Any programs that format Mini SD Cards? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I bought A Sandisk 1GB Mini SD Card off of ebay for $10
-just the the card no card reader, or adaptor of any sort.
I insert it into my wizard, and it fits it with the spring loaded mechnism fine, but when I go to memory managment, im not sure if it knows it's there or not
Memory management will say that, that "external storage": "Not Installed"?
But when I go to take pictures, I go to the utilities/options menu, then general tab, and it doesnt even acknowledge that theres their a card in the slot, only seeing system memory.
So my question is, are their any programs that can/will format my card, or implement something to make it work?
I have Total Commander(not installed), and thinking about downloading this program called "SKTools". Would these programs work.
Cause not only is this a brand new card, but i have pictures and programs that I want to get installed on this device.
-Ive already amazed myself by using the Lockiwiz, to unlock my phone(having only 2-days worth of exp with a smartphone device)
-taken a few pictures, which i have to downloading off my wizard through activesync
-An some other freeware programs that want to install themselves on the system memory
Please help, all/ and any post greatly appreciated
Thanks!
EDIT: I downloaded SKTools onto my device, and its a cool program( I think its a alternate version of total commander but you pay for it?), but it doesnt recognize my Mini SD card either!!
-I also found this program called "WM5Storage", in the description it say that it's specialty is dealing with "external storage", downloading/ and uploading without the need of activesync?

I used Paragon Partition Manager to partition my minisdhc

panasonic
SDFormatter
the setup maybe you find in www
here is the program-folder,
just extract to c:\programs\
or use a CANON DIGITAL IXUS 65 or else DigiCam

How do I save to sd card

My XDA2 now has a Sandisk 512MB card.
I also have Journal Bar, SPB pocket plus, Lextionary, Pocket Atlas, Pocket Stars, Currency Convertor X, a few games, (and a few others which I ran out of memory).
What I want to know is how exactly do I get the programmes to run from the sd card, so that the XDA2 memory isn't used to store them.
I have tried x-backup, and I have tried cutting the files using file explorer to the sd card, but then the programmes do not run from the start menu.
I'm sure it's something simple but please let me in on it!
So near, and yet so far!
well when you install programs using activesync you can choose between
if you want to install it in main mem or storage
some programs dont work though if you install them to the storage
if you dont want to install the programs again you may be able to edit the shortcut and pointing the path to the new location and some programs may also require some regediting for them to work after being moved
if you dont want to edit the shortcuts then you can just make new ones
whats under programs is just which shortcuts that are located in windows\programs
Thanks for the help.. made sure I said no to installing in default directory.. now to see if each programme works.. Thanks for the help!
Similar position
Hi Gumby I'm in a similar position to you in that I just got a 512Mb SD today and I intend to rebuils my system with appropriate applications on the SD. Have you found out yet which work from the SD and which only work from ROM?
It would be halpful for everyone if we could get a list of what should go where.

S.O.S. Memory management on Jam...

Hi all!
I'm Markino from Italy and I've got some question about I-Mate Jam.
I don't undertand the memory management of this device: how the RAM-ROM and MMC are used by the Windows Mobile 2003 SE? If I install an application, where the files are stored? If the battery drops down what I'll lose?
Many thanks and sorry for my bad English!
Marco
Marco, in theory you should let Windows to manage your memory. The i-mate JAM has 64MB of ROM and 64MB of RAM. The ROM is mostly occupied with OS and other 3rd party software that installs automatically when you hard reset the phone. Part of this ROM is also used when using the "Permanent Storage" feature of the OS, where it lets you save some files, contacts, etc.
What should really interest you is the RAM. The OS uses this RAM for running programs (like the RAM on your PC) and the rest is used for storage. If you go to Start -> Settings -> Memory, the OS will tell you how much of your RAM is being used for Running Programs and how much is used for Storage.
The safest place for your data would be an SD Card, as anything stored on the SD card will stay in tact after a hard reset.
Thanks kta! You're great!
Well.. in your opinion what is the best way to use the Jam's RAM with a 512MB SD installed?
I can configure the device to use all the RAM space to run program and store all the file and app. in the SD or it's better to use a part of RAM to some particoular application?
The SD Ultra II are really faster in the Jam?
The more free RAM you have the faster your mobile works. I would suggest installing most of your programs on the storage card. Before installing a program make sure that it can run smoothly on an SD card. Most programs do work well when installed on the storage card so it shouldn never be a problem.
Having said that, RAM is MUCH faster than an SD card, although modern SD cards like the UltraII give over 9MB per second (66x) write speed.
A more complex option (the one I'm using) is to install a hacked ROM (aka Big Storage ROM) where you will be able to gain an extra 27MB of Storage (i.e. in RAM). You can then use this storage space for installing programs and these should work slightly faster than when installed on an SD card. However, installing the hacked ROM requires some experience with ROMS and would not suggest you go for it unless you want to end up with your JAM stuck in bootloader mode
With regards to SD cards, the faster the speed (i.e. 40x, 66x, 133x) the better.
And if you intend to use your JAM as an MP3 player I would suggest going for a 1GB or 2GB SD card. The price difference usually justifies the extra space! Before buying a 2GB card, check these forums for compatibility issues as some of them did not work on the JAM.
Hope I didn't confuse you more!
SD card speed on the JAM makes no difference for operating the device, since the JAM can only read/write the SD card at the standard speed - buying a faster card makes no difference.
A faster card is useful if you frequently copy large files between your SD card and your PC, but for the JAM it makes no difference.

mini-SDHC Issue......bad news

Ok, this is quite a bad news, i put my new Transcend 4GB miniSDHC card in my Athena, it shows up in the memory setting. You can put file and read file ok. But here is the problem, when you install the programs on miniSD, it install ok, but after you try to read it from start menu, it says either some file is missing or the program is not digitally signed!
It's not just one program, all my program which install on miniSD doesn't work, if you use file explorer to click the program, it works.....but not through start menu.
Anyone knows what's going on? I am now going to reinstall all these program in Micro Drive, not sure if that's going to cause slow reading speed or more power drain, but it's the only option now for me.

yes i have try that, it works for the first time, after soft restart, all not working again.......such a waste for this miniSDHC, anyway, i have install all my extra program on micro drive, my first impression is it runs faster than miniSDHC for some reason, will do benchmark on these a bit later

if you install in Micro Drive, battery will be empty sooner
why you don't install on device memory?
Do you try another memory on it?

i am not sure how bad the battery will be if i use micro drive, but do you really think install on mini-SD is faster than micro drive?
NO!!, micro drive is much much faster, i have run the benchmark on these two, the micro drive is running at least 5 times faster than my high speed miniSD, and the index score of micro drive is way higher than the fastest file index device in the world (dell dx something). The micro drive also use FAT32 format.
So i guess i will keep my program there for now and see how the battery goes
i did the installation into storage card(transcend 4G mini SDHC)...
and then run the program from program files...
it works well!

!!!!........really......something strange here. where did you buy yours? is it possible mine one is fake? did you do anything special or just install the normal way?
please say here how much battery work?
before and after use micro driver.
I personally think the problem is of your memory and a say test another memory to see do it work good or no?

i have found the problem and solve it, it's to do with the name of the sd card, change it to "Stroage Card" and everything works great. So still, i don't know how much battery it drain for running programs on Micro drive, since all my programs are back to mini-SD now, but it does feel faster when you install in Micro drive i think

I got the same problem on my Dopod U1000 with TOSHIBA 2GB mini-SD, sometime the memory card is readable but the file structure is broken it case some software can not run after reset the device all resume to normal.
I think it is not only the SDHC problem.

it's not SDHC, it's the name of the SD card, you have to rename it Storage Card, otherwise software won't work
I have always retained the original name for my SD card (Storage Card), but on three occasions so far, the file structure and name were garbed when viewed with file explorer, or were simply missing. In one instance, I was editing an excel spreadsheet and suddenly found that I could not save it. I was forced to first save into the device, reset the device, then transfer the spreadsheet back to the storage card. I read from other forum that I'm not alone in having to reset to regain the Storage Card data.
Perhaps there is a bug in the ROM, Wu?
I haven't actually installed any programs on my 4 GB mini-SDHC card, but I have no problems running programs on the card. I've created shortcuts to Transport Tycoon, ScummVM and PTGmap and they're all running fine on the card...

Files on mini SD card disappear! Please help!!

The weird problems happened to my Dopod D810 twice.
The first time: The whole file system on card went crazy with all folder names became gibberish (like: &%*()jhui&%^&&!#%&). After a soft reset many folders disappeared, a few folders remained but became duplicated but many files inside were not readable (e.g there are two identical folders named My ebooks).
I thought it might be card-related and I hard reset, formated the card, and re-installed all softwares.
Today it happened again but differently:
- I had some video files in Storage card\My Documents\My Videos folder like this ... video_28.mp4, video_29.mp4, video_30.mp4
- After a video shot, I opened Resco Explorer to check and to replay but all folders and files previously in Storage card\My Documents disappeared. Other folders and programs on the card were still intact and ran fine
- I tried shooting another few video clips (with option saving to card, of course). They all disappeared after shooting.
- But the weird thing is: After shooting, I chose the preview option and WMP played the file well. I paused the playing, check the properties of the now playing file and it showed clearly: Storage card\My Documents\My videos\Video_33.mp4
But in File Explorer and Resco explorer the Storage card\My Documents is absolutely empty despite the file IS BEING PLAYED in WMP
- I tried again and again, the video clips preview were always named in sequence like video_34.mp4 then video_35.mp4, .... but they all mysteriously disappeared.
What is wrong? Has anyone experienced the same problem? Is that a hardware failure (writing-to-card)? Should I send in for repair? Please help! I have some important clips that I really want to keep. Is there any way, any tool to help recover the files that are probably still there?
Do you have another miniSD to run some tests?
This could give you an idea of what is going wrong?
The miniSD could be malfunctioning.
Regards!
Apparently, you are a new user here...
The Trinity has a hardware problem that HTC can't still fix by now. Go search for some posts. There is currently NO solution available - you may try cards with smaller capacity, or you do some preventive measures, such as install SD Sentry.
I have found that rebooting without the card in and then putting it back in sorts this out. Also I am attaching fixes from HTC and others which stop minimise this happening. Finally, it is suggested you use the Sandisk MiniSD Ultra II cards instead as they have a faster transfer rate. These are available on Amazon for about 15 UK pounds.
Hawk
Damn it! They're gone
Thanks for all the suggestion.
I did reboot without the card then reinserted it but didn't help.
The card is Kingston 2GB
@Nighthawk2050: what does the first patch do? the second patch seem to be for another set, not Trinity?
@WW2250: what does SD Sentry do?
I bought a Transcend card reader, but could not recover any video files.
The card reader however showed the My Videos folder containing only one last video clip.
It also showed 4 other folders which report error when clicked on

There are also 2 other files
/p300p1..gif (two dots) with a reported size of 1,838,093 KB
i/p320p1..gi with a reported size of 789,709 KB
I think with a faulty product like this, I have the right to return it (to Three Australia - a 3G provider)
I think they only have one other 3G set which is the Dopod 838 Pro
Please advise if the 838 Pro has any similar problem (or other potential problems)?

First patch (miniSD HC Patch.cab) don't work....download the new one from the official thread (anyways, it work only on LVSW's ROM v2.0.1.1 and on AX3L's ROM anyversion) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1341004#post1341004
Second patch (ArtemisSDEnhancement.CAB) is only for ARTEMIS, not Trinity
Try Panasonic SD formater for format your SD card.

Borut
The first patch might not be working for WM5, since it was originally extracted from Hermes WM6 ROM. But you mileage may vary.
SD Sentry is a program written by a Spb developer, who had exactly the same problems of you (for his Artemis though). At that time, there was no fix available from HTC. So he wrote that little program to check constantly for indications of SD card corruptions, such as missing files or folders, screwed up file and folder names, etc.
If such indications are found, it offers you a warning and an option to reboot such that you won't be doing further damages to your card writing to it in an already corrupted state. If you reboot in time, you can yourself a day before it wreaks havoc.
For details, you may want to visit his page at http://www.nixie.narod.ru/sdsentry/index-en.htm
BTW, there was an official fix from HTC for Artemis, but none is released for your precious Trinity, AFAIK.

Don't know for sure for 838 Pro - but it seems to me that this problem is a special free feature from HTC for newer devices like Artemis and Trinity. Besides this issue, I think it's not worth to go back to 838 Pro since it's an older device, slower, and has different sets of problems by itself.
I read extensive from the Artemis forum - and from there I learn that they have a worthy workaround that you may want to try: Don't ever press the power button - let the power save timeout take care of shutting down the machine when not in use.
Their theory is that there's a problem with the HW/OS that interact with the SD card whenever there's a power event, probably lies in the cache or the controller, creating corrupted filesystem data, when unfortunately being actually flushed to your card, would actually inflict real damage. So, if you get strange card suddenly disappear errors, strange filename folders, etc... you'd better reboot it immediately.
Removing the card and re-inserting it seems to reinitialize the driver and will probably revive your card too, but I'd say reboot it is your best bet.
Looks like you now need some software recovering tools to savage your files from your already damaged card. Grab as many as you can recover, re-format the card, and install SD Sentry.
I thought Dopod 838 Pro (Hermes 100) is more or less the same as a Trinity with a keyboard and without GPS?
Anyway, maybe I have to stick with this Trinity for now.
About SD Sentry: another program, would it further slow down the phone?

It's incredibly light-weight. I even forgot its existence once installed and configured. It never get into your way unless absolutely necessary - when your card get corrupted
Hope it helps.
Hmm maybe its only my trinity but I observed everytime all the SD data is lost is when I use the internet explorer to download and install something onto the ppc.I've done downloading Flash player 7 from my ppc internet explorer and after a soft reset the sd data is also lost.tell me if I am wrong pls.maybe we can avoid it by not using the ppc i.e. to download stuff and intsall it
if you can reproduce it every time exactly, then it's good. Record the exact procedure and tell HTC about it. I read the guys at artemis forum did that and get a fix from HTC.
I want to do that but I just couldn't reproduce it.
Hello,
same pb with me. Pretty anoying...
I saw that i'm sharing this pb with several people. but doing a wide search on google doesn't give the impression that every body has this pb.
Is it a hardware pb, should I take in back for repair.
Does a WM6 upgrade would solve it ?
thanks for your help.
It's indeed annoying especially when you got nothing left in the card. I don't know about the scope of your search in google - but it's a pretty big problem here in this forum - definitely not limited to Trinity or Artemis.
I am sure not everyone encounter this problem - since it's quite related to write i/o activities to the card. Playing music with media player count as one - since it updates (read: writes) the DRM files in the card automatically whenever it is running; people who use camera reported corruption; and the original poster who downloads and installs cabs on the card.
It's definitely a hardware + software problem, which might be able to get fixed by a software driver patch, but only after HTC has identified the root cause of the problem. That's why I asked s4cr3d to report the bug to HTC if he has a recipe to reproduce the bug step by step.
Take it back for repair? Forget it. WM6 doesn't seem to resolve it as well. I read someone with WM6 (cooked) still have this problem. Don't know about the official rom.... yet.
thanks for your answer. need to wait then... still great device...
I'm using AX3L's ROM v2.0.8 and I must say the SD problem affects WM6 cooked ROMs too. It seems to me that it has something to do with software/hardware incompatibilities.
The specs are as follows:
- Corsair 2GB MiniSD
- AX3L v2.0.8
- AX3L ExtROM v2.0.5
The problem started when I used Resco Explorer's built-in unzip tool to unzip a file onto the Storage Card. Everything went ok until I opened up "Storage Card" and went, "where's the My Documents folder?". In a spectacular twist, I managed to corrupt the card (thru formatting, re-formatting again and again) and now it's dead. I used Panasonic SD Formatter, formatting in Linux, etc. and they weren't much help. My word of advice is to store everything safe in your computer the moment you see disappearing files because it might just go downhill from there.
I strongly believe it is Resco Explorer but I cannot verify this cos' I don't wanna screw up more cards.
I have since bought a Sandisk 1GB card and reflashed AX3L v2.0.8 without the ExtROM (and so, no Resco Explorer). It might be the card, it might be Resco Explorer but I have had no problems since (it's been 10 days now).
Anyway, hope this helps someone in some way. Will definitely try the SDSentry program just to be absolutely safe. These cards don't come cheap over here..

Question about the SD Card and Programs?

Hi,
Its been a while since I had a Windows Mobile phone (MDA Vario 2!) and I just had a quick question about the SD card for the Touch HD. I am very interested in this phone and want to know if you can for instance store your contacts on the SD Card? I assume any extra programs you get would have to go on the SD card due to there not being alot of space on the phone?
Thanks.
You can save your contacts to the SIM card, put it in the Blacktone and add them across, but you may need a third-party application to put them on a memory card.
As for programs, you're given a choice where you want to save them. Somepeople hotswap memorycards, so need the programs on the phone. In my experience though, 300mb is plenty of space for programs, so lobng as pictures are stored to a memorycard.
