id first like to start out by introduciing myself....im ben and im pretty sure your going to be seeing me post alot of threads/replies on this site....i should be expecting my wing in tomorrow or the next day and i was curious as to what you guys think should be my way of rom/theme....i seen the must know newb guide but i seen that its a little old....didnt know if i should just follow those instructions to flash my rom or maybe someone has a little better advice? any help would be much appreciated....just to let you know i just upgraded from a horrible horrible sidekick lx.

I just posted an answer to basically the same question in the above forum. You have to read, read, and then when you think you got it read some more. I read the directions and the forums about the ROMs for about 8 months before I hard-SPL'd and flashed my phone.
I'm not trying to be a hard ass but the posts like this and the twenty like it make it even harder to find your answers.
It will come, just have patience and remember.... there is always a chance you will end up with an expensive paperweight.

was it worth flashing the phone as far as that goes? as ive been doing more and more researching it seems to me this phone gets slower and slower...i had that problem with my sidekick and i kind of want to steer clear of that....
It was to some extent, I can use the camera without soft resetting every time.
You'll find that out quickly.
The more you have running the slower it responds, just like your desktop.
You just gotta find what works for you. I got a 4gig microSD (rumor is it will handle an 8gig) I have a lot of music on my phone. I can listen and play a game or check mail or surf at the same time without low memory warnings.
the stock has too much going and it never really closes out.
The custom ROMs usually have reg. tweaks to improve performance and make it all just run so much smoother.
another new Wing user here
Do I have to Hard SPL the wing before flashing different ROM?
I checked SPL in bootloader, and it's above 4.0
From what I read, it doesn't seem like hard SPL is required. The uspl process should work just as well
I also wonder if I should unlock my SIM first before flashing, or it doesn't matter

Hard SPL will give you more options. Most ROMs require hard SPL.
The USPL is only used at the cooks discretion. There are only a few that make ROMs with that option.
For the ones that do, you end up with the same thing using either method.
SIM doesn't really matter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358225
Follow this thread to Hard SPL your phone. A wiser man than I wrote this.
yo i had my wing for about a week, i went straight flash to open touch 4 within 5 minutes of owning it... i didnt do the hardspl.. so you dont need it..
I think for a newb, your gonna have a lot of questions and be confused about the roms.. I know i still have that doubt in my head "what if i try that one, or this one, which one is the best? wow that looks dope should i do it?" Im still playing with the phone, realizing alot of stuff on it i probably wont use..
but im curious if id benefit besides unlocking the phone.. Its kinda cool to have that title that your phone is unlocked.. but i just signed a 2 year contract so i doubt id be pulling the sim out unless im in one of those rare times when a friends phone dies and he wants to use mine lol
I agree with pseudoproto; try not to post if it is not constructive or a serious problem, which you did not manage to solve after extensive searching and reading. This is nothing personal, but just to prevent the forums from clogging up or (eventually) moderators killing your post.
There are about a dozen ROM's which have been released the past two weeks and tons of ROM's in the previous weeks. You may ask if flashing your device with a cooked ROM is the best thing to do, but this entirely depends on your personal flavour.
I suggest you wait till you have received your Wing. Try using it on it's stock ROM for a week en then decide it you would like to have the risk ending up with a expensive paperweight.
When you decide to use a cooked ROM make a selection of the ROM's which seem to be interesting. One of the most experienced cooks in this forum is ITje.
Make sure you have read all the forum posts about the selected ROM and its predecessors.
As a Touch-It adept I know for certain you will need to Hard-SPL your device before you flash the Touch-IT versions 6 and 7. Because these two ROM's are based on the P4350 edition you might have some small conversion problems.....but again read all the posts and you will know for sure.
I recommend using the Touch-IT V7.1 Public Beta, although it needs some more fine-tuning which is already in progress; this because of the extensive knowledge base in the posts and its predecessors.
Each problem you will find has been found before, each bump you wil hit has been hit before so you will not be forced to reinvent the wheel all over again. Search and read and about 99.9% of your problems will besolved.
Good luck!

how do I know if a cooked ROM require Hard SPL?
I have to admit, I only looked at Open Touch 3 and 4 thread, so I assume all cooked ROM can do either uspl or hard SPL
Guess I just learn something new
hypertek:
Thanks for the feedback. I guess it makes me feel a bit better now knowing what you did.
One reason I look at Open Touch is that it seems to be the most "compatible" with Wing
Once I learn more about cook ROM/etc, I might try others
While TMobile stock is "good enough", there's a few thing that I see "missing"
- No Profile (think HTC home has basic profiling option)
- No "easy" way to get to comm manager without using stylus (ie easily turn on/off wifi/BT)
- memory hog, both storage and program. Think any cook ROM will fix this
Of course, there's the "fun" factor tweaking your new gadget
Think I will head over to Open Touch Discussion thread and start asking questions

To be perfectly honest I tried the Open Touch first because I didn't have to Hard-SPL. I read through the thread before just to get the answers your looking for now. The reason I decided to Hard-SPL is the options...Most ROM threads will tell you within the first three posts if they need Hard-SPL or not.
Some seem to flash a little differently anyway, For instance, The Open Touch 4.1 micro flashes off the microSD card but the other flavors flash with AS4.5 and you can do it with Hard-SPL or USPL. Other ROMs are ONLY Hard-SPL.
ITje, Aserg, ivanmmj, and TTran all make very nice ROMS and all have their merits. jappo01 likes Touch-it (nice ROM) but I went back to Open Touch. I bet we could argue ROMs all night.
If you do go to the Open Touch discussion READ, so many questions have already been asked most of yours might be already answered.

You just summed up why XDA even exists!
You are looking at another Open Touch 3.0 biggy user here
It is really simple (at least for Open Touch 3.0 biggy) to flash
- get the flasher
- get the rom rar file
- unrar the rom file into the right place
- launch flasher
- press some buttons when asked to do so
- done
Only used it for less than 10 hrs, but it seems like this drain battery more than stock TMo ROM
Opera 4 mini on stock TMo ROM is decent
Opera 4 mini on Open Touch is fast!
I also get one thing I missed: hard button for vibrate! It comes in handy when i need to silent my phone during meeting
Time for Open Touch 3.0 reading
well i just got in my wing today....i was very impressed at first until i started trying to browse the web....m.youtube.com got me my first memory critically low warning....it sucks and im wondering if theres anything i could do temporarily to stop from getting that while im at work til i get home?

Read the forums. Search the forums. Then read some more.Read like you're back in school. I've had my wing for 6 months and I haven't flashed or even considered a hard spl. I have 24mb of program ram on the stock rom. I did it by reading, trying, and doing a few hard resets... I'll probably cook my own rom before I flash. There's a ton of information out there, and it's WAY too much to keep typing over and over again. That's why God created Google! Besides, it's much more fun if you customize your phone my yourself.
hey guys, i got a new xperia last night. Now i know there are many tweaks out there... wat are the best or main ones to improve ANYTHING on the phone, please share.
You're new here, so the first thing you should do is READ...and do it lots.
Take things one step at a time - you've just got your new device, so play with it as it is first. Learn it's features and quirks, discover things that bug YOU, then start investigating ways of fixing them.
There's no point spending time fixing things that bug other people, you need to figure out what YOU want.
My own personal conclusion about WM6 devices is generally that if it isn't broke, don't fix it. If you're happy with something then leave it be. Just because others have different expectations doesn't mean you should too.
If I were you I would start reading the wiki

Piece of cake: Read here in the forums, especialy the sticky threads up in the front list, then READ a little more and keep reading
You'll find lots of interesting stuff for the xperia, which ROM is better or which app should I install? well... you will have to read, search and find for yourself the apps/ROMs that fit your requirements and needs
BTW: welcome to the developers forum
If you want to mess around with different programs I would recommend you get some sort of backup program for your contacts, messages and so on. Something like PIM Backup or Spb Backup. Why am I saying this; You are surely gonna f*** up your device a couple of times in the beginning and then would need to hard reset.
Hard reset = Reset to firmware default (Like it was when you bought it if you haven't flashed anything) deleting any configuration settings and installed programs etc.
Soft reset = Rebooting (Like restarting your computer's operating system).
Don't do anything with your phone unless you are sure what you are doing. Read up on anything if you are the smallest bit in doubt!
Try to use the search function in the forum as there is a big possibility someone has asked the same question before.
Good luck.
Welcome to the greatest forum on the internetz . I can only tell you what i did. Hope that helps.
1 - Go to google and type xperia. Find some good forums about it. (seems you already got that one in the bag).
2 - Read some info about your device. What is an ARM processor, what is windows mobile, what kind of games can you play, the resolution of the device +'s and -'s. Start with the small things, before you jump to ROMs, flashing etc.
3 - Read the sticky topics in this forum.
4 - After you have done some reading decide what you want and search the forum for info about programs or games you might like. Almost all the problems you encounter or questions you might have, have been discussed in the past.
5 - Customize your x1 .
6 - And if i may quote maedox - "Don't do anything with your phone unless you are sure what you are doing. Read up on anything if you are the smallest bit in doubt!"
That's what i did. I had to hard reset it a few times but now i got my fair share of experimenting and i have customized it to my tastes. The looks, the games, the programs .
I am a newbie to this forum. I have had my HD2 for a year. I'm on my third phone and I hate Tmobile. However, since I can't do anything about changing my phone for awhile, I decided to actually try to learn about it.
1. I'm illiterate to software, hardware, etc.
2. It seems like you need to be an engineer to understand all this stuff
3. I'm trying, writing notes, looking up definitions, etc.
4. I'm struggling
Anyways I was wondering if any of you people were in my area of Pittsburgh? I would love to meet up and discuss phone stuff and improve my literacy and ability. I'm slowly getting better, but alas, I'm still an idiot....
Thank You Friends

Best advice I can give you is just keep reading.....
Even if you dont understand what your reading, read it anyway....*
Things will start to come together sooner or later. Sure it all seems confusing at first but trust me, it does all start to make sense.
Try reading the stickie threads first, the wikis contain good info too.
If theres something in particular your having trouble with then dont be afraid to ask over in the Q&A section...... try searching first though
Theres usually somebody around who'll be able to help.
Remember to try and include as much information as possible in your question though, helps to provide a more clear and concise answer.
Oh yeah..... welcome to XDA
*I stole that advice from samsamuel... (credit where credits due)
Thank you I will try to look first, but sometimes I don't even know what the heck I'm looking for!
Point in case: I can't figure out how to tether my phone with my computer?
Downloaded and have app working
Computer doesn't recognize it
No idea how to work around this
Just an example...if i can't do this I can't imagining partitioning an SD card to run android and windows 6.5....
Hmm the tethering is not an area Im too sure about, from what I've heard, a lot of the American networks require you to pay to be able to use tethering. Its available by default on my phone so I've never had to worry about it.
I would imagine that flashing a custom ROM would allow you to tether just by connecting to your computer.
As for android, if you want to run WM and Android from your SD card then theres no need to partition the card.
You just download the ROM you want.
It will be in a .zip file when you open that theres a folder called "Android".
You place that on your SD card.
Click one of the files inside. (clrcad.exe)
Then click another (haret.exe) and your off........
All the SD card android builds contained instructions in the thread how to get it running.
Like I said before, It may all seem very confusing at first but as long as you read up on what you want to do first, you'll be fine.
One thing I think is important to mention though, as your bound to have the US version of the HD2 (green and red call and hangup buttons).....
NEVER NEVER NEVER flash a radio with .51. in the name of it......
Even if you dont know what that means right now. Keep it in mind. Its the most common cause of people "bricking" their phones. 99% of problems can be fixed so dont worry but that will kill your phone instantly.
If you get to the point where you need to flash a radio, remember to check if its a good one.
Happy reading
Hello there
I am new here, I have HTC hd2 with Andriod Nand installed on it, Can some one please guide me how i can install WM7 on it, whats are steps to followed
Thanks
+1 I've read somewhere that there was an Windows Phone 7 ROM for HD2 and was linked to this thread. But there was several faults, like making the SDcard useless, no why to save anything because of no storage and other things.
So I wanted to check out this forum to see if any new Beta2 had been made, but its just a chaos of threads and versions. Trying to read through the first sticky thread, but it links to a ton of other threads and no one mentions a second release/ BETA2 for the WP7 Mango ROM.
Am not the only one given up on these forums, so is it possible to make one stickythread with the latest ROM-update, with a guide to install, the faults in the ROM ++?
EDIT:
Realised I might be in the wrong forum, and should have gone to the Q&A and general one. But even though thats a more general thread explaning alot more, it doesnt give a good guide to what you need to know, do, and fix. Am used to Windows Mobile 6.5 and do not know anything about activation, app store, updates and stuff like that.
Are you guys really serious? Is it indeed too difficult to read through some threads? Those which offer ROMs usually are titled exactly using this title...
Also, inside those threads, you´ll find short tutorials how to install a WP7 ROM on your HD2 - some flashing experience will definitely be helpful.
WP7 does not destroy your SD card, it formats it WP7-specific; if you later want to use Android or Windows Mobile, just re-format the card with SD formatter software (which is a free app).
Before you start, 3 key things:
- HSPL 2.08 must be on your device
- Radio ROM 2.15 must be on your device
- MAGLDR 1.13 must be on your device
The january/february ROMs are the very first ones, the may/june ROMs are the latest official WP7 build (called "NoDo"), there is even a brand new "beta" ROM with the upcoming "Mango" build (not yet available officially from MS).
All "NoDo" custom ROMs are jailbroken. If you want to use Live services and/or Marketplace, you need an activation code from MS. You´ll find tons of threads on how to get that code (it takes just a few minutes). For starters, maybe its best to select a ROM with WP7 build 7392 (NoDo), those run nicely.
However, if all this is too much for you, I think it might be better if you don´t flash your devices.
Hello TICTAC
I have a question to you.You have made some awesome looking Clocks for WiMob.Big thanks for that. But,is there any possibility to make something in this way for WP7?In the look of Lumetec. That was my favorit clock.
Or is this to complicated to make?

Problem is, the clock would have to be an app, not just a widget like for CHT (or even a part of the CHT home screen). I read somewhere that a tile would not work, it would consume too much energy.
There are actually a few analog clock apps in the marketplace, maybe one of the makers of those would agree doing something with my graphics. I´ll have to check this, since I move to WP7 with my HD2 now, too (got navigation running, finally).
Yeah WP7 rocks.
Thats a pity that we have no good lookin clocks for WP7.
What woul it be to make a livetile like HTC Hub or something, but in the look of your Lumetec Flip Clock.
The other clocks that you´ve ment are like APPS,like night stand or smt.
What and absolutely ridiculous question to ask when there is an abundance of info and guides on how to install WP7.
Also this is the wrong place to post questions anyway, This is the dev section not the n00b help desk, If you want to ask question do it in the Q&A forum.
The 10 post rule is bloody useless, It really needs to be 100 to make any real difference, It would stop 99% of these silly topics instantly.
MAGLDR has a SD format option incase peoples SD cards stop working properly. Also, anyone calling Windows Phone 7 "WM7" shouldn't install it as they clearly not paying attention.
Before you guys go piling up on this dude, I have to actually agree with him!
This is the 4th type of Windows phone I have had, and thus, the 4th forum I have been on this site. I am telling you guys right now, this is also the POOREST information about flashing a device I have seen on this site.
I mean, I am not clear if I have to install WM7 on my micro SD card? I have a LOT of experience flashing other Windows phone, yet, I have read, and re-read the "How to" for WM7, and I still am not clear about the proper steps.
Sorry guys, but simply, the information is NOT very clear. I certainly appreciate those that are putting in the time to develop the ROM's, and to write tutorials, etc... I really do! YOU GUYS ROCK!!! BUT......I think those of you who are writing the FAQ and what not need to take a step back and re-read your work and consider: "Would a guy who knows nothing about flashing his phone be able to follow this". Easily, you should come to the conclusion that it is not that easy to follow, simply by the fact that a few WITH flashing experience are complaining that they are not clear about the info.
With regards..............
I too find it difficult at times, could do with a simple wiki with basic flashing and rom guides, maybe just the top 5 roms.
I've also been messing around with computers, satellite boxes and phones for 30 years now....i know a bit, but not a lot....
Hello, I will ask my question here, it's regarding installation of jailbroken rom... I installed NoDo rom, and I couldn't get activation over email, is it possible to install apps without activation? my main apps would be Facebook and some app for Flickr, don't need anything else...

Well for starters you will have a hard job installing "WM7" because it doesn't exist. So that shows how much reading you have done.
There is plenty of info on how to flash WP7, I find it absolutely amazing that you are finding it hard to flash it.
You simply load magldr, select usb flasher and then load your DFT flasher up that you downloaded and flash. If you dont know how to install magldr then you should go to the magldr thread.
And FYI , WP7 goes onto NAND.
Well.......you can lead a horse to water.....

To be honest, i dont think they care. If they have gone into the effort of developing it, which isnt easy, i think they would at least expect you to do a little work, rather than them spending another few hours writting a tutorial for noobs!
I found it very easy, all i did was type in google 'wp7 and hd2' and i got a youtube video easily explaining it!! If you really want to know, you will find out.
Dev teams rely on the community, other people helping others, such as those on youtube.
You clearly havent even looked into it, otherwise you would have picked up that its WP7 and not WM7, may be trivial, but it shows that you havent really searched because entering this into any search engine and it would almost correct you!

this device flashes like all other verizon devices with the exception of the dang prl issue where im stuck at any help on that would be nice
this is info for the know hows im sorry i dont have the time or patients teach ppl how to flash thats not why i made this thread so please dont ask me how to do this and how to do that ive helped as much as i could here
PUNCTUATION !!!
And this seems suspiciously like a question, which probably belongs in q&a.
no clue what a prl is, but about the overload/oversize portion of your thread/post,
have you tried trimming out padding [hex]
you're flashing the crap out of your device
and can obviously manage your business so,
it couldn't hurt to experiment...,
and use a comma once in a while.... and the occasional period.
:silly:

after thought, dd write to dec/hex address ?
1st off all i was typing from my phone with swype but i care nothing about punctuations, 2nd if you are coming on here to criticize then move around , this is in a since a help thread but mostly to help others,i haven't seen anything anywhere providing the info i have, and last but not least i don't run a bushiness i don't even flash for money i do this for fun and for fun only so i am asking you to please stay out o this thread with any negativity

My question in response to yours was about attempting modifying the file via hex editor to remove padding, and so reduce the size of the
file, and maybe achieve a successful flash since, from your jumbled mess of a post, the best i was able to decipher was that may be the
issue.
My compliment to you was to aknowledge that you are clearly skilled in managing your device. As such, I passed the suggestion
concerning the hex editor approach and alternately the dd approach to circumvent the issue, [risky yes]
Since you want to be a fathead , my insult to you is as follows;
If you lack a sense of humour, then shove your head in a blender and you may find it. :good:
If you are meaning to create a guide thread, then do so neatly and clearly. You are not as bright as you think.
You are certainly free to request the moderator to remove my post. However "Genius" my question remains.
