Closing open applications with "OK" button - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Can anybody suggest a program that will allow me to minimize applications by tapping "OK", and also allow me to close them by holding the button? I used to use SmartKeys with my old Wizard, but I'm using a Herald now.

yep, search the forum for hbutton should be version 2.2 i think, allows you to assign up to 5 functions per button, the nice thing is that if you just want 1 button reassigned it won't screw with your other butons. when you install it i adds the ability to minimize or quit. so it will do exactly what you want. also can be set to vibrate or beep when the button is held down to signify that the second function is being run.

Just for knowledge quick menu 2.7 also allows telling the ok button to close apps.

the simplest PBAR

Looks nice. But by "OK" button, I'm talking about the hardware button itself.

for me Hbutton is working, just assign "OK/Close" to the OK button, that's it... (it's my 2nd Hbutton recommendation within 2 minutes today )
When you're using HTC Taskmanager with "End programs by tapping X" it's working great with Hbutton. Never tried without HTC's TaskManager

Thanks for the advice! However, will it allow me to tap OK button to minimize then tap and hold to CLOSE? I played with it before but it seemed like when I assigned "OK/Close" to the Ok button, a single tap CLOSED the application. Basically I want the two opptions on one button, and to never have to touch the X button ever again.

You have probably seen a lot of suggestions thus far but this is probably the easiest. HTCTaskManager does exactly what your looking for by default. A press minimizes and a press/hold closes.
Small foot print. Easy to use.

I want the OK button to EXIT apps!

Does anyone know how to ALWAYS make the "ok" hardware button exit any running applications? I basically never want to have to use my thumb to touch the X onscreen to close an app ever again.
By default all Windows Mobile devices leave applications running when you press X. I turned on HTC's Task Manager so that when I clikc the X it exits the app. But even with the HTC task manager setting on, if you use the hardware "ok" button the app is still running in the background.
Is there a way to edit the registry or something to make the hardware "ok" button always EXIT whatever app I'm running??

You can assing Software to the hardwarebuttons by "start - settings - buttons" then choose OK-button and assinge HTC X-Button to it.
Try AEButton Plus (http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php) to connect the button to an "real exit"-Application, like VJok-Button (http://www.vijay555.com/?Releases:VJOkButt)

Have you even TRIED what you're suggesting? This does not work. The HTC exit button program is not in the list, because it's not a normal program, it's like an addition to the windows mobile OS. HTC task manager isn't' a program that stays running. it's a setting, so it ain't in the list.

Indeed - i never uses HTC taskman. I´m using I launcher. But there are 100 programs for closing apps that you can assing to the hardwarebutton. VJ is one of them.
And no. I didn´t try it before posting - because my Terra is dead.
But I wanted to give you the hint that there is a possibility to assing different programs to the OK. button.
lol

Mapping Execute Button to open Start Menu?

M'kay. I was looking at an assortment of "remaps your softkeys" programs, and I'm either too stupid to see it, or it doesn't happen. It's also possible I'm searching using the wrong terms. I am a little slow sometimes...
I want to press the center button on my dpad, and have it open the Start Menu. I'm using WA2 to gain cascading menus, and I'd love to be able to completely launch a program without using the touchscreen or pulling out a stylus.
If it's already been done, can someone please point me to it? If it hasn't been done, whose butt do I need to start kissin'?
Here's a shot of what I'm talking about, just in case my mis-speaking is confusing you. When I press that button, I want that menu to open!

have you ever heard about smartskey???

Good luck

Yes, I've heard of it. No it's really not the answer to my prayers.
I don't really care for the smartskey method (it would take too long to explain, but I don't like it, and that should suffice for explanation), and I don't get why you can't remap that center button...it doesn't do anything in the Today view (or much in anything else, other than "execute" whatever is focused).
Thanks anyways for the reminder. If all else fails, I can fall back on that as an unsatisfying workaround.
Got any other suggestions?
M'kay, it's not freeware, but it does have a free trial. AE Button Plus is capable of doing what I want, within reason.
I have to double click my center button (reserving single click for selecting highlighted items, etc.) to open the start menu. I'm actually okay with this as a solution.
Still, this program, as good as it is, is more bulky than I'd like (nearly 1/3 MB!) for such a seemingly simple action. I'd expected this to load pretty small, and was surprised by the relatively large package.
I know it's cheap of me, but I'd still welcome any (free/smaller footprint) alternatives to this...
Try HButton it does everything and more, i love this app.
you are able to map 6 apps on 1 button and you can even use your slider to scroll.
check this

At first blush, this appeared to be what I was looking for. However, I cannot figure out how (if it's even possible) to reassign one of the five HButtons to activate from the center button on the dpad, or how to distinguish that from, say, clicking the dpad once to OK a procedure or popup message.
Not really interested in clicking and holding (for example) my Messages button to open the start menu.
I feel rather silly for being so picky, but there you have it. I'm picky.
After wrestling with all of these, I'm slightly embarrassed to say that charly_mx had the best suggestion, right off the bat. It's not perfect, but launching Start from my left soft key isn't terrible, just not what I wanted.
Sometimes, you just don't get what you want, so you take what you can get, and so I have done that.
Apologies to anyone that I annoyed (esp. charly_mx).

how can I close program with "OK" button?

Hi,
I want to close program (and not just minimize) with the hardware "OK" button. Is it possible?
thanks
Use HTC X-Button for example
Are you sure? I try but I found no option to do this. Just for the "X" button but not for the hardware "ok" button.

Just go to Settings > System > X-Button and choose the Button tab.
Then you can select "End programs by tapping the x":
Should be the same action if you use the hardware or the software button imho...

edit:
ok, just tried and you're right, using the hw-button doesn't close, just minimize....
But i am also using HButton (cannot live without this great tool), with Hbutton mapped to button 3 (that's my ok-button) it's working fine....
And it's also fine with Hbutton: when you're on the todayscreen, the tasklist in the upper right opens by using the ok button....that's very comfortable.
ok but on my device I can't assign action for all these buttons, I just can assign action for the 2 buttons on the right side : camera button and the other one(with 2 fonctions : tape, press&hold)
you are looking in the wrong directon. go to settings>system>task manager, then check -Enable the X button blablabla- checkbox. choose the method and have fun
This is the same that i already told him in my post #4.
His problem is the hardware-button. That was the same "problem" on my device.
Tapping the ok button on the screen closes correct, but using the hardware button just minimizes.
In addition with Hbutton now my hardware-ok button also closes correct.
@nicolaa: I'm using another phone (Artemis), can't you just assing hbuttonX to the needed button ?
It does not matter which Hbutton you're using, you just need to map it to the needed button in wm.
for example/better understanding: you can assign Hbutton5 to Button1 in WM, that's no problem.
sorry, i posted my reply after seeing your first post (you mentioned x-button instead of task manager). alternatively, he can use spb pocket plus plugin, after installing it assignes _close_ action to _ok_ button by default.
actually i see no point in closing apps constantly (which of course in most cases are frequently used ones). is is enogh to periodially close all active programs from memory menu. IMHO.

I really missed a working actionscreen on the TP2.
Due to the new Bluetooth driver the one for the Xperia wasn't working anymore.
You made me as happy as with your ROMs back then
sorry, but can you tell me what is it and what does it do?
(sorry for my english)
Have a look at the screenshot. It's an action screen that allows you to select certain actions like new SMS, appointment, task etc.
Works nice! Good to see my BT is working with this version.
Gonna make some changes myself:
- Left softkey to ActionScreen
- No conformation for soft reset
Attached the left softkey for who's interested.
Works fine!
Especially the one-click Wifi switch is very clever.
The only thing is the problem of hitting the powerbutton while typing in landscape mode.
It will launch this app while you're chatting, very annoying.

Hello,
This tips is good if you do not use the TF3D ... otherwise it is replaced by the one from the TF3D ...
Do you know where to modify it in the TF3D ?
Thanks.
Personally I am trying to avoid pushing any buttons, I'd rather have an option on the screen like a shortcut in the Start Menu or something.
Would that be possible?
Hello,
In the start menu, it is a shortcut. Not so difficult. After installing the cab above, you will go to "\Windows" folder and you search for "HTCActionScreen.exe" then you make a copy and after you go to the "Start Menu" folder and "Progams" folder and you make a "Paste shortcut".
And this is done.

I think that's the point, if he's anything like me, everytime I type in landscape mode, I accidentally end up holding the power button for 3 seconds with the side of my finger, I'm forever turning of the phone .
Nice app though, just going to put it on.
For those that don't want to confirm the Soft Reset action:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Biotouch\ActionScreen\APP_10]
"Param"="/s"
Attatched the REG file for those that want to import the file to the registry.
Don't forget to make a soft reset afterwards
This is awesome! I would love to have this app. Is there any way to make the icons a bit more colorful? Thanks so much!

Touch X Powerbutton actionscreen ver 1.2.cab by smaberg is an excellent application and well worth installing.
Install it to device memory and then soft reset. Now holding the right most button (screen on/off) for about 3 seconds will bring up an action screen where you can toggle many functions as well as soft resetting your device or turning it off.
Works perfectly on the HD2 and I would recommend it

Why not just turn it off and then on again, using the power button?
If your device is so frozen that you can't do that, you'll be unable to access any applications to do it either....surely? Or am I missing something here...

Just press one of the volume buttons on the left side and select "off" or "silent"
I realy dont see the meaning of a link button for a soft reset when you have the "long Power" press button. Its hardware and its responding even when the screen freezes (sometimes ). And overall this "reset links" cannot save you of case removal when the pda is "software dead".

Old thread, I know. Just resolved the same issue with TCPMP. Went almost to the factory reset. Accidentally fixed it by connecting to PC over USB. Immediately unfreezed and never occurred again since.
