problem with random atom life wifi auto on - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom General

hi peeps i been having this problem with my atom life.
sometimes my wifi will auto on.sometimes it will on after i did a soft reset.
initially i thought it could be due to some software i am running.but i did hard resets, clean rom upgrades and stuff but still having the same issue.
read somewhere that it could be due to the o2 connect thats causing the problem.but it comes together with the lastest rom upgrade how do i uninstall it.i've tried disabling the o2 connect "auto update" but its still the same.

try this.... it works for me quoted from ultimate chicken
If you see your wifi is on upon boot, even when you distinctly never turned it on:
1. Don't open the wireless manager. That is, if you still want to be able to control the wifi chip. If you open it without resolving the problem, you'll have to soft reset if you want the manager to be able to turn wifi on and off.
2. Go into Settings -> Connections -> Wifi Manager.
3. Select Turn On wifi. Wait a few seconds.
4. Select Turn On wifi again (this step will turn wifi OFF!)
If done correctly, you'll have taken back control of that out-of-control wifi chip.As usual, to avoid this completely, DO NOT SOFT RESET with a software method (like SKTools or the builtin Reset program), as this by far ALWAYS triggers the problem.

Wifi won't turn on.

Hey guys, I've been having a problem with the wifi on my universal for awhile, it just won't turn on, antenna stays off, no scanning, it's just off.
Going into the Wireless lan settings in the control panel "Wireless LAN OFF" is displayed, click "Turn on WLAN" it thinks for a few moments then returns to off with nothing changed.
Does anyone know if this is fixable? It doesn't appera to be a software issue, as it has continued on 3 diffreent ROMs... so i'm not sure how to proceed

I don't have Universal, But did you test an official rom or a cooked rom ?! because some of the cooked roms don't have the right wifi driver
I don't think its the driver, since 3 different ROMs, and no one else has complained about such thingcs in any of those ROM's, also it does work sometimes but thats maybe 1 in 20 reboots.

hello people, fist time poster here. had my uni for about a month now. very useful device, I was loving using the wifi until 10 mins ago when the whole device turned off randomly whilst browsing through wifi. plugged it in to charge, when starting up I get a couple of errors saying certain things won't start. now wifi doesn't start and I get the same problems as others on here. do we have a solution to this?? also, can I actually turn this device off? I've tried holding the power button on for 20+ seconds and had no joy.

You mean "really" off, like as no battery would be inside?
Nope, you can't
You can switch the active pda part off and set it to silent, but this wouldn't prevent the device from switching back on on phonecalls. Even if you turn off the radio stack it still would power the display's backlight on and show a notifier if a reminder was set up.
Really turning it off is only possible by removing the battery. Yes, it is a windows mobile device.
Concerning your problems after the crash you should be fine by coldbooting after recharging the battery. The latter one often causes some troubles with the Uni.

WiFi also dead but on a HTC Artemis
Hi Guys,
I have the same problem but on my HTC Artemis aka XDA Orbit. Only occurred when I was flashing with different ROMS. Even when i flashed original ROM still same thing.
I did read on the forum somewhere that the issue was due to the device not having a valid mac address.
Anyone shed any light on this matter?
There are tools out there for other HTC devices to get Wifi back but not sure if they will work on the uni as they dont work for the artemis.
i was able to get my wif working bygoing into the wireless manager then network cards and had to change it so they all were set to connect to the internet

hi @ all
this tread is a bit "past" but now i got the problem mentioned by balur. i used google and the forum search, but i was not able to find a solution. i hope smb. can help me, because i need the wifi on friday!
I solved the problem of Wi-Fi turning off by going to ActiveSync - Connection Settings and enabling "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop" option.
Wifi Stopped Functioning after flashing Roms
I have had similar wifi problems with my uni,
My uni was working perfectly for a long while when using "Tomal's 7.7" with Radio 1.18 . . . since then I tried testing with "T-Mobile official ROM AKU3.3" where the flash process when without a hitch.
However I had to change roms again since the T-Mobile rom wasn't very good. but i never got as far as testing the wifi
- - - -
I then tried to flash Tomal's 8.5 Beta, I ran into problems, and was stuck at the bootloader, I tried unlocking the uni with mtty, But i had copied and pasted the commands, and it kept on returning errors, after disconnecting and connecting with mtty again i tried typing in the commands and successfully unbricked my uni.
I attempted to flash Tomal's 8.5 Beta again, this time it worked without a hitch, but then I couldn't turn on wifi.
Wifi cannot be turned "on" from the comm manager or from WLAN. It just remains "off".
So I tried flashing back to Tomal 7.7 and wifi still didn't turn on.
Then I tried flashing Tomal 8.5 Beta again and still no wifi.
I've now tried flashing Radio 1.15 and - still no wifi
- - - -
I havn't the foggiest why wifi isn't functioning at all. Have I messed things up when I copied and pasted the commands into mtty?
Or did flashing the T-Mobile rom cause the problem?
No WIFI
Same here. I've tried 2 different upgrades now and the WIFI simply will not turn on. I've tried all the tricks in this thread, still no WIFI. anyone any ideas?

wifi

Is anyone else having problems with a sx-66 and wifi. I have upgraded to all three roms, tried radio rom 1.15 and 1.13 and still no luck. I can see the network and it attempts to connect and then drops. I am trying to connect to a linksys router and I am using wep. I have other PPC's wm5 and wm6 and they all connect no problems. It worked with the 2003se on it. Any ideas would be appreciated. I currently have the xplode rom (fixed version).
greg
I also have a sx66 and i used to have the same problems on different roms. But ever since helmis wm6 rom i have gotten it to work. I am currently using pdaviets rom.
It could just be the rom compatibility.
Im not sure if this is useful but try turning on Wlan first. Then afterwards turn on wifi.
I tried Helmi's rom with no luck, but I think I will reflash it and try again. If I don't follow the procedure that you suggested it will not work at all (wifi won't turn on).
Thanks for the suggestions... I will see if going back to Helmi's works.
greg
hi...
actually i have a helmi's rom.
i had the same problem, but i had discovered that you should turn on the bluetooth first, then turn on the wifi.
be sure you have all programs closed, and if you still haven't do it, softreset the device and try again
wlan manager first after SR
I use Helmi's WM6 rom. Issue was there in WM5 rom too, mostly after soft reset.
Workaround:
after a soft reset I first connect WiFi via WLAN manager (it tries to connect but doesn't). Then I use the COM Manager (I installed the HTC Touch 2.0 from xplode, but previous/other version also OK) and I connect without problem.
Use workaround anytime when WiFi seems non responsive.
Cheers
Ok i will explain something about wifi problems
Our drivers have a lil bugs in wm5-6
Wifi startup procedure in WM6:
1.Turn on the wifi from wireless manager (start=>settings=>connections=>wireless lan)
2.It will turn on and automatically turn off (this is afrer soft reset and you must do it after every soft reset if you want to use wifi on/off trough comm manager. it will stay on only after first usage in a fresh rom)
3.Turn on the wifi trough comm manager
4.It will detect your network(try to connect to it so the newtwork settings to be applyed - encryption, channel, ssid and password) but it will not connect to it
4. turn off wifi and then turn it back on (this time it will detect your network and it will connect)
this procedure works for me every time
i use linksys wrt54gc router with WPA TKIP encryption, tryed this on other routers and AP's also and it work flawlessly
For me, the following 2 steps always work:
1) Turn on 'Wi-Fi' from CommMgr
2) Once inside CommMgr, click (settings;Wireless LAN) and select 'Turn on WLAN'
With these 2 steps, my Wifi ALWAYS turn on (even after soft reset).
Sometimes, step1 by itself turns it on.
I programmed CommMgr to be the bottom-right icon for (Contacts) on screen.
My bottom-left button is programmed for Tomtom6.
check out xplode's HTC WLAN Manager cab
I have just installed xplode's HTC WLAN Manager cab which solved all my WiFi issues. Have a look (and download the file) at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1668110#post1668110
Also post your findings, whether it worked for you etc.
(Is there a way to combine these 2 threads (admin?), they seem a duplication.)
Cheers,

I gave up on Helmi's ROM and thought I would try yours: I wonder if your method might work better on your ROM?? If it doesn't, I assume your solution might!
But I am having problems installing your ROM: I suspect my problem might be blindlingly obvious. Your installation utility sees the BA and correctly identifies my unit and the Helmi OS. I then try to upgrade and with nothing changing on the BA, the computer stops seeing the unit and fails every time with Error 101. Sometimes if I try again it fails with Error 150. Rebooting doesn't seem to help. When it fails, curiously the upgrade utility hangs on the screen and the upgrade panel (with no progress of course) stays transparent in the foreground. I am using Windows XP and the original radio ROM as i cant see how the Radio could affect how the computer sees the BA.
Or is the BA just a buggy unit and should I stick with my Wizard? (I kinda like the thinness and size of the screen on the BA and wonder if VoIP might work better on a 400 MHz unit than a 190 MHz one?). Or has anyone managed to get any of the Wizard WM6 ROMs working on the BA?
licensedtoquill if you want to trash your BA I will take it off your hands.
The Errors you are talking about are old ones, you need to read the Wiki, not what the software says on the screen, I think from memory it says something like, do a normal reset now... ignore that and put the device into Bootloader mode (USB or Serial) then run the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe update again.
DO NOT FOLLOW STEP 1 at the following screen. DON'T DO IT!
Yes, I had noticed that one!

It's rather funny, isnt it? It is designed to send you round in circles while showing a completely different device so as to say "Told You So!" But I can't imagine any device which would take this instruction to stop upgrading and start all over again in the middle of the upgrade process???
I do seem to have completely cured my WiFi problems (perhaps slightly labouriosly) by following your instructions. But what is Xplode's .cab file for??? In any event, it doesn't install, preferring to give an 'unsuccessful' error message instead. I wonder if it is supposed to be in Xplode's ROM or if it will be incorporated into some ROM in the future?
What mystifies me is why the BA ROMs are so much smaller than the Wizard ones? That so much seemingly has to be left out of them, to be installed later with all the conflicts which seem to ensue when you do this.
In any event, I am not about to junk my BA as I do prefer it to the Wizard at the moment for the screen size alone. You really can press an icon with a finger if necessary where on the Wizard, you invariably get the wrong one pressed.
Hi,
Ive exactly the same problem as you. It keeps trying to connect but without any success. It shows Wi-Fi: Connecting and after that Wi-Fi: Available/Unavailable, but not Connected. Every time it fails, damn !

can't turn on WLAN

Hello everybody,
first of all - thank you all: helmi, xplode, all pdaviet guys, and others - you're making magic with BA roms, really thank you.
Please help me, I have an annoying problem: most of the times I try, I can't turn on WLAN. Rarely, somehow I manage to turn it on, but it happens very rarely, and this is driving me crazy.
I don't know whether it is a rom problem, or something else.
I have tried almost all roms available, because i read explode somewhere said that his last rom solved this problem...but nothing.
Something curious: this is the third BA i own, and I saw this problem before, but somehow i could turn WLAN on (I'd press the WLAN icon in comm manager many times, etc.), but on this BA it's just almost impossible to turn WLAN on.
Any ideas, please?
You need to go to the COMM manager, then go to Settings (down the bottom) > WLAN settings.
Then press "Turn on WLAN". If it doesnt come on after that, go back to COMM Manager then press wireless button.
thank you for the advice, but I'm aware of that trick - It does not help.
I used it on other BA's, and it was working, however, on this one it does not (most of the times).
Namely, I would think the WLAN module is simply dead, but then, sometimes, (unfortunately quire rarely) I manage to turn it on with the above procedure - first in comm manager, then settings, "turn wlan on", then comm manager again...
I don't get it, is it the ROM, or just my BA?
i'm using BA_ROM_CE_OS_5.2.19716__Build_19716.1.1.0_PV_DVH__16MB_Ram_16MB_PP as it is the only one that supports the new Wifiv2 driver
Do the search for "dead wlan due to erased eeprom"
Flyboy:
tried, but nothing. reflashed ba with BA_ROM_CE_OS_5.2.19716__Build_19716.1.1.0_PV_DVH__ 16MB, (the version without ram - although I don't understand what's the difference), then cold boot with no yes,yes...), installed wlan v2, but nothing, can't turn wlan on. Thank you anyway...
wit:
hmm...interesting, I assume you meant the hermes subforum topic (Dead wlan due to erased eeprom? *SOLVED*), but it's quite hard to follow, as it is for hermes... Also, posting a question there would not be liked by drummer10630, I mean he's great, helped many people, but for our BA the procedure is not the same, so he couldn't help me...
Anyway thank you all who read this, especially for your much needed help, I appreciate it.
after flash try cold boot with no NO,yes... just format the storage!!!
flyboy, tried that too, but no success.
I think I'll have to give up, I'm depressed.
****.
Bump.
Anyone else had any success stories they can post? I am in the same boat as pooksee1802.
WiFi will turn on, detect the network, go through all the settings but never complete the connection. It will connect maybe once in 20 attempts. It isn't that it simply doesn't work or is definitely broken, its just that it very rarely completes the connection. When it does complete the connection it works fine until the next time you need to connect.
i have the same issue...tried everything...no can do
wifi goes up, find the access point, requesting network key, then it retry connecting till dead by itself
i found a weird thing : whatever I set it to using Open + WEP, after tap "connect", it goes back to WPA-PSK + TKIP thing...
really annoying

Keeping on wifi connection while on standby

My D2 will automatically disconnect the wifi connection when it goes in standby. My old cruise would always keep the connection alive, so that it would be available immediately after turning it on. Is there a fix for this?
A google search reveals!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-368241.html
Edit: although that worked on my XDA Orbit 2 (Touch cruise / polaris) it dont seem to work on my Diamond 2
I found this key in the registry:
HKLM\Comm\TNETW12511\Parms\HTCKeepWifiOnWhenUnattended
and changed it from 0 to 1, but that didn't work. After a restart the value was automatically changed back to 0.
Looking around on the HD forum it seems that HD has the same behaviour. People changed that using a program called HD Tweak. I guess we need D2 Tweak...
i would also like to see a solution for this
I have experienced this problem also. If you have push internet scheduled and the phone is on standby, it retrieves the data via data connection/3G as opposed to your WiFi.
Additionally, if you take your phone out of standby, it takes a few seconds for the phone to re-establish the WiFi connection. If you are too quick to access the internet or update weather - again it will start to do this through the data connection.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
did you try Advanced Configuration Tool? You can enable/disable data connections, set them to always on and enable WiFi on standby.

Does it exist for D2 too already?
Yeah got it and it works on D2, the enable WiFi option is there
You could also go to Settings -> More -> Connections -> Wi-Fi -> Wireless networks -> Menu -> Advanced, there you can change how long the Wi-Fi radio should be on if not connected to a wireless network.
Unfortunately, www.touchxperience.com is down, so I can't download it now.

Thanks for the tip. This doesn't solve my problem, but it's good to know.
I found a 3.3 cab elsewhere. What option exactly did you change to keep wifi on on standby? The only logical one I found is Network >Turn off wi-fi if no activity. I changed that from yes to no, but that didn't help...
I know how to do it but it requires some code to accomplish - I actually tested this yesterday on my TD2 (the advanced config trick does not work with TD2). Unfortunately I do not have the TD2 with me right now ... Perhaps I'll muck with it a bit later anyways, else you'll have to wait 'til I have the TD2 in hand again Monday or Tuesday.
It takes a ****load of power to do this though, and I'm not sure if it works in true suspend... it works for unattended mode though.
Well, I found the option in advanced config 3.3, hidden under "More options". But indeed it doesn't work. Wifi still disconnects on standby and starts reconnecting after standby. If you have a solution Chainfire, I'd be happy!
Tomkarb, can you confirm that the Advanced Config trick really works for you?
Isn't there anyone that has a solution? The Schapps advanced config thing just doesn't work
The solution is in here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524490
Thanks! That works indeed!
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\TNETW12511\Parms]
"HTCKeepWifiOnWhenUnattended"=dword:00000001
I never found that out, because I always soft reset immediately afterwards, thinking that was necessairy for the change to become effective. The soft reset wiped the change away though.
I've made a cab that changes the registry value to 1. It also copies the cab to the installationdir and adds a shortcut to it in the start menu. So you just have to run it from the start menu after each soft reset/restart (if you need wifi on standby). It only works when you execute it when wifi is off. Turn it on after installation.
There's a great freeware that i use called WkTask, which is a launcher, among other things, and it has the option of turning off the screen, but not putting the phone into standby. Disable the automatic power off and turn off the screen, this should solve your problem. However, i'm pretty sure your battery will drain a whole lot faster with the device never entering standby and the wifi on.
For added functionality, create a shortcut in the windows directory called 'long_power.lnk', and point it at the same file that WkTask uses (you'll see the path when you add it to the launcher, its a 'command call' btw). Then you can press and hold the power button to turn the screen off instead of powering off the phone (which is something i never do, does anyone?)
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the tip. I don't use wifi very often, only sometimes to remote control my pc. So most of the times I want it to go in standby and save as much power as possible with wifi off.
BTW, another solution for some of you may be to use a different ROM. I'm using Topaz Essentials 1.6 ROM (TESS1.6) from chef Aman now, and this ROM doesn't have the wifi turning off problem.

Does not work on my HD2

[HELP] WiFi isn't working / turning on!!

Xda-viewers,
yesterday i tried to put on my WiFi, but it didn't work anymore
I have my HD2 for about 1month, very happy with the phone,
and this is the first mayor malfunction
When i press WiFi ON in the comm-manager it shows it's loading,
and then nothing, doesn't go ON,
turned the phone off-on, soft reset.. nothing..
anyone else had this glitch?
hard reset or other solution?
It always worked, untill yesterday
If I were you I would go for a full backup with SPB, and then restore (maybe excluding everything regarding the wifi) after a hard reset
I would try doing hard reset.
However, I had the same problem with my old Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox N560 and they had to exchange mainboard.
Do you have it charging? I can't seem to connect to any Wifi networks when I have the phone plugged in. Once i disconnect it, it works fine.
If you are connecting it using USB, make sure WMDC / ActiveSync is set to allowing your phone wireless connections while connected to your PC!
???
phone is fully charged
not connected to PC or anything
not working, going to try some things
anyone goto suggestions except hard reset?
else i hard reset tommorow,
thankz
You mean you can't turn ON or NOT CONNECTING?
If its not connecting, did you try to delete the connection settings from advanced wireless settings and try reconnecting again?

I've got exactly the same problem - have only noticed it today.
If I go into wireless network config and select my network there and click connect, it takes ages before it says "connected" and then immediately changes to "not connected". I've obviously checked and rechecked my settings. It simply will not connect any more.
i also can't remember installing an update which would cause this probleme..
Connected to PC
When connected to PC, in the comm manager, the WLAN is dissabled, can't even push it, maybe something went wrong with disconnecting and this is the reason why my WiFi is not working - going on?
Anyone?
I'm not at home, so can't do anything with mine at the moment, but out of curiosity, did you use then Wifi N option in BsB Tweaks? That's the only thing Wifi related that I can think of touching recently.
Tried it
Indeed, thought the same,
tried to put Wifi-N off, soft-reset, but no change
Almost at the edge of HARD-reset

I really hope it doesn't need a hard reset. I'm not gonna be happy if I have to do that AGAIN!
I'm gonna keep searching, in the hope of finding a solution.
Out of curiosity, do you ever use the Wifi router app?
WM-Wifirouter
I tried to use the Wlan-Router with Comm manager,
didn't work that well,
installed app I had on my P3600: WM-Wifirouter,
this worked like a charm,
Timo
I've solved my problem! Yay!!
I don't know if this will be of any help to you, but give it a try and see how you get on.
Basically, when using the in-built wifi router, it assigned the IP address 192.168.1.1 to the wireless adapter. This is fair enough, for a router, but obviously not for when you want to connect to a wifi network and get assigned an IP address automatically.
I had seen other people suggest that this may be the problem, so I'd already checked my IP settings for the wireless adapter, and they were set to automatic.
However, if you run the wifi router and then go to your IP settings, it says 192.168.1.1. Set it to automatic while the router is running.
This made my phone get a bit upset, and I ended up reseting it, but since then I've been able to connect to my home network again.
So...
1. Run and start the wifi router
2. Go to settings, Connections, Wifi, Wireless networks, Network Adapters (tab)
3. Select the network adapter (Broadcom 802.11 DHD Network Adapter)
4. Change to use a server-assigned IP address, instead of a specific one
5. Click OK
6. Reset the phone - don't close the wifi router app first.
7. When it starts up, go to the comm mananger and disable wifi.
You should now be able to start wifi and connect to your home network. (It may do it automatically if you don't do step 7 - I'm not sure).
Give it a try and let us know how you get on
Sensational johncmolyneux!!!
I had this problem too - it was doing my head in, but now seems like an obvious conflict. Thanks for finding the solution.
Now all I need to do is solve my BT Voice Commander problem (reported in many other threads) and the HD2 will have the same functionality as the Hermes it has replaced ;-)
Cheers,
Lordbowl
You still haven't hard reset?! I am doing hard reset every 6days because of mod/theme and other crap testing
Backups with resco/pim/office2007 entreprise on windows 7 beta do the trick to have phone working in 15 minuts.

-When I try to connect the WLAN-Router with the Comm Manager, it keeps on loading and nothing happens.
-When I try the WM-Wifi-Router app which I used on my P3600, it says not abble to connect WLAN
-All my settings are server-assigned-IP-address
Still not able to put on my WLAN,
Timo
