Can HTC block a phone? - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

Hi all, i had a bad start to the new year...some teenager snatched & ran away with my Touch Dual this morning (dawn,it was dark).
Anyway, my Telco can only deactivate the SIM card. I called HTC to check if thr was a way to BLOCK the phone in anyway...but their office is closed as its new years day.
Any1 has any ideas wat i might be able to do? I dnt think i'll see it again but its really disappointing. some luck huh?
p.s. I intend to get another touch dual the soonest i can afford it..
daddypool

What do you expect from them to block? I think you want something that's not possible. However, I know that in Holland, the police somtimes sends a sms-bomb to the IMEI number of a stolen phone. I don't know where you're from. but maybe the police in your country can do that to. It seems very anoying to me to receive lot ant lots of sms messages about using a stolen phone

i thought it was up to your network to get the imei barred? if your network wont help i doubt if HTC will do much.

Go to Police with your IMEI!

the IMEI is also on the box the device came with

i was under the impression you can break a phone if you have its imei

I'm sorry...

I can't believe the nerve of that little jerk. Your bad experience just gave me an idea. I once put an app on my Magician that when a different Sim card was inserted into my phone, it would send me a text/email with the telephone number of that Sim. I never had to use it so I can't say for sure that it actually worked. I guess I should've tested it. But anyway, my point is; I'm going to find that app and post it for all.
Can't wait until you get your Dual back.

yep, i came across that software before too..now i wish i had tried that. (well, another lesson in life!)..my only saving grace is i have everything i need backed up. with the IMEI number, which i already gave the police, the only way the thief will be caught if he tries to sell to a 2nd hand mobile phone shop.
by the way, im in Singapore, one of the lowest crime rates in the world. but hey, still, low crime doesnt mean no crime.
oh my, i miss my phone so much...haha..now i can just laugh about it. i just checked the retail price of the dual here...it will cost me about USD 700. sigh...

luckycris0,
if u find that app, pls post it here...thanks..
after this lesson, i will use that, if not for anything....just for karma.

Hope that helps.

Here's an app that's similar to what I was talking about in my post earlier. The trial version is available from handango.com and it's about 25usd to purchase. Give this a try. I'm certainly going to on both my Nike and Polaris. I'm still going to try and locate the app so you all don't have to pay for it but since that time, I've changed laptops countless times, but I always save everything to disc so we'll see.

thks
thks guys...i will definitel try these apps...once bitten twice shy!
ystrday, i jus bought myself another TOUCH DUAL!...got it at a better offer..had 2 sign a new 2year contract for another telco line...& gave the line to a loved one to use...

Uhm.
I read a few years back that your operator can block the whole phone, not just the SIM card. Never needed to use it, I have no idea if it really works.
Bad luck!
Anyway, thx guys for the app! can really be handy!

will one of these appz survive after a flash or hard reset? guess not So, they are pretty useless in front of phone guardian for symbian in example

Nexus Stolen...

Tonight at Golfland in Mesa AZ, my sons 10th birthday, set my phone down for a second to grab my 3 year old daughter. Less than a minute later I realized that my phone was gone, and immediately began scouring the area. There was a line of people waiting to ride the gocarts and because of the location I had my prime suspects. I asked everyone in line nicely once, looked around again, and then asked again not-so-nice. (I'm 6'8" and not skinny) No one fessed up, so I gave a report to the security guard and had a Golfland manager announce the lost phone across the PA. (yeah right, that was going to work...)
The manager found me 15 min later with my phone in her hand! It was found in the mens restroom (about 150 yards from where I knew I lost it). The cover was gone and it was stuck in the boot screen. I pulled the battery to reboot and noticed my sim and 16gb microSD were gone. I've got the a19 Desire rom. Is it normal that it won't boot without the the SD storage? I can still get into recovery, but without the storage I have nothing to recover. Also, I had an older ROM where I had registered with WaveSecure, but never logged in or activated with the current ROM. WaveSecure wouldn't have saved me this time would it?
I wonder if the thief realized that the phone could be tracked via GPS and that was the reason they dumped it. Kind of a crappy story with an alright ending, but I'm still out a SIM card and $50 for another microSD.
I don't think the desire rom has anything running on the sd card except appstosd which wouldn't effect how it boots up , try getting a 512 mb card or somthing and reflash the rom.
Thats kinda wierd too, usually people take the phone and leave the sim card not take the sim card and leave the phone. Call at&t or tmobile and tell them your sim was stolen and they can see if the guy makes any calls on it or inserts it into another phone.

If he had been using App2SD it would boot loop if the SD card was removed.
OP:
Wavesecure probably wouldn't have done anything in that case since you hadn't signed back in. Wonder why they took your SIM and SD card, but left the phone? Maybe they saw the wavesecure app in the drawer, and got scared?
damn sorry to hear that if you install wave secure on it you could log on to the Wave secure site and disable your phone, and if you're like me you can leave them a message asking them to return it, this message would be displayed on the phone..
but only if you had wave secure installed...
Good luck man
If he stole that SIM you better cancel your sim or deactivate it.
The phone will not boot right now, but I'll get a new memory card in the morning and try reflashing. I'm not using app2sd so I was surprised the phone won't boot. I don't have t-mobile or ATT, but a local Carrier. I'll also report the SIM stolen in the morning.
The more I think about it, the more i'm convinced that I spoke with the guy who had my phone when it was missing. I think my angry demeanor and menacing size might have made him think twice (causing him to dump the SIM and the memory card) and then think thrice (just decided to dump the whole thing). Who knows...
aww man that would have been sooooo funny if you had wave secure. You're asking the guy if he has your phone, he says no, you activate the alarm and your phone starts screaming from his pockets, he pees his pants, you knock his lights out and get your phone back, justice is served

Lmao I would pay money to see that.
Never leave a nice phone unattended! People suck. Put it in your pocket when you are done.
I unfortunately missed the deadline for free WaveSecure but I installed an alternative called Mobile Defense. It works well enough, I can log in and enable it to track with GPS and make it sound an alarm and or message. I even installed it as a system app so it has the authority to enable GPS if it is disabled.
I have never lost a phone before and I hope to keep it that way, but this gives some peace of mind.
Wouldn't be cool if Google added a tab to Gmail that allowed you to input your Android phones and track them via GPS etc?
Man, that would be awesome. Get on it Google!
about stolen nexous one
I know that WaveSecure does not let you have 3g our will not let you connect data without a password. Even if you don't sign up for it when someone else puts there sim in your phone it tells you on boot up that this phone is not your and its this persons number (our something like that lol lol )
I now because i bought my friends nexous one because he has att and could not get 3g and i had tmobile and wanted to sell my mytouch and buy his nexous
and he bought the new att nexous
Everything worked great when i bought the phone off him but i went from cyanogens rom to modaco r19 and it said that the sim card is not the owner of this phone. so i had to call him and he did not set up a code with wavesecure so we had to email them and do a reset and they email me back the code to reset it..
that is what saved your phone the punk put his sim in your phone and it would not work our told him its your phone. You should have kick someones A***
i hope you get it all fixed
sorry to hear about what happened... Golfland always has sketchy people floating around there at night so I cannot say I am surprised...
if u catch the thief wot would u do? kill him init lol?
let him eat your cooked rom lol
Bummer...to bad WaveSecure wasn't there to shut it down.
Hmm, Reasons why the phone wouldn't boot may be because he/she probably tried to flash any rom you had without wiping or tried wiping the phone and did something wrong. So its safe to say the person tried to do some type of wipe.
That means he/she must have had some previous knowledge on how to do so. Now go find the person you think has that knowledge....
Finally got home with a new microSD card and did a wipe and reflashed. It took a couple minutes but it finally came up. I'll be getting a new SIM tomorrow. I booted with no SIM, and there was a message waiting from WaveSecure: "This phone may be lost or stolen." in bold type. I'm guessing the thief booted the phone with no SIM and saw the same message and dumped it.
Yeah, I think who ever snagged it had half a clue what they had, otherwise they might have kept it.
For someone who loves gadgets, as corny as it sounds, I feel like I've got a second chance of sorts. I probably wouldn't have bought another Nexus, at least not for a few months. I guess I just appreciate it more now that I nearly lost it. I want to hack it some more to do more cool crap.

Luckiest Android User Ever

So I was helping a customer today (I'm a Tmo Employee) with their rate plans and then started talking to him about some phones. Well he pulls out a Nexus One out of one of the stock N1 pouches and told me he FOUND this (who the hell finds free stuff like this?!) and wanted to check if it was a Tmo or ATT version because his internet wasn't working. I verified it was a Tmo version and it wasn't working for him because he had the Blackberry internet on his plan. When I asked if he wanted to change it he was like oh no I like my Blackberry. Then here is how the next part went.
Guy: Do you know anybody that would want to buy this?
Me: As a matter of fact, I'll be glad to take it.
Guy: How about $200?
Me: How about I go to the ATM next door RIGHT NOW!
So now I'm the owner of another N1 so this one goes to my GF. Buuuuuut the best part is, it isn't just the normal one. This one has the picture of the Android waving a flag on the back with no HTC branding. Hmmmmmmm...
Just had to share this. Was too excited about it not to! lol
Just bought your self a brand new stolen ('found' is an alternative word for stolen) N1 Concrats! It's the best device with Android!
so let me translate for you.
This guy steals an N1 and brings it in to your store and asks if you'll pay him $200 for it and you say yes.
Got it...
You sound like a goddamned thief to me.
Disgusting.
could easily track down the original owner in minutes...
but my question is, why is there an android flag and no htc branding? Is it a special phone?

I'm thinking it could be a Beta phone or something? Looks like one of the ones that Google employees were given and were not supposed to "sell" BUT I have heard of some that have been "lost" from employees and were bought from people. But the phone had no SIM card and looked wiped when I got it. Was at the stock 2.1 home screen.
The guy didn't "look" like he stole it. Nice guy, wife, 2 young kids. I'm pretty sure the guy found it somewhere.
Grats on buying stolen goods. Not the smartest thing to brag about, either.
Or possibly you've just met a Google worker that was quietly getting rid of his phone
i would have bought it too shiiiiit lol
The guy said the other guy found it. How the hell are you guys jumping to the conclusion that it's stolen?
The word "found" is similar to the word "stolen"?
So when my car stereo was missing out of my car one day, someone just found it and it actually wasn't stolen? Maybe this, I found 20 bucks on the street once but I must've stolen it right?
BTW, congrats on getting a awesome deal. Ignore the haters and you and your girlfriend enjoy the phone.
Damn you are really LUCKY android user. 200$ it's nothing for that phone
'The word "found" is similar to the word "stolen"?'
Maybe i said it wrong but i meant in this sentence it's an other word for found... And i'm not a hater just know how people are, they don't come in and say "i just stole the phone want to buy for 200 bucks?" That would be stupid! it's pretty clear it's stolen but i wouldn't care about it I'm Happy for the new owner and wished one day someone comes to me for a cheap good as new phone for 1/3 of the origional price (i got my hero for 150 bucks @ releaseday, found by someone i know )
Grats on capitalising on someone elses misfortune.
I'd gladly buy your phone if it was found/stolen rather than try and track you down. (/not. it's very easy to track down the owner of a lost phone for which i have done multiple times).
Did you keep the guys contacts & messages on their or just go and delete them? so as not to spark your conscience. How about when you were deleting the owners google login details to put your own in its place? did that make you feel all light and giddy too?
You work for T-Mobile, someone brings in a T-Mobile version of the N1 and you buy it rather than trying to find the owner on your internal system?
Morally bankrupt
SC
If I worked in your store and someone brought in a "found" phone, then (a) it wouldn't have left the store again, and (b) I would NEVER, EVER, have offered to buy it. Totally reprehensible.
If you find something it doesn't automatically become yours. You're no better than a common thief. In fact, you're worse, because you knowingly paid money for it.
I'd expect the manager to back me up on (a) and help track the original owner down. I can assure you that if you worked for me and I found out about this, you'd be out of the door so quick you'd wonder what happened.

No way to track down people from IMEI's :-/
I'll give OP the benefit of the doubt based on his story of how the events went down.
People lose phones all the time... that's why applications like WaveSecure exist. Without having any such application on the phone, it gets to be rather difficult to find the owner - especially if all data has been wiped from the device. Without a SIM card, there's not really anything to tie the device to its previous owner.
It is kinda sketch, but I don't think the OP is in the wrong here.
I give it a week before its IMEI blocked

[Q] HTC desire hd lost&found

hello guys, I just found a HTC desire hd in the bar where I work, its been 2 weeks since the guy lost it, what should I do, I know that this phone might be traced by internet or gps, or maybe I dont know, maybe I'm wrong...now I just want to keep it. any danger?
thanks
It probably can be if he's set it up right, but you can use that to help return it to him (assuming that's what you're intending). As far as I know it does use GPS.

The right thing to do is find out who's phone it is and return it , its pretty easy with the data kept on phones "now a days".. The HTC online service can used to lock the phone , wipe data , track phone etc. But this feature is useless if the phone is off or the sense account is deleted or changed on the phone.
Correct me if I'm wrong !

Previous post is completely correct. I'd just return it save you the trouble. I mean put yourself in their shoes, how would you feel if you lost you phone?
Do the right thing. Return it.
Hand it in to your local police station, make sure they log it and give you a reference number. Then after a set period of time, possibly 4 weeks, if the owner has not claimed it you can legally claim it.
However, the owner has probably reported it as lost and had it network barred. Not sure if you can then get it removed, but that is the right thing to do.
you'r right dude thanks

I found some guys phone once, read his msgs and txt a few people to let them know I had found it. He rang me up on it and asked me to meet him at a certain place and time, I told him I was working at that time so would have to meet him an hour or so later, he went mad at me over the phone saying I should meet him when he said! I just laughed at him and told him Id be there later. After meeting up with the guy he showed no appreciation for what I had done to get his phone back to him, some people huh?
Wow miclair. That is just sad. You have much more class than I do. Still showing up and giving them the phone after they get.mad when you were trying to.do the right thing. I commend you for that.

Try and trace the owner or hand it in would be a good start.
Trace the owner, and if you cannot find them, hand it in to the nearest police station to where you found it.
Alternatively contact the carrier who can trace the sim number or mobile number of the phone and find the owner.
keep it, if you drop yours you have a spare one ,
unless the owner calls the phone. than you can give it back >.>
If you dont hand it in you will probably find the IMEI gets blocked by the carrier when it gets reported missing, so wont be of much use as a phone anyway.
Hand it in, if it was your phone I am sure you would wish for the same.
shouldn't be too hard to trace the owner, so do it.
If you can turn WiFi and gps on and leave the phone powered on (Samsung dive) else turn it in.
Step 1: Check the call log and call one of the numbers the person dials often. That's sure to be a friend/family member of the person.
Step 2: Tell them you found the phone and let them put you in touch with the owner.
Step 3: Return the phone to its rightful owner.
Step 4: Enjoy the boost in Karma.
The owner uses Samsung Dive and is tracking you right now. It's a guy, he's 6'4," 250lbs, and read this thread on XDA. Now what are you going to do
I don't understand the question. Is that just me?
There's only 1 thing to do, and that's ring someone (as suggested above) and return it to its rightful owner.
Edit: Alternatively, check the email address of the owner and get in touch with them that way.

What ever you do, never hand it to the police. it will end with them. This should be the last option If all the others don't work. Better it ends with the rightful owner as first option or you as last but one option.
What would you do if you found 5000 dollars on the floor? Hand it to the police? If you can't trace it, they can't.

I dont think you can call the guy a thief, he found the phone, did not steal it from anybody.
Now morally, thats a different matter.
I would try and trace the rightfull owner and return his phone.

I agree with OrionCarl in this case. Just because you find something doesn't mean it doesn't belong to someone else. Keeping it when you know that it does is the equivalent of stealing it.
Cool story bro!

Locked Out

Hi!
I need help bypassing the pattern Lock!
Short story:
ordert the phone from amazon. didn't arrive in time. one day after estimated delivery date the parcel lies opend in front of the door. phone with inserted battery is still in it. all the stuff like charging or earphones is missing.
went to police and so on. for the fun of it i started the phone to look if the thief maybe made some photos or sent some messages before "returning" it. problem: he enabled a pattern lock. now i see no possibility to look if he/she maybe did something stupid like writing a message or taking a photo. i want to get that stupid kid (has to be a neighbor) ...
so maybe someone can answer here or write a pm ...
i DO NOT want to do a factory reset. i want to get to the last calls and messages!!!
thx in advance and excuse my bad english
Strange story. I would contact the post office or company that delivered the phone. Not sure what country your from but in my country it's not legal for postal service to just leave a parcel at the doorstep.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
alreday went to the post office and the police. amazon didn't send t as a real parcel, more like a letter, therefore it wasnt insured. the posal service didn't leave it in front of the door. it was stolen out of a mailbag and then, a day later, returned to us ... we don't understand it ... we hope amazon will send us a new one, but i want to find out who did that!!!

Who steal packages from the mailbag, take out the cheap stuff and deliver the most expensive piece to the recipient a day later?
I call BS.
ya +2 on tht ?lol leaving the phone an taking the ear phones sounds negative.....well the pattern locks r easy to open try all combination of 3x3x3 its simple , not thoughp like rubiks cube...
our only explanation:
neighbor kid stole it, parents found out, kid 'gave it back' or kid got scared ... no idea ...
it all just sucks ... i would wish to find out who was it to understand that stupid person ...
Sounds to me more like you 'found' someone else's phone and are trying to get into it. But giving you the benefit of the doubt ...
Hold the screen at an angle to a light source and look for a greasy finger streak where the lock pattern has been sketched.
if i would have found it, i think i would have had better stories
tried some of the bypasses i found on the web, seems that most of the security holes are fixed (gj samsung )
Amazon already answered that they send a new one.
Only reason why i want into it, is to find hints who stole it in the first place.
If i would have "found" it i would just make a hard reset.
People give the kid a break come on now, its not funny when UPS,TNT etc get lost on their delivery runs. The driver delivering this package got lost their satnav crashed their mobile fone went dead and you know what, they took their sim card out of their fone and opend this package placed their sim card in this SGS2 just to use the GOOGLE maps just so you could have you fone. Now thats service with a smile lol

lmao. what a funny thread.
To the OP, grab her itemised bill instead and save urself the hasle of trying to bypass the pattern lock. lol
If youre story is genuine on the other hand, just be happy ur getting a replacement. Sell the locked one to me, give you £100 for it.
Try this.
Put another sim in it. Call that number. Answer it. While still in the call press the back or home button. You should now be on the home screen. You should also be able to check call logs / messages etc.
I did this on a friends S1 when their kid locked them out of the phone due to too many pattern attempts.
Not sure if it will work on the S2 but worth a try.
