the mainboard of the UNI has a slot free where a GPS receiver could be placed. Has anybody the information which chip could be pluged in there to have the UNI build in GPS enabled?

the missing chip is a RFR6250. This builds up the GPS backend for MSM6250 chipset.
But there will be no chance to use it, even with the chip soldered.
What is missing, is an ugly hacked radio rom to access the hardware in a proper way.
So if you're a genuis in hacking binaries, you're welcome

I'm sure i've spotted within another thread a picture of the board inside the artemis and trinity which basically showed them to be v similar... and an fm chip on the trinity board.
i'm going to be getting a trinity - probably the m700 when it hits the shops in london - but don't understand this fm radio thing (it would complete the product!)
does the dopod model not have fm radio on it's variant? if so, surely all trinity's do, no? is a variant not all about branding and software as opposed to the actual tecky stuff inside?
also, supposing the trinity doesn't have this fm chip... can we not get a plug which has the tuner on it then we just install some kind of software? - i'm thinking of these ipod remote controllers which give an ipod radio functionality.
great to see the gps problem solved - even if by way of leaked room - but lets finalise the trinity with an fm radio too!!

That is correct with regard to GPS we are still awaiting an update to enable this on your device.
The P3600 does not have an FM receiver. There is one in the P3300.

As we know Hermes has an internal gps but without the internal antenna that is necessary...
So has anyone installed such hardware?
It would certainly be interesting to know if with the external antenna the GPS would work. Looking at it I think it might, the only problem I can think of would be the device recognising the GPS. Great find!! Good on you!!

Looking at the product page on this antenna there are som pictures with it installed.
It attaches to the connector behind the rubber protector next to the camera.
Is'nt this the connector for external radio antenna?
Or is there any smart electronics that connects this connector to the internal gps module?

I wondered the same thing.
This has been discussed to death so many times. Most recently, this exact antenna was discussed in the Hermes Accessories section of this forum (use search, I'm not going to do it for you).
Here's the FACTS!
1) There is some of the circuitry (hardware) for a GPS in a hermes. Some is missing. This is most likely due to the chips that the hermes uses having multiple built in functions. One function was needed so they used a chip that just happened to have part of a gps built in.
2) Adding the rest of the gps harware isn't practical and has a 99.9% chance of destroying the device even if you are highly experienced in working with surface mount components.
3) Even if you added the antenna, etc. successfully there is no firmware to drive it. You still need to write everything from scratch and make the firmware work with the rest of the pda/phone. You would have to do this without benefit of having any existing source code for the pda. Good Luck
4) Assuming you managed to do all this, and plugged in this antenna, you would have a gps that needed this big ugly antenna wired to the phone. So why not just spend the $50 and buy a bluetooth gps that works without wires and doesn't need the phone modified?
5) The store selling this antenna have stated to queries (see other threads) that this antenna is for use when using an EXTERNAL gps with the hermes. In other words, some bluetooth and wired gps units that work with the hermes have an external antenna jack so that if they are used in poor conditions this antenna can be used to boost the range by placing the antenna outside the vehicle, etc.
6) You cannot use this antenna plugged into the hermes external antenna jack. it will probably destroy the phones radio instantly and permanently. In fact, its a very bad idea to use any external antenna with any radio that wasn't specifically designed for the radio. There are many reports of frying the radio by using 'universal' cell phone antennas.
In conclusion.... GIVE IT UP!

why would i install a wire to my phone if i have gps on bluetooth. makes no sense.

deach01 is correct. I agree the people selling this antenna should make it MUCH clearer as to its purpose.
To the best of my knowledge all development work has stopped, on getting the partial GPS functionality of the chip to work on the Hermes for the reasons deach01 states - it's just not practcal, and as said already the bluetooth receivers work well without major surgery to the Hermes.

If they used a chip and it had GPS as a bonus and they just ignored it, why then would the go through the troubleb of adding an external antennal connection and mod the device housing to accomandate it?
The external antenna connection is NOT for GPS. Its for the cell phone radio.

I thought it was so strange that when I scanned for bluetooth devices I picked up my (pc) internet modem (which is wireless enabled) so I thought bluetooth and wifi must share a lot of the same characteristics.

Seems If you have Bluetooth you also have wifi and possibly fm radio built in only lacking the drivers (no special wifi antenna is used in the omap 850 solution accoriding to TI)
It would seem that all we need is the right drivers and regsettings (so no new rom or radio rom should be needed)
Who can make it a working cab?

I thought it was some kind of cost saving to not include wifi, i.e. some missing hardware. If it's just a driver, that is the so friggen stupid! Why have such a great phone and then neuter it by taking away wifi? And the price is still just as high as the Artemis when it came out. The lack of wifi is the only thing that would keep me from buying one. Otherwise, it would be a great upgrade phone for me since I don't need nor have 3G with my service and and it has the cool flush screen that I wish my Artemis had.
someone knows if the touch dual then also could have the wifi option turned on by drivers? the touch normal has wifi, so i guess it should be possible.
anyone tried the drivers from the htc wizard? it also has a ti omap 850, so driver from such a rom could be coocked into the rom of other devices.

The touch dual uses the Qualcomm 7200 chipset. That chipset uses the arm926tesj as a co processor but i dont think its the full OMAP 850 chiset.
but there is a project for enabling niki wifi (started out as a project ot enabkle both wifi and gps)

Phone manufacterors do it all the time. Look at the Kaiser story, yes they have some great graphical chip (would be too expensive to make a different chiset with another graphical chip) so they just didnt include the drivers for it.
With some other phones like the touch HTC disabled the wifi in the radio rom... maybe some techies here could try to put an artemis radio rom in the pharos... but for none techies this would probably be an instant brick (thats why i didnt try it) tom_codon maybe you could say something about this....input would be apreciated.
Come to think of it, I remember that they had a crippled GPS radio or something in the TyTn I. The only reason I could think of for disabling wifi is so people who need wifi would buy the the Artemis. To be honest, if I had a choice btwn the two, I would get the Pharos over the Artemis if they both had wifi. Even so, it should still have wifi.

ive tried pm ing some guys working on the wifi on nike project, asking tomcodon. no response as yet and prolly not going to get one.
And tried to get qtopia and winlizard(gizard) working.
but in the linux world up is down, left is right, and smart is stupid. those people are (in dutch: contactgestoord) communicationally challenged. you cant find anything on their sites. there is no(or very little) documentation on how stuff works ...noone explains anything... so in order to learn linux you have to know it.
thats why m$ can afford to be so sucky: their competition sucks so much more
i said to the guys at irc #linzwizard hey thnx for the build, i can boot it too (gizard aka linwizard 0.3.0) but the touchscreen driver crashes.
he then said make a support request at sourceforge which i did (btw it isnt obvious how to .. it should be very simple. but hey... thats the linux way, isnt it) response was.. and this is a shocker.. your touchscreen driver doesnt work(.... grrreeeaat) you should disable it...(no description on how)

Not to rain on anyone parade but from the first page from TI, it looks like to get wifi support you have to have a special chip in the phone(upper left corner) thats diferent that the chip to get wifi, so unless someone knows for sure that the WiLink chips are present, I think we are without wifi

The only problem is... How long does it take to finalize such a ROM?
If it takes 1 yr, for example, I think I will have already changed to at least TouchHD..

Hello! I have a HTC Pharos for one month. Yesterday, i accidentally have wetted phone by tea, and then i disassembled it for cleaning. Cleaning was finish sucсessfully, now phone is working
During disassembly of the device I have made some pictures. I think Wlan module is in the device. Look at the photo! Motherboard have many connectors for external antennas, and Wlan connector is on the board!

thank you for the picture, its in a good resolution! but what would have made it more clear is if you would have looked for a specific Texas instruments chip with letter combinaton BRF or BL (there are 4 chips mentioned with a dual solution BL6450 BRF 6350 BRF6300 and BRF6150 last one is not good because its a bluetooth only chip) we should also be looking for TI chips with a WL designation and number 1271 1273 1251 1253
at least (BRF6300) - Bluetooth specification v2.0 + EDR single chip should be in the Pharos since we have that bluetooth spec.

I recently had to replace my speaker on a verizon xv6700
To my surprise i think the cameria flash board has a GPS reciever chip layed out but no components. It looks like the board is missing the GPS chip (6 pin IC with 4 pin metal cover/shield) itself and what looks like a serial level shifter (10 pin IC)
Tracing it briefly i can only seem to find a DATA IN (gps to phone) I was hoping to locate the DATA OUT (for programming the gps unit) and once located, send some test data to the GPS port and capture it on an oscilliscope - this would confirm that this is infact a real GPS chip layout and they never put the chip on due to cost or some other factor.
This means once we figure the pinouts you can get any old GPS reciever chip and solder it onto this board and enable real GPS
has anyone else noticed this??

Did you add in the Broadcom proprietary binaries? I suspect that your answer will be yes, but I've never looked in the AOSP tree.

Hello, i found the "Bug" on my Nexus 7 - and it was Hardware.
There was simple no Connection between the GPS Antenna in the Backcover and the GPS Receiver on the Mainboard.
How to fix this? Pull off the Backcover, locate the GPS Antenna. Then locate the GPS Antenna Contacts on the MAINBOARD, and bend them upwards a bit, so that they will connect to the Metall Pads in the Backcover.
