helo can any one comfirm if the xda atom is quad band or only triband
i see ppl says it work on gsm 850 but in gsmarena says its only triband
its simliar to the htc touch says is triband but ppl says its quad band

From what I know, the Atom is Tri Band and lacks 850Mhz. Unless they released an updated version, they are all like that and there is none with 850.
I am sure that you can get service still, I know I can get GPRS and EDGE with AT&T but it is limited.
A lot of O2's phones lack 850, which is unfortunate. My Atom Life lacks 850 but has 1900 for 3G
and that makes up for the lack of 850 for the most part.

guys i am smewat new to the terminology of GSM but could anyone tell me what exactly does UMTS mean.the specs of the exec says that it is GPS/GPRS 900/1800/1900 UMTS(2100) compatible. does this make it incompatible with normal 900/1800/1900 networks. mainly i am plannin to get one which i ll use in India where this model has not been yet launched. could smeone tell me if it would work there (it comes under the 900/1800/1900 GSM countries).

It is both GSM 900/1800/1900 AND WCDMA 2100, so it's a quad band phone and can be used with ANY of those four bands (three for GSM and one for WCDMA/UMTS).
In short, it will work in India!
Its already available in India officially from i-mate for Rs 65k and for Rs 55k from Heera Panna and other retailers.

The answer is right in your post. 1700mhz = AWS.
So 900/AWS/2100 = 900/1700/2100
The tmobileUSA HD2 is dual-band UMTS while the Nexus is tri-band UMTS.

Different frequencies serve better for different uses. Low frequencies, such as 450 MHz NMT, serve very well for countryside coverage. GSM 900 (900 MHz) is a suitable solution for light urban coverage. GSM 1800 (1.8 GHz) starts to be limited by structural walls. UMTS, at 2.1 GHz is quite similar in coverage to GSM 1800.
Higher frequencies are a disadvantage when it comes to coverage, but it is a decided advantage when it comes to capacity.
Switching between these should be handled automatically - the device will select the frequency with the strongest signal if multiple frequencies are available in that cell, or alternatively, the frequency that has capacity for more users.
I don't think there's a way to manually switch between frequencies.
Not sure how it works overseas but here in the UK different frequency bands are reserved for carriers. For example, O2 and Vodafone (and their subsidiaries) both run on the 900MHz band, whilst T-Mobile and Orange run on the 1800MHz band.
The phone will still support the other frequencies, but only if sim-unlocked and a compatible network SIM used.
So if you had a voda DHD and unlocked it and put an Orange SIM in, then it would run on the 1800MHz band.
Obviously this only applies to 2.5G - not quite so up to speed on 3G frequencies.
If the band you require isnt supported by your model of DHD then there is no way to change it, as radio frequences are hard coded into the cpu chipset

Well, you can dial *#*#4636#*#* and select phone information. There you'll find the information you need.
About switching to a different band. Not possible. All you can do is prefer WCDMA or GSM. You can't force your phone to work on 1800 even if your operator supports both 900 and 1800. Usually they have the signaling channel on 900 for better coverage and use 1800 only when you are close enough to the base station, so you won't take precious 900 resources if making a call. WCDMA is very similar. If you are close enough the network prefers you being on the higher 3G frequencies, so 2G stays available for anyone who for some reason is unable to connect to the 3G.

As far as I know, excluding the US carrier specific variants, the unlocked HTC Ones comes in either a HSPA+ 850/900/1900/2100 MHz variant, or an HSPA + LTE 1800 (only) variant.

Is that from HTC's official website? the specs on its UK page don't have LTE at all listed for the unlocked device.
Mobicity's the only one at present selling an unbranded/unlocked LTE enabled variant:
Network Band: 4G/LTE 1800, GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, 3G 850, 3G 900, 3G 1900, 3G 2100
So yeah, it's all a bit confusing at the moment. Damn expensive at mobicity, i must say.

what upsets me is that there's no unifying LTE handset... I don't want an american version from AT&T... I want an unlocked version that does away with the carrier garbage...

Well qualcomm is releasing a new chip later this year that solves that problem.

On one hand, I'm glad HTC acknowledged this and I've have been put out of my misery. On the other, I want to do a facepalm at HTC.
I understand how 850MHz testing of the European model could have been deprioritised. And I still believe HTC should be supported for coming out with a great phone at a time of trouble (possibly as many articles on their profit report as phone reviews!), but boy are they making it hard for themselves. They are not a new company. What's different about this phone vs the other internationally available in different variants phones they've released?
I have a quiet chuckle every so often about the saga of getting this phone. Excitement, delay, delay, worry about 850MHz support, dispatch!, oh what it won't work?!?, return, wait for local launch, to be continued...
You wouldn't happen to know what type of NFC it has?
Looked at GSM arena, no where does it go in to any depth on the NFC...

I'm in the same position here, buggered cos i was so excited. Plus only being able to realise this in the last day or so, now i'm probably now at the end of a very long wait list on the Harvey Norman preorders.

Other thank the UK variant not having 850mhz HSDPA frequency all bands from 2g to HSPA should be compatible worldwide.

It has the NXP PN544 chip with its usual level of support it seems. Unlike the S4, it should therefore support Mifare tags without issues.
