Accessing Extended ROM - P3300, MDA Compact III upgrading etc.

Hi
Im not a newbie but I think this is a bit too advanced for me without some help. I have just bought some software and it says to do this:
"If you are an advanced user and know how to access the extended ROM of your device then this section will inform you how to install remotePROTECT automatically following a hard reset.
Copy the setupE file from \Program Files\remotePROTECT into the extended ROM, place the appropriate remotePROTECT.CAB (Pocket PC2003, Windows Mobile 5.0 or Smart Phone 5.0) file in the same directory (this is on the
PC where the install took place C:\Program Files\sCPsOFT\remotePROTECT v1.5\<SP5 or WM5 or PPC2003> RemotePROTECT.XXX.CAB )
The setupE file contains your current SIM information (IMSI number) so after the reinstall will automatically look for that SIM in your device, if your device has been stolen , the SIM changed and then hard reset then you are still protected and the device will automatically LOCK and send a SMS to the predefined number.
The setupE is encrypted and therefore is safe to keep on your PC for future use."
Can anyone help me to do this please.
Thanks

You can reflash the RSU on the SX56

OK. This will have to be short and by memory but the good news is the details are all here in the forums. Thanks to everyone for the bits, I just stitched them together after spending hours of experimenting with my useless SX56.
After using the PPC 2003 on my ATT SX56 for a number of months I decided to dump it and go back to the PPC2002 version. I had problems with battery life, ring volumn, reception, dropped calls and some of my application would not work.
I was successful in using the ATT SX56 upgrade on the Siemens site once. I did it a second time because I was unsure if some binaries got loaded (it appears that this image does not have the standard ActiveX controls which I got elsewhere).
During the second install everything went wrong. I was left with a dead PPC with no useful ROMS. Period. All I could get to load was the Wallaby 5.15 bootloader.
So this is what I did. Note only try this as a last resort before sending in your PPC PE to Siemens for a reflash as I was about to do. This may work for other carriers but you will need their versions of the files mentioned here.
ONLY DO THIS IF YOU ARE GOING TO THROW YOUR PPC AWAY
Brain Dead PPC with GSM Error and no ActiveSync
First you will need a SD reader/writer for your PC and and SD card. This first step will give you a somewhat usable ROM for the PPC side. We will deal with the GSM side in a bit.
First get hold of the Siemens PPC 2002 update and install it on your PC. (it will probably fail to your PPC since if you are reading this ActiveSync won't work, if it does you probaly don't need to read this thread)
It will probably hang on the warning screen. If it does just go to the task manager and end it. All you want at this point is the files anyway. They will be installed in Program Files\SX56 Upgrade utility
Get a clean SD card and copy the NK.nbf file from the english subdirectory to the card. Stick the card in your PPC SD slot and get the bootloader running. (soft reset + volumn button). It will load a new ROM into memory after you select the action (rocker switch at bottom of PPC).
After this you can softboot the PPC. It will probably ask to reformat the SD card. Let it do that as you don't need the NK file anymore and you will need a clean SD card.
PPC without Start Icon and no GSM
Now your PPC won't have a start icon and you will also not be able to use the pointer as the PPC will not have performed setup. Don't even try. All you can do is bring up the contacts and calendar to frustrate you.
Next we will get the repair.zip file (search for it in the forums). While it is made for the XDA we will use it only to give us back a functional PPC. Follow the instructions to copy the subdirectory and file to the SD card and reset the machine.
1% Problem
You will now find yourself at the famous 1% problem but you will have a Start icon again, which is a good thing.
Do not acknowledge the error by selecting OK. Let it be there but instead sneak behind and hit the start icon. Bring up the file manager and go to the windows/startup folder. Delete upgrade program. Do a softboot.
Working PDA but no Radio Stack
Now you will have PPC again but it will be slow and you will have no radio stack yet. Now to fix that. Go to your PC in the SX56 upgrade/english directory and copy these four files to the Windows directory on your PPC.
monitor_ul_bs.m0, monitor_ul_bs.map, RSUpgrade.exe, RSUpgrade.cp64.
Once copied leaving your PPC in the charging cradle run RSUpgrade.exe from the PPC windows directory. It should upgrade all your ROMS and you should be back in business.
The only file I could not update was the rilgsm.dll. It was locked and would not let me mess with it or copy another on top of it. Perhaps another attempt at the upgrade program would fix this but I am gun shy right now and I have a working system again.
Chris
Dear Chris,
THanks for your clearly poitining out steps to fix the phone. Can you please help me where to download the repair.zip. or drop my email: [email protected].
Thanks!

Custom ROM for Pocket PC

Hi
Sorry if this post is not in the right place. I am in great need of help. I am a mobile software developer. A client who is into automation contacted me. The client has a control application that he would like to start up whenever the pocket pc starts. This itself is not a problem, since you can simply create a registry key to handle this. The problem comes in that the application must still start even if the battery has been drained completely and the device start like it does after a hard-reset.
From what I have read, it is possible to create a custom ROM image that contains the key described above. The application could be stored in the backup storage area of the ROM.
I have looked at tools to edit the .nbf files that are available with the ROM updates for the pocket pc from the manufacturer (HP iPAQ running WM2003SE), but I cannot find a clear answer, and my knowledge of Unix is bad at best.
Any help and suggestions from anyone on how to edit the .nbf file or any other method to manage this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

2 questions?

Hi guys I have 2 questions,
1: I have a MDA Compact 2 that has customised firmware by my employer, some application automatically install when its first turned on after a reset , I have just bought a second one as a spare, is there a way of cloning the firmware from the first one to the new spare?
2: is there a way of using the MDA as a Modem on my pc? We have web and talk but wool prefer to get internet via my laptop?
thanks
1. What brand are you in? T-mobile German, Czech? Which one?
2. Flash wm6, there is an easy way of sharing the MDA Compact II internet connection for PC.
its T-Mobile UK, i cant risk going to WM6 becuase of the mod's by my employer, it runs custom software.
If its been modified by extended rom only to install custom software/settings etc then you can just use Total Commander and browse to \Extended_Rom\ then copy all the files out of it. then on the other device, skip the original customization by soft reseting when its says its about to start, then install the list of extracted cabs from the business device.
For a bit more involved, you can take all the extracted files, build them into an image and then flash them to the other device overwriting the tmobile stuff so they'll always be on there.
If you pair the laptop with the phone, it should detect the presence of a bluetooth modem (not on AKU 3+ tho) which you can then use on the laptop as a new connection dialling *99#
Hi thanks for the reply, I have followed the instructions from here,
http://www.htcwiki.com/page/Use+my+MDA+as+a+Modem?t=anon
but I am having a problem, when it says select access point name I do have any to chose, it just says none?
Any ideas
i have tryied ot on none but it dont work
I think its general.t-mobile.uk
but it wont let me type anything in?

Windows Mobile 5 Frozen today screen

hi,
I replaced the shellres.96.dll with a modded one and now I can't see a startbutton on my windows mobile 5 device and i can't click anything on the today screen. I have a backup of the original file but I have no idea how to put it back in the windows folder since I can't do anything on the device.
i could really use some help on how to put the original file back in its place.
Jochen
Make a Hard-Reset, it will revert device memory to original state.
i removed the battery and turned the switch behind the battery to off and to on again and still its the same
EDIT: when i plug it into my pc i can hear the new hardware sound and after a while theres a win ce network error wich i normaly also get on the devices screen. my device is a Medion MD96710
Okay, if you can browse your device with your computer, DELETE modified file from \Windows directory, then restart your device. The file will be restored from the ROM.
i can't browse it with the windows explorer and its not connected in the "windows mobile device center" (don't know wether it's called like that or not in english because thats my translation from german) so i think active sync isn't running
EDIT: the problem is solved i found out how to really do a hard reset on the device and now it works just fine thanks for your help

[Q] Windows Mobile 5 fullscreen app

Hi All
recently bought a Motorola MC7094 off eBay... it has arrived and has some software installed that starts at boot up, it starts in full screen and i cant get out of it!
can anyone think of a way round this. i want to format the PDA but to do that i need to put the 'cleaner' files in the correct place on the PDA and i cant get to file explorer to do that. even going through browsing from my PC i cant get to the 'Temp' folder to put the cleaner files in there...
any help would be appriciated.
thanks
Bobro
You could try the Hard Boot key sequence from its successor the MC70. It is almost the same device.
Performing a Cold Boot - Hard reset ----- Simultaneously press the Power button and the 1 and 9 keys.
If it works, it will wipe the device to its original state at manufacture. Any software installed since will be lost. It should then boot up to the standard Windows Mobile 5/6 screen.
Solved
Thanks for the reply...
I have worked it out, you can create a folder on the PC called Temp and put the cleaner files in this folder... you can then paste this folder into the root of the PDA from 'My computer' (this folder was not visable but when pasting it askes if you want to overwright the folder. once this temp folder is on the PDA you can then do a hard reboot of the PDA. 1+9+power, it will say you need to connect AC power, once you dock the PDA again it will start the factry reset
