswitch 'sticks' in place and closes the circuit so the phone always thinks there is a headset attached. What makes you thnk you need a board? And why isn't your unit under warranty being less than a year old? :?: ( exec brand universals have 2 years)
Richard
p.s if you *really* need a board drop me a pm.
Thanks for the info !
I have the 4 point jack that came with the unit, as for the microswitch is there any way to reset it ?? manually.
I bought my unit from Ebay shortly after the unit developed this fault and the O2 warranty states that the original purchaser only can use the warranty, HTC Europe on reading the website will repair it but for a charge.
So I'm painfully living with the fault currently.

Does the microswitch work? Have you put a metre accross the contacts and checked it? Usually they just stick rather than fail, but they are available as a spare if you look hard enough. ( Farnell's / CPC etc )
HTCeurope will not ( from experience ) repair XDA branded units. As for the warranty not being transferrable according to their terms, threaten to sue as it's against your 'hooman writes' or summat- works for me  ( but never tried with o2 )
Richard
Where is the microswitch ????
Where can I measure on the actual headset jack??
Thanks

It's *inside* the socket, when you insert the headphone jack plug, it depresses to detect insertion. You measure across the contacts.

Richard
I see 4 contacts on the top of the Jack plug, I have measured for open & closed circuit but have come to no conclusion - to fix this If I unsolder the heaset Jack and then turn the unit on again will this cancel the microswitch just to prove the fault?? Then I will buy another jack??
Your thoughts
Thanks

HTC TyTN vs i-mate JASJAM

Now that the JasJam has made an appearance I would like to start a thread to compare these two models - especially as I have not yet plunged into a purchase.
1. The screen shots of the two variants appear to show a slight difference in the spacing of the buttons. I have been told by a reseller that JasJam's buttons have raised symbols and have a better feel where as TyTN's are flat. Can anyone comment on that?
2. There appears to be some confusion about Bluetooth. The club i-mate web site states that JasJam is Bluetooth v1.2 without EDR, however, the specs on a number of the reseller's sites states v2.0. HTC states ton its site that the TyTN is v2.0 without EDR. Can anyone clear that up?
3. The club i-mate site states the JasJam has IrDA whereas HTC makes no mention of this for TyTN. However, a reseller who sells both has told me that both variants have IrDA. Can anyone confirm that?
4. Finally, there is much discussion about screen alignment issues with the TyTN, however, I have seen nothing yet to suggest that the JasJam is suffering from the same fate. I did see one other post on another forum wondering about the same question. Can anyone pass a comment about that most importand topic?
Presently, in the USA at least the resell price is about $150 more for the JasJam. The answers to the 4 questions above will go along way to determining whether ther premium price is worth paying or not.

1. The JasJam is a HERM100 device. The TyTN is a HERM200. They are identical functionally. The difference is the button configuration.
2. Both phones have Bluetooth 2.0 without EDR (makes you wonder how they can that BT2.0, but that's another conversation).
3. Both have IrDA (which most people never use)
4. (Never had a screen alignment problem with two TyTN's and never used a JasJam).
I can tell you that I had originally intended to buy the i-Mate version (there seem to be more frequent ROM updates, support website, etc.), but I definitely don't feel it's worth a premium price.
Furthermore, i-Mate seems to flood its ExtROM with a bunch of crap, which you'll need to remove anyway...
Just my opinion...
JASJAM
I have a JASJAM and I agree on a couple of points that have been raised, unecessary software loads, the stability is improved over the initial release of the K-Jam, the buttons and keyboard are excellent.
Additional points on the positive are the black finish is very strong and after one fall from the car to the road I have no scratches and screen intact. The jog wheel is reason alone to upgrade as responding to email is fast and easy because it can navigate pretty well all menus with it and not having to use the stylus..
This the first 3G phone I have been able to use as Edge on the K-Jam is unsupported here in Australia; so the higher download speed and using this as a USB modem are excellent.
An annoying point is that the push email doesn't work on WLan it only works on GPRS and I am desperately looking for the registry hack to fix this to save $ on downloads.
The WMP Today utility is really useful being able to control Media Player from the Today Screen is really handy for padcast playback. However it would be even more useful if the jog wheel worked on this utility as well as the buttons are too small for finger use.
Having A2DP work out of the box is great and I have no skipping as others have reported.
Overall downloading and playing back podcasts on this phone is a very enjoyablevexperience. As an initial experience with this device (and I have used PDAs since the Palm Vx) it is a very functional and reliable item.
I have the JasJam and I bought because it looked better the TyTN to me. Technically I should I have purchased the TyTN (because it was cheaper)but I did not like keyboard when I tried it. I have not had the alignment issue but I can't say it does not exist because not too many people with the JasJam yet.

my experience with HTC support

Disaster!!!
I sent them a mail regarding the "jointstereo" default value for the A2DP profile (you can find the details in another thread). I specified all details of the problem.
reply 1: can you please tell which headset you are using (I had already told them)
reply 2: There is no reason why your mobilephone doesn't work with the A2DP headset. It is possible that the headset is faulty. Can you please try with other headsets (I had already written that I had tried more than one and it was a problem with stereo output not with the headset not working)
reply 3: they reply in Italian (because of my name - I had always used English so far) that the SE HBH-DS970 is not compatible and the SE website does not report the HTC P3600 as compatible. I write back in ENGLISH that it is not a matter of compatibility but a matter of a registry setting and I point them to this forum so that they can see there is a solution.
reply 4: "I am sorry but we can only offer email support in English." The only person using Italian in previous messages was someone from HTC support! I write back "I have always written in English. You should really put your act together"
reply 5: the registry modification described in the forum is against warranty terms and will void your warranty. (!!!) I wrote back asking what the supported way is to have stereo output without voiding the warranty.... waiting for reply 6....
This is ridiculous!
Update: maybe this is reply 6....
The following message to <[email protected]> was undeliverable.
The reason for the problem:

Talk about BAD support! Feel with you man! But I must admit this is the first time I hear about HTC' support beeing this bad... I know they can be slow, and somewhat "unclear" on the replies(i.e. the GPS questions), but this was just plain old bad support....
Hope HTC reads this and apologizes...

Well I could also mention that when you send a message you receive the same reply twice from two different addresses (one is the generic customer support address and one is a person - who keeps changing at every reply) and if you reply back to both addresses then your problem becomes two problems and you start getting different answers from different people. Or the fact that every time they forward the problem internally the ProblemID field gets changed so everything becomes a total mess.
I deleted the first few messages but these are the subjects for the last 6 I have received:
Problem ID 061206em09545176
Problem ID 061203EM16144174
Your call ref : 061203EM16144174
Problem ID 061207EM16535631
Problem ID 061207EM16535686
Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
I just hope this device works the way it should otherwise it's going to be big trouble!
No surprise, that happens when HTC outsources support, and does not provide proper training to the callcenters... HTC fans could explain this with their rapid growth, and lots of fires to put out on the way, but since they are also reporting double digit profit increases every year, they should spend on proper support, in house. HTC´s center for Europe is in Britain, and even a customer from there is not serviced right. What can other countries expect, that do not even have a service center?
Until recently it was easy for HTC - "just call your operator", but now it´s their turn...
latest reply without additional comments:

>So what is the approved solution to fix this problem?
There's no approved official solution!
If Microsoft creates a protocol with your SonyEricsson stereo BT headset settings then the A2DP fuctunality will stop working on other BT stereo headsets with the standard configuration.
It's sounds a dilema but at least you know that following the instructions on the XDA forum the problem is sorted and probably is what you need to do to overcome this problem.
Another idea is to contact SonyEricsson and check for updates.
I think it's already fixed now.

Damaged Universal - free to a good home

Hi folks,
The USB connector on my Universal (an O2 XDA Exec) came loose a few weeks ago, so it's basically useless to me. I managed to get some charge into it by very carefully positioning it with tweezers so that it rests on the PCB correctly, but that's too much hassle for daily use. With the charge available, I did a factory reset to clear the onboard memory.
Other than that, and the main camera not working, everything is fine; the ROM is upgraded to WM6 thanks to the good folks here.
If somebody in the UK wants it for spares or whatever, just let me know - no fee, but something to cover postage would be appreciated, or I'm based near Staines if you want to meet up to get it. Please reply to this thread, so that everybody knows when it's taken.
Cheers,
Darren
Hi Darren,
I'd appreciate it, if it's still available please. I'll PM you
Is it still available? I'd really could use a screen!
Thanks!
Hi Darren
I would very interested in the Uni if is still available as mine needs a few bits and pieces after a dodgy recasing effort by a so called expert. I live in the UK and will gladly cover your postage.
If still available please PM
Hi folks,
Sorry for the late response. My XDA Developers account profile had an old email address, so I didn't get notified of your replies.
As the first person to reply, xiasma gets the phone.
Cheers,
Darren
