Hello,
this is a small tutorial which is explains how to create a custom splash screen for HTC touch cruise:
1 - Download and extract tools from Attachements
2 - Create or download your image "BMP 240x320"
3 - Execute nb_image_converter.exe from tools folder, clic on load then search your image file :
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
4 - Clic on "Save .nb" then enter name for you .NB file :
5 - Execute SplashTool.exe --> OK --> select you .nb file --> open :
6 - Execute htcrt.exe --> select "Rom Builder" tab --> From Device liste select "Polaris" --> Select your .nb file previosly created in splash zone --> Clic on "Build!" --> Save your file as "RUU_signed.nbh" :
7 - Flash your Splash ROM with ROMUpdateUtility.exe
good, well done
Thanks. Been looking for something like this.
Thanks ! Cause lot of french member ask me for that !
Does anyone know how to do this with the start up image on the o2 version of copilot live 7 you get with the orbit 2?
Ok, ignore my last question i figured it out.
The problem i have now is with the rom update utility, everything is fine until the ppc screen says Loading..., at this point the activesync connection ends and i get an error 260 saying the software cannot connect to the pda
Remove MicroSD from slot and everything will work.
The_Steph
Hello.
It's a pretty cool thing, thanks !
Just a question : I'm using stock SFR french ROM, do i need to use HardSPL ?
Thanks again.
works great, does anyone know how to change the second splash image?

easy, just rename any gif to "animated.gif" and copy to \windows
that dosent apper to work on my orbit 2, i still get the green windows mobile screen
The second splash screen (animated HTC logo) is the windows\animated.gif file. To disable it, you have to change your registry settings :
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\StartupAnimation]
"Enabled"=dword:00000000
The third one (Windows mobile) is Windows\welcomehead.96.png.
The_Steph
Right, im using an orbit 2, when i startup i used to get:
1. O2 Splash Screen
2. Windows Mobile Splash Screen (Green one)
3. Today Screen
I did the method in the first post to get:
1. Custom Splash Screen
2. Windows Mobile Splash Screen (Green one)
3. Today Screen
then i tried the method you posted to try to change 2. but i still get what is above
chris 2403,
My mistake, Windows Mobile Splash Screen is not welcomehead.96.bmp as stated in my ealier post (corrected since to avoid other user mistakes) but welcomehead.96.png.
Sorry for that.
The_Steph
Thanks, that worked great!
This is what i use now
Splash
I'm not able to rename or overwrite animated.gif and welcomehead.96.png. I try with Total commander and also try to change attributes (system and read only unchecked) but I can't! Any suggestions!?
Ciao
message with HTC ROM TOOL
I am using Vista and I have a message witch HTC ROM TOOL when I load splash_screen.nb (150ko) that I have created with nb_image_converter.exe
"Size of this file is less than default. Do you want to assign this file?"
when I press "YES", I have a new message :
"Do you want to pad this file with trailing 0x00's to achieve default size?"
I press "YES" and I click on BUILD and a message indicate me that All seems to be OK
When I flash my HTC Polaris, the splash screen is white and my picture is not loaded.
Where is the mistake?
make sure size of the foto u using to create nb image.
u must save the new file as RUU_signed.nbh as this is what the flasher looks for
otherwise u probably are left with blank splash seen as white
The problem i have now is with the rom update utility, everything is fine until the ppc screen says Loading..., at this point the activesync connection ends and i get an error 246 saying pda not responding

[10/18/08] ** 7. update ** Change Artemis Splash, Animated GIF and WelcomeHead Image
Hi,
just test and love it... It is a .NET Framework 3.5 application - you need the Microsoft runtimes.
Also do not forget the USPL flash...
** 1. update v0.2.1 ** : Now with save feature (nb format) for ROM cooks.
** 2. update v0.2.5 ** : Some bug fixes and small preview during update process...
** 3. update v0.3.0 ** : Changed to a nice look and feel. Just search the buttons...
** 4. update v0.3.1 ** : Added save as dialog box
** 5. update v0.4.0 ** : Now you can also change the welcomehead image (own button) - animation image will follow...
** 6. update v0.6.2 ** : Animated.gif can also be changed
** 7. update v0.7.1 ** : Updated RUU from version 3.0.3.1 to version 3.6.3.1
I hope it will support VISTA with the new RUU version - please test it for me. I do not have Vista. Thx.

Absolutely Fab tool sooooo simple and yet so clever
does it wipe the device when updating or just like uspl reboot keeping everything
I'm interested in using this too, but does it wipe your data?

Very good job ! Thanks !

Device Data
Just so you all know I took the plunge and used this. USPL first of course
It takes seconds to do and sure enough the image is changed.
No Data loss on my device so can be done over and over again.
Once again. ****DONT FORGET USPL****
But yes it works as stated.
I will say what you see in the image file before updating phone is what you get I had to crop image so that the picturs wasnt distorted.
ENJOY ALL

many thanks I've been looking for ages for such a tool.
I did found however a small bug not worth fixing.
I was using this tool in the same folder als my radio update nb file. and it flashed the radio insteed of the splash screen.
no harm done exept that I tought for a minute that it didn't work.
I'm using the black & blue 3.7 rom and after the splash screen it switches to a small (animated?!) htc logo.
Im wondering if that is part of the rom subsplash screen (flashable) or its part of windows mobile 6 splash screens. if it is part of the rom then It would be nice to be able to flash it to. otherwise keep it this way.

The animation is based on the file animated.gif located in the windows folder - it is not the second splash. It is just an application from HTC or so.
The small bug - I do not know. The update program is from HTC. Maybe the tool decides on file names which file it will flash. Maybe I will test it...
jvc
Looks a good tool - thanks. I am sure this will find its way into some-ones kitchen I expect quite a few more custom splash screens now
Great tool, thanks. Maybe Stick this post ? Very usefull application.
what are the dimensions of the image? 240x320? I sense an apple boot screen coming up
[edit] just put this together, anyone want to give it a go? I'm not near a syncable computer
Oh dear, the Fanboys are everywhere....
Is there a reason it has to be a bitmap it loads surely any image file should be ok. Then we could have animation in gifs etc

You can load gif, bmp, jpg and so on with this tool. But I convert the picture into a single bmp. So no animation possible. Also I believe it is not possible for the first splash screen.
If you want you only can have an animated gif, when windows starts (animated.gif in windows folder - if the tool from HTC is installed).
jvc
sorry if this is a dumb question, but which tool do you need to have the animated second splash screen?

So again and again... The animated screen (e.g. HTC Logo in b&b 3.7) is NOT the second splash screen. It is a boot gif from windows. It is based on a tool from HTC. You can find the gif in the windows folder (animated.gif). Just choose any paint pogram and creat your own animated gif (e.g. ULEAD GIF Animator) and replace the animated.gif with your own one...
I just Upgraded to sprint new ROM 2.17 , it has HTC logo in black background 1st and sprint animated logo in black 2nd , then comes this green windows mobile logo, I hate it I Made this windows mobile splash screens to match the rest, tought to share them with you guys. Pick whichever you like and drag the welcomehead.96.png to storage card or my document in ur PDA then use resco explorer or total commander to move it to windows directory, allow the new file to overwrite the original one.
Note: dont try to move the image directly from your computer to your device windows directory, it wont overwrite the old one due to windows protected files.
I suggest that you backup the original welcomehead.96.png somewhere in your pda in case you want to use it again one day without hard reseting.

This bootscreen is very nice. Can you also make standard size (320x320 pixels) version - for people that start their devices in landscape mode?
Flashed it straight away, beautifull dude
I have SKTools Registry Explorer. How do you movie it over to replace the old one? Is it possible to rename and modify the registry to acquire it?

Hey Poorlyduck, how do you use a GIF for the splash screens? The splash screen kitchen that I've been using (from EqX) only had tools to use BMPs for the splash.
Inquiring minds want to know
Oh I found this in one of your other threads. So I guess we can only use PNGs and GIFs for the last splash image (the welcomehead.96.png)? No use of GIFs for the earlier splash screens that you have to flash into the device? Is that correct?

You can convert the .gif in .png with XnView.
Rename in welcomehead.96.png
Copy this in the windows directory
My question : Is there a way to change the screen that comes before the splash screen on an ASUS P535 ????
Some devices have an "animated.gif" inside the Windows directory. Just replace that one with this one to get the animation on boot.
Don't know if it works on all devices, i think it depends on some application by HTC but i'm not sure.

Yeah, just copy the file to your \Windows folder then use a reg editor to change the following key,
HKLM>Software>HTC>StartupAnimation and change the GIFFile target to point to poorlyduck's new file:
GIFFile = \windows\poorlyducwindowsglobewg2.gif
I've created a cab package for ease of use and included another Black HTC Animated Screen.
i use P535 and i serch for the famous animated.gif...
but can 't exist on Asus p535...
I ve found the shutdown.gif but the splash screen before welcomehead.96.png does no exist in this format... .gif...
Anybody have an idea...

Edit: Weird. A couple of resets and now it is working.

Hi Dan,
Just downloaded the MARVELLOUS Splash screens you have uploaded in you thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=420028
and you have also said "i use it with advanced configuration tool v3.0 for the splash screen.
hope you like it", I am using Advance Configuration 3 as well and tried to browse the image under the splash > Operator > Startup image & restarted 3 times but nothing has been changed.
I am using original O2-United Kingdom 1.93 Rom, do I have to do something special for Advance Config to change the startup picture ??
Can you advice please ?
Regards
Sid
Nice work thanks for sharing.

to use them to replace your operator splash you have to flash them i believe..
there are 3 startup images in total:-
1. The Operator Logo (flash to chage it)
2. The HTC Startup animation (replace gif to change it)
3. Windows Mobile Start Splash (again, replace png file)
i did some work a while back:-

Hi there, sorry for getting back late...
To Build an image to flash you need some tools:-
1. NBHUtil (Win Tool to build NBH files)
2. nbimg (DOS Tool to Convert BMP to nb image files)
wait..... JUST FOUND THIS....See here:-
no point in repeating....

LAST UPDATED WITH NEW WALLPAPERS/SPLASH SCREENS: 01/02/2013
Hi Guys,
Just giving a little something back to XDA...
Here are some custom wallpapers/lockscreens (JPEG) and the same images in NBH format ready to be flashed as a splash screen. This will replace the screen that appears as soon as you start the phone (the one with the white background and green HTC logo). All images come in both formats and I've also bundled the CustomRUU application into the first RAR that you will need to flash the splash screens. Just download the RARs, extract and follow the instructions in the README - you don't need to be an advanced user to do this!
Download the RARs to get all the following thumbnails in full 480x800 resolution.

Thanks for downloading my wallpapers/splash screens!
These are compatible with all HD2 phones regardless
of the operating system in use.
There are 2 folders in this zip:
1.) Lockscreen and Wallpaper [JPEG]*
2.) Flashable Splash Screen [NBH]**
* To install the lockscreen wallpapers simply copy
the JPEG file(s) to your HD2 via bluetooth/USB
and set the wallpaper/lockscreen using the option
in your operating system's menu. For WP7/8 phones
sync the file(s) to your HD2 using Zune.
**To flash the boot screen move the NBH file of choice
into the same directory as the CustomRUU
application. The JPEG file with correlating name
contains the same image in case you want to
preview before flashing. Make sure there is only 1
NBH file in this directory when flashing. Turn off
your HD2. With the phone off, hold down the power
and vol- buttons until the screen with red, green
and blue stripes is displayed. Now plug your HD2
into your PC via USB. When connected propery the
word "Serial" at the bottom of your HD2 screen
will change to "USB". Now all you need to do is run
CustomRUU as an administrator (right click) and
follow the instructions to flash. Your device will
restart after 20 secs(ish) and boom! Enjoy your
new splash screen.
