Orange unveil SPV 2020
By: Anthony Newman, Thursday 6th November 2003, 10:53 GMT
The first Phone Edition device to come to Orange boasts Windows Mobile 2003, Bluetooth, a camera and more.
The Danish branch of European GSM provider Orange has today revealed the latest Microsoft-powered device in their range: the SPV 2020. The device is based on the same HTC Himalaya reference design as the XDA 2.
Meet Orange's SPV 2020
The phone offers tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM and GPRS, as well as Bluetooth and IR connectivity. The screen is a standard 16-bit transflective TFT display running at 240 x 320, and the package is driven by a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor with 64 MB of RAM. Expansion is in the form of an SDIO-capable SD/MMC slot. Finally, the new SPV includes a VGA digital camera.
The handheld runs Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition, which has introduced native support for MMS and multiple always-on email accounts, as well as continuing support for POP3 and IMAP4 email, instant messaging, SMS and full web access through Pocket Internet Explorer.
The current SPV (sound, pictures, video) line marked the first commercially-available Windows-powered Smartphone, and currently includes the SPV E100 and the newly-announced SPV E200, which like the SPV 2020 features Bluetooth and an integrated camera. The E200 and 2020 are thus complementary devices.
The SPV 2020 is unlikely to be in the shops before Christmas, as only Danish pricing and availability has yet been announced. Orange have stated a 3,999 DKK price tag, excluding VAT,
Ok Mr G,
I am a man of few words, I said "orange uk to launch xda 2"
in your reply it very clearly says....
'The Danish branch of European GSM provider Orange has today revealed the latest Microsoft-powered device in their range: the SPV 2020'
now correcrt me if i am wrong (and i'm sure your would) but there is a significant difference there - especially if you live in the uk !!!!
so i believe my statement that "No one else seems to have mentioned it , so here is an article published the other day"
isnt too far off the mark
the phrase look before you leap comes to mind !!!!
ANY WAY, WELL DONE, IT SHOWS YOU WERE PAYING ATTENTION !!
i'm a bit gutted about this... since i just got an xdaII and switched from orange to get it i would have held out for an orange release had i known.
oh well... still happy with the xdaII... not the network
@Fais
I'm the same as you - I left Orange after 12 years, just to get the XDA2. While the machine itself is cool, O2 are arse. No customer service quality at all compared with Orange.
Still, I spoke to Orange several times before I switched and asked them about the situation. Nobody mentioned the impending release of the XDA2 on their network, so they lost my loyal custom. No matter. I'll be back to Orange when my o2 contract is up and I can get my XDA unlocked.
Please, Sublimatica, can you tell me about how many months of contract O2 in UK will give the unlock code ?? here in France, it's 6 months ...for all operators .
I think the orange XDA-II only has 32MB of internal ram. If thats the case I'm glad I got mine with O2.
orange are confusing people
first it were released as the spv2020 then it changed name to m1000
and their page dont seem to mention specs like cpu and mem at all
http://orange.dk/nyspv/omspv2020
would suppose they would not be much help if you had an issue with your phone and wanted to solve it over the phone rather then sending the whole unit to them

I haven't tried, tenzin, but I think that we have two options in the UK:
1. We wait until our one-year minimum contract is finished, or;
2. We pay all the remaining monthly contract price in one amount and get an unlock code early.
Either way, as long as the service provider (O2 or Orange) get a year's worth of montly contract from us, they don't mind unlocking the handset.
Hey all.
recently got my XDA II mini and while trying to register at clubimate i get an error saying my IMEI is wrong.
clubimate supprt says i need to check with distributor (friend bought it in Thailand while on a trip before the tzunami so its not possible).
did anyone else came across this problem?
what can i do?
Thanks ahead...
I think that they mean that for support you need to go back to your distributor or sales outlet. The reason why your IMEI is not accepted is probably because it's an XDA Mini IMEI, and not an i-Mate JAM IMEI. DO not forget that the IMEI identifies the device al the way down to the company that sells them, in your case O2 (XDA), in other cases T-Mobile (MDA Compact) or Qtek (100s). They just limit access to iMate support to real iMate devices.
To be honest, I am not suprised, and actually I don't disagree with their policy. On clubimate they support devices that they have sold, not devices that have been sold by other companies. When I still had my MDA compact, I could not register at Club Imate either, but when I bought a real JAM, I could.
i actually do have an XDA2Mini.. not an imate device.
therefor, where can i get support? (updates/patch/whatever)
Thanks ahead...
http://myxda.com
is O2 Asia Support Site for patches etc.
Does anyone know when the XDA EXEC will release in Asia, esspecially in Indonesia?. Becoz I'm kinda sick with the Dopod 900 [its a baaad PDA]. And I'm affraid if the O2 in Asia only release the xda atom not the exec.
anyone could help me please??
As i understand, XDA Exec will not be release in Asia. The only vendor that will launch them is Dopod, as model 900.
Not exactly sure what you meant by Dopod 900 [is bad PDA], as XDA Exec = Dopod 900 = HTC Universal.
The only difference would be the bundled applications they may contained in the device, and of course the color.
Geez..
I've heard from someone that the EXEC will be release in Philipines on XMAS '05
It's gonna be sad if the O2 didn't release the EXEC in Asia, becoz many people are waitin for EXEC and not to buy the Dopod 900 [eventhough they are same HTC Universal]
Philipine is Asia, Indonesia too....
Just wait Info from seeo2.com (Now, only Officialy announced Xda Atom)
----
gw juga nunggu Exec koq, Bro.....
There is no O2 coverage in the Phillipines. Nor an O2 vendor. Not unless they just want to sell the phone, which is highly unlikely.
the o2 that sells the xda line of devices in asia is not a telco provider...they just sell devices.....
dopod 900 is a baaaad pda because they are selling it at a much higher price than o2 usually does....in case u dint know dopod is a part of HTC, and i think they are not allowing o2 asia to sell the devices, so dopod is the sole brand
Interesting. As far as I understand, Dopod 900 is the same as O2 XDA Exec and Dopod 900 is a bad machine just because of its high price...
Anyway, Dopod is a subsidiary of HTC and they're selling the machines in Hong Kong through a distributor called SiS. Dopod's price is quite expensive at the moment (USD 1064), but bear in mind that it comes with 1Gb SD Card and Dopod's bluetooth handsfree (though this Dopod bluetooth sucks).
Rumour has it that O2 is going to set up its own presence in Hong Kong and will also launch O2 XDA Exec in Hong Kong too. However, the price of O2 XDA Exec may even be higher than Dopod 900.....
If you really want the Exec instead of Dopod 900, do like what everyone do... Get someone in UK to get it for you or eBoy. I got mine from eBoy, yeah, had to pay premium, but with shipping it still costs less than the ugly looking Dopod.
O2 already confirmed that the Exec won't be launch in Singapore and the Universal been out for some time now, and still no news on seeo2.com, I highly doubt the Exec will be hitting Asia.
On the other hand, the manager at O2 HK service center told me personally that they will fix my Exec at a cost if I ever need service, but I'd imagine there's gonna be a long wait if I need any component replaced...
the price of the dopod in singapore is much higher than hk or anywhere else...i think htc is getting greedy....not letting o2 handle these markets, and charging a BIG premium for the devices.

for details
I think the distributor O2 devices in Indonesia,Malaysia, singapore,HK,Taiwan probably the same is the SiStech company
I've called the SiS company in Indonesia, and they said maybe they will launch the EXEC on January 2006. But they are not sure .
I hope many people in Indonesia didn't buy the dopod 900 so maybe they will release the EXEC in January 2006
dopod 900 is SUCKS eventhough the colour also SUCKS!!!
EXEC still the BEST
Since HTC manufactures the Tytn and it is a company based in Taiwan, would anybody know if it is available there?
How about the rest of Asia? any idea if it will be sold here? Thanks
You can buy it under the name "Dopod 838 Pro" from www.dopodasia.com, a HTC company
PS: I am always frustrated with the dutyfree prices in Asia, FYI and compare I paid 567 euros for mine, with 16% VAT and without contract (from www.gethandy.de ). Was recently at Taipei airport, forget about finding any Taiwanese electronic products there...
Thanks, for the information. Went to www.dopodasia.com/dopod and it is only available in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Unfortunately, no Philippines.
Would you know what ROM they use?

They use the dopod rom, it's available on the wiki:

Buy the Dopod CHT 9000 (From Taiwan or other import sources) and flash it to the English ROM. Mine is working perfectly so far.

Can you give me the website for the CHT 9000? Is it available in store in Taiwan? Thanks
Im sure you can find stores in Phil importing the TyTn. If not you can easily get a dopod asia from an online store from Singapore. Im in Hong Kong and i got mine that way.
For the record
CHT9000 is the Chunghwa Telecom branded version of the Dopod 838 Pro for Taiwan only.
Just browsing the net comparing the Trion and the Tytn (Dopod CHT 9000). Wow! There is a lot of difference in terms of design. The trion is much sleeker.

sir musta po?
it was actually the trion that lured me into the hermes craze but it's only been available in Germany and nowhere else apart from a few importers. i've got the m3100 instead.
in case you're not aware yet, there are 3 versions of the hermes, which all seem to be very identical apart from few visual differences and key layout
Hermes100 - SPV M3100, XDA Trion, Dopod 838pro, Imate Jasjam, Qtek9600
Hermes200 - HTC Tytn, Vodafone v1605, CHT 9000
Hermes300 - MDA Vario II
i'm not sure if its available in Phils yet (incl the grey markets) so best way to get one buy abroad. where are you based anyway? Canada?
i hope i got it right with the versions above, and hope this helps you.

+ qtek 9600

Buying the i-mate version of the MTeoR would be attactive for me, as it includes Videotelephony contrary to the HTC version (though WLAN is not built-in, which is the main reason, why I did not exchange my Qtek 8300 against the follower model - the MTeor isn't that cheap and one could expect WLAN - and also a much better cam, not just 1.3mpx).
However how to REALLY cheaply get hands on the i-mate make - SP JAS or how they call it ?
I simply do not know.
Though boasting on their homepage that they are somewhat a leader in smartphones you can only find their address in Dubai and not even other distributing partners or retailers.
I wouldn't go to Dubai just to buy an i-mate...
I know that dealers on Tottenham Ct. Rd. also have i-mate devices on stock, but England isn't really a cheap place to buy.
So only possibility would be to import one either from outside Europe (disadvantage: high import tax into the EU, relatively long handling period, problems with RMP) or the UK (disadvantage: no low retail proce).
None of these options is a good choice for me.

of course, the Qtek9600
thanks for the heads-up
you probably want to buy it in Taiwan from Chunghwa telecom. Just go to a local Chunghwa Telecom Location and they will likely have it.
I actually have an xda mini s and thinking of upgrading to a trion. Since I couldn't find it in Asia, where I'm based, I sought out the best alternative.
Right now, seems like the Dopod 838Pro (same as the CHT 9000). But still prefer the sleeker design of the Trion.
Both phones have the same features and functions, right?
HTC is making all of them, so the only difference is the cases of the different brands the Hermes/Tytn is sold under. An exception is the Cingular 8525 in the US, where Cingular requested from HTC to omit the videocam. And the voice command button on the left side is replaced by a PTT button (for Push to talk, not standard on WM5).
Anyone have any ida if the O2 Xa Trion will ever be sld in Asia?
Hi Hermes Owners!
--
Just wanted to know what variants of the Hermes are available in HKG. I'm on my way to HKG in 2 weeks and am looking to purchase a second PocketPC Phone.
--
I really fancy the HTC TyTn or dopod CHT 9000 but I like the HTC TyTn more because the CHT 9000 has Chinese characters on the thumb board which is a bit confusing if I'm going to use the device in English.
--
The dopod 838 pro is nice and all, but I like the look of the TyTn more.
--
So this is the question... are the TyTn and/or CHT 9000 available anywhere in HKG? If yes where can I get it and how much would it be? If they are not available is the 838pro already available, how much is it going for? Of course I'm asking about English OS devices please. Thanks in advanced for any info.

Regards from Manila
Pards,
Dopod838Pro, CHT9000 and O2 Trion are available in HK. Only the first is the official one (with local warranty) and widespread. All of them are available in English.
I like the O2 trion design, but I dumped mine since it has alignmnet issue and bought Dopod instead, whihc has the almost same design and with local warranty since I live in HK. But the Trion is cheaper...I dont like the HTC and CHT 9000 design...
Bummer no HTC TyTn... so you would suggest the 838pro over the other variants cause it has warranty. However I live in Manila so the Hong Kong warranty wouldn't really do me any good do you think I should wait for the 838pro to get to Manila it would probably take ages and be much too overpriced... We don't even have the 838 here yet officially [they are a lot in the tiangges of V-Mall, I even saw Cingular branded ones but brand new ones are so few]. How much did you get the 838pro there in Hong Kong?
I got the O2 a month ago for 5.2K and the dopod is now 6.1K (on 24 months installment) with 1GB uSD.
I heard that dopod838pro will be released in Manila this month..
Well I don't think they'd accept int'l cards for those installment deals [tried to purchase a notebook on installment last January at FORTRESS and I was told they don't accept int'l credit cards] so I'd have to pay cash I guess. Hmmm 6K for the Hermes... is it AKU3.0 already? I have AKU3.0 [by Ivan] on my Exec and am loving it... I just need a spare phone really but the HTC s620 still hasn't been announced and SAMSUNGs SGH-i607 is slated for an end of the year [possibly early next year release] so I was thinking why not get the Hermes first but 6K HKD is kinda steep for a spare phone, I tried using a v3i as a spare phone but missed the full sync that outlook and windows mobile does... if the 838pro will be out in Manila this month then I might see it here before I go to HKG on the 20th... hopefully they price it competitively. I hear the CHT 9000 is around 36,000 PhP in Taiwan but then again the chinese strokes on the keyboard are very confusing... oh my now I don't know if I should wait for the HTC s620, Samsung SGH-i607 or just get the Dopod 838pro. Also there has still been no additional leaks about the Universal successor [HTC Omni] which was mentioned a few weeks back, I was hoping to see even mock ups or planned specs atleast about that... anyway sectorlord thanks for all the great info really appreciate it.
I just saw the MDA T-Mobile Variants in Mongkok... sells for 4.8K ..
Wow, looks so sexy and the front keys layout and shape is the BEST of all the variants..
