Tmobile MDA on ATT networking questions - Networking

Like the title says, I've got a SIM/CID-unlocked MDA running on the AT&T network. I've noticed a few problems with the internet/data ...system:
1.) No 3G. It sucks, nothing can be done about it. I'll buy a tilt when I get some cake. </whine>
2.) Whenever I take a phone call or the phone just feels like it, my data connection will be either suspended, closed, or just screwed up. My options for my data connection:
Code:
modem: Cellular Line (GPRS)
Access Point Name: wap.cingular
Username/password/domain (left blank)
Advanced: Server-assigned IP - YES, s/w compression -NO, IP header compression -NO, Use server-assigned addresses- YES
Under GPRS settings, only option is PAP versus CHAP authentication, I believe CHAP was chosen by default. I remember with my 3G i607 that I could browse the internet during a call. It drives me insane that my IM client gets kicked every time I take a call. Is this fixable?
3.) I get MMS headers, but cannot download the messages. Is there a fix for this?
4.) completely unrelated, I feel it's a bit slow and that it eats battery. Brand new battery, charges 23:00-07:00, on with AIM/texting/web/etc until I get off work at 6. by 7 my phone is complaining that the battery is low. Is this normal?
thanks!

Cingular GPRS

Can anyone help me with getiing my GPRS to work when not in the cradle...I used the information on Cingular's Development site and still no luck...I would like to use the device like my old phone, push the "i" and I was connected...any help would be greatly appreciated.
WM2003
ROM A.30.09 ENG
Radio Version A.33.02
Protocol Version 1.3.3
I get The cannot connect, make sure your phone is on or check your settings...
Download newest T-Mo Radio Stack (get from http links in announcment posting) Manually upgrade you radiostack (See threads/search tool for "upgrade downgrade radiostack) you will find enough info after reading a little to make this work. Prob is that ATT radio 1.3.3 proto' does not work on Cing/T-Mo network. You can leave your current ROM, but might want to switch all together to the new T-Mo stuff.

Hi,
How do you like your XDA with Cingular? I am in NYC and can only get 1 to 2 bars with an ok recpetion. Are you using media works as well?
Cant get Cingular GPRS to work...assitance?
Had an old T-mobile pocket PC...unlocked it and flashed XDA Developrs ROM. What are the settings for GPRS, I have the wireless Cingular Media Package
ROM 3.17.03 ENG

If someonecan email me or pm about this config. on Cingular Service. I am just having a hard time getting the GPRS/ WAP/Internet to connect. I am using a SX56. Plaese Help Someone! :?

This is what I use for my GPRS connection with media works. Does your sx56 has a triangle, raoming, icon on?
I am having problmes regitering my xda I on the Cingular netowrk here in Atlanta. Cingular operate here on the 850 band and, while my device can see the T-Mo and ATT networks, I cannot register on either one. I see that folks in this post have connected to Cingular. Are they operating at 1900 in your areas?
I am in NYC and Cingular still operates under GSM 1900. I am not quite sure whether they will start to move away from GSM 1900 to GSM 850 anytime soon, but we are switching to T-mo in october.
Switching is probably a good idea. Right now Cingular are preventing roaming if a native 850 band network is available. If you travel, you will probably have problems...
Changing the sequence
Has anyone that is on Cingular tried to change the sequence of the network search once connected. Phone-->Tools-->Options-->Network-->Set Networks and then check the T-Mobile and AT&T boxes and move them to the top. That should theoretically change the search function for the networks. I.e. look for the T-mob and ATT networks and try to connect prior to looking at the Cingular ones.
Just a thought...
I am in Dallas and they are 850 around here so I have not had a chance to try this myself... but seemed logical.
Dustoff
There are a couple of reasons for us switching to T-mo:
- Hopefully by OCT family plan will still be $9.99 with unlimited Mo to Mo (I think Cingular $9.99 might not be around for that long)
- $19.99 unlimited internet plan anyway you want to use but not abuse it
- GSM 1900 MHZ
- My local sub dealer offers way better deal for T-mo phones
I am hoping that by october P800 will be free and P900 could be on a sub $150 for 1st line and a free V300 for my wife line.
Does anyone know whether this unlimited $19.99 is good for both Blackberry (I will register with t-mo and blackberry.net), cell/pda phone, pcmcia card for laptop and phone connect to laptop via usb/infared? or Do I need to purchase $19.99 for blackberry and another $19.99 for the rest?
Please advise.
I have a new SX56 and used all your settings but no luck
I have used all your settings. I still cann't get connect with cingular.
Does anyone know how to get the configurator on the simens website to send a configuration for sx56 even though they don't support it.
I know the sx1 is list on the site. Is there anyway to modifiy the config of the sx1 to match the sx56 ?
Any suggestions ?

Hi Abohsali
Many thanks for the data! I am assuming that Cingular are operating at 1900 in you area and not 850. Is that correct? Or are these settings allowing you to roam on another providers network, while still using the Cingular sim card. (you are using a cingular sim, correct?)
Regards
Chris
Hi Abohsali,
The WAP Settings works. Thanks, but the GPRS settings don't. I don't know why. I could connect my AOL Instan Messenger but when I try to check my email, it tried to connect to the GPRS.
Any idea? I'm getting tired calling Cingular, they have no clue. Thinking of switching to T-Mobile
Still can't get GSRP with my Simens SX56 (Cingular Network)
I have tried everything I've see here and at Cingular developer site.
I even printed out the paper forum. Cingular(http://alliance.cingularinteractive.com/dev/cda/home) and from this site.
Does anyone have a Siemens SX56 phone using GPRS??
I would love to know what the correct settings are.
When I try to connect I get the following:
The answering modem had disconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if need, tap settings
Help ?? Still can't get GSRP with my Simens SX56
Is anyone ready this ?? Can I get a little help
I finally got both GPRS and WAP to work. Funny thing is that IE could open wap sites if I'm on the WAP network and AOL Instant Messenger could also be run with WAP network.
GPRS is not bad in speed, I could get it to open with IE and turned off the images so it doesn't use a lot of bandwidth and loads faster.
I use the settings from above, but it only works after I called Tech Support to have my account Provisioned. So they did, and when I browse around with IE using the WAP network, a message pop up on the browser saying that Wireless Internet Express is ready to use, click on Activate.
So I did and voila, it works like a charm. I also bought IP Dashboard to monitor how much bandwidth I'm taking whenever I use GPRS. While WAP uses my minutes.
Thanks again Abohsali.
Tips for you guys...
Here's a tip for you guys...
If you use the Pay As You Go Wireless Internet Express (WIX) then the settings above will work as long as you call Technical Support to provision your account. Then the GPRS settings above will work.
But, if you go with Media Works, the unlimited one with Unlimited Wireless Internet Express, then the settings above won't work. But interestingly, the WAP works for downloading email. Before, with Pay As You Go WIX, I have to switch to GPRS to download email. Now I just stay in WAP.
The good thing being in GPRS is that it uses your data connect only, not your minutes. While WAP uses your minutes, but not data. Someone here could correct me if I'm wrong?
Is WAP without WIX free, or is there a $ .01 /kb charge?
How much does the unlimited plan cost?
Whoops, hadn't realise you were in Indonesia

Edge GPRS & WAP questions (cingular/K-Jam)

I've got a K-jam and I'm using Cingular. I've gotten the GPRS connection work via the WAP settings (i.e. wap.cingular - [email protected] - CINGULAR1), but I never could get the regular GPRS settings to work as a ISP connection (isp.cingular - etc.).
I'm wondering about speed. Will I be able to get EDGE level speeds via the WAP connection settings?
Has anyone else gotten Cingular's GPRS settings to work with the K-Jam/WM2005?
Thanks very much for any answers or advice you can provide!
same problem
I am having the same problem, not getting edge speeds using WAP signon, also How do I teather it to my laptop for internet connect anyone have any ideas either mac or pc... Thanks in advance!
K-Jam w/ WM5
Hey gang. I have a K-Jam on Cingular as well and have gotten GPRS to work like a champ. However, I would much rather have EDGE speeds. I have their PDA connect account and setup my default connection to wap.cingular with no username and password. I thought this was the settings for EDGE but my speeds are still GPRS. Any help?
if you have a newer rom you just have to do a reg hack to enable the edge icon. Edge is the same thing as GPRS, but it uses compression to get better speeds, it is more of a marketing tool. If you can recieve edge you will if you are in a area where is is not able it will switch to the little G g you arte seeing. Also make sure under advanced setting you click the use software compression box and not ip header or it will not connect. Also Wap is just a protocol like ftp or http, it is not a connection so you are still going to be using edge. It is actually really old technology but making a nice come back because of the need for a scaled down internet, for pda's like when dial up was the only option, as soon as 3g is widely available you will not see it anymore. this will put the edge for you and some other cool tweaks.
tweaks
not liking randomness, what other 'cool tweaks' does that do? Its a single item to enable the 'e' instead of 'g' when you have edge available, so I am not sure I want that unless the tweaks are enumerated...
On my 8125, IP header compression was ticked but not software compression for the WAP.CINGULAR apn settings. Can anyone confirm the correct compression settings to use on WAP.CINGULAR and whether ISP.CINGULAR is any different?

GPRS Settings

Hi guys. i know this topic has been done to death, but please one more time.
Can someone provide the setting and info i need to get my wizard to connect to O2 GPRS pay as you go.
i believe it is possible but can not manage it, i once asked o2 to enable gprs and i have the G on the taskbar. so i'm assuming i'm all good to go.
i told the setup app after a hard reset that i wanted gprs and it always says unknown error can't connect etc...
please help, don't link me off to a mad thread that argues against itself, i could really so with finding someone that uses a wizard on o2 pay as you go.
anyone?
PS: thanks
Oh shucks sometimes we like to send people on wild goose chases !
But for you
Session Type Continuous/Permanent
Security Off
Gateway Address
Port number 9201
DNS Address 193.113.200.200 (dont need to add)
193.113.200.201
Authentication Normal
Access Point Name payandgo.o2.co.uk
Username payandgo
Password password
Home Page http://pda.o2.co.uk/
I use both contract and payg
that is brilliant, my settings were all messed up.
atill didn't work so i wondered about my sim, called o2 and yes i have data enabled but my sim is nearly 8 years old and so gprs is kinda beyound it lol. its a pp4 sim and i think the latest is a pp9.
anyway o2 are sending me a new one for free so it should work with these setting, many thanks
i now have a new sim but still can not connect
well ok i can connect it says connecting then i get the 2 arrows saying its connected. but checking my hotmail... i select send and receive and it takes ages then errors saying it can not respond to one of the requests.
i have checked with o2 that i cam data enabled, i have a new sim and i am using the above settings provided by meschle. (where do you put the port number btw? could not see that anywhere).
anyone have any ideas... please
Port number is not important if not asked for. Sounds like it is connecting - can you browse on internet? How are you trying to download hotmail? As far as I know you cant download email by pop with hotmail.
thanks for your fast reply. i'm using pocketmsn well trying to anyway. its got my hotmail email listed in it and works well on wifi. msn messenger fails to connect as well.
can i just confirm you have managed to use payasyougo gprs with the wizard? i'm a thinking its time to call O2 again.
one daft question... how do i hard reset it? the manual says. turn it off hold and keep held the top 2 buttons and stab the reset pin. this never worked it did once work while the device was turned on. now i come to hard reset it again and i simply cannot. have tried all sequences of on off buttons and stabbing. this is a daft problem to be having lol
I have a payg card but is not connected for data, the settings were from the same source as contract settings which work. Just a question under connections when you add new connection - did you choose cellular line (gprs) - just a thought could be missed.
Hard reset - the way you describe is the way i do it without problem. Some people do it by settings\clear storage - i feel its pretty much the same.
I want to say thanks a lot for your help, but if you have never connected to gprs on a payasyougo sim then you don't know if it will work. O2 assure me it can work but i'm close to thinking it can not.
Could you try your payasyougo sim with data and see if it works? then i will know if it is a fault my end or not.
Is there anyone out there that HAS go O2 payasyougo GPRS working on a wizard?
PS: hard reset, thanks clear storage works
I have an O2 contract and have an O2 PAYgo sim as well, the PAYgo sim will let you surf the internet via GPRS but NOT send and receive email or connect Agile messenger or pocket MSN, basically its a crap GPRS service, on O2 contract you connect via GPRS through what O2 call their 'mobile web' service, with this you can send/receive email, connect to pocket MSN etc no probs, but like i said PAYgo will not let you connect via O2's 'mobile web' service. So basically your screwed with O2 PAYgo!
The BEST option is to buy an Orange PAYgo sim for a quid i think from their web site, this gives you the same deal as the O2 option i.e 300 free text, 1 MB data for topping up a tenner a month, BUT you will be able to connect to pocket MSN, send receive emails and connect to Agile messenger no probs, i've got one of these and it works brilliantly! They even have an add on that lets you pay a quid for unlimited GPRS usage up to midnight of that particular day, its a fantastic deal!
These are the settings i used on my O2 XDA IIs and now use on my MINI S (the steps it shows in order set it up are for the XDA IIs, but is nearly the same for the MINI S):
1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections.
2. You'll see 2 sets of option links. 'My ISP' and 'Work'. Under the work links, choose 'Add a new modem connection'.
3. Name for connection: o2 gprs. Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS). Tap Next.
4. Access Point Name: wap.o2.co.uk (for contract) payandgo.o2.co.uk (for payandgo)
5. Username: o2wap (for contract) payandgo (for payandgo)
6. Password: password
7. Tap Finish.
8. Back in the connections settings screen, tap 'Edit My Proxy Server'.
9. Tick 'This network connects to the Internet' and 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet'.
10. In the proxy server box enter: 193.113.200.195
11. Tap OK.
12. Back in the connections settings screen, tap the Advanced tab.
13. Tap 'Select Networks'
14. In both drop down boxes choose 'Work' as the connection. Tap OK.
15. Tap OK again.
16. Sorted!
GSM:
(cellular line) dialup WAP access via shortcode 915000 or 07712927927.

proxy settigs are:
HTTP 193.113.200.195 Port 8080

SECURE WAP 193.113.200.200 Port 9203

OK BRILLIANT you have summed up my problem exactly, thanks i thought i was going mad.
i have ordered an orange sim expecting it very soon.

RESOLVED: How do you make a phone use Wifi instead of WAP?

I have an AT&T Tilt (aka HTC TyTN II/Kaiser), and so far using Media.Net works fine...it's pretty cool when I have 3g, but when I don't (and I have a wifi network instead), I'd rather use that.
However, I can't force the device to use wifi networks when it connects to them over WAP...always, it tries to use slow GPRS. Even if I turn of GPRS, then I just lose all connectivity even though I am CLEARLY connected to my wifi network.
What settings do I need to change to force my phone to recognize and use wifi when it has connected to a network, but then automatically use WAP/GPRS/3g elsewhere? This shouldn't be so hard...
Well, not sure what device you are using; however, I'll tell you how I do it on my Tilt. I enter the connection settings and select "My ISP" for both public and private network connections. Then I edit the connection settings for "My ISP" in the "Advanced" tab. Here I create a new connection. I name it Media Net. I enter in all of the same settings as found with the standard MEdia Net connection. Then I save the settings. Now, if I know WiFi is around, I just enable WiFi from the Comm Manager and then just connect as normal. Then whenever I try to connect to the internet or whatnot when WiFi is not available, I am able to connect automatically with the GPRS/GSM connection. Hopefully that helps.
In my first message, I put that I was using a Tilt, but I've updated my sig to be informative as well.
If I use My ISP, and make a connection called MEdia.Net, I still can't enter the same information as for MEdia.Net because I don't know the password for [email protected] (maybe it's something simple that I am just not seeing immediately, but I don't know).
So, when I use that, I can't connect to anything. the connection screen will just pop up whenever it tries to connect via My ISP and then ask for a password.
Wifi does not do anything. I can connect to the network, but neither Internet Explorer, Opera Mobile, Opera Mini, or outlook mobile will use it.
Sorry, kind of tired completely missed the type of phone you are using. Try these settings for MEdia Net:
Code:
Name: MEdia Net
Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access Point: wap.cingular
UserName: <blank>
Password: <blank>
Domain: <blank>
=> Advanced: User server-assigned IP: selected
Use software compression: check
Use IP header: check
Just make sure that you add those settings as a new entry in the 'My ISP" setting. Also, make sure that in the connection settings "My ISP" used for both Public and Private connections. See if this helps.
Those settings allow me to go on with My ISP selected.
*tests WIFI with phone function on*
*tests WIFI with phone function off*
Wow, this seems to work...Thanks so much!

If any1 can answer this ill be impressed

Since i moved to a new network here in ireland called meteor some apps on my smartphones dont leave me connect when using gprs.
This has not just been an issue with just my hd2 but all previous nokia smart phones as well.
E.g on the hd2 i have twitter setup and it downloads updated tweets perfectly while on wifi , But as soon as i leave my hotspot and start using gprs it stops and if i try a manual update it saysusername or password incorrect. This used to also happen to mail for exchange on my n97(havent set it up yet on hd2 but presume problem will be there,Now all other apps work fine on gprs e.g opera ,ie, Checking mail etc
Here are my setting
Data APN Settings:
Start => Settings => Connections tab => Connections => My ISP
Add a new modem connection
Enter a name for the connection: Meteor Data
Select a modem: Cellular line (GPRS, 3G)
Press Next
Access point name: data.mymeteor.ie
Press Next
User name: my
Password: wap
Domain: (should be left blank)
Press Finish
any ideas ?
No idea if this is the same but I had problems with Facebook to begin with - sounds similar but I did not check on wifi etc.
I solved my problems by going into Settings, Data Services and entering my user name and password there. It seemed to work fine after that.
But I am a novice so I doubt I have fixed it for you!
I'm dubious about this, but try it anyway.
Set your access point to isp.mymeteor.ie
I don't know if the same user/pass will work, or if you even need them, so try both.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you mate
Check if you're connecting through a proxy and unchecked if so. Had a similar problem on T-Mobile UK.
Just a thought, but are you trying to force a 3g connection? I notice on teh coverage map ( http://www.meteor.ie/plans/coverage/ ) that 3g coverage is patchy, could it be that it is trying to use 3g/hsdpa when you are in a no coverage area? (yes i know it should automatically drop down, but hey, who knows?)
Does the phone automatically load up the settings for Meteor ?
I'm on O2 here in Ireland myself and I have noticed that I had to set my connection to disable HSDPA/HSUPA in order to get my 3G to work properly, it's under advanced network.
