Hi all ... I got a new battery for my Universal and it worked fine for few weeks. Then I got a new device (Kaiser) and I no long use my old one for about 3 months. When I tried to use the Universal again I discovered that the charging led is always off and when I remove the battery it turns on in red ... I 'm sure it's a battery issue coz when I put the old battery back the charging led goes on.
so, the question is: could be the battery dead bcoz I didn't use the device for few months ? ... and if so, how can I fix it ?
TIA
This is a somehow "tough" question, answer is not easy without inspecting the battery electrically, but, with a multimeter you could check the battery's voltage, check it, it should not be too low (above 2.5V), if it's lower, try to fully recharge it (leave it on charge inside the phone at least one night).
Universal does three things when the battery is discharged:
If it has been fully discharged, it might show the red led for a couple of minutes (while the battery acumulates enough energy to begin the boot), or stays red when the battery is missing.
Orange led (in charge) or nothing for a couple of minutes, then orange (this might be your case), it means that the battery is not dead but the device is booting and while the system returns to "idle" it cannot give you any indication of charge (because you need a "idle" state to have such message).
After so much words, it might be more convenient just to buy another battery, with today's prices...
thx so much for all this info .. actually in my case the led is always off when the new battery is inserted .. it goes in orange with the old battery ... so, im sure the charging circuit is ok ... I just wonder what happened to this new battery which have not been used except for few weeks
it might just be dead, poor quality batteries are the most commond these days, even more if you bought it thorugh Ebay.

Everything was just fine until yesterday when i realized the batterty's built-in monitor wasn't reading a real batt stat. I was sure I was running out of charge and the divice was still saying there was 50% left. I did a soft reset and my atom didn't boot. I took the battery off and waited more than 3 hours, put it back and couldn't boot. I haven't ever done anything to my mobile. No register tweacks, fisical hits or rom upgrades. I searched the web and found a procedure to get it back. Reset+camera choose 1 option and there you go with your device booting at last. I did so but when it ended whith the system loading proces it sent a notification saying that the battery was exhausted and it went off. Again it couldn't boot in a normal way even with the ac adaptor plugged in. I made sure the battery was fully charged. I did a bootloader again (reseat+camera) with the usb connected and i could get it back again but showing 0% battery indicator and would turn off as soon as i unpluged it. I tested the battery with a multimeter and even when it was fully charged i tried to recharge it until green light then i turned it on and the batt monitor was 100%. I could unpluged the usb and everything was fine. It didn't turn off but the indicator got stock in 100%. After an hour or so of normal use i was sure the battery was 90% or less while it was still indicating 100% of charge. I did a soft reset and couldn't boot again. I think the device knows when the battery is 100% charged but when it is less tha 100% and i do a soft or cold reseat the mobile thinks the battery is 0% and won't boot.
Yes, I have ugraded to ROM Xda-Atom-Exec-ENG-20060721-MOT0822 to see if this fixes it but now i have a rom-upgraded aton exec with the same fatal error.
I am at work rigth now and hopping my atom doesn't need a soft reset because if so i need to plug it in in order to be able to do a reseat+camera and wait some minutes until green ligth shows up. My atom knows 0% or 100% of battery charge but no numbers in beetwin.
Any ideas?
did you charge the battery for 8 hours on first use, continuing to discharge battery completely first three charges?
This is crucial for battery performance I now get at least three days of moderate usage and at least 7 days in standby, my advice is go buy a new battery follow the instruction manual completely, failing any changes (be sure to buy battery from somewhere you can get refunded) return the battery. Try also reflashing using bootloader mode, not using the SD card!
The last time i used bootloader was after hard reset a no card inside then i performed the last ROM upgrede available from O2. It seems to be a hardware problem more than a software problem as i thought at the begining.
I hope you are rigth, i guess the device gets charge information from the battery and the battery is telling it when it is 100% and 0% when it is under 100% and after a soft or cold reset. I am going to drain the battery all the way down and recharge it up to green light to see what happens. By the way i did not charge the battery 8 hrs when new.
Where do you think my atom is geting the batt charge information? From one of its inside sensors or from batt circuits?
Thaks for your advice.
I mean reflash using bootloader mode, ie. enter bootloader then plug in USB and run DSUU installer from your PC. Its hard to say where the fault lies, some Atom's had power management issues and O2 are fully aware of it, if yours is still under warranty I suggest sending it to a service center but be prepared to be without it for at least a month! (should change their name to SLOW2) and also be prepared to have it returned to you only to find they havent done a damn thing!
Its a bad battery, same thing happened to me. Just return it for a new one, the material is moulded with the smart chip inside there is no way to fix it.
Now my battery is beetwin 100% and 85%. I have searched other forums and i found out it is definitly a battery issue. It has been more than 6 months since i bougth my Atom so i have no more battery garanty. I thing i am going to wait before i buy a new one in orther to get the most of it since it still last more than 2 days.
Thanks for the information.
when a battery xp-02 (for atom family) is sometime stop at certain percentage, says 72% for long time, i do a soft reset and it drops to says 40%, is it a symptom of bad battery? or it is a ROM problem?
I think I may have a faulty battery (hoping it's not a problem with the phone itself). The battery seems to hold it's charge ok but when it has completely run out of charge or is close to running out, I have a lot of problems getting it to charge up.
If the phone is turned off, the orange light comes on but then goes off again after about 10 minutes and the battery still shows 0% when I turn the phone on to check progress. I have to remove the cable, then remove the battery for at least 5 mins, turn the phone on and while it is booting up, do a soft reset. I then insert the cable as the phone is booting up and after a while the orange light comes on and the phone starts to charge. It takes ages to charge and when it has got to about 20%, I then turn off the phone and it then charges the remaining % fairly quickly. It only gets to 99% though....
I am pretty sure (like 99.9%) that it is just the battery as my son has the same phone. We have swapped chargers - no difference. We then swapped batteries - my phone worked fine and his wouldn't charge! However, when I went in the Orange shop they were insistant that I had to send the phone back as well, which I really don't want to do as I haven't got a spare phone (even a brick).
Unfortunately, as I have just lost my job, I don't want to have to buy a new battery as they are about £25 but I guess I will have to.
What do people think - is it just a faulty battery? Has anyone else had this issue with their phone - i.e is it a known problem?? Hope someone can help...
I guess no-one bothers to answers questions from newbies then....
idd, i feel the same way..
but i think your battery is dead, don't have much experience about that subject but when you exchange the battery with someelse and then his phone acts weird to, look no further.
This doesn't look good to me. I had my phone tethered to my laptop while I slept which I do often with no problems. Today I got up and saw the LED was blinking orange and green. I looked and the battery was down to 11% even though the status bar showed the battery as being fully charged.
I popped the battery out and in, tried again, same thing.
When I plug it in the LED stays solid orange for about 5 seconds and then stats blinking.
I tried it on the OEM charger with phone turned both on and off.
It doesn't appear to be charging and the LED's are blinking green, orange.
Does this seem like a bad battery? I live in the US so accessories are hard to get, I don't have a spare battery to test yet.
What do you suggest? I have a new battery coming but it's going to take a while before it shows up.
I had that too for a minute. I suspected a faulty charge / sync cable, swapped it out, and never saw these LEDs again.
Had that too. I'm using a second non OEM Battery, I will try it with the original and give feedback.
I had that with my small charging-cable (non OEM) in my car.
I've tried multiple cables. I'm hoping the battery is the culprit. I have another one on the way but it's literally on a slow-boat from China. If it's not the batter then it's the phone and that's no good. Doesn't charge on, off or in bootloader mode. I've read all the threads and it really could be either. Fingers crossed.
My LED was blinking orange/green too
I was using a non-standard (cheap) battery when this suddenly occurred. Changed to original battery and everything was OK again. Seems like the original batteries are best after all (even if they cost ten times more in my country).
Think that too. My Original Battery works well. The Battery from China is "blinking" sometimes for about 15 minutes.
same or even worst problem
During the first day i buy the phone and charge for 10hour, after that i switch on my phone i was shocked my phone wasn't charge at all but the indicator light show from orange to green.
so i charge my phone for the second time, this time its show 100%. i browse the phone setting and function all that less than 30min and before i sleep it was left 70plus % and after i wake up its left with 20plus % and the timing from i sleep to wake up less than 5hr. my wifi ,gprs bluetooth 3g everything is off except the alarm.
now i charge my phone for the third time after charging for 8hr i switch it on and it did charge but only 20plus % and i continue charge my phone for the forth time. i sucessful switch on the phone and its show 100% but it suddenly turn off, i was shock don't know what went wrong i try switch on the phone and its show the phone is low battary.
so i charge it again and the indicator light turn green less then 1min and my phone becoming weird i can't charge and switch on. once awhile it can be turn on.
so i try charging it again and the phone keep on restart.
i got so fedup as the phone is a brand new set and use it for less then 1 week. i'm going to get it fix tomorrow.
anyone with the same problem or know anything when wrong can help pls.
Hard reset helped me + check if a cable is deep enough in the phone
i try already its still the same. do u have the same problem.
i was charging my phone 2 day ago, and listening to music and downloading a lot of mb from internet with wifi, and i putted it under my pillow
after about 2 or 3 hour i pulled it out and saw the orange and green blinking
my phone was like a fire stone, it had a very bad result, the lcd doesn't had touch sensitive anymore
after 2 hour the sensitivity came back, but the story didn't finish yet.
after that, every time i charge this phone, the lcd sensitivity goes off,and after i cool it down, sensitivity comes back
but now while i'm sending this message, the half of screen doesn't have any touch sense what is your suggestion for me???
I had the same issue with my original battery - turned out that the middle pin in the battery connector had been bent when I swapped batteries - I straightened the pin back to normal position and now it charges fine again.
Jon
i am having this problem too. the led is blinking and the battery is not charging. i am forced to use a cradle to charge it up.
The orange and green blinking on charge happened to me a couple of times. In all instances the phone was too hot due to having it covered or temperature of the room was also too hot. Allowing it to cool made it work again. I haven't suffered from this problem ever since I started keep it well ventilated. Hope this helps.
yup. i google for it. and notice it due to overheat. i tried with air con on. it seem working well.
but for me. i cant feel any overheat (like hot/heat on my device when it start blinking.
hide.
The blinking light is the phone saying its overheating
this happened to me but the worst thing was I could of bought a 1500mAh battery from Hong Kong for something like £5/6 but i decided to buy one from my own country the UK and i read that an extended type was the best so i bought an extended 1350mAh for £7.99 thinking i would have no issues but its with this new battery that it overheats if i am charging via wall or pc and using my phone!
using tbattery it says the battery is only a 1230mAh anyway!!
but with my original battery i can charge and use at the same time so kinda annoyed i thought i was paying more to get better but i guess i live and learn
so now i have ordered an 1600mAh for my phone for £5.99
i should just use it as a backup battery .
p/s : what is the average battery temperature ?

I bought 2 batteries from eBay. The cheap Hong Kong one does this at 60%. The other one was from the UK and claims to be the real thing, and it charges all the way to 100% and has given me no problems (it's the one I've been using for the last 30 days).
Moral of the story: Buy official batteries.
Hi all,
a few days ago I`ve got the same issue. Please don`t laugh, but sollution I`ve found is really funny.
Firstly I was trying to flash different ROMs, Radios with no luck. Trying to clean battery contacts and phone contact pins, especially the middle one, with no luck again.
Then, thinking logically ( ), I`ve found what changes occure to my phone. I didn`t flash a new ROM, didn`t intall any new software and so on before the charging become naughty. The only thing that changed was the temperature around, now here is hot like in hell: about +30C. So I plugged in portable charger and put it with my hd2 into refrigirator (changed it to maximum t to avoid any inconvenience) into low humidity container. In a few hours battery stated was shown as 100%. The next time I was trying to charge it again in the room, but got only blinking led, had to put it back into refrigirator
Seems that battery or phone has a temperature sensor, which stops charging when batt t raises above safe level. I believe sometimes this sensor fails or smth like that and charging can be stopped even when t is not so high..
Hi guys!
I know, that there are some threads about the topic, but i think, here it is a bit different...i´ll describe:
Everything was OK with my withe G1, since I forgot to recharge the battery, and the G1 switched off. I wanted to recharge it, but - you know- the red led light blinked...i read different threads etc, and then I decided, to buy a new battery. The new battery arrived yesterday, and I put it in my G1, tried to switch it on, and it worked. I was quite happy! I taped it on the charging unit, and the first problem: the battery display didnt moved, it remained at 23%, also after a few hours at the charging unit. I knew the problem, because it was the same with my old battery, but it doesnt interest me, because the battery recharged, only the battery indicator showed that not. I thought OK, dont thinked about it, and waited. Today: I took my G1, yes, battery display at 23%, no problem. I switched it off and after a few hours I wanted to switch it on. Second problem - F**K! The red led light blinked...and now, the battery doesnt recharge at all. The G1 works now only, if the charging unit is put on it, if I remove it, the G1 switchs off. Its the same behavior with the old battery.
I dont know what to do now, because i dont think, that it is a hardwarebug, because yesterday it worked, with the brandnew battery. Or is it possible, that the G1 destroys my batterys while switching it off?
I hope, that there are solutions for this...because im loosing my temper slowly...
Can you charge the battery if the phone is off? Red led light should show. You should wait even 30-60 minutes for this - it depends of battery discharge. If the red light will not show this will means that your hardware is broken (phone or phone charger). You can try use another phone charger to test.
That works sometimes....at the moment not, but one hour before, yes.
I had the G1 with the USB cable on the PC, the phone was off, the light was red (not blinking). I waited about 50minutes, then disconnected, tried to switch it on - nothing except a red led light - blinking
At the moment, there isnt any led light, if i connect the phone to the charger unit or the PC...
It looks like hardware problem :/
Would be OK, because there is still warranty.
But what irritates me, is, that it worked without problems, when the battery was charged. Also with the new battery...worked good, since I switched the phone off.
I only want to be sure, because the return merchandise authorization (rma) takes quite long time...
I have the same problem. last week i bought the phone, and used it till the phone battery was empty. I tried to recharge the phone, but i wouldn't go on, only the red light blinking. I had the phone charged for 2 days, with the og charger, no result. Looked like the phone was dead.
Today i tried it again, still no result. All of a sudden the phone turned on and was charging. It is now on 99%.
Should i contact HTC?
edit:
sorry, wrong forum
Just a wild guess. It could also be the ROM that you have. I had a similar problem with my battery drained out like that with flashing red light. Come to find out later that it was something to do with the ROM (CM6.x) that I was using.

Not everything my friend
Just charge the battery for some HOURS or over the night. All the described symptoms indicate a low battery to me.
cheers
UPDATE:
Just managed to unlock a bootloader in that short period of time i can get to fastboot. But still no change, phone wont stay in fastboot.

Well, i actaully tried to leave it plugged over night. But i think it stops charging right after the red light dissapears, which happens after 15mins or so after plugging. Btw, i mentioned earlier that battery shows 3.7V when measured with multimeter, so the battery doesn't seem to be the culprit... or does it...?

your battery is drained below safe line....to 0%. They warn you NOT to update it with less than 60% battery FOR A REASON!!
Friends case she managed to charge ger asus 7 memopad with non-removable bat to 60% after 8 HOURS, because of a bloatware wakelock drainage to 0% after a factory reset....
If that doesn't work you have to either recharge the battery manually (something like car batteries, you have to unsolder the battery connector because the battery doesnt have 2 gold squares that touch the gold pins like the removable ones, or get a new battery.
Li-Po batteries should never be discharged to 0%, and can make problems if they are not removable (Nexus 4)

I did manage to charge it manually with two small wires and an old Nokia charger, when checking battery with multimeter after a few minutes of charging seems to increase voltage. But i guess if the chip on battery is fried there is nothing more i can do.
I will try to leave the phone on charger all night once again, see if that makes a difference, and update if anything changes.
take off the back, disconnect the battery connector wire and connect it again, put it on charger and see if things change
UPDATE:
Leaving it to charge overnight didn't have any effect. Any other suggestions than changing a battery?
Nah, sorry, but i am out of ideas. You basically tried it all :/

I know there is a lot of threads about bricked N4's, and i can assure you that I have viewed each and every one of them, but i still can't resolve my broblem.
This whole brick situation happened after trying to update to Android 4.3 OTA update, the phone didn't complete the process and turned off, where red light of death happened.
So the scenario goes like this:
If i hold POWER button for ~30s when phone is off charger i only get a Google logo for 2 sec, and phone instantly restarts
Holding PWR+VOL-DOWN buttons when phone is off charger doesn't do anything
Plugging phone to charge (socket or PC) results in solid red light
Holding PWR+VOL-DOWN or PWR+VOL-DOWN+VOL-UP for ~15s makes the red light blink at a steady rate
While continuing to hold the respective buttons and pluging the charger off, and on again gets me to bootloader or download mode (depending on button combo) for ~2s and phone restarts.
I tried removing and inserting the battery 3 times. One time i got blinking red light when plugged the charger in. Second time i got solid red light and third time got solid red light again
I tried charging the battery directly for 15 minutes with old Nokia charger, and it resulted in something different(when i assembled the phone and tried to turn it on with PWR+VOL-DOWN buttons when charger was plugged off, i got to bootloader for 2seconds before phone restarted, i tried to boot second time and the same thing happened, but when i tried it third time i got nothing, just like before) so this was the first time i got into bootloader while not charging a phone.
*My PC seems to pick up the phone for a brief moment when it is in bootloader and starts installing the drivers. Drivers gets installed when i'm in download mode for that brief moment too.
**Phone doesn't get to the white or red battery icon while plugged to charge.
***Solid red light dissapears after charging for ~10mins, but phone won't do anything.
****When measured with a multimeter battery shows 3.7V
I hope someone will be able to help me with this, as it is frustrating as f*ck. I don't have a working warranty, so fixing the N4 isn't an option, and where i live phone repair prices are over the roof (ex. motherboard change for N4 costs ~270$ ).

I had the same problem. Kept it on the charger for a whole day and still only the Red Light.
Took it to a local shop and they said there is a short circuit in the antenna
Took it to the LG Service center and they said my motherboard is gone.
Both were costing a bomb to repair and still there was no guarantee.
IMHO, get a new phone.
Sorry
Have you tried charging it with a wireless charging pad? I got mine to boot after I did that. Your battery is drained and it doesn't have enough juice to charge itself.

Don't fall for the motherboard dead trick. Just a way to steal your money.... change the battery and never let it go to 1%
