Can the camera on XDA2 be removed?

:?: hi, was thinking of buying xda2 but there is a stupid rule in my work place which does not allows any imaging device (xda included) to enter into the working enviorment.
so i was thinking, can the camera be physically removed (diy) or at least can it be disable using software or hardware (ie: disconnecting the wires to the camera) ... ??
i really like xda2 and i am tired of xda1 ... and one to help?
by the way, does this forum teaches how to open up a xda2? ...

The camera software is located in the extended rom part of the installation procedure. If you were to modify the extended rom to remove that CAB file (or just not let the autorun that installs those files run after a hard reset (i.e. soft reset it before it has a chance to run those files) then you would not be able to access the camera at all from the device (your work can inspect it all they'd like). This way you don't have to mod your xda ii and can always replace the cab later if you want to use the camera.

Youcould unlock the extended rom, back it up then delete the camera cab, however I doubt very much whether your security conscious company accept your word that the camera cannot be operated. Maybe you should get an xda1 for work.

I really don't think the company would object if they saw that there was no way to access the camera portion through software. There is a program here called EREdit2003 that can backup / modify extended ROMs.
I would deffinetly NOT open up the phone for a variety of reasons - especially warrenty - Nothing is worth voiding a warrenty on a multi-hundred dollar phone.

Oh, just thought of this very low-tech solution:
buy an XDA I Krusell case for it - it covers the camera lens. If your company isn't too savvy on inspecting it (i.e. they don't care to take off the case) than this could work as well. Obviously a long shot if your company is so security minded - but you never know.

why don't you buy an imate from KSA they come from the maifacurar without a camera option, not even a place for it

There are 2 ways not to activate the camera:
- The easist way: You can set the button 3 to "none" in settings/buttons. If you don't like to see the camera icon in program windows: go to windows/start up/programs and delete the link file (camera.lnk)
:lol: - Second way: Do not install the CAB software from the extended ROM. It can be done by: delete the file in config.txt. Other way, you rename the autorun file to .ex1 and run cab file manually after hardreset your XDAII

Thanks a lot for all these help! finally got the xda2 today at S$1398 with a line to the local telco (w/o line is S$1598).
have yet to explore the device ... but i'm very sure i can display the camera function with so much help from you guys!~
the option about getting a leather case w/o the hole for camera is out .. the security guard at my work place are not so dumb .. hehe, they remove the leather case and check. ... some other guy had already tried that before .. it won't work ^^

sonadt's method sounds great too .. deleting the link and disable the hot button ... but if i use file explorer to find the camera .exe file, will i be still able to activate the camera? i suspose so ... as for the 2nd method, 'not installing the cab' - sounds like a big task to me. in short, does it means that i need to flash the rom?

If you make the extended rom visible and editable you can remove the cab file and also the link as described, you will then have zero access to the camera as the software is not present to process/drive the hardware.

One easy way of uninstalling the camera software is to perform a hard-reset and just before the ROM autoinstaller starts perform a soft-reset, when it comes back you will have a normal Pocket PC minus the software that auto installs. But if for some reason you need to install the rest of the software that comes in the phone you can always install that by hand (minus the camera .cab of course), but for that you need to perform a small hack to be able to see the Extended Rom, there is an installer around here (forgot the name) that let's you uncover the extended rom section of your device and manually install the .cabs.
On the other hand, a disabled camera is still a camera, so chances are your security staff will not allow it inside anyways since it's almost like trying to get a regular camera in the premises but without film, they will not allow it no matter what.

Although this won't apply to the initial poster now, but for future reference, Saudi Arabia sells the Imate here without the Camera, it is manufactured like that especially for them. It retails at approx $850 here, if anyone is interested I can look into places that take on-line orders.

anyone knows what happen with the camera, it is showing a line in the screen only in camera model. see pictures, thanks. before don't have, just appeared recent days.

hi did you find a solution for this? i have the same problem but the line is towards the right hand of the screen.
Anybody else with a solution?
this line changes its colour according to background of the picture you take.. on lighter/bright environments it almost disappears..

try to bring it to HTC service center in your town, i found somebody here fixed this problem by bringing it to service center. I've never flashed my ROM, so i cant suggest u how do it sorry (again)

[noob] Images problem

I know it's something simple, but I have wizard for 4 days now and I really don't know what's going on (and i didn't find it here or in google, 4h of searching is enough)
so:
Images & Videos icon in Programs menu doesn't work. It just refreshes the screen nothing else.
What's more - in contact menu (contact -> menu -> edit) there is "choose image" and when i click it, it doesn't work as well.
Explorer opens my images with s2v.
It's Windows Mobile 5, previous owner changed its language and maybe did something wrong, i think i must install something or change smtg in registry ?
give me hints, i must have contacts' pictures

52 viewers and no reply to you either. Funny eh? I have not received my Wizard yet, so I don't have the ability to replicate or diagnose your problem. However, I do know that reflashing my device always seemed to help when I had a problem such as this.
Search for your original ROM and reflash it. That might take care of te problem. Maybe after, if that works, upgrade to 6.0 or beyond.
According to UPS Tracking, I should receive my device tommorrow and will be able to help better. It has left MN, hit IN and Kentucky on it's way to SC, so apparently on time. woo hoo.

Hi, I was thinking about reflashing my phone, but I'm waiting for full Embedded Linux or other linux support (I've read that they're working on it).
But I found smtg interesting, concerning my problem:
Images & Videos still doesn't work - and nothing but reflashing will do propably (propably, probably jeez this language is odd ),
but!
s2v has an option to assign viewed picture to contact and it works pretty well, i can see photos in contact list, WisBar Advance Desktop and when I'm calling.
so I change my question into:
What is the name of default image viewer in windows mobile 5? Isn't it Internet Explorer lol?

It's still a long ways off from being fully functional though.

all right, i've upgraded my phone to WM6, it runs and boots a lot faster and of course i've got no problems with images anymore
so it was basically something deleted or changed in my previous WM, topic can be closed now.

I saw this too,but it happens only when I slide open the phone in some apps.

I have same problem in my x2,and can't find any way to solve it ,I search vsync in registry,change 0 to 1,but it also ''screen tearing''
ps,x1 seem not has this problem...

I would have tested this already if I could but I will only be able to after a few days when I get my new X2 (again). I just wanted to give possible solutions besides turning on Vsync.

Activating VSync only will not solve your problem because screen tearing is usually caused by a combination of bad video and file access configuration.
To answer your request here is what I found for the VSync registry location (please confirm this):

Now this IS interesting. I dont know if its just me, but were HTC holding out on us display wise? Changing the BitsPerPixel (colourdepth) from 16 to 24bit, for some reason, whether the display is actually capable of true colour or not, not only MAKES THE SCREEN LOOK BETTER but its also FASTER

I'm not able to do this my X2 is not available for a a month or so.

Who is coming up with these crappy settings? Most of them are NONEXISTENT in my X2!!! And many of the rest are already much higher!
This is not a HTC phone and has no such hardware and NOT most of those HTC specific windows registry settings a HTC phone has.
Please post only registry settings and changes of such, which are existing in the X2.

I think all that Xareth says, comes from the HD2... But I tried to add the non-existent keys => nothing !
And i have already tried GfxBoost, NeoS2007 and SpeedBooster, this hasn't solved the problem.

First of all, really sorry to have disappeared but I have entered a new job and have been busy as heck to reach a stable setup.
Even though the testing of the reg keys failed, I am happy that it at least has gotten us closer to finding a solution since we found out they did not work
What next? Well, what else! Gotta try to find other ways. This time I can test since I have my X2 and am using it regularly.
@lo: don't give up, don't assume it's the end! I am now checking if it has to do with the SD card access (delayed reading).
@michaelthemage: I know you are frustrated and want a working answer at once, but:
1. this is a community forum not a support centre so don't assume I or anyone else is making up any crappy settings. We're just trying to find the right answers.
2. and yes, I can make mistakes just like you or anyone else. For example you did not read my first line saying I did not test the settings since I did not have a device to test with! Demanding much?
3. I don't think we can limit things to X2 only registry settings because first of all, it's not out there in the open to know which settings are only for X2! I removed the obvious HTC reg keys and went on from there. I think that is the next best thing to finding an answer, instead of hitting a dead end. I ask you to also try to find an answer or at least post something more constructive.
4. Sony previously worked with HTC (HTC was making the components for previous Sony devices) and therefore it is logical there may be some HTC keys which are applicable. I will tell you right now many fixes that work for HTC work for the X2! Have you ever wondered why? Of course I may be wrong too but I'm trying to find out if I am!
5. Let's go on to hardware. Many smartphone manufacturers are only integrators. Even HTC buys its parts from another company in China. So don't tell me it does not have similar hardware to HTC until you have opened both companys' phones and confirmed (which I have btw, the opening not the confirming). It's like saying LG Laptops do not have LCD screens like Samsung Laptops when Samsung manufactures the LCDs for LG.

1) AFTER CALL COMPLETION WHEN BALANCE IS NOTIFIED

3) DURING BALANCE CHECK

1st THREE LINES CAN BE SEEN COMPLETELY
BUT ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF THE 4th line is seen there.

it's just a thought, but have you tried changing the phone theme? See if the problem still persists!

This dialogbox isnt in the WM 6.5 Design, so i think the message shown in this dialogbox comes from a thirdplayer Software that is compiled for WM 6.1 or lower. Usually a Software uses the Designelements from the OS, but there are options for compiling to inherit an own "Designtheme" for this Software only. Check if there is an Update available for WM 6.5.
If this message comes from the system itself, i think you are powerless.

reinstall the soft. I think that's your chance to fix the problem. Do a backup first.
