OK, this may just be a Pocket PC thing rather than a specific XDA II thing but I'm not sure.
Can anyone tell me if their XDA is learning frequently used words that are not in it's dictionary. For example, my name's Ravi and after a couple of weeks of typing emails, letters etc all ending '... Ravi', it's still not learnt the word. All it suggests is 'Ravaged' (!!)
This morning, I got a bit fed up of this so I created a note and typed in 'Ravi' about 100 times and guess what, it still doesn't learn it.
Is there a trick to getting the dictionary to learn new words or is it just my name it can't stand !!
Maybe someone else can try this and see if it works !
Ravaged
Ravi,
Did you ever sort this out?
I would love to enter a few words (including my name!) in to the database
Ashby
Check out Fitaly. 60 days trial. You will be able to build own shortcuts. And I think it's a much faster SIP then the others.

I'm not sure if the XDA learns new words by itself, but you can add words. Not sure if there's a simpler way, but this (rather complicated one) works:
- open any transcriber-aware application
- write the word you want to add, using keyboard or transcriber
- mark (highlight) the word
- switch to transcriber; if the second row of icons is not visible, tap on the hand icon
- tap on the icon with the red check mark to open the "corrector window" (not sure if this is the correct translation for "Korrekturfenster" ); the highlighted word will appear in the new window
- double-tap anywhere inside the word.
- in the menu that (hopefully) comes up, chose "add to dictionary" ("Dem Wörterbuch hinzufügen")
Voila, you're all set!
But please be careful - I didn't yet find a way to remove words from the dictionary...
Cheers
Daniel
many thanks,
ashby
Never sorted it out - everyone I spoke to said that the OS doesn't add new words. I'm just about to buy Calligrapher - I tried the demo and it's amazing - I'm not sure that this feature is available on this program either though. I guess I've just given up adding new words but I will try Daniel's method outlined above.
BTW I tried Fitaly and what the hell were they thinking ? Is it supposed to be an easier input method than what we have already or is it just designed to fry your brain ?!!
TenGo's pretty decent though !
thanks all

Getting Word Completion to learn dutch!
Does anyone know how to change the word completion dictionary on my Qtek 2020 / PPC 2003 to another dictionary / language?
It is said that in PPC 2002 you could swap the file \Windows\user.dct, but not on PPC 2003 (the file is apparently not there).
Try out WordLogic: http://www.wordlogic.net/software.html
Not cheap, but works very well!
i'm using an arabic rom, but when entering text in english, using the standard windows mobile keyboard, i do get the regular pop-up menu with predictive text, but the problem is that the dictionary never learns any new words. for e.g. after typing wanna in a couple of msg's, the next time you start typing wan, i never get wanna in the list, just the standard words that came with the original dictionary??? is there a fix around this??

Not sure if this will help depends on the keyboard your using, on mine just above the letter keys when you start typing it shows a bar with the letters typed on the right hand side it shows a (plus) sign click that and then you can add your new word then click the (Tick) sign
Like I said it depends on what keyboard you are using
Another option is you can search for eT9MyWords this is a program on my ROM which allows input of new words
Hope that helps
ozmoran is correct. On a lot of roms you need to actually enter the word for it to be stored in the memory banks. When you start to type a word, click on the + symbol to the right of the input box. Now type word you want again and from then on it will be saved for future use.
All words saved are saved into the eT9MyWords program which can be found if you go to (depending on which rom your using) Start > All programs. If you open up this program you can also physically add more or delete saved words
Hope this helps
what you guys are describing is when one is using 1 of the htc keyboards, full qwerty, or compact qwerty, but that doesn't apply to the standard windows mobile keyboard; on this keyboard you dont have the horizontal bar with the + sign on the end, and i did try entering the words myself into eT9MyWords, but as i said that only serves the htc keyboards...

Ha Ha roger that
Eureka, i just clicked on the clear stored entries, which is found under settings/input/word completion, and since then, the phone seems to have miraculosly remember any new words i type.
thanks alot for all your thoughts guys.
i use the standard windows mobile keyboard, b/c i have been doing that for so long now, i very comfortable, knowing where every key is, and i'm used to the gesture's too. i guess it just an old habit.
again thanks

Excellent, glad you got this sorted.
Obviously path you provided depends on rom your using. This path doesn't exist for me and predictive text works differently on rom I use. I'm assuming your using stock rom?
yes it's a stock ROM. i didnt want to venture into cooked ROMs, so as not to void my warranty, and luckily i havent, b/c a couple of months ago i had a problem with the LCD screen, and i got that replaced at no charge.
All phones I've had over the past god knows how many years have all had the ability to automatically save any new words that I might type, but my HD2 does not seem to do so.
What I mean by this is that if I type a word that is not in the phone's dictionary/predictive text, if I manually typed in the word without the predictive text it would remember it for next time, and each time after that. Or in the case of the iphone it would remember it and be able to use it in the auto correct feature. However, the HD2 doesn't. Can you set it so that it does? I've seen in the hints and tips section that you can manually add to the words recognised by predictive text, but not found anything that suggests how it can 'autosave' words.
Any ideas? I'd be amazed if a phone like this hasn't got this feature, as like I said you've been able to do it on other phones for years.
Cheers

It learns gradually from your typing and language style. There is no way to force a word into the dictionary (through the UI), but if you've typed it a few times, and selected it from the suggestions, it just starts to show up. I think it's just a list of suggestions sorted in the order of most commonly used.
It does for me.
You write the full word and it appears as a marked word(as seen in pic nr one). When it does just press it ones and the next time you begin writing it it should suggest it(pic two).

Hmm, mine doesn't seem to do that. When you write the word for the first time do you have it in XT9 or ABC mode?
Also I've just noticed your name. Are you named after the town or the furniture?
I believe that the suggestions are add automatically... To see and add directly..
Navigate to the windows directory and look for
"eT9MyWords.exe"
That will launch the application with the words in.
i know it's EXTREMELY minor, but is it all at possible to turn off the auto-cap of the first letter? i don't ALWAYS need it and it can be quite annoying. TIA!
Try this: Settings/All settings/Personal/Input/Options and there you go !

i don't even see an 'all settings' option, though i'm assuming it'd be because i'm on the US tmobile hd2/different rom perhaps? either way, this is super annoying. does ANYONE have a fix?
lol, sorry but I think it's kinda funny how people are hating on the HD2. I'm posting this from my HD2 and i love it! the all settings button shows up under the menu in the settings. hope that helps
hating? i don't see anyone hating on the hd2 in this thread. a year ago, in fact, i owned the htc touch hd1 as well. i'm definitely a fan of the 'hd' series, i just like to customize my phones to my liking. and yes, unchecking the "capitalize first letter" in the input area didn't fix it for me either.
quite a sad nuisance you're having.
riiiiiiiiiight. thanks for the bump.
@ce_rob
I just got my HD2 a couple of days ago and found this site yesterday, and I've just read alot of threads that were complaining about the HD2. Sorry if I thought you were hating. Actually, I see your problem and I second the motion. I guess I really never noticed it, but yeah, outside of the sms and email (probably office too), the first letter won't be capitalized, even if the box is checked. Hmmmmmm....

oh i agree, i've seen quite a few people complain. they're always welcome to return the device and purchase something else...sadly, they'd rather whine about it first.
and yes! it can be annoying when unnecessary! i hope someone comes up with a fix for this, as small and insignificant as it may be..
You are not searching deep enough!
On Sense move all the way to the right -> Settings Tab
Click Menu -> More
Click Personal
Click Input
DONT click the Options field but the Options Tab on the bottom of the settings page.
Uncheck Capital letters
This MUST fix the problem - at least it fixes the problem in the default keyboard!

Just wondering ...
Why on earth would anyone want to disable the auto-cap for the first word in a sentence?
The first word of a sentance has been capitalized since the dawn of the Latin alphabet (includes English).
Why would you want to turn it off?
(shaking head)

though it's impossible to understand why people like you feel the need to give your input when completely unnecessary, i'm sure it's happened since the "dawn of the Latin alphabet," as you so cleverly put it. thanks for the bump, i guess it wasn't a complete waste of time.

Becuase eg. in Danish we put dates as "d. 27. marts" meaning the 27th of March. In this case I would like it not to start "marts" with a capital letter since it is not a new sentence.

So in Danish you don't use capital letters for proper nouns? Well I never knew that.
Anyway, the suggested settings change DOES WORK. If it doesn't then you have a faulty device and should return it to the supplier. Ask them for the "non-capitalized" version.
I think there's plenty reasons why people don't want the first letter capitalized. I have found the need myself many times. Agree with you johncmolyneux, it should work when you have the settings done. Try a soft reset after making the changes Jawb. On my TyTN II I have the same setting and it works.

No we dont. Person and location names we do but not names of e.g. months, days and languages.

I actually didn't comment on if it worked or not. But I have tried it and even a soft start won't make it work. At least not in Sense.

Well, I had never thought of that.
I WAS WRONG, AND I APOLOGIZE FOR MY EARLIER COMMENT.
I'm curious, even though there is no space between the period (.) and the word marts, does the HD2 still capitalize marts? I thought, in order for the HD2 to "think" that a new sentence has begun, there would have to be a space after the period. Is this not the case?
I'm going to try with my phone.
Be back shortly ...
---------------------------------
I'm back. I did the test and my HD2 DOES NOT capitalize the word "marts" in the example 27.marts, and I have it set to capitalize the first letter of new sentences. In fact, here's what I wrote:
This is a test. However, if we type 27.marts, will it capitalize marts?
No, it didn't!
But, when I wrote the following:
This is a test. However, if we type 27. marts, will it capitalize marts?
Yes, it did!
So, what I wrote originally still applies. I can't see a reason why you'd want to turn off this feature. If someone can give me an example, I will bow down and apologize again.
Peter
HI All I am a noob to the Arc, I literally just took it out of the box and started using it. I find it too be AMAZING. What a phone it is! However, I have one question when using the New word prediction thing, if you cannot find the word in the list how can you opt to spell it in and add to the dictionary , I am googling it now trying to find it but having trouble.
Thanks so much all and Hi I'm Amanda from Australia

You need to add them to the user dictionary. Go to settings>language and keyboard> user dictionary and add the words.
From my experience, words that aren't in the dictionary already pop up as suggestions the next time i try to type them. My word suggestion setting is "sloppy typing without auto correction". You can find it under language and keyboard> default input settings > quick text settings > word suggestions.
hope it helps
The easiest way is to disable all this
If I understood you correctly then,
Just type what you want to and press space, if your word is changed to something unwanted just press backspace... you will see your word....
Thats it... Your phone learns new words... so next time you type the same thing you will see your word highlighted in the suggestions...
Hope I could help...!!1

Give Swiftkey Beta X from the Market a try...its free for now and is really impressive. It will automagically learn your typing habbits. Ive been using it for a week and cant imagine using another keyboard.
