Readyboost capable SD slot? - Shift General

Having trouble getting readyboost to work on my Shift.
Have tried several usb sticks that I know are Readyboost capable and do go from the USB port.
What I really want to get working is a Sandisk Ducatti 4GB SDHC card.
Alas, no go with this card either. I can"t get the Readyboost options to appear no matter what I do.
has anyone gotten Readyboost working?

I can't get readyboost to work, even with USB drives which I know are compatible.
Readyboost is not affered as an option, perhaps this is something else that HTC have deliberately removed.

is there is a way to see contents in SD card like pic, video....etc with Origami central?
?

By default the readyboost service has been turned off on the Shift. All you need to do is go and turn it on in the Windows Management Console. Full instructions here:

interesting followup... i think it is disabled by default because it may crreate an issue with the SDIO wifi card... will report more later...

Yup this works.
" 1. Click on the Start button.
2. In the search field on the Start button type services.msc and press the enter key.
3. When User Access Control asks if you would like to continue, do so or provide administrative account credentials to do so.
4. Scroll down to and double-click on the ReadyBoost service.
1. Change the Startup Type drop down menu to to Automatic.
2. Then press the Start button to start the service.
3. Press the OK button.
5. Now close the Services console.
The ReadyBoost service should now be started and if you reinsert the flash drive it will prompt you to use the drive for ReadyBoost."
Thanks cspelsor.

That did the trick! Thanks.
Will try it out and see if my Shift blows up.

Interesting. My memory test on the performance index is 4.5 without using readyboost.
With a 1Gb SD card allocated to readyboost, the memory score stayed the same, but the Graphics performance for Windows Aero went from 3.1 to 3.8.

I'm finding that when you sleep vista and bring it back it don't see the sd card again until it reboots, no much use for readyboost!
Anyone else confirm this. Ive tried a few SD's of different sizes

mine works fine, atm I'm using a kingston 2GB and it sees the SD card both from sleep and hibernation or turned off
PS: its configured for readyboost

Hi,
I was also testing Readyboost, and it works fine with my 4gb SDHC card.
One serious "side-effect" though: I cannot see battery and network status anymore on the taskbar !! It is also greyed out in the Properties page so it is not possible to enable it.
Any idea, anyone ?

I have install a 16GB SDHC inside Shift and it works great. I am using 4GB for ready boost and i can see a huge difference in speed. By the way i haven't update to SP1 yet, so after update to SP1, readyboost will work even better!
I do have one problem, which is when i put the device to sleep or hibernate, after resume, my device can not detect the SD card. I have a transcend 16GB SDHC, and ideas people?

18 Hours?
How did you get 18 hours of vista use?

3.8??? how did you get your shift to a graphic's performance of 3.8?

i can't get readyboost to work with a 1gb usb stick and not with a 8gb sdhccard
but they do work on my laptop as readyboost
i enabled readyboost on the shift
but when i try to use it it says it's too slow

Same result with and without readyboost.
Guess it depends on my SSD.

readyboost works after sleep
but not without sp1
how to install sp1 and make shagctrl work??

Hi everyone shift owners ,
I just found this from the net , see www.eboostr.com
i hv downloaded the free trial - u can use for 4 hours for everytime u boot up
i use a kingmax u stick of 8gb , made a cache of 4gb for using ebooster
my shift is running on windows xp tablet
and the results is noticeable much faster loading of pages for surfing the internet as compare before i install this software , although i dont know how to benchmmark a value like 3.8 or something , but definitely it is much faster now , everytime i click on the net , the pages loads fast like a turbo push
i recommend all to try it out as u know how our shift lags sometimes
thks for reading and enjoy yr shift - jimmunsw

FREE space used as RAM
i have tried the e-booster on windows 7 about 2 weeks ago and i agree it's fast.
i have only shared 1,5Gb from my 4GB sd card but it's ok i guess...
i used eBoostr.v3.0.Build.491.Incl.Patch
you can find it in torrent...
Do not forget to remove the SD card before you resume from sleep or hibernate as it might give you a black (jam) screen.
remove card -> system resume -> insert card
Do not forget whenever you install something on windows 7
to use vista (service pack 2) compatibility and of course to run it
as Administrator.

prevent unloading storage card programs on Jasjar

All my programs are on storage card. I would like some programs frequently used to be always on, e.g. Pocket Informant. However, they keep closing. I cannot confirm when this happens, but probably after screen shut off or much later. Is there a way to keep these programs running?

It may have something to do with how long after awakening before the card is available to the operating system. The solution may be to have a fast card (133-150X). I went from a 1GB card which didn't say how fast it was (1X??!!) and which had this problem, to a 4GB 133X card which generally does NOT have this problem. It occurs occasionally, but generally, if I leave TotalCommander running, it's still running when I open the device and start it the next morning. Hope this helps. Cheers,
gibhenry, Thanks for reply. .At the moment I also use 1 GB card. Want to try 4 GB. Does 4 GB work on Jasjar. Precisely, which one do you use? I wonder, any how, what does the size and speed of card have to do with how long before awakening the card was accessed?

Well, I can tell you to just use a PLAIN SD card, not some of the advanced architectures, which will not work on the Universal. I got my 4GB card in conjunction with my purchase of iGuidance GPS software from buyGPSNow. It is a 133x card. I had purchased a 150X card that's something like SD-CF (but I'm not sure exactly what the designation was, so don't take that literally), and I determined that they will NOT work with FAT32 on either the PC or the PPC. So be sure you get a plain but FAST SD card for your Universal. Hope this helps. Cheers,

SDHC card disappears after resume

Hi Everyone,
I experience that the inserted SD-card is not detected when I put my Shift into hibernation and than resume. Even worse: it doesn't appear when I remove & reinsert the card neither :-(. I need to reboot when I want to use SD again !
Would be great to hear that somebody solved it in the meantime..
I'm experiencing the same problem .
Other than that I couldn't be happier. This is by far one of my greatest gadget acquisitions!
ok i got a workaround, b4 you hibernate or put into sleep disable the memory card under disks in device manager then sleep/hibernate. when you wake up re-enable sd card in device manAGER. works for me but is not ideal, guess we have to wait for updated driver.
I have the same problem.
Mine stays on!
Now...
What do you know.
Mine stays on after Hibernate and back.
I installed SP1.
Could that SP1 have solved it?

Readyboost is the solution ?
Hi,
I was also experimenting in the meantime. Apparently, when I enable Readyboost on the SD ( not the whole capacity of course), it stays visible after hibernate and resume.
Can somebody confirm it or it is just my luck ?

Stranege,
I am having the problem also now.
Have I been lying before?
I remeber it worked well, and now....
Huib
Same problem. I have SP1 and it won't even recognise the card if i take it out and re-insert it.
No problems here with SP1 and 8GB SDHD....I always recognizes the card (but after 5 - 10 seconds)
SD card is OK Now. How come?
I am unable repeat this problem.
I have two SD cards.
One is an "old" Sandisk Extreme III 1GB card and now and then it gave me problems not being recognized after hibernate/resume.
Today I am testing it several times ( with power plugged in or not, and several power plans, because they are supect for me) and I see it back every time.
I can "safely remove" it and I get it back.
So this is really random.
The other card is a 4 GB sandisk SDHC. I never had problems with this card.
How now?
I hope somebody can find a kind of consistency in this problem. Restarting is a drama under Vista and, when on battery, costs you at least 10% of power.
Huib
Edited: Now I also have problems with the 4 gb SDHC card. So, for me, the problem is random.
Also after "safely remove" the card does not come back when ejected and re-inserted.
Using the USB port with a reader seems to work better. But not very handy though.

It does'nt seem to work for me. The Shift did not show my SD card after an "re-enable" It (Of course) asked me to restart after the enable.

Hi,
Now I have this problem too
Not at first but today it suddenly started, I changed nothing, didn't install anything. Just browsing the Internet.
btw, I can't enable readyboost... The option is not there in SD properties... Could it be the card is not readyboost capable? Or should the tab to enable readyboost still be there...

You have to enable the readyboost service. It is turned off by default on the shift.
Oh? How?

When you insert a compatible device, the AutoPlay dialog box will offer you the option to speed up your system using Windows ReadyBoost.

Not sure if we are talking about the same things.
If you do not enable the ReadyBoost service, the Readyboost option will not appear under the SD card's properties.
Have you enabled the ReadyBoost service? It is set to disabled by default. You will need to set it to Auto.

Seriously? Install the Vodafone UK updated ROM. Believe me... it is worth it! Speed improvements, performance improvements, stability, and so on. you'll just have to set up your network settings in order to use 3G or GPRS with ur device afterwards: http://xperiancer.blogspot.com/2009/01/setting-up-your-network-rom-update.html
I think the problem still exists, but the behaviour is better. No more sound via the phone.
When making a call all goes well. The sound is going via the BT carkit (Nokia ck-7w). After I end the call via the phone (via the nokia button is NOT working), it takes abount 1.5 minutes and then the nokia carkit connection led goes off. Pushing the button for a second and the connection is back within a second.
This shoudn't happen imho.
I have the VFE R2 rom since 2 days btw...

Lol no prob but why doesn't it work on R2A firmware? The tnynnt SD TuneUp? man these read and read speeds are like epic lower than usual. Maybe we should ask tnynnt to see if he can write like a new version of the cab and help with the speeds? I also uninstalled and re-installed tnynnt SD TuneUp and saw that it still does speed up the speeds. Without tnyynt sd tuneUp it's like :
Main storage (write);1025.32;KB/sec
Main storage (read);4256.45;KB/sec
Storage Card (write); 249.57;KB/sec
Storage Card (read);4597.97;KB/sec
So it still works, but not as good as we wished it should.
Help us out tnyynt!!!

The new ROM (version 1.02.931.3) speeds up the load time, updates the 3D drivers, adds a Google search bar to the default home screen and fixes the problem with Bluetooth. (note: as we’ve not had any problems with Bluetooth here, I can’t guarantee that this is right, but according to reports elsewhere, it is.)
is there a way to chack for the 3d drivers?

Nexus one maximum transfer speed (using all methods)

hi, so ive been experimenting with transfer speeds to the SD-CARD with my nexus one.
so far i managed :
2mb/sec using the stock USB cable, with eclair, same with froyo stock kernel.
via WiFi tether and connecting a laptop to it, transfering files via FTP server on the android device
1.5-2mb/sec on froyo tethering
using the wifi tether app on eclair, around 600kb/s (fail? or maybe some cyanogen issues)
i recently upgraded to a CLASS6 transcend 16gb sdcard
yet the results are the same.
i tried a few SD-CARD testing apps, all results were around 2mb/s
is this some sort of hardware/software limitation?
did anyone get passed 2mb/s?
in theory my card should reach 6mb/sec write speeds.
so im hoping we can share our experiances.. and maybe come to some conclusion on whats going on, and finally put these issues to rest.
So you're trying to do what? You're on cellular, wifi, tethered, SD card speeds.....
I don't get the point.
If you're wanting to benchmark your SD card, maybe this program? I haven't tried it yet, just finally thought about searching. http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/performance.test/
You say "mb" which isn't correct for anything (unless you really mean "millabit"). Do you mean megaBIT (Mb) or megaBYTE (MB) / sec ?
I just ran several tests from this Vista PC using ADB Push to the SD card (a 16GB Class 6), and I see 9-13 megabit/second or 1.1 - 1.3 megabyte/second rates, at file sizes from 10 to 25 MB.
This is a Vista work PC, running around 40 applications, Symantec AV and Firewall and all manner of other crap. If I think about it, I'll pound out a test from a real computer later.
lol Why are you people giving him such a hard time ?
He wants to figure out the fastest transfer speeds. Who gives a crap about Mb Mb MB or benchmarking his SD.
N1 transfer speeds are slow regardless of the SD card. Im not sure why.
I would like to know if file transfers over USB , or Wifi result in faster transfers.
I think the OP is wanting to do the same thing.
Using the Websharing or FTP via Efile sometimes gave me better results than USB.
lol yea be gentle guys. But yea I remember reading that it's always gonna be slower using USB and Phone, it's better to take your card out and use a reader. It's usually at least 2 times faster when I take my SD out and use a reader

Thanks for the post, regardless of the patronizing of others... I've wondered the same thing as I've only gotten 2mb/sec going through the USB mount in android. I thought something was wrong with my computer so I've tried both pc and mac with the same speeds. I thought it was my memory card so I plugged it directly into a card reader and got 4x's the speed...
My main reason for wanting this to be fixed or acknowledged is for sync'ing music through programs like Salling Media Sync. It seems to me a wifi alternative would be faster even at 802.11g if it's related to the USB interface... let me know what you find I'm curious...
My wife's transfer speed was 3.6 on the stock SD card...
I have a class 6 and speed is under 2
I try to switch cards later and see if my class 6 goes faster on her N1
I too have never seen faster than 2mbish, even when i upgraded from stock to a class 2 8gb, and then to a class 6 16GB

Storage Card Problems(this is a long one)

Hey Guys,
I've been having a TON of problems with my storage card lately. I was using doubletwist to sync music when the problems first happened. Basically the storage card flipped out, it wouldnt allow any access either through the computer or on the phone. So i turned off the phone popped the Storage Card out and then back in. When I plugged my HD2 back into the computer i discovered that all my files on the storage card had been deleted.
I called t-mobile customer care and they told me to call the htc accessories line to get a new one. Did that and the lady says theres nothing they can do as all the cards are back ordered.
I'm worried that its going to happen again, and on top of all this my 16 GB Storage card is now 971 MB, i was adding my applications when it said the card was full so i checked and thats what the computers giving me.
I figured that maybe if i formatted the card it would work but i cant find that option anywhere when i right click on the card when plugged into the computer.
So basically all i have now is a 971 MB Sd card with a few applications on it instead of the 16 GB preloaded SD card that held about 200 pictures taken with the phones camera(that are now gone along with Transformers and everything else that was on the phone)
Sorry for the long rant guys but im really frustrated...
Any Help?
Have you connected the phone to the PC in 'disk drive' mode? If not, then do that to 1) be absolutely sure you can't see/recover any of the files, and then 2) to format it (it has to be connected this way for that option to be available)
I'm not an expert on here (more of a "user" than a "maker") but I have had my share of SD card problems.
If you are using the class 2 card that came with your phone, order a class 4 or class 6. The class 2's are known to cause performance problems for the HD2. When I upgraded to my class 6, I noticed the difference right away on graphics-heavy apps that use the SD card in realtime (i.e. not just to store profiles).
You need to decide if you simply want to get your SD card back or try and save data on it first. If you just want to format it and start over, try these:
Try first using the sd formatter in your HD2, in the "Tools" folder.
If you have a card reader or a card slot in your Windows PC, try inserting the card (or, as sirphunkee said, mount your HD2 as "disk drive" and not as active sync) and go to control panel > administrative tools > computer management > Disk Management and see if Windows can read your card. If it can, you should be able to right click on the drive and select "format". You could also try assigning it a new drive letter. Sometimes it seems to kick start the Drive Management services into accessing your card with a proper mount.
Download SD Formatter from Panasonic. Sometimes when windows can't do it, this program can.
If you have an uBuntu OS installed, sometimes using gParted is also effective.
I have also seen threads on here about downloading the default factory files that should already be on the card, with links...
Hope this helps. But bottom line you should definitely NOT wait for another crappy class 2 card from TMo/HTC and go get a class 6 (you can find them easily enough online for about $50).

Have you connected the phone to the PC in 'disk drive' mode? If not, then do that to 1) be absolutely sure you can't see/recover any of the files, and then 2) to format it (it has to be connected this way for that option to be available)

So instead of using active sync to connect use disk drive mode. Got it, but once i do that if there were files to recover i would see them correct?

Yes, as long as you're looking at the card's contents via file explorer on the pc, not the phone...the one one the phone won't be able to see the card at all when it's connected that way.
Basically, when you connect in disk drive mode, the pc handles the card just like a regular external USB hard drive.
You'll probably be able to format and use it again now that you're connecting it that way, but if it still acts up then go through any and all of mfrey's steps above, including just upgrading to a higher-class card if possible. The stock cards that come with the HD2 seem to be somewhat inconsistent in quality and potentially unreliable, and as he said the speed difference of a faster card can definitely be noticible in every day use.
i connected the phone via disk drive mode as suggested but i had the same results after connecting multiple times so i decided to format the card through the phone as mfrey suggested. After doing so the card still reads as a total of 971 MB both on the phone when checked under settings and on the computer.
Im going to try going to t-mobile to see what they say about my problem because i dont see how this could happen, ive been using this sd card for about three months and up til a few days ago it worked perfectly
Wish me luck guys

Were you able to see the drive in Drive Management in Administrative Tools? If so, when you right-clicked it, was there an option to delete partition? Did you try SD Formatter (it's free)?
If it's the factory class 2 that came with your phone, it could be bricked...
