Internet Access from laptop via bluetooth & GPRS

Hi
I have been trying to connect my laptop via bluetooth to the device to obtain internet access via GPRS.
I had this working (just once), but now it keeps giving me stupid errors. Basically, it connects, then instantly disconnects without leaving any error messages. I then try reconnecting (fails) again, with the same message. On the 3rd try, it tells me that the line is engaged (it aint). Once you get to the 3rd try, soft reset of XDA IIs is required in order to try again, in which case, we go back around in a circle!!!
Really anoying thing is that it successfully connected *once* (browing working fine etc) and that the settings are identical to what they were when it connected successfully.
Bloody thing. Any idea's?
Nigel
Hi
Please try to follow this steps!
1st Make sure you donĀ“t have any ActiveSync connection in your Bluetooth settings in your PDA.
2nd Create in connection wizard in your PDA a ActiveSync via Bluetooth connection.
3rd Goto to your ActiveSync in your PC and goto to FILE>Obtain Connection
If you have the connection made via bluetooth and your active sync start connecting, you already have Internet in your PDA. If not open your PDA ActiveSync and try there to make synchronization.
I hope i was usefull.

Maybe you missed the point. I think the original post was on how to connect a laptop to the internet wirelessly though a Bluetooth connection to the XDA then with the GPRS internet data connection on the XDA. Your post sounds like how to get internet access on the XDA through the laptop connection. I also have the latter working but not the former. I need some detailed instructions on how to accomplish the former through BOTH GPRS and dial up. I need the steps to take on the PC as well as the mobile device.
internet access through gprs
It's something due to xp protection rules.I hope you'll find solution looking at advanced section in modem property (in windows home page start>setting>modem>modem properties);there's a string shorter than the original one you've typed, lacking of ",0,0" at its end.
Try to add it manually.
Hope this help.

The answers should be here...
Hi Mr. Serj. I seemed to have a lot of problems and after "messing" around enough I found the solution. In the end it was pretty easy. My description is for WinXP but it should be pretty close in Win2000. See the fourth post from me here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=18404&highlight=

Using Jam as Blutooth GPRS modem for laptop with Vodafone UK

I'm trying to get a net connection for my laptop over bluetooth through my Jam.
I'm on Vodafone UK & they provide software called "Connect Me" for the laptop but, of course, the list of supported phones during setup doesn't include the Jam or any PPC Phone device.
Does anyone know how else I can go about this?
Cheers,
M1
Hey. It shouldn't be too difficult. The only thing you need is to start the modem application on your Magician and (provided that you have a working GPRS connection for your provider already configured) enter the exact (!) name of this connection (on my Magician it's the GPRS connection under "ISP" - use the name of this GPRS connection, not ISP!) in Options->Use preset GPRS APN and also check the box. Then you have to go to the settings on your PC, check in your Bluetooth manager the available services and click the modem service (SSA or something). There you have to enter your name and password of the provider and as phone number (at least for german providers) *99#. In the last step, you might have to check the TCP/IP settings and set them the way your provider needs them to be. Hope it helps.
Thanks Dandie - I'll give it a go....
Nope - sorry - I'm totally baffled.
My GPRS connection on the phone is fine in normal use and is names "voda gprs".
By "the modem application" I assume you mean "Wireless Modem".
In the tools/option menu I have "Preset GPRS Connections" checked and the APN box completed as "voda gprs"
The connection type is set to bluetooth.
Whjen I press the "Start" button not a lot happens. It doesn't connect to my GPRS service.
However, if I connect to my GPRS service manually by clicking the connection icon in the bar at the top and clicking "connect GPRS" the "Connection" box in WModem turns yellow - which I assume is a good thing.
I have bluetooth turned on on my jam and my laptop (sony vaio) and the devices are already paired.
However - the laptop BT manager (Bluespace NE) only shows the following services available on my Jam: File Push/Serial/vCard & Dial up Networking.
No modem service. Clicking dial up networking gives me Dial-up networking Com 8 & Serial Port Com 10 options which I have enabled. But clicking dial up networking just pops up the options box again and doesnt seem to connect.
Launching browser on laptop having done all this = still no connection.
Jeez - I'm not new to this and have had this laptop connected to numerous mobile phones for internet access but this is driving me nuts.
I just want to make a BT link launch my browser and go but it ain't happening ;(
You're on the way. Don't give up. It's not anywhere as easy as it is with a normal mobile phone and a special application. This is the fault of MS if you ask me.
Anyway. You shouldn't connect to your GPRS connection when you use the modem. Otherwise it won't work. So disconnect on the PPC, start the modem application and select bluetooth (the APN setting is alright already). Klick on start. Now you have to initiate the connection from the PC. Connect to the dial up profile of your PPC. Then should a normal DUN dialog be displayed, allowing you to enter the password, number etc. These informations are given by your provider. The bluetooth modem might have to be configured separately in device manager of the system. (you don't need AT strings when you use the APN setting on your PPC)
I give up.
Followed these instructions to the letter - also followed MS support sheets & nothing.
Just end up with helpful error message - error 777 the modem on the remote computer is out of order.
My God - this should be soooo simple. It's a basic requirement. But I am going to have to revert to my trusty cellphone for mobile internet from laptop.
Even if I could get it to work I don't want to have to launch the Wmodem app on the Jam every time I need to connect. This is screwed up.
Grrrrarg.
Thanks for the advice anyway.
Hi,
It is a requirement to start the Wireless modem app on the Magician [if you want to use it as a modem] and set it to Bluetooth.
On the PC, go to control panel > phone and modem options and select the properties of the modem installed for the Magician - I am on XP SP2 and it is installed as a 'Standard modem over bluetooth link'.
On the advanced tab, enter +CGDCONT=1,"IP","Internet" and then set the Dial-up number in you network connection to *99# - that is it.
I am on T-Mobile [UK] and it works fine
@pcd
When you enter the AT string, you have to leave the option "Use preset GPRS connection" in the settings of the Modem app on the Magician cleared. For me, both ways worked, either by naming the (working) GPRS connection in the settings or by entering the AT string. I prefer the first solution. You can't combine them! (at least it always failed when I tried)
@MarkOne
You're damn right! It really is too complicated and could have been made much more comfortable. But once you get it to work, it's quite flexible too, since you can connect via cable, infrared and bluetooth.

OMG, I got it to work, and I'm using the internet connection now on my laptop. I've had the SX-56, the MDAIII, and now the MDA Compact. I must say that I like the compact the best as it is the most practical. I have T-Mobile in the USA, and the initialization string for the bluetooth modem on my laptop is:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","Internet3.voicestream.com"
My APN here for T-Mobile is internet3.voicestream.com. I think it's different for people who use WAP though.
Thanks guys. Now I can sign on by bluetooth, USB, and serial.
Afraid I gave up on this a long time. Nothing I tried worked and life's too short to spend several days trying to get my "phone" to work as a gsm modem.
The anansky rom upgrade, by comparison, took just under an hour (mainly as it was my first outing with a hex editor).
Mark One, I totally agree with you. I've tried everything and I can't get the bloody thing to work.... I had no problem last time with the Widcomm stack on XP but now that I've upgraded to SP2, the bloody MS Stack is driving me nuts.... Tried all the instructions here and it still won't work. It's pissing me off!
There is the option within Wmodem to use bluetooth, i have only used it over usb atm tho

Yeah, I guess on the PC you need the Widcomm Stack, or at least any other than Microsoft
You can find many hints in the web how to make the Widcomm stack runs under SP2.
i ve got nearly same problem but i did all the same and cant connect
ive got internal BT (toshiba), i create SSA connection (automaticaly at port com 40) , entered extra dial string command (it is 100% correct), turn on Wireless modem program at my HTC, choose bluetooth and tap start.
Maximum that i reached was that connection led turned yellow. Other 2 are black.
i tried to make direct port connection at ports from 1-10 and to install modem manually. But i could choose only standart modem cause usb modem driver dont fit.
So ... dont know what to do
Ive got the same problem at the minute, however when i browse what services are availible on my magician in "My Bluetooth Places", dial up networking isnt one of them!
Also i havent got any form of bluetooth modem installed on my pc anywhere (i.e the phone) ive tried enabling wmodem and then searching for it but i get nowhere fast
Please help i need to get this working!
Ive just been in touch with Imate (who are BRILLIANT by the way)
and i have solved my problem! here is the pdf they sent me which i followed and it worked fine!
argh .. didnt help. I have another BT browser and it is not same as u have . And it creates not bluetooth modem but only a standart 33000 kbs modem
so , i need a driver for BT modem on Jam
When your Stack on the PC supports SSA, you can install a Bluetooth modem yourself. Just go to Hardware, select "device connected", then chosse "select yourself", then "Add new hardware", then select Modem then "select Modem yourself", search for Widcomm (maybe other Stacks work aswell), select Modem and then your outgoing com port! Then you should have the Modem available.
I think the radio version 1.12 didn't work for me either. Try installing the radio 1.13 (which I would recommend anyway) and maybe also the latest ROM version (I successfully use version 1.12).
You need some patience with that crap but it works.
Chaosmage, which bt software you using?
been using mine as a modem since february.
my way is similar to one above, except that I DO NOT turn the wireless modem on.
using the XP SP2 built in stack with an MSI 6967 dongle.
in bt services in control panel, pair the devices.
on device tab, highlight the device and click properties
go to the services tab and tick the DUN service.
click ok and wait for the new hardware bubbles by the clock to disappear
In phone and modem options in the control panel, click the modems tab
open the properties for the standard modem over bluetooth link
on the advanced tab, enter at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet" in the extra initialization field
click ok and then go to network connections
create a new connection that dials *99# using the standard modem over bluetooth link - vodafone would tell you to use a login and password of web, but that's not really needed as they don't use authentication (none of the uk networks do)
This i know works, cos it's how i do it, and also how i used to set them uo when i worked at vodafone in newbury.
Any q's, feel pree to PM!

Bluetooth / GPRS / Laptop / MDAII

And another question about bluetooth modem/gprs/laptop...
Even though I've read all (I guess) questions and answers here.
I want to browse over the internet using my MDAII as a bluetooth modem.
- My provider is T-mobile in the Netherlands
- MDA bluetooth is in discoverable mode
- On my Windows XP pro laptop I have paired my MDA
- I've got a bluetooth modem configured in Control panel with the string AT+CDGCONT=1,"IP","internet",0,0
- Number to dial is *99#
When I doubleclick the DUN I get a messagebox which tells me to pick up the handset, dail *99# and click OK. When I do that nothing happens and the connection is disconnected.
I tried to give in the phonenumber in a terminal window (ATD*99#), then I see CONNECT and the usual garbage, but when I close the window it is still disconnected.
A "query modem" in the modem configuration is succesfull. My laptop is able to communicate with the modem, but that is all.
What do I do wrong?
I've tried using an USB modem, but that gives the same result.
if you are using pocketplus or another program which close applications insted of minimizing them when you press the X
then i guess closing the connection windows would close the connection
Thanks for your reply.
I'm just using Wmodem on my MDA and a DUN connection on the laptop. Everything as simple as possible. The terminal window is an option from the DUN connection.

Tmob-Compact Usb modem

Hello all,
I know this has been covered so many times but I cant seem to get an all in one solution. I can find countless walkthroughs but no drivers anywhere.
I have Tmobile MDA compact which I want to use as a USB GPRS modem on either win xp or win 2000.
I dont have my CD so no driver. Does anyone have the USB driver or a link?
IF anyone uses this I would love to hear some success stories. I did try to do this 6 months ago on an old pc when I first got the device but no luck.
I would really find it helpfull if I could get this working today!!
Thanks!
Hi yarod_g14,
I use this for cheap, but slow internet access. You'll need to find the usb_modemdialler. I'll upload it this evening if you're still interested by then. It wasn't on the cd, found it somewhere on the web. Works great: start wireless modem (set accesspoint in the options) on the magician then connect usb start usb_modemdialer check accespoint & connect. If there's a driver too I'll upload it aswell, can't remember.
Cheers, M
Somehow attachments don't work for me.
That would be so appreciated!
Thanks very much!
If somebody needs: The HTC Modem Driver from the supplied CD, to use the Device as a modem on PC/Notebook

Hi yarod_g14,
I've uploaded a tiny zip file USBModem_Dialer.zip in the \USB_modem folder. It contains an inf for the modem & the dialer itself which requirers no installation , just run it. Remember to install the modem first.
Have fun, M
I have had trouble with this up until recently.
1st make sure your gprs connection works by itself on your PPC.
I disabled active sync over usb on both my PPC and my laptop from within active sync itself.
I then loaded up the Wmodem application on my ppc and clicked "tools" in this menu i checked "preset GPRS connection" and in the APN field i entered my APN name (for me it was orangeinternet) after clicking "ok" i was back to the main program screen.....i then clicked "start" and attached my USB cable to my laptop.
My laptop (windows XP) detected a new USB device, which i gave it the modem inf file attached in the post above this then gave me a "HTC USB Modem" in device manager.
Using the USBModem_Dialer.exe application, i had a drop down box at the bottom which was named "HTC USB Modem" and i changed the APN field to my network providers APN address (orangeinternet for me) my network provider does not require a username and password so this was left blank.
I then choose "Dial" after about 10 seconds my laptop causes my gprs connection on my phone to connect and then shows a stanard dial up connection icon in the taskbar.
Hope this helps!
Imp
Thnx Impossible,
U filled in the gaps. I included them as .pwi in the new zip upload (same name & place), so everyone can benefit.

Is there any way of getting the Magician to be a IrDA (Infrared) modem, instead of a USB/Bluetooth modem? I need it to be IrDA for my old laptop
Hi jainoxi,
Googling around for 'modem dialer ir' I found this: http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-39280.html
They're talking bout ir pda modem dialing mobile phones & required drivers, so maybe your wishlist is there discussed as well
Cheers, M
Hello!
Impossible: did you set up a new dialup modem connection before to connect the jam via usb?
I mean, i tried to use the jam as a modem. I followed your step by step tutorial. But it doesn t launch any gprs connection on my phone ;(
Could anybody tell me much about this?
thx by advance
This is how I make the connection:
- disconnect magician from usb
- disconnect from gprs
- start Wireless Modem program on magician
- check connection type usb
- check tools -> options: preset gprs connection & give in accesspoint name
- press start button
- disable usb connection in PC AS
- connect magician to usb
- install modem driver
(now you should see your htc modem in the modem control panel item)
- run usbmodem_dialer
- check the modem in the lowest box & access point in the first (tmo doesn't use user/password)
- hit the connect or whatever button to set up the connection, takes about 10 seconds
Now you're connected or you'll receive an error. I noticed that sometimes I have to add a ,0 to the init string from the modem (on the pc)
Does this help?
Well these are the steps i followed but it doesn t work...
I suppose it s linked to a msg appearing when i try to acces modem options configuration tab in the xp's control pannel. It says:
The phone and modem control pannel cannot be opened. This may occur some problem in the phone service' startup (sorry for my translation, in fact my msg comes in french as it s my os language).
So i ll stop with this, i ll format my computer in a month so I hope this will resolve this =)
Thanks anyway!
OK, then good luck with your re-installation. I guess you're problem relies in that area. Too bad cause it works fine.
Regards, M

Need Help - How to connect to the internet via Bluetooth PAN?

If anybody had managed to access the internet via Bluetooth PAN (via a PC ora BT accees point), then please provide explanation how to configure both: a PC with Boradcom stack and the HTC HD (which connection to use, how to use the Internet Connect Sharing on the HD, which IP addresses should be entered for the PAN network card etc.)
Your help is really needed
Thanks
I am sure this was answered the other day, do a search within the Blackstone forums.
Found it :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=470206
Yes, you are right. The opther thread title was about NULL MODEM, and could have been not clear. Due to the lack of help there, I did post this new thread with a more accurate title.
The problem remains the same. I still cannot access the internet via PAN. I can use BT ActiveSync to access the Internet , but this is not the right way.
Please, anyone who had succeeded, do post the steps to achieve BT via PAN
Thanks
Thats a really basic question. (your really did not find a answer on this forum?).
On ppc goto Programs/internetconnection/ and under connection choose bluetooth instead of usb. Than click connect.
On PC right click on bluetooth icon, chooce quickconnect to Network accesspoint.
Thats it. Of course you firs must pair device and set it to be"visible".
Thanks
I allready did that, I chose 'Network Access', under the Quick Connect, my PPC was detected, when I click on 'Connect' I get the message "Error creating 'Network Access Point' connection with device ,my device>" on my PC. This happens when I choose Serilal Port or Dial Up Networking too.
What am I missing?
Thanks
S u c c e s s
Thanks to you all foryour support.
The problem was with the BT stcak on my computer. I unistalled the Widcomm BT application and reinstalled it again. Suddenly, no more error messages. All is working ok.
Even I wanted to connect to my LAN internet connection on desktop over Bluetooth.
1. I have enabled BT on HD - Visible mode (No Bluetooth icon on Taskbar -- Why???.
2. Paired with Desktop - passkey exchange - Success.
3. Service Discovery - Two services found on THD:
a) Bluetooth PAN.
b) Bluetooth Dial-up networking.
(Please note - Object Push Service and FTP services are not there!!)
Anyway - Now if I try to Click Connect to the PAN:
"Establishing a Connection with ABX's Bluetooth PAN
..
Operation - Not successful. Please try it again..
I have soft reset HD and also reinstalled Bluesoleil on desktop several times.
Nothing seems to help.
As a side note
1.Even sending an object from Desktop is not possible as the Object Push Service is not visible..
2.Sending a text from a cellphone also fails - "Bluetooth Connection Failed"
I have "Obex inbox" installed if that information helps.. But the problem is there even before installing any app.
Is it that I got a stone instead of a "BlackStone" ??
Any help greatly appreciated.
Edit: Connecting Activesync over bluetooth worked. still unable over either ActiveSync-USB OR to do BT without Activesync
Any Ideas??
