Hi I'd like to know whats the USB pin layout on the O2 Atom as my mini USB plug fell off and I'm trying to solder it back to gather.
So far i manage to get it charging again but I cant get data through it.
Also I wonder if anyone can tell me how to make a USB charging cable so that i can plug it into the PC and charge without activesync(without using WM5storage, just plug and charge) or I can charge via car charger(I know this can be done with a special adaptor but I'd like to make my own)
Help is very much appreciated Thx.
well i suppose that no one really know about it so if possible for those who already have thier Atoms opened up, take a high ress pic of the USB plug showing the pins and post it for me.
thx

actually i have a cable(which came with a universal battery pack) that allows me to do what i want but its in a bad shape hence I'd like to make another.
usb is pretty much usb htc's carry audio too but people report that normal miniusb in 1 end and usb in the other works just fine
and any device connected to usb's 5volt and ground get power even if the pc dont see it as a usb device it still provide 5volt and 0.5amps to them
thats how usb cup wamers and plastic dogs humping the usb port works
See here @ Wikipedia for details on pin-outs

After using the XDA 1 since its release, I managed to get a SPV M1000. many advantages however Video and Camera are not very good !
Problem:
I charge from my sync when my desktop PC is on however as soon as I swich my desktop PC off the USB loses power ? and stops the charging. Is there a setting for this ? or is this normal ? my XDA 1 does charge from the USB when the desktop PC is off !
any ideas please

no phone or webcams (cmos chip video )that i've seen is very good quality, suppose thats the price one pay for lower power comsuming and cheap production cost and smaller size
about the xda2 then at least my cradle have a connector where i can plug in the charger adaptor if i want to charge without having my computer on
unless orange use a different cradle which i doubt then you too can plug in that charger if it dident come with the device you can prob buy it or use any charger with the same connctor and power voltage
Im sorted !
Stupid me !
after using the XDA 1 sync for so long, I forgot about the adapter being pugged in to the sync. However the handbook that came with it does not advise on charging so not entirely my stupidity.
thanks anyway
I think it depends on your PC's motherboard too. I have USB power to the cradle all the time, even when the PC is shut down. I don't use the power charger with the cradle ever - it's only for emergencies.
I agree. I have an abit Nf7-s motherboard and the usb port still delivers power when my computer is down
not if you pull the plug it dont
it all comes down to if the vsb 5volts standby
is connected to the usb
when there is an option in the bios to let keyboards turn on ones computer then it should work
if the usb is on a pci card like some of my usb2 cards is then it's up to the card
pretty sure mine dont
Hi, I have small problem with my universal charger. I tried to use another which is auto charger from 0.1A to 1A (standard USB), i try to use normal USB cable with mini usb end. And it is not working, when i used the same cable with computer it is working and charging.
Maybe someone have a mini usb universal connector scheme, how to connect (+5V and -5V) to charge, maybe I have mised something... how many A I need to put on it 1A, 500mA, 550mA ... ???
Thanks ..... Waiting ..... )))
Not sure if it's related, but if you try and use a standard USB cable with one of those cigarette lighter to USB power things it doesn't work. I had to connect pin 4 and 5 of the mini USB together to get it to charge my Exec.
Cheers,
Steve.
Which one is 4 and 5 ??? It is + or - Any scheme ???
Joning 4 and 5 is ok. Thanks ! Topic is closed.
Glad it worked.
Cheers,
Steve.

I've tried this with the Proporta CL->USB plug and found that if you plug the USB cable in with the Universal switched off, it will start to charge after 10 seconds, I can then switch my Universal on and it will still be externally powered.
Took a few weeks before I worked out the trick of switching it off and waiting for the orange charging light to come on!
I can't seem to find a usb to "whatever it is" wire selling..

yes... u r rite... itz a MICRO USB...
But it can't supply power to a USB device, so it can't be used like a PC USB port. It's only good for recharging and syncing.
so if i want to buy an additional wire, i look for a USB to MICRO USB wire right? no need to buy from HTC right?
cause i saw one usb that is smaller but it doesn't fit.. is there a MINI USB port too?
am confused

Erm yes it can,
Actually better take the device with you. Sellers here told me there is like 7 different very similar connectors. However this one should be the standard micro USB, which is supposed to be universal charger/sync cable in the future (at least in EU).
And yes, of course, there is mini USB. And there even are more versions of mini USB, for example HTC used their own.
You had better use HTC cables. HD2 is microusb, but not all microusb cables are good for HD2. Like iPhone, it takes a large charging current, and many no brand cables cannot do it. I've got a third party cable that syncs only, but if charged from the PC, the HD2 will say that the charging current is too small. Battery actually drops when I connect HD2 to PC using this cable (because my options set it that backlight is always on when HD2 is connected). Other combinations are OK:
original cable + AC plug: charging OK
original cable + PC: charging OK
third party cable + AC plug: charging OK
third party cable + PC: "insufficient charging current"
Be careful with cables- you'd be better to buy the genuine HTC version.
Many USB/MicroUSB cables are for charging only, and don't have the data pins connected. Thats OK if you just want to charge it while you are away from your main PC or power supply.
You can also buy a miniUSB/MicroUSB adapter for charging using and older miniSUB charger, but again these don't have the data pins connected.
I bought a number of 3rd party USB to microUSB cables a month ago for sync and charging (office, PC, bedside charging), so far so good... no issues (maybe I'm lucky). The OmniaII uses the same connector, so I'm using the HTC car charger to charge both.
I bought Nokia's cable (for E71,N97,etc.) and it work just fine with charging from laptop. much cheaper than HTC in here.
if you are going for the cheapo option...
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=MICRO+USB+SYNC%26+CHARGE+CABLE+for+HTC+HD2+HD+2+Leo+T8585
i got a couple from ebay - arrived the next day. - charge/sync fine.
charger from iPhone
The iPhone charger coud be used for charging HD2. Just plug the microUSB cord instead of iPhones and ... voila. The same outputs
N86-8megapixel cable doesnt work..
So I managed to leave my HTC cable at work (2 days after getting the Telstra HD2 in OZ) and now I am on 4-5 days leave from work and really want to tinker with my phone. I think I may end up having to go back to work to collect the HTC cable - as below... challenge to get non-HTC cable to work.
I found that my wife's N86-8megapixel nokia has a similar micro-usb cable.
When connected to the PC the phone starts charging and the PC does the "doo-doop" sound a "appears" to connect to the phone, but active sync cannot detect the phone \ sync.
I see others have had success with nokia cables - I am wondering if there is something wierd going on.
I posted this on Plopper's thread here(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923864) but thought it might be better here as I might get a quicker reply
"I have bought a 4 way USB hub which has a usb socket on its input lead. This can be plugged into your PC or into a usb mains charger or usb car charger.
If the input lead is plugged into one of the four output sockets and the lead is cut open and the red and black wires are exposed, a 2A 5v charger can be connected to these wires by twisting together and taping.
This then powers both sides of the hub with 2A supply and by-passes the protection.
It does sacrifice 1 output socket but HD2 +keyboard+mouse= happy Ubuntu
Will this work?"
I am dying to try it but thought I'd check with tech savvy types first.
Edit; I am thinking now that the green and white data cables in the input leads may have to be cut and the ends taped, but it may not matter(?)
Have attached photo of the hub and the charger
The charger is an old Nokia one and has a lump of plastic near the end which I assume houses a fuse of sorts.
Reading through Plopper's thread again I am sure this is OK, but am unwilling to brick my HD2!
You could get a 7 way usb hub and add things like external HDD or (my favourite) a usb fan to cool down your HD2!
Working
OK over 300 views of this thread and no reply!
this usually means the idea is a dud or its been done before!
I have searched around but can only find y-cables, which supply extra 500mA from another USB socket but only allow 1 device connection.
If this has been done before, I apologise.
However, I got bored of waiting and went ahead with cutting up leads and splicing wires. I flashed WM6.5 and loaded Ubuntu 0.3 (only one with USB host that I can find!)
AND IT WORKS!!!!!
I had to buy a micro USB cable because I didn't want to cut my stock one (get a data cable because a charging cable only has 2 wires in it).
Note on cable colours, apparently there may be variation on some manufacturer's cable core colours, take care to identify by tracing circuits on the hub and checking continuity from the pins to each core.
Also, being an electrician, I am wondering what the current carrying capacity of the tiny core cables are, I will have to look it up at some point (adiabatic equation) meanwhile check for overheating.
Enjoy! (something to do on wet weekend!)
Homemade USB
i made this, unfortunately i can't use it with 0.3 bucouse i installed magldr and i use Android, and linit tutorial doesn't work for me

Impressive!
It sure beats the above from me.
What do you use it with?
What else might support USB hosting?
I prefer to use WP7 and Android too (see sig)
i made it for HD2 for use it with Ubuntu, i hope that the v0.4 come out soon and with usb host support...
Doh!
467 views after first posting this and after re-reading plopper's thread again I have realised what plopper and Mister B were saying in their last posts.
There is no protection in unpowered usb hubs, so no need to bypass it!
I have over-complicated everything.
It is only necessary to change the hub lead plug to a microUSB one and then connect the charger to the usb plug which you have just cut off, then plug it into one of the spare ports.
Oh well never mind!
i take a photo with HD2 on it http://i53.tinypic.com/34dr96v.jpg
很好很强大!
nice... ...but, don't smoke so much....
Guys,
For those using Android, you can try Dorimanx's latest 2.9.9 ROM which claims to have USB Host enabled. I don't have a USB OTG cable to try it on, but let us know if having a self-powered USB hub works on it. Thanks

i tried it (XB V.19 that is based on it, with the same kernel USBH enabled) but unfortunately it doesn't work, i saw in the system partition of this rom and i saw that there aren't any driver for USB hardwares support (USB Keyboard, mouse, USB Flash memory...)...so i think that the problem is this (no drivers support)

hi folks,
i would to like to build a micro usb hub.
e.g. 1 male connector and 2 female connector.
does anybody have experience in micro usb to stabilize the voltage and current?
thanx

That would be interesting to see, I think your gonna need drivers for that as well because your gonna need a switch to cycle back and forth on what connector your using, and thats gonna be hard to do from scratch. I was contemplating doing something similar to that but wound up at a dead end. If you figure it out let me know.
it won´t need a driver. i want to build as a host hub. but the current is too low i think, so it is difficult to stabilizise the current,,

It's not a question of stabilizing the current.
It's supposed to be 5 volts throughout the USB spec.
If you are using a cell phone as the host, that already produces regulated 5 volts through a charge pump.
The amount of current out of a cell phone is maybe around 100 mA.
That's what you have to work with.
If it's not sufficient for what you want then you need an external power source, not a regulator.
Hubs can be power hogs.
The spec says that a hub can take up to 100 mA all by itself.
To make a micro USB you can either take an existing hub and change the connectors.
Of course since the PCB pattern will not match up you'd have to wire the connectors in discreetly.
If you really wanted to make a real job out of this, buy a hub IC for $3,
lay out a PCB, slap on a 24 MHz crystal and connectors.
???
the idea is to build an mobile hub for tablets or smartphones for plugin external devices like sd card reader or usb stick and
mouse and keybord. hub will stick in a phone and plug in the external devices. i already had tried with a keyboard and mouse with standard usb and it works. i had already build some devices with micro usb connector. so i would like to use all devices at the same time and outdoor. i try to solve the idea without a lot of adapter..
if the usb give all devices 5v and 100mA at the same time, that would be great, without an additional IC power supplier..
thats all
i found out thats not possible to use more than 2 gadgets at the same time cause of the voltage without an external power supplier. keyboard and mice work at the same time but i f u want to plug in a 3rd gadget then wont work. 1 solution could be a mobile battery with 5v connecting with the hub. or make a built in battery in the hub..
@ renate. maybe u have an suggestion?
I have a jig for measuring current consumed by USB peripherals: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30668417&postcount=26
I use USB with only low power things like a keyboard or else
with a powered hub (also back-powering the Android).
The second option is more like a docking station.

The 2 female connectors don't make much sense i think, because:
I can't think of any device you would like to connect with your phone as host that has a µusb connector..? You would need 2 additional OTG-cables in almost all cases
You would need OTG capability for security reasons: Imagine you hub is pluggend in you phone and you connect you computer to the hub too -> Data crash + 2 power sources in parallel -> risk of damage
I would use a normal tiny usb hub and only change the cable
u did not read my post above attentively or?

and the gadget are already automatically OTG. I already thought all about that before!
