I have a X01HT and live in Tokyo
Goggle map's "MyLocation" doesnt seem to work (Current Location temporarly unavailable)
However if I check in Help/About, I can see coordinates fo myl
Is there soemthing I havent unabl properly (I did unlock app install)
Or it's just that the service doesnt work in Japan ?
Sorry, this may seem like an obvious question. You have a gps device right? I also have a TyTN, external bluetooth solar GPS device and the my location works fine for me here in Tokyo with google maps.
If you need a GPS device PM me. I just purchased a kaiser and am unloading my Xo1ht and GPS device.
BTW if you do have a device it worked for me after I added a port for it, then associating that port with the google application.

I was talking about the localization using the transmission towers (Doesnt use GPS)

look at the PC google maps for japan and you'll see if it's romanji or kanji.
But you cant use tower location positioning. It's not an option in the phone and I do believe you'd need it as a service from Softbank.

I find it funny that the dash is able to get the gps working on google maps and when it comes to the wing (MUMZZZ)the word.!

this is wrong in sooooooooo many ways. first, neither the dash (HTC excalibur) nor the wing (HTC Herald/Atlas) have built-in GPS.
Google maps uses data, does it not? So theoretically, anywhere you have a data connection, you can use google maps.
If by gps you mean an external gps, it's only a matter of tethering your gps to your phone, which is relatively self-explanatory

so how is the dash able to track location on google maps also searches for gps and is successful . unless a buddy of mine has a special dash ..
i believe google just implemented a new service that uses cellphone tower triangulation to determine an approximate location. does it show your friends location as a dot or a dot over a larger, lighter colored dot?

GPS on the wing is NOT possible, UNLESS using a gps device.
THOUGH, google maps (the newest version) has a way of attempting to find your location without GPS. It uses cell phone towers to triangulate your posistion. This is not as accurate as GPS though, it can be anywhere dead on your posistion, or it could be 1500 meters off. it just depends on the amount of cell coverage in the area.

ofcourse you can "implement a gps program" just connect teh wing to a gps-mouse und use one of these:

I got a question for you may be stupid but hey gotta start somewhere... I hae a Garmin and wanted to know how to "tether" my garmin to my wing for Gmaps? Can you help me out?
I'm running IGuidance 4.0 with an Itrek M5+ gps bluetooth reciever and today I decided to try out Google Maps. This is being used on a Verizon XV-6800 with Fransons GPS Gate.
When I first fire up Google Maps it says "Your handset does not appear be compatible with my location (beta)." and it places me in CA when I live in VA.
If I run it through the Itrek under GPS then it works fine - question is do I need to enable the GPS built into the phone for it to work without the Itrek or is it better to run through the Itrek itself in terms of signal for Google maps?

you need to press, under options, use GPS. then when it has a fix, you can press my location to find where you are if you moved from your fix on maps. make sure you GPS settings are set to 'automatic by windows'
I think the signal is more likely to be better if you run it through your external gps. The mogul is a jack-of-all-trades device. It does a little of everything. However, this means that some functions are not optimized - and my experience is gps is one of them. Having said that, I do think it should work fine if you follow the directions given on the previous post.
If you have Sprint and are running PRI 2.03 then the mogul is an excellent GPS device, not unoptimized as the previous poster said.
Yeah, I'm using my XV6800 GPS regularly to get me to specific long. and lat. coordinates and its working flawlessly (w/in 1-3 meters usually depending on atmospheric and geographic problems). I have friends using their Garmin type handhelds and in car devices that initially thought using a phone for Geocaching (www.geocaching.com) was nuts but they're believers now...
Google maps defaults to their home base of San Francisco.
I have the Mogul from Sprint. Sometimes the gps works with Google maps. Sometimes it doesn't.
I have been reading that you have to prime it or warm it up with another program. Don't understand why. I am still researching this.
The My Location feature works great once you get the gps to turn on. I have found it to be very accurate. So much so that I have done some Geocaching with it. I use a Garmin Etrex Vista for Geocaching, but when I am at work and want to check out some caches, I feel confident that the gps on the Mogul is an adequate locator.
Google maps is of course an excellent service. And is just as excellent on the phone. The search feature in Google maps is my number one application. I just need to find a free application to give me turn by turn. =P
There is no need to prime google. It does it on it's own. I've heard of it being an issue with some navigation programs.
"My location" works by triangulating your position via the cell towers. This works for other devices that don't have an internal GPS chip. I've seen this on different Blackberry devices.
If you've enabled GPS, then 'my location' simply centers your view to your GPS location.

no i am not talking about gps, but about cell tracking, positioning using gsm BTS stations... (it´s not very accurate but its good enough for google maps and latitude f.e.)
it should work on all gsm phones but our device has some problem with it
I noticed that there's no way to get free GPS software to work with my HD, so which ones you guys recommend? I heard the google maps charges way too much based on how many times it is used and data.
Can these softwares once bought provide different maps? I travel different places around the world.

The best GPS navigation software in my opinion is TomTom 7. However, it does not have maps in every country. Therefore, I have about 4 different GPS in my HD. For asian countries, the best one is MapKing.
Do need to have internet connection for GPS to work?
Does the GPS needs some data service to work? or does it work like a regular GPS?
Or is it based on the software used?

No, you do not need internet connection for software such as TomTom, iGO, Mapking and Garmin. Only if you use such additional services (strictly optional) that such connections are needed. Most people use only the map data which resides on the device itself, unlike Google Map, which need to download the map data as you use it.

I noticed Garmin might work for me in the US (don't know in Europe) but the packaging details that it comes with a cd and a memory card. So how am I supposed to use that if I got my 16gig memory on????

3D buildings in GPS navigation is so useless, your looking outside the windscreen so everything is 3D anyways.
I've read that the HD2 has the new snapdragon chip which has built-in GPS. i have the t-mobile usa version. i'm having problems figuring out how to get my gps software to recognize the gps radio. maybe i'm just missing a setting (i hope). is the gps radio even available in the t-mo usa rom or do i need another rom? if i do need another rom, any suggestions?....or pointers in the right direction.

I think the manual settings are com4, 4800 baud for the gps.
I tried manually setting it in google maps and it worked on Friday.
isn't google maps a web based gps? i trying to get the gps to work without a data (or internet connection). also, i have gone through every setting in settings and still cannot find where to set the com or baud nor do i see even any mention of gps.

google maps does require data connection. I was just mentioning it since I can change the gps settings there. I vaguely remember that those settings work, so you can try it in your gps program if it doesn't detect automatically.
I used Telenav on my TMOUS HD2 5 minutes after I got my phone and it worked fine without changing any of the settings. I have a dataplan on my phone though.
Is the AGPS service on your phone on? Try turning it off.
Its in settings>Location>AGPS Service.
i have agps off. i am under the impression that agps uses data (i have no data plan) and of course, do not want to use data. according to wikipedia: "A typical A-GPS-enabled receiver will use a data connection (Internet or other) to contact the assistance server for A-GPS information". i'm going to call t-mo usa on this.
i can get the software to find my location (using agps) but this phone has a stand-a-lone gps radio and it should work without any assistance from anything other than the satellites. my tytnII did. my feeling is that it's my phone, it's my software why should i pay someone to use it? especially when it was designed to work independently, until the phone companies figured out a way to charge for it. in addition, when i'm trekking and there is no tower, the very reason gps was invented is rendered useless.
anyone have any experience with setting up their hd2 with gps (not agps), using any of the standard softwares? i.e. tom tom, iguidance, etc. i pretty sure this is possible, but hard to find information on.

fyi - i have found out that (through several unhelpful contacts with the manufacturer as well as posts here and elsewhere) iguidance gps does not work with the hd2 (usa)....and the company provides no assistance in this matter.

There are plenty of other GPS apps that should work with the HD2 that don't require a monthly payment. I'm only using Telenav through the 60 day free trial, and will cancel it afterwards.
Tom Tom, iGo 8, and Navigon all reportedly work for the HD2. You will have to pay for the software and maps, but otherwise there are no monthly expenses. From my understanding, they only require data service if you're using something like traffic updates, or if you're using a trial version and they need use the data service for verification purposes.
I've not tried any other GPS software other than Telenav yet, but I see no reason why they others shouldn't work.
