Has anyone started working on a wm6 port for the iPhone? Man, that'd be great to use this fantastic hardware with some flexability, upgradability, etc... Don't get me wrong, this is a great device, but let's face it: all it is, is an iPod with a phone built in and a few bells n whistles. You can't play with it the way you can a wm device!!
Any takers???
rofl.
this is quite funny - 2/3 of posts is about iphone solutions, and now i can see this post
i don't think thats possible...
who knows if the chipset is even compatible.
the only thing i would like to see ported from the iPhone to WM6 is the Safari Browser... that would be the only thing.
I can live without "Kinetic" Scrolling.
I have to agree with nothin its funny over 3/4 of the latest additions upgrades and themes all have the iphone touch to them and theres this guy asking to port our crappy MS interface to an iphone?? (BTW i love my crappy MS interface cuz theres so much i can do with it unlike the iphone which is "what u see is what u get" there aint much extra u can do with it)
Yeah but once you port WM over to the iPhone - you can skin it to look like an iPhone! If you figure this out, we outta all chip in, buy two iphone and send a fully skinned WM6.1 iPhone to Billy G (Stevie B now?) and Steve Jobs - maybe MS will get the hint to make cleaner better looking programs and Apple will take the hint to allow it's user's greater flexibility!
Quite frankly though, I suspect you'd have an easier time installing something like XP Embeded on it but that's just my 2 cents!

Not true if you're willing to void the warranty and risk the issues in OTA upgrades. Not THAT far from how Verizon sees things, in some ways.
The *nix aspects of that thing are amazing. Unlock it and aim it at the internet and get MENUS of things to load with no "where's the cab file" or "how do I install this thing" issues.
A super-geek at the office got one and had all that stuff going while still running over WiFi (I guess, since he hadn't activated it yet). Impressive looking stuff if you're *nix savvy.
OpenBSD is indeed powerful and i would rather have THAT on my XDA II instead of WM6 on an iPhone.
The iPhone is a piece of useless crap unless you jailbreak it, and that does not conform to my understanding of freedom & flexibility.
In WM6 i just drop CAB's onto my Memory Card, execute it and then i'm good.
Maybe i could have looked over these shortcomings if the price was REASONABLE... which it's not.
I can get a TyTN II here in Germany for half the Price of the iPhone (around 160 Euros) with a contract.
If you try to get the iPhone without a contract, then it rips a 999 Euro Hole in your Pocket... and before i do that, i'll just save my Money for a TyTN II.

untrue. in Herne a guy sells iphones without contracts for 450 €.
All I was saying when I started this thread is the iphone hardware is better than anything we have on the market now, and I like using WM6 because it's so flexable and you can have some real fun with it, and I'd like to join the two. If you enjoy your iphone the way it is, then this thread isn't for you...
Impossible? Compatability issues? HA! Me thinks not!!! That's what *DRIVERS* are for. They just need to be written, that's all. Good grief... WM6 is SOFTWARE, and so is iphone OSX. If some hardware, or firmware or software concept works under one, it can BE MADE TO work under the other. Just takes some imagination, some want-to, and ignore they nay-sayers.

No! Not the interface... THE ENTIRE OPERATING SYSTEM!!! And while we're at it, lets make a totally new interface, like HTC's TouchFlo, so it's not so crappy, ey?

MY POINT EXACTLY!!! Thanks dude
Anyway, I for one would love to run WM6 on the iphone, and no, I wouldn't skin it like an iphone. I don't want my WM6 pda to look like an iphone, even if it is one. I'd much rather see a totally new solution, like HTC did with the Touch, only way better than the Touch or the iphone. Not impossible... Y'all take care now...
mate. if the best developers here, who ahve years and years of experience cant write drivers for the kaiser and other similar devices hardware video acceleration, when if im honest, theyve been working on pretty similar devices for years.... how on earth are they meant to write drivers for an unknown chipset unknown processor, a touchscreen which no windows mobile device uses and a bunch of other stuff...
and its not like an iphone developer rather then a wm developer could write the drivers, because
a) the platform is very young, closed and nobody has much experience even writing programs for it, let alone drivers.
b) why would they want to, all iphone owners are fanboys and hate wm just because its wm.
Plus..... even though the real osx has been ported to pc's, it doesnt have many drivers at all, no wlan drivers and many other things missing... And, pc driver writing is so much more established than ppc writing, but they cant write drivers for the full osx, how will it be easy to write them for a downsized osx...?
Im not setting out to flame, its just to point out that its not exactly commonplace to port an os with full compatibility to another device which was before incompatible...

GREAT WORDS!
exactly!
Hey all! New here and will be ordering my G1 within the next week or so. Before i purchase it, i just have a couple questions and what-not.
-I have always been into modding things whether it be phones, PS2's, game-boys (haha) etc. But what i am not familiar with is rooting and how it will change the usability of the phone itself.
-Next, if i were to root it, i understand you basically re-flash the firmware. Well if i were to re-flash the firmware, would i still be able to have the t-mobile branding to keep the myFaves and all that?
-I'm going to be getting a decent sized memory card for it and i would like to know which capacity i should go with. 8gb Class 6 or a 16gb Class 2?
-As far as protective screens are concerned, i see there are many out there. which one provides the greatest coverage, is the cheapest, and is the most durable?
-Recommend me some must have apps for when i get it. I have been reading about Locale and ChompSMS so those are definitely going to be used. Any others i should know about?
-And lastly, what are some things you guys "dislike" about the G1? And on the other hand, what are some things you absolutely love?
Thanks in advance for the help guys! I have been on these forums a lot in the past looking at the Tilt and such and it seems like a good community.
Regards,
-Billy

In reverse order of your questions:
I LOVE ...
1. The quality of the phone - phone calls are better sounding than on any phone I've had during the last ten years or so. It brings in a solid 3-bars in my home area whereas my brother's T-Mobile phone barely works here. The cell radio is excellent!
2. Open Source Linux - what more can I say other than this is the best gosh-darn handheld Linux computer around. I like being able to work on the phone through a telnet or adb session from my main computer.
3. Google - This is the best smartphone if you are a Google-phile, and like to keep your emails, appointments, tasks, and other PDA functionality AUTOMATICALLY synchronized between the smartphone and the Internet.
4. My Innocell 2600 mAh battery - It cures the poor battery problem, plain and simple.
I HATE ...
1. The Camera - WAY TOO slow to be useful. This is one area that is in great need of being fixed.
That's it! Enjoy your new phone as it will only get better with time!
Its more complicated than just flashing but more than doable and worth it! You will not lose your myfaves unless you go to adp rom. Stick to the rc roms and you will not lose myfaves. As far as apps go follow this thread for some ideas. Also look around the dream section, all your questions and curiousities are well covered here lol. I love g1 best phone I've ever had.

Rooting gives you complete, unrestricted shell access to the device. With this you can do stuff well beyond what the stock firmware is capable of such as tethering the phone to a laptop for internet access and custom themes etc.
-Next, if i were to root it, i understand you basically re-flash the firmware. Well if i were to re-flash the firmware, would i still be able to have the t-mobile branding to keep the myFaves and all that?
You keep everything. JF's RC33 ROM is based on the official firmware which is tweaked, resigned and released.
-I'm going to be getting a decent sized memory card for it and i would like to know which capacity i should go with. 8gb Class 6 or a 16gb Class 2?
I would go with the 8gb because its faster but if you have a large music collection you want to carry around with you, the 16gb would be the obvious choice.
-As far as protective screens are concerned, i see there are many out there. which one provides the greatest coverage, is the cheapest, and is the most durable?
Not sure. I don't use protective cases because they make the phone look ugly IMO.
-Recommend me some must have apps for when i get it. I have been reading about Locale and ChompSMS so those are definitely going to be used. Any others i should know about?
CompareEverywhere, Shazam, Tether, SnapPhoto are all good apps that just about all G1 owners should have.
-And lastly, what are some things you guys "dislike" about the G1? And on the other hand, what are some things you absolutely love?
Like:
- The android platform. All of the default Google apps are incredible and you can get many more great apps in the market.
- Hardware Keyboard
- Bright, vibrant touchscreen that is capable of multi-touch like the iPhone.
Hate:
- The Battery (as soon as you turn on Wifi, Bluetooth or GPS functionality your battery won't last more then 24 hours). If your willing to almost double the size of your phone, you could get an extended battery to solve this.
- The design. As soon as a Blackberry style Android device comes out, I'm probably going to jump ship.
- T-Mobile USA. Don't expect them to help you with much, as they are clueless about anything related to Android.

Rooting the phone will give you additional options that you can not do with a stock phone. Wireless tethering, adjusting the browser for auto-rotate, and multi touch are some examples.

This would depend on your use style.
- ChompSMS is good,
- Wifi tether for root users (from the XDA-Developers forums)
- I like StarDialer because I am very used to dialing by name on my Windows Mobile Devices.
- gmote is great for being a couch potato
- The weather channel app.

Dislikes:
- Battery life. It is simply not good.
- The touch interface is taking getting used to. i am used to the styles and precision of a stylus enabled interface. The touch screen of the G1 (and iPhone) feels imprecise to me. The worst frustration for me is my inability to click on links in the browser without zooming in first. i am getting used to it though.
- The GPS and Google Maps combo does not compare to TomTom on my Artemis.
Likes:
- 3G wireless. This is my first phone with it and I like the speed a lot.
- Wireless tethering. Very cool and painless way to tether.
- Google Market. Has all sorts of neat stuff, much of which are free.
- overall UI. It is responsive, intuitive, and quite pleasant to use. I much prefer it to Windows mobile though I do miss some of the apps I have gotten used to over the years.

Not sure what you are asking here... The HTC battery that comes with the dream is 1150mah and is included with the device. The extended battery which is not made by by HTC is 2600mah, almost double the capacity of what HTC offers. If you care more about battery life then style, go for the extended battery.
The hd2 is probably by far one of the most perfect windows mobile phones out there, I've had soo many before it and they were rubbish in terms of performance.
but, the quirkiest problems are really destroying my joy with this phone. I can't seem to get all the apps to work with multiple languages. I can't seem to get a decent battery life when I'm travelling, now I have an extra battery and a heavy Duracell battery pack.
Great camera, yet it's still having the same problems I've had since the beginning of wm phones (slow with low light conditions) and no 720p video recording. There are no decent applications for the life of me. (I've been ruined by that from the iphone)
I hate how WM7 looks, with no skinning allowed, I'm pretty positive I don't want colored boxes to be my home screen. Also the fact that it's receiving less and less support from developers everyday, it simply isn't catching up to anyone anytime soon. (I have the feeling it's going to be delayed, because of the kin disaster)
I'm thinking I'll be selling this phone in approximately 2 months. I'll sell it here if anyone would like it.
Thinking of getting the new Galaxy S series phone, best hardware around with a mature (but not ancient) operating system.
Note: I'm currently in the middle east thats why it seems I've posted this early, it's 3:45pm over here.
ehhhhh,,,, everyone wants something different in a phone. Personally I thought the tmo roms were rubish. I loaded some custom roms and like almost all my problems went away immediately. Not sure about other languages because I'm pretty stupid and can't even speak 1 properly. Support I wouldn't worry about. Yes many people are jumping ship and going to android development but we still have some of the best guys still working with WM. Also a reason we don't have the devs staying with wm is many of the programs are final and work perfect. Why make a 28th wm music player? Android is great and all but I don't see it as great as everyone says. Yes its fast and optimized but its almost a cross between WM and iOS. After every thing I heard about android I was quite surprised when my friends got them and had them locking up and glitching as much if not more then a wimo phone. I almost bought one till my coworker bought an incredible and basically killed his battery in 2 hours listening to pandora, then had to pull the battery after he checked his tweets. I also feel once WP7 comes out it will renew interest in coding for WM. I feel we will see the same stuff we saw in vista and XP where the coders took the best features of Vista and added them to the stable XP OS. I'm hoping we will get the cool WP7 roms and they can whip out the spatula's and blenders and get to work on a frankenstien super os.
The ROMs have saved this phone, but as an Android fanatic, the apps, and ease of discovery/installation of apps has ruined me.
I've got my phone posted and I'm hunting for someone with a Nexus One thats willing to trade with me adding some cash.
I'm not giving this phone away because hardware wise HD2>>>>>>>iphone/nexus one, etc. But if I can't get Android soon I'll be dropping this phone.
But thanks for all the help guys! Its because of this phones quirky issues I discovered this site! lol

I want a better phone, that's definitely what everybody wants. Not a half-a$$ed phone that goes for the same price as a phone that has god-like script that allows unlimited multitasking with no loss of battery or memory
I feel WMP7 is following the suit of the iphone, having a very limited way to customize, and having people to jailbreak it if they want the full potential of the phone, chasing update after update and looking for compatibility and cracks... that's why i left the iphone... (I had 2g but my family has a 3g and a 3gs)
I feel the android is king right now because it allows enough customization for developers to mess around with, and has great functionality out of the box without having to chase down problems.
Our family consists of 4 HD2s, and 2 iphones. I regret purchasing the hd2s since they have brought me more trouble than ever, my mother asking me about navigation while my brother and father require language packs THAT DOESN'T WORK.

Well, wm6.5 for example, no decent games, no decent applications MADE FOR IT SPECIFICALLY. Before, I thought backwards compatibility is a positive, I'm quickly realizing that it's the worst negative. Companies are getting lazy by creating something thats made for a wm2003 but compatible up to WM 6.5.... how is that even possible? At least upgrade the graphics for newer phones.
HTC is even embarrassed by wm6.5, they skinned everything from top to bottom.
HD2 was dead on arrival in my book, it packs a punch in hardware, yet it will be obsolete within months.
I'm sorry if I sound like I'm trying to burn anyone here, I really appreciate the work everyone has done. I donated money and time testing, commenting and helping.

While I agree the phone is superior, the apps/ or lack of apps for this phone and its ****ty OS are going to be the death of it.
Even with the custom ROMs, I still have quirks like dropping 3G coverage, text messages coming in out of order, apps crashing, occasional restart (admittedly rare with the custom ROMs)
I have spent HOURS just to get this phone to do what it should do out of the box. And now that its finally working great, I discover it was pretty much in vain because I can't even fill cookie's home tabs with apps that I want and would use.
I think it really just comes down to WM is not as user friendly as Android or iphone. They have basically taken the computer out of the phone and made it super easy for anyone to install anything. I don't know what you guys are talking about with android phones and battery life. All the android phones I've seen running HD2 specs kill the battery in half the time of the HD2. I see it everyday at work when I'm the only one with a phone at the end of the shift. Now about your 3G issues that sounds like your carrier or location issues. I'm rock solid (H) 24/7 365. Take into account how android going to be when they get upwards of 500 phones on the market and glitches and bugs. WM runs on thousands of phones with minimal bugs. Android from what I've seen has about the same amount of bugs but with many fewer phones. iPhones do tend to be less or non glitchy because they only support 4 phones, much like their PC's. I think if you take the time to properly hook your HD2 up and learn a bit more about these new gen phones you'll be happy. You need to search out WM apps, but there are literally tons of them out there to do anything you could imagine. Most of these new inovation droid and iOS are claiming to invent have been on WM for ages. Please please please try out Kumars rom, experiment with a couple different tmo radio's for your area, and keep track of what is setting of your bugs. Usually you just need to change one program or setting and it fixes itself.
Going on like 16 days without a reboot! Yeeehaw. My tab slider does have a touch of lag though now but I'm gonnna hold out and see how long I can run it without a reboot.
One more thing, people with preformance issues have found replacing the SD card with a fast one works wonders. I haven't tried it yet but I am gonna toss a 8giger I have lying around in it to check it out.

How many apps do you want? How many apps do you need?
I have about 500 apps in my WinMo download folder and about 50 on my phone, don't use a third of them ...
Shear number of apps do not make them better .. Now I am not bashing the Android, it is a good platform, but the "Appstore" argument is so Iphone-ish.
I am not going to try and "Talk You Into", keeping your HD2 it is your phone you need a phone you can use, if the HD2 is not for you then it is not, BUT it is not a ****ty OS, that might be your opinion, but for the people that use WinMo on a daily basis and want the power of and flexibility of the WinMo OS it works great for them.
Android, simple interface, great, fast , fairly stable, locked down, big brother back door, MUST have gmail account to activate the phone, so that "Big Brother" can access your phone remotely.
WinMo, More complicated interface more like a portable PC than a Phone, customizable right down to the OS by the user, no external account needed, no "big brother" install apps you want and not have them removed, as of June 2010 Microsoft still has a 90.18 market share of PC's, so WinMo is directly compatible with 90.18% of the PC's in the market.

Apps like "fring", yeah we have that app... from 2005. Tt doesn't have video conferencing... that's a major feature missing.
It's as simple as that, we have the same apps, but they are outdated and lack many features that we'rent possible before.
How is the "appstore" argument so "Iphone-ish" thats the worst argument I ever heard. It's soo much more superior than what we have now.
You sound like a person that steals applications more than he buys... 500 apps, yeah and you bought them? I highly doubt you bought 5. App stores are a godsend for developers, they make a decent amount of money and it protects their investments, encouraging them to create more applications. That's why the app store is so successful. You're only complaining since you've barely bought any apps for the PC or your PPC, so you find the app store "iphone-ish" w.e that means.
I admit I'm being too harsh for no reason, and I also admit I don't usually buy them, but for decent applications I do happily purchase.
These are the only decent applications I use often, but I wish there was more, and I wish the prices were more reasonable, 30$ for an app? are you serious? The prices for the ppc applications are overblown. Spending over 100$ on applications on a phone is a little ridiculous. I haven't spent that amount on applications for my laptop.
- Handy Safe Pro (bought it twice, for different phones)
- SPB Traveller
- SPB TV
- SPB Backup (Fantastic application)
- SPB Wallet (Waste of time and money)
- Office Mobile (Hell no I didn't buy it, can't believe they actually started charging for it)

I love how some people hate the HD2 and others love it. It's funny to hear people's stories, because it seems almost random, the chances of you having an HD2 that works flawlessly or doesn't work at all...
I came from the rooted G1 and I love this phone. Rooting android and flashing custom ROM's became nothing but a headache for me. My phone would never work right and every time I flashed a new ROM (with dozens of "flashed ROM, it's FLYING, fastest ever!!!" replies in the threads getting me all hyped up) phone would run smoothly for maybe a day but after that nothing but hang's, random reboots, f/c's, etc...
With my HD2, it's been the opposite: OS runs smoothly, I can pretty much do what I want (except for stable flash support in Opera, for some reason that still alludes people...none of those opera builds with flash support ran as well as stock opera and fixoperaflash is all buggy..very irritating) and I don't have to continually reboot or wipe the phone.
Yet I read people's comments that talk about how the phone is virtually a big paperweight right out of the box...go figure...

Well, since my stock HD2 has had none of the problems this person mentioned and has actually been a very good phone why sell it? Obviously, there is a variable here that is not common with all HD2's, so why give up so easily?
Wait till you get your new one, use the stock 2.13 and see how that goes. If you still can't stand it, then try cooked ROM, and if you still can't stomach the site of that 4.3" screen, then go ahead and sell it...

I want a better phone, that's definitely what everybody wants. Not a half-a$$ed phone that goes for the same price as a phone that has god-like script that allows unlimited multitasking with no loss of battery or memory....Well, wm6.5 for example, no decent games, no decent applications MADE FOR IT SPECIFICALLY.

I can definitely agree with Metallic-Force on most of his arguments. Even though this phone can do just about anything and everything, and even though it can run smoothly with custom ROMS, and even though it has awesome hardware......I just still can't look past the fact that the apps for this phone looks like absolute crap. Not only are there limited apps made for the HD2 specifically, but most of the apps that we can get for this phone (via marketplace, omarket, or warez) looks like the sh*tiest graphics I've ever seen on a mobile phone. I wish HTC would skin all the apps available for this phone as well as they did for the OS. I'm not even talking about the "crazy 3d" games that rock on this phone (cause I don't care for them), I'm talking about simple apps or games like Pandora or Moorhun. Microsoft or HTC needs to invest more money into the devolopers if they have to to make this OS more appealing app-wise. That way we can all finally say how great it is to own a WM phone.
OK, done venting.
Stable Android.

I don't see whee you guys are getting android phones are so bullet proof. Everyone I've seen has reset problems and lock up problems. Thats just gonna keep getting worse as they release new phone after new phone. Personally on wimo I can't live without.
1. PSX emulator,
2. Core Player,
3. Mortplayer
4. Hava Player
5. PDF reader
6. Wifi Router
7. GPS weather Radar
and lots more. When iphone or android can run a 2gb divx with AAC audio without charging $20 for an app call me. Till then its wimo.
lol... I'm going be receiving my hd2 this week, and your ditching it. It's funny, but android isn't that awesome the people make it out to be. That's why I'm going back to windows mobile ( windows phone).
Anyway, good luck.
Coming from years of Windows Mobile devices and then a few months with the Iphone 3GS, now yesterday I receive my new Galaxy S from o2.
First thing you notice is just how identical the packaging is to the iphones, how similar the look of the phone, but that's were the similarities end...
For a start you actually get a little guide booklet which is actually quite helpful, not being used to Android, fantastic something desperately needed on the Iphone an removable battery and additional memory via the 8GB card that was supplied with the phone. Then WOW, this phone even with its battery fitted is so very lightweight you hardly feel it in your pocket.
Then you turn it on, greeted with a very flashy Galaxy boot screen, I can't believe my eyes at just how perfect and vibrant the screen is, the extra size, vibrancy and pure resolution over the 3GS is quite simply amazing.
Took me a while to work out that you have to turn of USB debugging to allow access to being able to browse through a windows explorer or the downloadable Kies software, this is what I have missed using the Iphone, being in control of drag and drop music/stuff onto your device, I actually feel like I own this device.
With the restrictions of having to use Itunes which I have never really liked.
Been playing around with these widget things and installing software from the market and loving the live wallpapers...
My first GPS test this morning - very positive, read here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7563359&postcount=515
I have got a lot to learn with Android, its more like windows mobile than IOS4, yet it seems stable and quick compared to windows mobile, yet gives you more freedom than IOS4, at this time and I know its early days but I keep asking myself why I didn't move to Android sooner, hope I haven't bored you all too much...

You haven't bored me at all.
I have had exactly the same experience as you. Most people on this forum make it sound like this device is terrible, so it's nice to see someone who hasn't had any real problems and is happy with it. I was starting to think there was something wrong with my phone in that it was actually working.
probably they came from the Apple clouds, that's why.
I came from the Windows World, and this phone is simply magnificent.
It could have been better, if they didn't decide to release so many different variants and Data freqcuencies 850/1900/2100, 900/1900/2100, 850/900/1800/1900
i like the UK version so much because it's unlocked but runs only on 1900, but the Bell version has 850, but locked, and the USA 850 versions has a lot of missing stuff (buttons, front camera, etc), also Locked
but all that aside, software wise, and funtionality wise, this phone it is one tiny little beast, the Android market has more and more software by the days, and accessories are plenty, in fact i got all my accessories before the phone even arrived LOL
but definitely, being able to drag and drop stuff directly to the phone without Itune or Kies it's perfect.
i was surprised to find out the phone even have 5.1 surround sound option when you plug in the headset, it is on the manual, i was bored and started reading the manual
LOL

Not to mention radios, currently got the WCDMA thing going on in Korea. I think it's actually a WCDMA/GMS combo, but I haven't been able to confirm.
From the manual:
사용 주파수 범위 (Frequency Range):
WCDMA 1900/2100
GSM 900
DCS 1700/1800
US PCS 1900
*note, these are actually my rounding/interpretations of the ranges they list, I think it's easier to read than the exact number ranges but I might have misinterpreted 1 or 2. I can post the exact numbers if anyone is interested or can shed light.
*Edit* - Also the 2 variants on the way for U.S. CDMA and 4G. Well, they wanted to sell 10M, it's kind of good for us since we will get more XDA support and people have been successful modding the I9000 root to work for the initial US launches.
Pwew I've just ordered the Galaxy S on Friday and after looking on here at all the complaints I was getting very jittery. I'm the same as you chaps a windows fan and still love my HD2, but its time for a change so Im glad its not all doom and gloom
Thinking about I don't normally comment on something when it's all ok, only when I start getting problems so it makes sense I suppose.

The polls here asking if people are happy typically indicate that people are happy with the devices. It seems that some people haven't tried to get new devices if they had very buggy GPS. It's still unclear if, the somewhat buggy GPS is hardware/software, but the implementation of the hardware has seemed to improve from the limited accounts I've read (I think this is the 3rd, but I don't read the "GPS Poll" thread, so that'd be where to find out for sure).
If you aren't worried about the GPS, there is little to worry about, especially when comparing to other Android devices. You might experience lag, but it depends on many factors and there are fixes available.
Today is my 2nd day im using my new Galaxy S. im very happy with it [ except the wifi seems to be a bit crappy ]
its my first time with android, i used to have HTC Artemis for many years and i enjoyed it. i never *****ed a lot at win mobile but using Android and the fast samsung seems a good relief
so far, very happy with it. i was still a HTC -fan, i wanted the HTC Desire but it was out of stock so i took the Samsung instead. Dont blame me that i pimped it totally Sense / Desire look on the phone hahah

What are the details on the crappy wifi and what firmware are you using? I assume it's on the factory installed firmware? Look into updating, wifi complaints have gone way down to near mute levels since people have updated firmwares. This could be because they have given up on complaining, but I think when people update firmwares they typically say things like "GPS still sucks, X is still present, Y has improved."
If that doesn't fix it, you might have a malfunctioning wifi. I love my speedy 802.11n.
Ik will take al look on the firmware ane update it if possible. Tnx for the headsup.

Same here. I came from a Touch Pro running WM6.1 and can't stop playing with the Galaxy. I already had the freedom to do what I wanted and a really good (if small) screen on the Touch Pro but the integration of everything and the open door that is the marketplace really makes Android shine over current Windows Mobile.
The hardware is excellent and I can't say I've had any issues with wifi nor gps. I'm sitting in the attic of my house at the moment and got six satellites through the roof without issue. Seems to drop wifi after a short amount of time of inactivity but I'm sure that's a power saving thing - certainly connects back up fast whenever it needs to so I'm happy. Just got the usual issue of looking for some case protection now and where to carry it - shirt pocket or on a belt pouch - don't dare to put such a lovely thing in my pocket.
i posted this in wp7 general chat also
ok so i have been a faithful android fan since the first droid, then i got incredible on verizon, loved them both but hated battery life of inc, hated slow updates but i fixed that with cyanogen mod. so i hate the skins the manufacturers add to the phone cause it slows them down and makes them slower to get updates, i love android stock expierience, but verizon doesnt really offer a decent phone with that. the problems i have with android are the lack of polish and overall not the greatest user expierience and inconsistant behavior in the os lol. i changed to a iphone because a lack of good android phones and i like the consistant aproach apple took even tho i dont like apple or the iphone all that much. so ive been eyeing wp7 for a while. i like the ui, but verizon is just now getting its first wp7 phone the htc trophy, not the best phone, but is wp7 worth it? give me some advantages and stuff i would like, to help me decide if i should get it. also i just bought a dx2 and talk about a buggy and inconsistant phone, i cant handle the constant freezing and unsmoothness feeling of the overall os on the phone, so im gonna return it, just trying to decide to get a wp7 or a dif android phone. thanks fellas
I'll be honest with you, all current WP7 devices are the same, the basic specs are the same, some might have a keyboard, larger screen or something else but, the CPU and performance/features are the same between all current models.
If you have done you homework and it seems like you have, give the Trophy a shot, you can't go wrong, you could always return it in the VZW 15 day return window if you don't like it.
It all depends on what you really love about Android, can you replace it on WP7, or can you live with out it ?
trophy, smoother interface and fast, had no probs with freeze etc etc etc,,not as good as android if you like to mess about a lot installing customized roms ,free COUGH games
I am sorta in the same boat, excpet I know I am gonna switch to wp7. I have had the incredible since launch day and it has been an awesome phone. I came from wm6.5 on the tp2. I loved how easily you could customize wm6.5 but it was a dying os, alas I went to android. I also got android knowing that the same sorta hack/customizing scene was taking off. Well, I just don't have time anymore to spend fiddling and customizing my phone multiple times a week. I have been running cyanogen 7 rc something for a while now, its been smooth, but I just don't have the time to keep up.
So long story short, aside from customizing android, I don't find it all that appealing. maybe the only thing i'll miss is "google maps." I have demoed multiple wp7 phones in at&t and sprint stores. And like DavidinCT said, they all felt/performed the same. I even almost jumped ship to sprint, but the keyboard was the deal breaker, hate phones with physical keyboards. anywho, i also (with every ounce of engery) despise apple, so iphone is outa the question.
another thing that sealed the deal for me is I have an xbox360 and zune hd. having both of those integrate with my phone will be awesome.
so all in all. every wp7 phone I have demoed have run buttery smooth, I dig the snappy ui, I am already used to the ui (thanks zune hd), and I look forward to xbox live integration. it is already enough to make me drop android and give it a shot, and its only going to get better (mango, and future updates). plus i look forward to a phone I don't have to strip down and customize to get it to run smoothly, oh, and hopefully better battery life. ok, I am done...hope that helps a little
I'm on the same boat as well and it's torture. I have an HTC Touchpro2 and I'll likely go with WP7 but I'm not ruling out Android just yet. I'll think about it for a week.
I changed from Android (Dell Streak) to my current Trophy, and I don't regret it.
I dropped my Streak, tried to replaced the damaged screen, and broke the phone more, so had to get something new. Thought I would give WP7 a try (As no one I know had used it at all, and I like to be different) and to be honest I think it was a good decision.
As mentioned, its not as 'customizable' as Android by any means, but I love the way it works and looks. Its a new OS, and to be fair its jumping forwards pretty quickly!
No lagging problems, good battery life (couple of days including playing about with it), no quibbles with updates, would be nice if I could stick in a memory card, but realistically who puts more than 8GB of stuff on their phone? I haven't met anyone who needs more than that yet!
Personally I reckon it'll easily be on par with the others once the Mango update appears at the end of this year.

WP7 the worse mobile OS ever!!
My experience with WP7 is the worst ever! You can't do anything smart with this phone!
Ohh great, you can play music, games and chat on facebook. That's it!
No flash web pages, no bluetooth file transfers, no GPS software, stupid email attachment system, NO file management: you can't put your files where ever you want because of the new sandboxing system, no customizations for ringtones and alarms, you can download almost nothing with internet explorer,no multitasking yet,no USB mass storage for real, no way to install your own apps.
Now for a very few of these there is a fix with chevron's patch but still it's not a great thing to buy a phone, and be so dmn limited . My advice get an Android or if you have enough cash$$ an iPhone.
Cheers

So let me get this straight... you bought a new smartphone with a new OS off the shelf without test driving it or even getting some information on how it functions ? Do you even remember what Android or iOS were like when launched ?
WP7 is not for everyone and clearly you are one of them... go back to Android or iPhone, you'll be happier.
On a side note, just wanna drop a link to this post, concerning WP7.5 list of features announced so far:

Unfortunately you seem to be one of the usuals who expects everything from day one. How long have Android and iOS been around? Now how long has WP7 been out?
It takes time to do all of this stuff, and while we all complain when updates are dropped back etc, its a waiting game.
As previously stated, you're clearly not a WP7 person, so go follow all the other sheep and buy an iPhone so that you can start slating everything else. (Hey, at least you tried something else, most iPhone'rs have never used another OS yet spend all day *****ing about how crap the rest are!)

Give WP7 a test drive before you commit (a shop, friend or a demo phone somewhere), make sure it has at least the mininal apps and functions you can't live without and if not, that you are at least patient enough to wait on Mango.
I do alot of research before I commit to a new smartphone and WP7 was no different... and loving it.
Hm i thing that the modern user is very spoiled.
You pick a gadget and expect from it to be Number One .... iOS and Android were soooo limitated when they were out. How many years were needed for them to become mature .... Let's say you buy WP7 as a system for your phone ... at the moment, it's actually working, and quite well too. Limited ? Yes ! A young system ? Yes .... several months later You have one major update and in several months ahead a nearly new Release.
If You are no enthusiast, this system is not for You. For something to move forward it needs time and users. Demand will move the things forward much faster. If the shiny, little messy, look of Android with all it's unapproved and tested applications is the best for You, than You have it, just use it. The decision is very personal, only You can choose. If WP7 seams pretty limited to You, stay away from it for now. Return after one Year to see a grown, well build and competitive product. If you look closer You will see how fast the operating system gains speed ...
I played around with it for over an hour in store. itll be here tomorrow.
I want to like it, but every time I play with it in store, I'm underwhelmed. Additionally, I can't even access the Marketplace from the Verizon store model which is pretty disappointing. I went to two Verizon stores today and neither allowed me to access the Marketplace to look around.

I don't agree with this at all. Just because a phone OS is new to the market doesn't mean it should be lacking features that have been in other phones for years before. It happened with iphone, it happened with Android, and its happening with WP7. What if a new OS doesn't have a redial feature? Would that be okay since the first mobile phone didn't have it?
People are quick to excuse manufacturers for not including basic things like copy pasting or video recording, when they could have easily implemented them from the start without having to break their development budget.
