changing the systems default sound set - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Is there any way (via the registry or whatever) that the system sounds, such as the stylus tap sound and start menu sounds etc can be changed on windows mobile 2003? i know there is a program called SoundZ cool but i dont see the point in paying for an app if its possible to do it yourself

They are all sounds in the windows directory.
Some you can choose in Settings/sounds & notifications
Other you can overwrite the files with another with the same name.
Probably you could change it somewhere in the registry, but don't know exactly where.

funnily enough, i havent tried replacing them as i thought they may be in rom :? ill have a go now cheers m8

nah, just as i thought - the files are stored in ROM rather than RAM so you cant just replace them. It looks like either a registry change or cooking a new rom coz the default sounds on pocket pc are rubbish! if anyone has any information on whereabouts in the registry i could change these sounds please say so! ive looked through it and cant find anything really

You are correct, the .wav files for all the events are stored in ROM, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't change them.
You can replace them for any sounds you like as long as you named them the same.
Here you have the ones I use. Just unzip and copy to your /windows/ folder on the Pocket PC and make sure you answer YES to the overwrite requestor. You are not actually overwriting anything, in fact, if you ever want to go back to your old sounds, just delete them from the /windows/ folder and SOFT-RESET.
**NOTE** I just couldn't attach the .ZIP file with the sounds, if you like to have them please email me at rayan(at)sonyericssonfans.com
Regards,
Sergio

That's correct, you can change virtually every sound provided you know what the names are of the .wav in \Windows.
I myself substituted all the default ones for those in WinXP and it sounds a lot better. I never liked the old xda sounds and so ever since having the first XDA I changed them.
I just wish I could figure out a way of letting the phone play .mid files as message alert tones...I know you can convert them but they don't sound the same.
Cheers
Anthony

why does my fone say "unable to access the file" when i click replace?? is there a way to get around this??
Thanks!!

I actually changed the "select" and the "menu command" wav files to those of my liking. Thru some explorer app. such as "Total Command" I copied those two files available under Windows to some other folder and changed the attributes of the "Rom", "ReadOnly" & "System" to be "Archive".
Returned them back to Windows with the same attrib.
Overwritten them with ones of my choice such as "Spece MenuPop.wav"...
Mind you that you need to rename them exactly the original way and case sensetive.
Some how limitations are limited!! 8)

Message sounds?

My first post in this incredible forum, I have all ready found so much help here and are most thankful, please keep it up.
Is it possible to make your own message sounds and use them when recieving text messages etc.
If possible at all what format should the file be in (mp3 wav)?
Tried with an mp3 placed in the windows folder it seems it cant find it.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'm not an expert so hopefully one will reply, but I think they have to be .wav and I think they have to go in the \windows\rings folder.
cheers

Actually, you are 1/2 right, they need to be wavs, but they go directly into windows, not in the rings folder.
Steve
Yep steve is correct the sound file will need to be a .wav and place into the windows folder, ring tones can be mid,wav and so on and they are placed into the rings folder within windows.
Sound file converter???
Morning all,
My first posting also and yes this has to be the mecca for knwledge of all Wizard related things. My question:

You might try Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
It's a free download. I use Sound Editor in Roxio's Media Creator 8 -- one of the MANY useful tools in that program.

YW -- (but I'm a GAL -- not a guy)!! LOL!! But, that's ok -- none of my friends can believe how "techy" I am, either. But, I'm the first one they come running to with a problem. Go Figger!!
Cheers all,
You keep refering to ring sounds, I am looking for Sounds for alarms and recieved messages, and alerts in general.
But I will try it now with wav files in stead of mp3.
Manindesert,
I'm using Sound Forge 7, but then again I really need it for all my music stuff, so give Audacity a shot.
Update Works fine with alarm and message sounds, thank you all.
Is there any way, hack or otherwise, that will allow you to point your rings/sounds to your SD card? Thought it would be nice to free some space and stop having to move files on and off the card. I change my ring tone with my mood
Javahater,
I've been loking for a hack/program/setting that will do that, but no luck so far.
Unfortunately, all SMS & ring tones must be located in main memory!
But there's a possibility to create a program that will browse a folder of ring tones on SD card & once u select a tone, it will be copied to main memory (and of course erase the old default tone from main memory) & will set this new file as the default ring tone for the phone.
Javahater and Ezzkht,
Maybe you should look here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks scroll down to this "ANY FOLDER RING TONES"
You will need a Registry Editor like Total Commander 2 or PHM Regedit
Hope this helps
Javahater,
Have been trying above solution for about an hour, seems that this solution doesn't work under WM5, or at least it doesn't make any difference if you change the folder or not (it only points to windows not windows\rings)
Will have to keep looking.

AGREED !! I've got WM2003SE tried the steps mentioned http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks no use.......it still picks up the default folder from \windows\rings, where as I am pointing it towards \Storage Card\Sound\ not working
ok just double checked.....in sounds and notifications options it goes to \windows\rings folder.....but I have o2 plus installed as well...and in o2 plus sounds and notifications options it points me to \Storage Card\Sound any ideas ?
Ezzkht,
Happy t worked for you, can't say the same for me.
Well it is getting more and more weird, when I look in my registry it only points to \windows\ not even \windows\rings\, despite this it still manages to pick up ringtones/sounds in the rings directory, and all sound files placed in the root of the SD Card(go figure).
I'm out of ideas right now, but am still looking for a solution and will be back if I find one.
I just used Resco Explorer with the registry editor add-in.
It worked with me without a soft-reset!
What device do you have, Mike?
Maybe some nice sounds
Hello everyone!
It's a little bit off topic, a little bit not
My advice: SD card is not really a good place for sounds, at least in my case. Why? Sometimes it happened that when I got a phone call, instead of my nice ringtone I've heard the standard one. I think it has sth to do with powering up SD card while changing from standby mode. It's just my impression.
Secondly: I'm looking for some nice SMS ringtones, not the funky ones... I'm getting a lot of messages and it's really boring if you hear "Heeeeellooooo! Your message is coooooomingggg!" every now and then. I will appreciate if you could share your ringtone with me

crossbow sound theme? neone?

so i see that there is a blue angel rom with "true" crossbow sound theme.. im wondering if neone has these files id like to use them on the wizard. dont care so much bout the icons but want the sounds!
Can't remember which thread this was posted in, but here it is again.
thats only the ringtone......im looking for the system sounds and such
The ringtone file is the only thing I've seen posted in the forums.
After the mess with Palm over posting the PhotoDialer .cab and with Apple over the iPhone mock-up screen, if there ever WAS a posted file with the other system sounds it's probably had to be removed now too. But, if it WAS ever posted, I never did see it -- and I scour these forums every day.
This is the soundpack I have - I have it and have no idea where/when I got it. It has the same name as the zip posted here and has the same file plus a whole lot more. I think it's standard with the AKU 3.2.
-Mc
thank you thank you
Anyone have any ideas on using the new sounds. I can't replace the files in \Windows, and cannot alter there attributes. I'm assuming you must build a ROM to use them.
I have a sounds folder in "My Documents" on my PPC and there is already a sounds folder in Application Data. Put them there and the system will recognize them. No need to replace the other ones...
-Mc
None of those work. The system still uses the files in \windows.
Try using Total commander to overwrite the files.
i used windows exploere and overwrote off the pc
You cannot just change the sounds i'm afraid, that's not worked since back in WM2002, you have to change the registry entries related to the sounds...
I reccomend a nice little commercial app (no links) called "Soundz Cool". It's a Windows based application that runs on your PC, which connects to any WM powered PDA, and pulls the sound settings from the registry. you can then edit them, and copy them back to your PDA with your own custom sound effects. Soundz Cool will even remove unused files it's copied across before to kepp your PDA clean.
Hope this helps you all, coz it took me ages to find such an application...

Screen Taps Hack? Pref. A .Cab Maybe?!?!?

Hello and good day everyone....
I was wondering and hoping there is an option to change the sound of the screen tap option on the Sprint Touch or any PPC for that matter.
Maybe like a bursting bubble noise or gun shot even? Does anyone have a way to change the OEM click sound, or better yet have a .Cab file (noob here) that would make it so I can change the "click"?
Thank you for reading, and I look forward to see what any of you come up with.
P.S. I would like to thank the members of this site for making me "love" my phone or any smartphone again for that matter. What has been developed thus far has made my use of the phone a BREEZE! Thank you!!!!
To the top....
I also want to know!
I was trying to find if there is a .wav or that makes the default tap sound, but there is no file like that in /windows. If anyone find a way to change, plz post how to do it. Thanks in advance.
hwandsw.wav in \windows\ - also possible to change others there.

But how can we replace that file with our own customized one ? It prompts "access denied, file may already be in use"

I actually used Resco and was able to replace that file with one of my own....., however I'm still getting the default screen tap sound.
Use WA2 or 3

Yeah, even i used Resco Explorer to replace the file, it gives warning initially, but then does the job. About replacin' the "screen tap sound" you gotta replace one more file in Windows:\ the filename is 'MenuPop'
Replace this file as well, with your own customized one, it'll get goin'

Nope... will not work. That's not the right files...
The hwandsw.wav and menupop.wav are the click and clucks you hear when tapping.
You might even try unchecking the screen taps under settings - sounds and notifications to disable the sounds.

Have someone found a solution on how to change the screen tap sound on Touch?
I have changed the files mentioned above, but same sound when tapping screen.
I have a HTC Touch, slow device, i think a shorter sound with lower bitrate would make the tapping more responsive.
Turn off tap and button sounds on the device.
Soft reset the device.
Go and replace both files with the new ones.
Soft reset again.
Enable the tap and button sounds again. See if new ones are playing.
If not try soft reset once more and recheck.
unfortunately it doesn't work, have tried several times now, same sound
I confirm, if you try to play hwandsw.wav, you'll see that this one is not the screen tap. tried to play another files on windows dir, but havent found the tap sound.. could the file location and name be found on some key like screentap on registry?
Cook a new rom
hey just do these with the resco registry editor
get in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\control panel\sounds\
in that u will have registry for aqll the sounds and the path..........
just change the path to your wish......
but caution just changing hex values wrongly may damage your phone seriously!!
I looked at this some time ago, even if you replace the files in the Windows directory it doesn't change the sounds as it will use what is cooked into the ROM - to get around this you'd need to do as xd1936 suggested and cook a new ROM with the WAV files you want.
Alternatively:
I came across this thread on PPC Geeks some time ago and gave it a go: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=49455
It involves some fiddling around with registry settings and from memory I did get it to change screen tap sounds but it changed other sounds too (I might have been in hasty in typing out the entries)
Hope that helps you.
(Full credit to signal34on PPC Geeks for this)
Doesn't the software "Toonality" change this? I mean you can change it though that program. Search for it.

Customizable Soundboard App

I've searched and searched and searched. But yet to find anything working well.
I'm trying to find a customizable soundboard app. There's so many sounds ide use (Dave Chappelles Rick James, Mr T, Anchorman... I could seriously go on forever)
If there's nothing out there you guys and gals could suggest for me, is there any devs out there that could point me in the right direction on how to write this app.
Cheers peeps
use this program http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-wdaft-for-wqvga-vga-qvga-and-square-mobile.html as a base. in the explorer, you can switch the sounds and graphics to what you like. p.s. this program friggin rocks!
Dude, your gonna get busted posting warez here.
Dude, your cant post warez here. read the rules
how is it a ware? it says its beta and its listed as freeware on that site.
Sorry dude. Didn't actually read it. saw the site 'ppcwarez' and though it was
my bad
Nice lil app. but how would one change the sound s and such?
its all good. i installed to my sd. i go to my device/sd card/program files/godaft. in the two folders are the images and sounds. you can make your own images or go to iconspedia.com and grab some free icons and replace them with the originals. then you can grab the sound files you want to use and replace them with the ones in there. i dont know what format it is either .wav or .mp3, but you can grab an mp3 converter freeware app from somewhere to change it. the only thing you gotta do is make sure you rename the file you put in with the one you take out.
Sweet,
Ive managed to change the header and sounds to dave chappelle's rick james.
There's only one problem. The buttons still read 'harder, better, faster, stronger'
I cant find anything related to these in the skin folder.
Any ideas?
ok i just checked and there is no button associated with the words. my advice is to just reverse-engineer the app until you find the text written into it. try using a .cab decompiler/extractor or visual studio. if you dont know how to do this then maybe look around on here for people who deconstruct files. i would look and try to write you a new board but i dont have the time and resources right now. you might also wat to try to find another sound board like the fart app. not all of them have all images cooked into it.
Dude,... this is THE BEST app ever invented. Work has never been that easy,... I put "shut up", "go away", "bring me coffee" and "cu tomorrow" in the app and I never ever have to open my mouth again

I didn't actually edit the program itself. I just created the 4 sound files (*.wav) I wanted and named them L1.wav, L2.wav, L3.wav and L4.wav
Then I replaced the original sound files in the Godaft/Sounds folder with my own ones and now the first 4 buttons play my sounds. The buttons are still called "work it", "make it", etc., but they play my sounds. So if I would add more sounds, it might become hard to remember, which sound is on which button,... but the 4 I have are all I need and easy to remember

I used 7-zip to extract the cab file and got loads of files. Extensions are .001 all the way to .052 (I'm guessing these are the resouces) and an XML file (used to install)
I've looked through the XML in notepad and cant find anything there.
So its in the resource files somewhere. How do i open these files?
Ive checked out Visual Studio, but not sure which version I'm after as don't know which language this apps written in.

it sometimes sucks that you have to use multiple extractors to dig out one simple image. i still got an eye out for another soundboard for you that is much simpler to edit to your liking. there was also a guitar app i seen that was crazy simple to switch...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=482726. there is only 6 sound options and you have to skin the buttons the same as guitar strings.

[Q] HD Message

My Touch HD had a message "Hi Boss You Have A New Message" when I got a message. Would anyone know where I can find this file.
Any Help would be appreciated.
The best option is to select all MP3, WAV and WMA files in Windows folder and copy them to another folder and start looking for your sound. You can also look at your SD card.
Good luck!

Thank you so much. I found it and copied it to 3 Folders on my HD2. My voices, My sound and also Windows/Rings. Still when I go to set the ring for my new messages, it doesn't show as an option. Am I missing something.
I don't know where HD2 stores it's sounds but You have to put your sound into specific folder I guess. In HD I don't need to do anything, all my sounds I have on my SD card and they're working without problems
Did You try to search into main Windows folder? On my phone I've found there many system sounds and rings as well.

It's very strange. I found all the sound folders as noted above, and copied the file to them. I checked the dropdown list for new messages and all of the options are in the windows/rings folder. So I copied the "Excuse me boss" file to the same folder, reset, but still no luck. Anyway, it was a good thought. It is such a neat file but I guess it wont work on the HD2.
But thanks again, you were such a great help.
