Screen Taps Hack? Pref. A .Cab Maybe?!?!? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hello and good day everyone....
I was wondering and hoping there is an option to change the sound of the screen tap option on the Sprint Touch or any PPC for that matter.
Maybe like a bursting bubble noise or gun shot even? Does anyone have a way to change the OEM click sound, or better yet have a .Cab file (noob here) that would make it so I can change the "click"?
Thank you for reading, and I look forward to see what any of you come up with.
P.S. I would like to thank the members of this site for making me "love" my phone or any smartphone again for that matter. What has been developed thus far has made my use of the phone a BREEZE! Thank you!!!!

To the top....

I also want to know!
I was trying to find if there is a .wav or that makes the default tap sound, but there is no file like that in /windows. If anyone find a way to change, plz post how to do it. Thanks in advance.

hwandsw.wav in \windows\ - also possible to change others there.

But how can we replace that file with our own customized one ? It prompts "access denied, file may already be in use"

...Hmmm
I actually used Resco and was able to replace that file with one of my own....., however I'm still getting the default screen tap sound.

Use WA2 or 3

Yeah, even i used Resco Explorer to replace the file, it gives warning initially, but then does the job. About replacin' the "screen tap sound" you gotta replace one more file in Windows:\ the filename is 'MenuPop'
Replace this file as well, with your own customized one, it'll get goin'
Adieu..

Nope... will not work. That's not the right files...

The hwandsw.wav and menupop.wav are the click and clucks you hear when tapping.
You might even try unchecking the screen taps under settings - sounds and notifications to disable the sounds.

Have someone found a solution on how to change the screen tap sound on Touch?
I have changed the files mentioned above, but same sound when tapping screen.
I have a HTC Touch, slow device, i think a shorter sound with lower bitrate would make the tapping more responsive.

Turn off tap and button sounds on the device.
Soft reset the device.
Go and replace both files with the new ones.
Soft reset again.
Enable the tap and button sounds again. See if new ones are playing.
If not try soft reset once more and recheck.

unfortunately it doesn't work, have tried several times now, same sound

I confirm, if you try to play hwandsw.wav, you'll see that this one is not the screen tap. tried to play another files on windows dir, but havent found the tap sound.. could the file location and name be found on some key like screentap on registry?

Cook a new rom

hey just do these with the resco registry editor
get in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\control panel\sounds\
in that u will have registry for aqll the sounds and the path..........
just change the path to your wish......
but caution just changing hex values wrongly may damage your phone seriously!!

I looked at this some time ago, even if you replace the files in the Windows directory it doesn't change the sounds as it will use what is cooked into the ROM - to get around this you'd need to do as xd1936 suggested and cook a new ROM with the WAV files you want.
Alternatively:
I came across this thread on PPC Geeks some time ago and gave it a go: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=49455
It involves some fiddling around with registry settings and from memory I did get it to change screen tap sounds but it changed other sounds too (I might have been in hasty in typing out the entries)
Hope that helps you.
(Full credit to signal34on PPC Geeks for this)

Doesn't the software "Toonality" change this? I mean you can change it though that program. Search for it.

changing the systems default sound set

Is there any way (via the registry or whatever) that the system sounds, such as the stylus tap sound and start menu sounds etc can be changed on windows mobile 2003? i know there is a program called SoundZ cool but i dont see the point in paying for an app if its possible to do it yourself
They are all sounds in the windows directory.
Some you can choose in Settings/sounds & notifications
Other you can overwrite the files with another with the same name.
Probably you could change it somewhere in the registry, but don't know exactly where.
funnily enough, i havent tried replacing them as i thought they may be in rom :? ill have a go now cheers m8
nah, just as i thought - the files are stored in ROM rather than RAM so you cant just replace them. It looks like either a registry change or cooking a new rom coz the default sounds on pocket pc are rubbish! if anyone has any information on whereabouts in the registry i could change these sounds please say so! ive looked through it and cant find anything really
You are correct, the .wav files for all the events are stored in ROM, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't change them.
You can replace them for any sounds you like as long as you named them the same.
Here you have the ones I use. Just unzip and copy to your /windows/ folder on the Pocket PC and make sure you answer YES to the overwrite requestor. You are not actually overwriting anything, in fact, if you ever want to go back to your old sounds, just delete them from the /windows/ folder and SOFT-RESET.
**NOTE** I just couldn't attach the .ZIP file with the sounds, if you like to have them please email me at rayan(at)sonyericssonfans.com
Regards,
Sergio
That's correct, you can change virtually every sound provided you know what the names are of the .wav in \Windows.
I myself substituted all the default ones for those in WinXP and it sounds a lot better. I never liked the old xda sounds and so ever since having the first XDA I changed them.
I just wish I could figure out a way of letting the phone play .mid files as message alert tones...I know you can convert them but they don't sound the same.
Cheers
Anthony
why does my fone say "unable to access the file" when i click replace?? is there a way to get around this??
Thanks!!
I actually changed the "select" and the "menu command" wav files to those of my liking. Thru some explorer app. such as "Total Command" I copied those two files available under Windows to some other folder and changed the attributes of the "Rom", "ReadOnly" & "System" to be "Archive".
Returned them back to Windows with the same attrib.
Overwritten them with ones of my choice such as "Spece MenuPop.wav"...
Mind you that you need to rename them exactly the original way and case sensetive.
Some how limitations are limited!! 8)

the "click" sound......

does anyone know how to change the sound of the click when you press something???
my earphones cannot reproduce the high pitch sound of the original and is producing a very harsh static.....
any reply is greatly appreciated.
I dunno about how to change which wav file is being played (although it must be in the sound events settings page), but why don't you just replace the corresponding wav file itself?
well it is not included in the list. maybe because it is not an event to begin with. the sound i am reffering to is when for example, clicking the start button
I may have got the wrong end of the stick here, but have you looked in Settings, Phone and turned Keypad to off ?

You can change it by replacing it to any file on ur liking or even record an empty wav and replace it with.
Oh something else you have to paste the new files from the computer
Here's the wm2005 wav sounds files "copy it then paste" it to \Windows
Good luck
so i need to replace the default sound file with a sound file of my liking renamed to default.wav?
trf415,
the filename that you're after is MenuPop.wav. Replace that in the/Windows directory and that's it ;-)
@kta: That's what I said in the first place... dunno why he didn't get it
Yeah you're right MenuPop.wav changes the sound for the opening of the start menu and opening other menu's too, but what is the filename for the sound when you select a program from, let say, the start menu. The click sound.
Thanx a bunch
sorry bout that didint quite understand your post hehe
tnx to all of you
trf415, all you need to do is to go the /Windows folder on your PPC and play all the WAV files until you find the insulting one. There's not so many WAV files there, so shouldn't take you more than 5 mins!
I think Default.wav is what you're after ...

You can unmark the checkbox called "Events" in [email protected]
It takes away all the clicks, except for example when you are in Power settings and click the shortcut links (backlight, beam) on the bottom.
Do they have max file size? as I'm trying to change MenuPop.wav & hwandsw.wav but only some of them can be played in my XDA 2 mini.

Need help removing start-up sound

Hello all,
I have searched & searched. I've read the Wiki and found the info there, more than once. I'm just not "techie" and need more details. I absolutely hate the loud startup sound on the AT&T 8525 that came on my new phone.
I downloaded the Resco trial and I've spent hours trying to find the correct file to "fix" but I just haven't been able to find it. I also like the animation, just not the sound. It looks like just adjust the WAV file, when I finally find it on my phone?
Sorry, but any additional help (Step by Step if possible) you can give me would be greatly appreciated. This sound is driving me & my husband nuts.
After much searching and many hours, the Voice Command works great! Very pleased with that, this forum is awesome.
MsGadget
I assume you are referring to the following?:
Disable/change the startup animation or sound
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\StartupAnimationEnabled - change from 1 to 0 to turn everything off and permanently fix the volume issue.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\StartupAnimationVolumn - change from 16 to 200 (higher number = lower volume) to lower the volume to a whisper but keep the animation.
You can also customize the animated boot up by deleting or changing 2 keys. (Doing this does not fix the volume issue)
Delete the WAVFile Key to remove the sound only.
Delete the GIFFile Key to remove the animation only.
Put your own .GIF file or .WAV file on the phone and rewrite the 2 keys (WAVFile GIFFile) to the new file location. i.e. \My Documents\Files\CustomAnimation.gif
It will help us to know where you are getting stuck.
Can you find thw key HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\StartupAnimation using Resco?
Mike
That's what I found, but I can't find the file to change in Resco. I tried to do a search in Resco for the file, but no luck. What does it mean by doesn't fix volume issues?
Sorry, but I've been reading & searching for 3 days now. I'm not the least bit techie, but I love my gadgets!
Thank you!

Ok. One step at a time perhaps.
First you are not using Resco to look for a file but an entry(s) in the Registry. So the first thing to do is to go into Resco and look through the menus for something like "Edit the Registry". I use PHM registry Editor so I'm not sure what menu it's in but it will be in the Resco menus somewhere.
Mike
Download total commander, its free and I know for sure it works.
HKLM is the area of the registry, SOFTWARE is the folder, HTC the next folder and then look for StartupAnimationEnabled
Change the value from 1 to 0, then put the device into sleep for 15 seconds (hit the power button, but dont turn it off) and then do a soft reset.
When it reboots, it will be the way you want it.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\StartupAnimationEnabled - change from 1 to 0 to turn everything off and permanently fix the volume issue
Thank you both very much. I'll work on it again when I get home. Wish me luck. Thank goodness for Sprite backup.
Mona
mikechannon & teknics,
I'm so happy, I got it to work. Your step-by-step instructions were very clear. I greatly appreciate both of you taking the time to share the basics of how & where to start.
Most others in this type of forum probably know where to begin, but I really needed the very basics. The knowledge you provided is very valuable!
Thanks again,
MsGadget
Pleased you got it to work - future registry changes will be a piece of cake
Mike
Agreed!
Not a problem, that's why we are all here right?

Disable WM6 Startup Sound

I auto-soft reset my Touch at 2 am.
When the title screen for WM comes up that music wakes me up...
How do I disable the WM6 Startup Sound?
Thanks!
I found the culprit = PhoneOn.wav.
I tried deleting the Key for the .wav in HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\StartupAnimation
but did not work.
I also tried to delete PhoneOn.wav with Total Commander but its protected from deletion in some way....aaaaargh!

Are the registry edits you making actually getting written? Are you powering off the device after making the edits or just soft resetting?
Verify that the changes are made after booting by reviewing the entries again.

Slim,
I rebooted and the entry is getting written. I then soft reset and that darn music is still playing -- are you on a Touch (Vogue)??
thanks
This worked for me
This is what I just did, seems to work fine.
1) Use Total Commander to search for the registry key which contains sound_on.
or browse to
\HKCU\ControlPanel\PhoneExtendFunction\CDMA\FlightModeOnOff\Sound_on
2) Change the content of that key from "SoundOn.wav" to "silence.wav"
3) Done.
I now get a nice and quiet soft reset. I'm using the HTC Touch / Vogue.
Leon.
Sorry dude, I am using a Tilt. I pulled the reg keys from the ROM kitchen I use to build my ROM; however, I HATE the stupid startup animation and sound, so I never cook it in to my builds.
The calls for your startup animation must be somewhere else.
Try ibloo's solution...I will look around a bit and see if I can find out why those reg edits I suggested don't work for you.

FOR HTC PURE,
Here is how to replace the annoying AT&T startup noise with any sound file of your own choice:
Edit the registry at following location:
[HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCAnimation]
Change StartupWav to any other wav files.
Remember..
When you are making changes to the registry...
-exit the registry editor
-give it a good 10 seconds or so, then hit the power button (to blank the screen). This allows the registry settings to bake/get applied.
-Then, do a soft reset.
Else.. if you do it too quick, the changes may not apply/stick.

Hi Chemist
Found this one but what I really want is NO sound at all. How do I achieve that? Can I just remove the reference to the existing .WAV file or do I have to replace it with a .WAV that is empty, ie, no sound? If that is the case do you know where I can get hold of one or how I could make one?
Thanks in advance.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCAnimation]

I prefer not to use cabs though as i like to know exactly what i am doing when tweaking and would prefer not to decompile the cab to see exactly wtf is going on!
I take it that cab replaces the wav file all together?
If you didnt want to do this you can simply go to:
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCAnimation\StartupWav
and edit the name of the wav file in that key ( i added a character to its file name so it would be easy to change back if needed.)

Yeah, tell me about it! What's the point of putting a startup sound if it stutters? It makes the whole device look cheap right from its first powerup.
All my cab does is replace the wav file with a tiny silent one, therefore saving precious ROM space. It works fine for me, and I've not had any complaints so far.
Where is startup tone located?
Hi
Could someone tell me which folder the startup tone is located? I wanted to replace it with my own wav.
Thanks
