I am using a 3G sim from my old AT&T phone, and in the Orbit2 I get a constant "H" is that correct?, video calls and such work.
Also Is there any dialer skins out for WM6 yet? I used to have one from zombienexus for the original Orbit.
When trying to install that it seems to just go underneath "sort to speak" of my current dialer skin??
Thanks,

check the forums on the dialer part. if u have a constant H then it could be that data is constantly being used.
I am connected to data. Just instead of of the "E" I get a "H" where most other people have said that they get "3G" icon. When I connecto to download or browse I get the small "H and the arrows". I am on Orbit 2 (US AT&T).

i have the same device (Orbit 2) on att and i get the "H" icon when downloading files, browsing the web and/or receiving email. sometimes it stays there for a few minutes and then it changes to "3G". if you're not getting the "3G" icon, it could be due to the older sim card. the only way to know is to test a newer card. by the way, did you purchase your O2 overseas or from a state-side retailer.

i found with push email set to have items show as they arrived it will show the H about 60% of the time. add internet browsing and all that and it is almost constantly on. never seen it go constantly on the H for more than a few min.
what kinda battery life are you getting with H data connection 60% of the time?
I get the 3g icon until it goes to data then it changes to H. then it seems to flip back to 3g after data transfer is done even though data connection still open.
where did you guys get your orbit2 from? cheaper than buying the polaris right?
H icon
Ok, I was using at first an older 3g Cingular sim, and it would only show "E" no matter if I was downloading or not. I then figured out that my acct, was not set up as UTMS.
The AT&T rep gave me a brand new AT&T 3g sim as of yesterday. Popped it in his phone and he was getting 3g. I put it into mine, still E. I got home and decided to do a hard reset, and the "H" came up after booted. The H icon is displayed just like the "E" was, and when downloading I get a little "H" with the arrows.
My phone never shows a 3G symbol! However I can video call, and have tested the download speed and it is fast. I have noticed considerable battery drain (read somewhere do to the lower freq). So now unless I need HPSDA speeds, I go into phone settings and take the band off Auto and set it GSM, and it goes back to the "E".
I bought the phone off a member on this forum, brand new and sealed.

i got mine via eBay UK for less than $660.00 US... i got mine before the exchange rates between the pound and the dollar when south. i paid a premium shipping price to have it shipped next day delivery. fortunately for me my purchase was financed via a "hefty" return on a SuperBowl bet!
yeah man. the pound and euro are trouncing the dollar. we're hurting bad. take your money and divide it by half if you go to london. you would think with such a sheisty exchange rate the deficit wouldn't be so bad. but i digress. the orbit2 is going from free to 249 pounds depending on the contract. that's a deal compared to buying it outright, oh well. at least we're getting better 3g speeds here. small consolation.

Hello, without meaning to sound like a complete idiot, can anyone tell me if I will automatically get 3G connection on my o2 account, or do I need to contact them to enable it.
Because every time I try to make a video call, the Exec tells me that 3G is not available.
Or do I need a new SIM Card?
They sent me a new SIM Card with the Exec, but I have not fitted it. Do you think that I need to insert and activate it?
Many Thanks in Advance
Fatzzz
I also got a new SIM card when my Exec arrived and I had to call O2 to get them to activate it. They said this would happen within several hours, but in fact it happened within 5 minutes. The old card stopped working at exactly the same time, so don't go out without them both once you've called them!
You can only make video calls when your phone has locked on to the 3G network. You'll know when this has happened because you'll see a 'U' symbol next to the phone signal strength icon instead of the 'G' for GPRS. (U stands for UTMS.) Or, go to the phone dialler pad and check the network name.
Most people seem to struggle to find a 3G signal though, so it might all be a waste of time. Certainly here in Sussex I haven't found a signal yet.
Thanks SiliconS, do you know if there is a special plan to subscribe to, or will it work as long as it is in a 3G area?
Cheers
Fatzzz
I contacted O2 today to ask the same question (as well as get my new plan confirmed).
I was advised that I would need a new sim, which has been ordered and should be sent out soon, and once that sim arrives, I need to contact O2 and get them to enable the new SIM and disable the old one.
What they then advised me is that 3G would be used whenever it is available.
It'll work in Liverpool where I work, but from what I've seen, St Helens, where I live, won't work just now but is planned for future expansion although there is no date.
To be honest I doubt I'll use it too much as I permanently activesync with my laptop via Bluetooth and use that as an Internet connection.
Once a decent push email solution has been delivered I'll probably rely on 3G a bit more.
In London, I get U everywhere I go, don't know about other areas. It was rather amusing when the train passed Hither Green the U changed to G for about 10 secs then switched back to U again. So does it mean the transmitter somewhere near Hither Green doesn't support 3G?
it could just be that the signal wasn't strong enough to support UTMS.
For example, if I go into the office at work I usually end up on GPRS, yet if I go near a window I can use UTMS just fine.
Hope this helps.

Check you O2 coverage
I am right on the edge of a coverage area however i am in dark blue but i get a very week signal from O2s UMTS network and a very strong signal from their GSM network.
I have real problems with using a data connection as i keep switching between the 2 networks and there is a delay while it does it. Also MSNM is really bad when it does this. At the moment i have set my Exec to just use the GSM network and ignore the UMTS one.
well I ordered a new sim from o2 to get 3g on my jasjar, and they sent me a normal gsm one (I didn't notice at the time, ended up hard resetting just to make sure I hasn't disabled it somehow!) So check when the SIM arrives that got 3G written on the side with the bubbles and not GSM! I infact ended up going to the O2 shop and getting one from there.

Hi, i currently live in toronto, canada, and i use rogers as my provider. when i put my sim card (from rogers) and turn on the phone, the phone says that it the network cannot find something (provider i think), and i should update my software. it then takes me to the "network connections" where i choose my country, and my provider. i notice that Canada is not in that drop down box. can someone please tell me how i can go about choosing Canada, or do i have to flash with a modded firmware instead of an original firmware? please answer!

Same thing happened here, I live in Brazil and it is not in the drop down list. I just choose dismiss (or something like that) as soon as the first message appears, followed by "do now show message again" (or smth like that).
Been using the phone without any problems so far.
oh yea? ok t hats cool. do you think you can help me out then..
i dont understand what 3G EDGE GPRS are.. like because im with the provider, i do not want to be charged more than just calling people.
when i plug in my sim card, do you know what is supposed to be displayed on the top of the dopod, near the Signal strength?
and could you tell me what each of those three mean? thankss

Answer:
3G-Video calling using the secondary camera (which we can't use yet in canada)
EDGE- Basically high speed data transfer (since you are with rogers, I believe there are data plans that support that feature)
GPRS-Never use it, cuz it charges on your airtime using the towers

ok, then normally if i dont want to be charged with anything other than having signal strength and making calls, what normally shows near the signal strength? i guess my question really is: if i dont want EDGE, 3G or UTMS or anything, what should i be seeing beside the signal strength?

You can call Rogers and tell them you don't want any data services, then you should see a X icon right beside your signal strength level...
Ok when i put it in it says:
Network Wizard
Your current operator (30272) is not supported. You should obtain an update from your device vendor.
Would you like to select another network provider?
I want to put canada in it.. if anyone knows how to do it please post!!

Oh really?? Is that the 3G will be available to all Canada customers or just a few cities only?
But I cannot see this announcement in the Rogers website though.

Agreed. I disabled all data way back when I had a regular phone. I kept getting random data charges when I never loaded my browser so I just disabled it. Anyway, I get the 3G logo, however, I haven't tested out the transfer rates or anything like that. I don't know if you can boost the signal or anything, I manage to make calls (which are surprisingly perfectly clear) with 1 bar.
I get the Edge logo on my phone in vancouver. I do know that they charge for Edge usage here and there was a big promo for unlimited Edge usage for about $40 bucks per month posted on craigslist.com. I know 3G network has been built, but probably a few good years before it's affordable to use.
Hi
New poster on these forums (I found this forum using a Google Search).
Preordered my X1a from Sony Style on Nov 14th, received it via Fedex c. 11 am today.
Phone still doesn't have a full charge but it hasn't stopped me playing with it. Only had it for half a day and so far phone seems great.
Two queries for those who have the X1a:
1. Do you have trouble getting the battery cover off? I couldn't get it off following the instructions (squeeze side of battery cover then lift it off). I had two other work colleagues try and finally one of them managed to get it off. But I now have a 16GB microSDHC card I want to slot in and I can't get the battery cover off even when applying force
Is there a trick to this?
2. According to the phone manual, you should get a 3G icon on Windows Mobile if connected to 3G. I only get the H icon - HSDPA and EDGE download speeds, which is disappointing.
I live in the New York Metro area. I don't know if the problem is I only have a normal GSM SIM card (I just joined AT&T 4 days ago and specifically asked for a 3G card and they assured me that's what I had) or if there's a problem with the phone or the settings on the phone.
I've checked the network section under Comm Manager - chosen both Auto settings and manually specifying UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900) under the Band and I'm still not getting 3G connectivity.
Anyone else have the X1a but get 3G speeds with AT&T? If so, where do you live?
Thank you for your responses.
Apologies for double-posting - please ignore my second query regarding 3G / HSDPA. I've since done more research and realised that getting the H icon is good since HSDPA means I'm on UMTS. I was being ignorant.
That just leaves the query regarding the battery cover. I still can't get it off!

HSDPA is 3G...3G merely stands for 3rd generation. AT&T's implementation of 3G is HSDPA while Verizon's is EVDO for example. EDGE is 2.5G
The battery is tough! You have to get a finger nail into one side and pull upwards hard then do the same on the other. People made it seem easy, but it is quite difficult indeed.
Thank you for both your responses. contaygious - following your instructions I finally managed to get it off using a screwdriver
Hi All,
Done a quick search on this and can't find anything relevent, but i apologise if a thread already exists.
Really a question for those in the UK on the t-mobile network. Have any of you attempted to sign up for the orange 2g roaming service yet? I signed up, recieved the confirmation text, replied to it, and received the final confirmation. However, I'm not sure it's working. The signal seems no stronger, and i still drop in my house.
Obviously i'm posting this in the android section because i'm running android myself and am wondering whether anyone in the same boat has managed to get roaming to work. Should the fact that we're on a non-official OS running off the sd card make a difference?
Oh and for completeness, i'm running shubcraft 1.5 rmnet.
Cheers fellas!
I'm quite happily flip flopping between Orange while at work and T-Mobile for everything else...
works like a charm for me though you do have to stick the phone into Airplane mode after selecting the different provider for the data to work ...

Many thanks for the reply Jezwick. So, just for clarity, you're manually selecting each provider as and when required? Because i can do that, i think. When i select orange though, whilst it registers with the network fine, i get a little "R" above the signal bar (any ideas what that means?) And the speed appears to be limited to Edge. Orange have a very strong signal round here, so i figure i should be getting GPRS really.
It's the auto-switching i'm not totally sure is working really. Is there any explicit indicator that it's flipping on it's own? Or do you just observe a generally better 2g signal, rather than say, a very weak 3g one? Round the house, my phone is still trying to make do with 1 or zero bars of 3g. I would have hoped it would flip over to orange more or less all the time under those circumstances. Nothing to stop me manually selecting it i guess though...

The R is indeed for roaming that's the way it works if your not on your 'own' network.. The 'flipped' service will currently only work at GRPS speeds at the moment but should be 3G by the new year
I have noticed mine flipping automatically but only once or twice in the last few weeks but only when I get NO signal from the current service.

Understood - thanks for the info Just done some reading and apparently EDGE is faster than basic GPRS. For some reason, i'd always assumed the reverse. Looks like the best option is just to have it always on orange whilst at home and use wifi for data (which i do anyway to compensate for the poor signal). Cheers!
Hi all,
I have an O2 streak running Stephen 1.1.1 ROM. The phone is unlocked with Rebel sim to work on orange.
I am having very bad 3G connection. I am in a very well covered area and never had any problem with my old HTC touch HD.
There are 50% of times that I cannot connect to the net work. Then I have to reboot the phone for it to work, sometimes more than once. When it connected, the 3G sign turned into H and I can enjoy the full speed. But when the webpage loads and there is no traffic, the H turned back into 3G and it will take forever to reconnect if it will ever connect.
I don’t think the setting is wrong as I never changed anything. I tried following combo
Dell streak + rebel + orange sim = don’t work,
Dell streak + rebel + 3 sim = work
It doesn’t look like there is something wrong with the streak of rebel. Then I tried to put the orange back into my orange touch HD
Touch HD + orange sim = work
Touch HD + rebel + orange sim = work
So now it’s one possibility, orange sim doesn’t work with phones from other network? Is this even possible? Is anyone else been using Dell streak + rebel + orange sim combo can give me some feedback?
Many thanks.
I just thought maybe that Orange's coverage was a bit crap in my area but I've been getting really really poor data service with Orange. I've got an unlocked direct from Dell unit and I was originally on O2 and I could get almost full phone service and full data while in my room in my house (on the outskirts of town and not in the middle of no where), but then I got an Orange contract and thats just gone down the pan. Now in my room I get half phone service and even worse data which seems to only sometimes connect to 3G, all other times its just G, and when it does go 3G, it's really slow and sometimes just non responsive.
So I have no idea whether this is a compatability issue or just poor coverage, though it seems that Oranges network does need to pickup what phone your using so they can register it on their network (so they can issue you a 3G sim instead of a normal 2G sim, which was a joke when my 3G sim card died after the first day of recieving it, only for them to replace it with a 2G one and then refused to replace it with a 3G one, so I had to kick off and insist that they replace like for like....but thats another story) so it could be that since they can't register your phone on the network that you don't have full access to their data service....just a thought!

The coverage is not the problem as I live in a well covered area. The signal is always 3 or 4 bars.

This looks like the problem. As when the phone trying to connect, I can always see upload traffic but most of times no download traffic. Even when it connects, it taking much longer than it should be (when the sim is in orange touch HD or using a 3 sim).
Do you have any idea how can I solve this? Is there anything orange can do if I hassle their customer service?
I have no idea my friend, you'll just have to try. I thought maybe it was a signal issue as I am able to get it working (not at full speed but still working) when I'm out in the open in towns or cities. At the moment, I'm just guna wait a while until they have fully intergrated with T-Mobile as they are in the middle of setting up the merge of their masts. I did question that my data service has been crap compared to when I was on O2 and they just enabled me to connected to the T-Mobile masts when I can't connect to any Orange ones, but that doesn't really help not being able to use their data service properly.
The only reason why I'm using Orange is because of the amazing deal I got and that I actually get a phone signal while I'm at work (out in the middle of no where, where as with O2, I could only get 1 or 2 bars until I picked the phone up at which point I would lose it all)
me too, don't want to leave orange as I can't get my current deal anywhere else. I probably just have to get use to the bad connection.
