Sorry for such a newbie question - but which app is everyone using to access the registry?
Many thanks
Chris
Total Commander http://www.ghisler.com/ce.htm is freeware and works a treat.
Thanks!
Chris
p.s. is there an app which can be run from a pc to do this (i.e. over the usb connection to the wizard)?
Hmmm, i tried Total Commander on my new O2 Mini S (WM5, English IMate ROM) and couldn't get it to work. is anyone else having this problem? anyone know of another reg editor that works on my device?
Thanks.
lskb
I don't know of any software for editing the registry via USB connection, sorry.
wubaguba
Did you use the tcmdpocketarm download from http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm for install from the device?
HTH
wuba.. could you tell us exactly what part of it isn't working ?
I've got it installed - and it works fine.
If you want to edit the registry, go to the "\\" dir, then enter the registry.
I don't use it for editing the registry, though - it's not really well-suited for that. I do use it for *searching* the registry, however - as it's just VERY fast at that (it'll find all hits and display them in a list on the screen).
For the actual editing, I use PHM Regedit - it's free
http://www.breaksoft.com/Blog/Utilities/2005/1/Mobile_Registry_Editor.aspx
Try this one - it is based on the PC and works across the USB
Thanks, flashgordonv, I had found the Mobile Registry Editor site but the user comments seem to suggest that it doesn't support WM5. Have you used it on a WM5 device?
Chris
i use PHM registry editor, and am happy with that.

Sure....I could not go back up the directory structure when trying to locate a file. that was the main issue but there were other minor annoyances like not being able to see the bottom of the screen after my windows keyboard popped up. the version i tried was this one...
http://ghisler.fileburst.com/ce/tcmdpocketarm.exe
Btw...i couldn't get to the PHM editor via the prior link but this one worked...
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/phmregistryeditor.shtml
Sorry, can I ask the dumb question about which of the many cab files it produces I should copy onto my Qtek9100?
Just to confirm mobile registry editor works fine. I recreated my comms manager entry with it yesterday.
Joe
Most registry editors are compatible with WM5/ the Wizard. See http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/menneisyys/UltimateRoundupOfRegistryEditors.asp for more info.
What version of the wizard have you got mobile registry editor to work on?
I get access denied when trying to write to a HKLM value on a VARIO 1.6.2.4
Do we need to unlock RAPI?
If so how is this done?

Did you do it with the desktop-based MRE? It indeed won't work - HKLM is protected against outer access (see this article for more info on this new, WM5+ protection). Do it from a PPC-based registry editor - I've tested with Resco and it works flawlessly.
I use ROM version 1.5.X so that I can write to my Extended ROM. Hope this works with 1.6.x too. If not even Resco is able to modify anything under HKLM with ROM version 1.6.x, let me know.
Yes I can use local PPC based reg editors ok to edit the HKLM hive, but I wanted to get the PC based one working as it is more convenient to remote edit.
On the MRE web site it talks about blocked remote access and MS tools to reconfigure RAPI, was wondering if anyone had managed to find a configuration that worked.

It doesn't work with remote editors. Dunno whether this restriction can be circumvented. Use a PPC remote controller app (see http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=514&more=1 ) for this to make your life easier.
Hide/Show Hidden ROM (at least works on my TyTN - German ROM)
SHOWN:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\AutoLoad\EXT_FLASHDRV] "Bootphase"=dword:00000002
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\EXT_FLASHDRV] "MountHidden"=dword:00000000
HIDDEN:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\AutoLoad\EXT_FLASHDRV] "Bootphase"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\EXT_FLASHDRV] "MountHidden"=dword:00000001
For me this was the default:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\AutoLoad\EXT_FLASHDRV] "Bootphase"=dword:00000002
So, I only had to change this from 1 to 0:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\EXT_FLASHDRV] "MountHidden"=dword:00000000
Now I can see the extended rom, my device is an HTC TyTN WWE, I will post the ExtROM to FTP in a while.
I also have updated the wiki page with your hack:

Thanks!

GREAT !
Now we still need 2 very important Registry Hacks (or missing links to get them work):
1. A hack for presenting a differentiation between GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA
2. A hack for invoking the EngineeringTest Mode
I've been unable so far to get that working on the Hermes platform. Keep trying.

Thank you.
I finished uploading my ExtROM, I also created a wiki page with the contents of all the available Extended ROMs on FTP so far:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtendedRoms
If anyone has a different version not listed, please do the following:
1) Unhide it
2) Zip it
3) Upload it
4) Update the wiki page
Thanks!

Heh, youre busy one.
I added a registry tweak to change the titlebar clock to an annalog one, if someone is interested.
Hopefully we can keep the wiki growing and useful.
My default setup was also:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\AutoLoad\EXT_FLASHDRV] "Bootphase"=dword:00000002
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\EXT_FLASHDRV] "MountHidden"=dword:00000001
So I just changed to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\EXT_FLASHDRV] "MountHidden"=dword:00000000
and did a soft reset. The extended rom then appeared but it was still write protected. How do I get rid of the write protection?
LJ
Use the cab file in the wiki, it unlocks and unhides ExtROM.
After using the cab fille and/or making the tweaks myself, and the are the same as described as above, the result is that I can see the ext. rom, but it is still write protected. I can't delete any file or write a file to the ext. rom. I've got a Tytn WWE. What is the problem, or better: what is the solution???
Should be wrtitable using this cab:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Hermes/Tools_and_Programs/HERMES_MountExtROM.CAB
If it's not, then try to hard reset and then use the cab without messing with registry keys before.
Problem with Extended ROM
I have tried all the methods in the wiki and also all the reg. edit trick but I still can't see my extended ROM. When I run the cab to Mount Extended ROM it crashes my TyTN. Locks it up befor making it to the windows screen. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this or tell me where to look? I was going to mess around with bootloader but I am not that computer savy.
hard reset and install the unhider&unlcoker cab file. it should work after hard reset.
Have tried to Hard Reset my Taiwanese CHT9000 and only apply the HERMES_MountExtROM.CAB tweak, now can see the Extend ROM, but still cannot "unprotect" the ROM. Cannot make it writable. Any other methods? Like modifying the registry? Thanks a lot in advance!!

On my Vario 2, when I'm using 3G (and therefore, HSDPA) the [3G] icon is shown in the top bar (and when it connects a small connecting icon with the moving arrows and 3G in it is diplayed, next to the square 3G indicator) - when it drops back to GPRS, it just changes to [G].
Does yours not do this?

Unsure whether it works myself, as I've not tried it yet, but I'd put (a small amount of) money on it that it works
Hi Chris, Thanks for your reply!!
Unfortunately, my device is still un-protectable after following the whole process. And the registry settings I have checked are exactly the same as the described. The Extended_ROM directory is still write-protected. Couldn't add or delete files in it.
Maybe I am the unlucky one that couldn't change the extended ROM at all...
Since the digital signature security autentification for CABs in ExtROM is on by default, putting in any CAB file that is either not digitally signed, or loses its authenticity because it was modified will not be installed during the Customization phase after a hard reset.
Any ideas how to solve this problen on TyTN?
There was the soluton for the Universal devices wiht the Default_Signed_DisabledSecurity.CAB. This CAB has the right signature for Universal, but it dosn’t work on TyTN.
From this MSDN discussion about Windows Mobile 5 code signing,
"Looks like you won't have to sign the cab if wceload.exe isn't used to install it. Although if it is used to install the cab file you will need to sign it."

A possible gap? If someone could come up with a third party CAB installer that could be used during customisation, maybe it could bypass the official CAB installation procedure (and therefore the signed certificate verification) entirely? Just a thought.
For Universal this problem i think was decided here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33638&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=150) with the help of Default_Signed_DisableSecurity.CAB. But this CAB not work on my TyTN. I think it because of wrong digital sign.
Hey folks, quick question:
At some point in the last couple of months, after fiddling with the registry to figure out how to get aGPS working with cell-IDs... I seem to have "lost" my iPAQ File Store. I didn't really use it for much, but it is screwing up my SPB Mobile Shell file explorer now that it's missing.
Anyone know a quick fix to get it to show up again? I don't even care about the files that were in it before, I just want it to show up as a folder/option in my file explorer again...
Glenn Finockio
I have no solution for your problem...
But can you tell us anyway how you managed to get the cell-id stuff working?

I haven't gotten it working yet.
try check for your reg on the following key (or similiar):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\TRUEFFS_DOC2\FATFS]
"MountAsBootable"=dword:1
"MountAsRoot"=dword:1
"MountAsRom"=dword:0
"MountAsHidden"=dword:0
"Folder"="Flash Disk"
"Folder"="iPAQ File Store"
"Name"="FLASH Disk Block Device"
If it isn't there, should I try and add that registry entry?
"Note for users new to Windows Mobile you will need a registry editor to find and edit files beginning with either HKLM or HKCU and a file editor that can unhide system files. Resco supply both apps and are recommended but are not the only apps out there. All registry entries are in red."
Hi all,as this is my first window mobile phone,i do not understand what the above means and how they will help me.Can someone explained further.
Also,can someone advice a link that is similar to a dummy guide for window mobile phone.
Thks all for helping in advance

As this is your first windows mobile phone, I would strongly recommend ignoring that 1st sentance, and just enjoy the phone as much as possible. Then, when you know it better and have some idea what you'd like to do that it won't let you, come here and search for things (only ask after searching fails to find anything ).
If you've not had a windows mobile phone before, jumping into editing the registry and modifying system files is a 100% sure way to brick your phone. It's easy when you know how, so take your time and learn.
Other than that, welcome to XDA and the world of Windows mobile
Quite a lot of the registry tweaks can be don't in a user friendly way using a program called BSB Tweaks.The latest version is 1.6, so have a search for it here and install on your HD2.
That will probably keep you tweaking safely for a will.
thks for valuable advice,as now,i have come to understand why do i need to install the registry editor,however,i do not know the history of the window mobile phone,so can someone enlightened if there is any version on the registry editor and where can i get this.
Thank you in advance
There is a beta version of the Resco product you mention, which can be downloaded at their forum. This is the most convenient on your new touch capable device.
Please remember that playing around with registry settings can brick the system. In such a case, you will have to hard reset your device.
Also, I can only second what the other posters already recommended. Get to know your product step by step, especially with registry changes. Once you understand, it is no magic thing.

PHM Regedit "Import" grayed out
I am trying to import some previously saved reg files to my HD2. I just installed PHM Regedit from this thread but Import is grayed out on the Tools menu.
How can I import a registry file? Running the reg file directly opens PHM Regedit but does not import.
Thanks in advance!
I have used Win mobile for 4 years now, but just found XDA for 2 months ago.
So I searching for a guide 2 resco, so that i can unlock Bubble breaker + Solitere
And make screen prints like others on this side.

Hi guys...
I hate the search sensor button, on my Omnia 7...
I accidentaly pressing it all the time, I want to disable it, or even make it work differentely...
Is there any way, how to change its functionality?
And theres another thing... How can I change the default search provider via Registry on the DFT rom?
I found this tutorial, but cannot find that registry keys, shown here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...99&postcount=5
Thanks for the answers...
Nobody answers, but finally, I found the solution, how to change the search provider.
On mango, just add the registry key:
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchProviders\Google]
and there a new value of:
"URL"="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=&q={searchTerms}"
Don't forget to set the Search provider in Settings - Applications - Internet Explorer...
And it's done
im on DFT rom but i can't do anything in registry. when i try to add new value registry editor is closing and phone going to home
@ Jonage - Thanks man, this works with me
@ eselcuker - please check that your phone didn't relocked after you first connected it to Zune after flashing DFT rom. For the Sammy Rainbow DFT ROM, you need to make changes on the registry by deleting the value on the PortalUrlint and PortalUrlProd both are under the DeviceReg before connecting device to Zune otherwise it will relocked. Please read the thread on the Sammy Rainbow DFT to find out more.
