Getting Word Completion to learn new words! - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

OK, this may just be a Pocket PC thing rather than a specific XDA II thing but I'm not sure.
Can anyone tell me if their XDA is learning frequently used words that are not in it's dictionary. For example, my name's Ravi and after a couple of weeks of typing emails, letters etc all ending '... Ravi', it's still not learnt the word. All it suggests is 'Ravaged' (!!)
This morning, I got a bit fed up of this so I created a note and typed in 'Ravi' about 100 times and guess what, it still doesn't learn it.
Is there a trick to getting the dictionary to learn new words or is it just my name it can't stand !!
Maybe someone else can try this and see if it works !
Ravaged

Ravi,
Did you ever sort this out?
I would love to enter a few words (including my name!) in to the database

Check out Fitaly. 60 days trial. You will be able to build own shortcuts. And I think it's a much faster SIP then the others.

I'm not sure if the XDA learns new words by itself, but you can add words. Not sure if there's a simpler way, but this (rather complicated one) works:
- open any transcriber-aware application
- write the word you want to add, using keyboard or transcriber
- mark (highlight) the word
- switch to transcriber; if the second row of icons is not visible, tap on the hand icon
- tap on the icon with the red check mark to open the "corrector window" (not sure if this is the correct translation for "Korrekturfenster" ); the highlighted word will appear in the new window
- double-tap anywhere inside the word.
- in the menu that (hopefully) comes up, chose "add to dictionary" ("Dem Wörterbuch hinzufügen")
Voila, you're all set!
But please be careful - I didn't yet find a way to remove words from the dictionary...
Cheers
Daniel

many thanks,
ashby

Never sorted it out - everyone I spoke to said that the OS doesn't add new words. I'm just about to buy Calligrapher - I tried the demo and it's amazing - I'm not sure that this feature is available on this program either though. I guess I've just given up adding new words but I will try Daniel's method outlined above.
BTW I tried Fitaly and what the hell were they thinking ? Is it supposed to be an easier input method than what we have already or is it just designed to fry your brain ?!!
TenGo's pretty decent though !
thanks all
Ravi

Getting Word Completion to learn dutch!
Does anyone know how to change the word completion dictionary on my Qtek 2020 / PPC 2003 to another dictionary / language?
It is said that in PPC 2002 you could swap the file \Windows\user.dct, but not on PPC 2003 (the file is apparently not there).

Try out WordLogic: http://www.wordlogic.net/software.html
Not cheap, but works very well!

Simple contacts app iContact (v0.5) (xPhone alike)

Hello,
I wrote a simple contacts list app for WM5 but i've tested it on HTC Wizard only. If anyone is willing to test the app on their device I'd be very thankfull.
The app is very basic, it only lists contacts in scrollable list. I use it for accessing my contacts by scrolling the list with fingers, similar to *Phone. Just tap, drag and release. To select a contact, just tap and release, and standard contact details dialog should appear.
Exe is in the attached zip file.
UPDATE v0.5, 02.03.2008.
Changes:
- iContact should now be visible in task managers
- added application icon
- alphabet grid can be shown by clicking on ABC button. It stays shown until letter is selected, or you tap on an empty space
- little bit more usefull "Details" screen.
UPDATE v0.4, 09.11.2007.
This version should fix a bug or two, but may introduce some as well. It should fix the most obvious bug with contact name length.
It also introduces a way to look into contact details. But is merely a test and isn't very usable at the moment. Tapping on the contact name will open standard pocket outlook contact details.
Have fun.
UPDATE v0.3, 08.09.2007.
Sorry to say that iContact didn't go very far, but still, i wanted to give you guys an up-to-date version (if anyone is still interested )
There are few changes and they're all very obvious, so, have fun.
UPDATE
- 05.05.2007.
v0.2
App is now known as"iContact".Main changes would be landscape fix and (Oh, My, Oooh) WM2003 support.
As i don't have wm2003 device there are probably still some bugs, but at least it should start, show contacts and scroooooolllll...
The little indicator on the right side has some bugs, i know. But, as it doesn't affects the other app functionality I let it live.
Post your opinions. New features will be discussed when main part of the app works (almost) bug free.
Thx for all your comments. That motivates me the most.

It looks cool!
I sort my contacts as a "File As". Any change you will add extra options to this program?
One thing I've noticed is that contacts who only have an e-mail address appear as a white bar, maybe an option could be to filter contacts?
But again, nice Beta!
Thx for the response. It's my first pocketpc app, and first c win32 app, and first c app ever. So, I'm just starting to learn
You're right about blank fields. It only reads first and lastname from the database.
I didn't understand the "File As" sort option. Do you care about explaining a bit. (Sorry, english isn't my native language).

What is your native language then?
The file as sort option is like this:
Doe, John -> Last, First
John Doe -> First Last
I'm using Inesoft Address Book, it has an option to sort contact like "File As" this way all contacts are displayed the same way as I saved them
Croatian is my native language.
Adding sort options shouldn't be that difficult so I guess I'll implement them in some phase. I'm still experimenting with more fluid scrolling.
Thx,
larna
Nice.. very nice! Smooth scrolling effect too. Start fast works well. Ought to post a video up.
Wish list:
Do you think you can add the photos onto the list? Or it will make the software ultra slow?
I think that would slow down the app considerably. It's already a bit slow on my Wizard running on 180 MHz, but it's fine when overclocked to 240 MHz.
But, I can't say I'm 100% sure it wouldn't work. I'm still a newbie.
Thx for comments!
larna
Looks very cool, a couple requests
1) can you make a command line option that filters the list by category? I've got a lot of contacts, but I have a category called Phone for ones I want to get to quickly. Unfortunately the regular contacts app always forgets this filter so it hasn't been much use so far.
2) I see a lot of blank items in the list, if the name is not valid maybe use the "File As" field as someone suggested, or look through the other fields maybe. I use just the company name a lot on businesses. "File As" is probably the way to go though because that is what shows up in the regular contactrs program I think.
Thx for suggestions, I'll be sure to take look at that.
Stay tuned for next version

just tested on HTC TyTn...
it works... but scrolling does not work!
I am trying to make the same simple app using java
having problems with the API's (JSR 75) not being on my phone
Have you done anything like this for java?
And yes, I did separate post a thread for it here!
Many thanks, and good luck!

Sorry, didn't even come close to java. I can only wish you best luck with your project.
Regarding scrolling, can you select a contact by tap onto it's name?
Thx,

Tytn wont work? what your Rom?
my o2 Trion (Hermes100) cingular rom aku 3.5.2 work well with smoth scroll
nice 18k app !
edit: what's your program language to make this app, this is simple, small and super!
you can make Windows Mobile an Iphone Killer keep up your work and ideal!!!
very nice app, works on my p3600.. continue this nice job
Thx guys/gals for your comments.
I used "c" with pure win32 api. I thought that would allow me a greater freedom in dealing with Windows shortcomings and greater speed. I guess i just feel there is something wrong with CF.NET

ScrollWindowEx on a SysListView right ?

Well, no.
On WM ListView can only be scrolled one item at a time, not by certain number of pixels. For example, if ListItem height is 30px, if you try to scroll it with ScrollWindowEx by less than half the height of ListItem (15px) it wont scroll. If you scroll it by amount greater than half of the item height it will scroll one item. I don't understand why MS made it like that, but that's how it is.
(If I'm wrong with this, it would mean that I spent a lot of time for nothing )
Instead, I made the ListView height equals all the items that should be displayed and scroll the ListView container (parent) window. On a pixel by pixel basis. It has it's own shortcomings, but the end result is definitely better.

Interesting thanks
i found a little bug... rotating screen don't display all contacts and not update lines of listbox... if it start with screen already rotate lines on listbox are correct but don't display all contacts of my list
Heh, that's just another one in the row...
I guess I'll have to fix that one also.

Another idea A way to change colors of background and text would be cool for all the people who like to skin

automatic word filling

Hello everybody,
i am new here and just got a touch hd , i can not get one thing running. Before this one i got a tyntII this one remembered words i used before while typing a sms, de touch hd does not do it. I got automatic wordfilling on. and downloaded a dictionary cab, but won't work . Do i do something wrong or does it not work on touch hd . I have a dutch version ..
gr. john
You have to turn on T9, after that it should remember and suggest the words you try to type.
I agree with nhoj71
The TyTN II implementation was much better.
In additon to the autocomplete function of the HD does it was able to remember words and short phrases that one had written before.
For example if one wrote "hello world" a couple of times the next time one started to type "hello" it would also offer "hello world" as a suggestion.
Is there any way of implementing this on the HD ?
When i type an url opera would suggesties previously typed urls, but entire phrases is not possible due to the space key, which ends a word entry.
Seen this thread? => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467984
It might solve the issue you have by giving you back the old word completion mechanism.

problem with predictive text

i'm using an arabic rom, but when entering text in english, using the standard windows mobile keyboard, i do get the regular pop-up menu with predictive text, but the problem is that the dictionary never learns any new words. for e.g. after typing wanna in a couple of msg's, the next time you start typing wan, i never get wanna in the list, just the standard words that came with the original dictionary??? is there a fix around this??

Not sure if this will help depends on the keyboard your using, on mine just above the letter keys when you start typing it shows a bar with the letters typed on the right hand side it shows a (plus) sign click that and then you can add your new word then click the (Tick) sign
Like I said it depends on what keyboard you are using
Another option is you can search for eT9MyWords this is a program on my ROM which allows input of new words
Hope that helps
ozmoran is correct. On a lot of roms you need to actually enter the word for it to be stored in the memory banks. When you start to type a word, click on the + symbol to the right of the input box. Now type word you want again and from then on it will be saved for future use.
All words saved are saved into the eT9MyWords program which can be found if you go to (depending on which rom your using) Start > All programs. If you open up this program you can also physically add more or delete saved words
Hope this helps
what you guys are describing is when one is using 1 of the htc keyboards, full qwerty, or compact qwerty, but that doesn't apply to the standard windows mobile keyboard; on this keyboard you dont have the horizontal bar with the + sign on the end, and i did try entering the words myself into eT9MyWords, but as i said that only serves the htc keyboards...

Ha Ha roger that
Eureka, i just clicked on the clear stored entries, which is found under settings/input/word completion, and since then, the phone seems to have miraculosly remember any new words i type.
thanks alot for all your thoughts guys.
i use the standard windows mobile keyboard, b/c i have been doing that for so long now, i very comfortable, knowing where every key is, and i'm used to the gesture's too. i guess it just an old habit.
again thanks

Excellent, glad you got this sorted.
Obviously path you provided depends on rom your using. This path doesn't exist for me and predictive text works differently on rom I use. I'm assuming your using stock rom?
yes it's a stock ROM. i didnt want to venture into cooked ROMs, so as not to void my warranty, and luckily i havent, b/c a couple of months ago i had a problem with the LCD screen, and i got that replaced at no charge.

Text Input question

All phones I've had over the past god knows how many years have all had the ability to automatically save any new words that I might type, but my HD2 does not seem to do so.
What I mean by this is that if I type a word that is not in the phone's dictionary/predictive text, if I manually typed in the word without the predictive text it would remember it for next time, and each time after that. Or in the case of the iphone it would remember it and be able to use it in the auto correct feature. However, the HD2 doesn't. Can you set it so that it does? I've seen in the hints and tips section that you can manually add to the words recognised by predictive text, but not found anything that suggests how it can 'autosave' words.
Any ideas? I'd be amazed if a phone like this hasn't got this feature, as like I said you've been able to do it on other phones for years.
Cheers

It learns gradually from your typing and language style. There is no way to force a word into the dictionary (through the UI), but if you've typed it a few times, and selected it from the suggestions, it just starts to show up. I think it's just a list of suggestions sorted in the order of most commonly used.
It does for me.
You write the full word and it appears as a marked word(as seen in pic nr one). When it does just press it ones and the next time you begin writing it it should suggest it(pic two).

Hmm, mine doesn't seem to do that. When you write the word for the first time do you have it in XT9 or ABC mode?
Also I've just noticed your name. Are you named after the town or the furniture?
I believe that the suggestions are add automatically... To see and add directly..
Navigate to the windows directory and look for
"eT9MyWords.exe"
That will launch the application with the words in.

Word completion on HD2

Just switched to HD2 after Tytn. I like it a lot except one thing: the word suggestion on HD2 is noncence and also very disturbing while typing.
For instance if i would start to type "hello" it suggesting "bell"
if i start to type "button" it suggesting "bury" ant "nutt". Total noncence
How to get old good word completion which i had on WM 6.1 in email app and IE?
Any help would be greately appreciated!
any solution?
or may be someone can recommend another keyboard similar to HTC default one, but with good word completion? Swype has good word completion, but this keyboard functions in totally different way..
this is strange - no one need this great feature? before my HD2 i got a SE Xperia X1. the HD2 beat the X1 all the time - but on the X1 Rom's (also 6.5) the word completion feature works very well.
i don't understand thats why HTC disable this great thing!
sorry for my bad english and grammer - but i am a KRAUT
i hope there is anybody out there who can bring us back this kinda helpful thing.
cu
Tastenchef
the word completion may be cranky at start, yet on my italian setup I noticed it will start suggesting first the words you use most often, so you probably just need to give it more time
