Performance Issues - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

I have a Nike in the US and do not get as good of reception as my Touch. I am assuming it is due to the triband of the Nike and quad band of Dual. I spoke with friend at the factory and they heard of similar performance issues. Has anyone in US experienced this. My touch has excellent performance.

in the US as well. experienced the same problem. Last weekend, was in the movie theater with my gf. She owns the iphone. Her reception was full bar while my dual touch (nike) only had 2 bar.
as far as im aware of, both nike (dual touch) and elf (touch) are tri-band. says so on the htc site as well.
http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch.htm

more bars in more places
Have an EU version in US with ATT. No real issues with reception. Seems to work fine.... So far. had an HTC 2125 (quad band) before and the Niki gets about the same reception. I see no real difference.

Actually I noticed also bad reception compared to my i-Mate Jamin and Dopod S300.. Here's my conclusion: If i'm connected to 3G reception is often poor.. if connected to GPRS it's ok. for now I have set my connection type to GSM, works for me as 'm not using 3G.
I guess the 3G network is not as good as GSM.. sounds reasonable to me
Can anyone confirm my conclusion?

How do you set the connection type to GSM only.

Start -> Settings -> Phone
On the 4th tab (band) you can select your network type:
Select GSM for Network type..

Thanks, I found it while playing although it did not help the issue. My touch has 4 bars in the office while the dual is non existant to 2 and drops quite often. I will check with the factory to see if they will have a new RF ROM at some point to correct or if this is an antenna design issue. Really like the phone but can't use due to performance instability.

Signal Problems

Hi
Just received my Touch Dual yesterday and the signal strength generally seems a lot poorer than my SPV C600, In fact driving down the motorway last night the phone cut off about 5 times, my old phone never did this, is it because of the 3G ? or do you think it could be a duff phone ???
Thanks in Advance
Rich
Try the same route disabling the 3g...
I've seen that in general the signal is much better than my Wizard, also when I'm out of range the Dual it's really fast in joining again the GSM network...

After the elevetor the signal go up in 2 / 3 seconds.

Anyone in USA really concerned about losing 3G?

Like many of us I've been salivating at the prospect of the HD's large screen and, having decided that as good as my Touch Pro keyboard is, I don't use it enough to hold out for an HD with a keyboard (if there is even one in the roadmap). But..... I'm still smarting at not having 3G on my Touch Pro (and I know our XDA-Developers team may yet lick that limitation) so I'm seriously questioning whether I should go for the HD knowing it may never have 3G capability in the USA. Anyone else share this concern?
My need for 3G is about 10% of its total use...and my Edge network isn't exactly a snails pace. My Raphael is the best phone I've ever had, and I truly enjoy the ability to customize it. I am jumping ship and getting the HD without second thought. If the Elite team cracks the 3G...that's just the icing on the perfect raphael cake I have.

yeah, ummm, no 3G coverage here, don't care, lol. your 10%, well I am about 1%, just when I travel and can't hardly tell a difference anyway. Two things: Either the HTC rep that gave us bad news about the arrival of Blackstone in US is not telling the truth or doesn't know the truth to tell it. OR..... HTC really has the wrong idea about consumers in the US. Surely they realize that we want the device because of the many other improvements that it brings. The improvements in performance and the killer screen does it for me. I have owned PDA phone after PDA phone starting with the old Verizon xv6600, which by the way has a large screen compared to kaiser and many others and I know a breakthrough when I see one. If they really don't plan to release this device, then they had better be working on a 3G version with or without a sliding keyboard that runs windows mobile 7. If their really going to skip around generations and stuff, that wm7 device better arrive on time and on par with the iPhone in refinement and usability. They should make a device that people don't really need to cook ROMs to be satisfied with. Do it right the first time, don't take backwards steps, don't take baby steps either. Turn one foot directly in front of the other, in full force and confidence; the smart way. I want it now!

I go all over the USA daily while driving my truck, and I've noticed that I get the big [H] in every 3G area I come to, so 3G is very important for me, but I'm still going to retire my Polaris when the HD comes out. I'll just hope and pray daily that someone figures out how to give us 3G...
Doesnt matter to me.

We finally got 3G here when I live in Millsboro Delaware. After installing Solace I to get the Big H now. I was either dumb or confussed. LOL However after the good people on here explained that H is better then 3G I was delighted. Not sure why. Called ATT said it was a little better, well faster and was fine for me to use with my unlimited plan.
Solace 1.5 is so smooth I just can't believe that I'd think of getting or replacing my Tilt. I think I finally found the phone for me.
Beachboyde/Jon
I switched from the Tytn 2 over to the Diamond not too long ago. I gave up 3G for slimmer form factor. I barely notice the difference. Maybe occasionally when I use YouTube or Opera, I wish I had a faster connection, but my day to day use of corporate push email is unaffected.
I would like to see the XDA pros open up 3G on these phones, but I feel the features are worth living with EDGE.
...but then again, I've been tempted to pick up a Slingbox lately too. Not sure I'd trust Slingplayer running on E.

So does that mean I'm no longer the stalker...but now you are?
T-mobile USA has 1700 Mhz and 2100 MHz frequencies for 3G support.
This is what I got from their website
--------------------------------------------------------------------
What frequency does your 3G network support?
Our 3G network supports both the 1700MHz and 2100MHz frequencies.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So... I'll try 3G there once I get mine....
3G or no 3G
I have a Touch Diamond with no 3G (edge only) and one with 3G. (the big H) .
To me, not a big enough difference to worry about. The Edge connection is actually fast enough for me. May a half sec. difference in connection to web pages. Im getting the Touch HD. Besides most of the time I'm on wifi anyway. No big deal
So what exactly determines if we can get 3G in the US? Is it the radio? I have never quite understood this part.

Not determined yet. The Elite team in the Raphael ROM forum does admit there is different hardware. They have connected to the US 3G, but don't think it is stable. They haven't finalized their research as of yet, but sure some more information will be coming shortly.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=420586
ok so it is hardware inside the phone that differs between US and EU 3G?
So if the bands on the specs page of the phone list US bands then it should be good to go?
Not trying to hyjack the thread I am just curious.
i will be getting an HD and droppign the touch pro... i think

As far sas i heard. its the onboard chip that does the differents. HTC said that on some of the old phones, where it got hacked and worked with 3G, hardware was there but not activated. thats why the people here could get it to work. But HTC stated that this is not the case in the HD. THey said that the HD can not be hacked to work with 3G, as it is not possible hardware wise for the HD to recieve 3g signals on the USA network
i believe i said this already once but its more of a matter of just the antennas and if they can recieve the usa 3g bands or not. the actual chipset i know can use the bands its a matter or just enabling them.
I thought the 3g put a 3g icon not the big h? Thats how it shows on my friends tilt. Me i have not had 3g ever since i have used at&t lol cause i had the wizard and now the wing. Does 3g affect call performance or just data, if so i could care less about 3g then. Although i would rather no pay the premium price on the hd buying from europe
AT&T has HSUPA but you have to activate it in the settings.

Who will pay???!!!

I'm so ****ing tired of this now. Who will pay for all my extra costs with drooped calls because of the bad reception. arghhh!!! This is so ****ing frustrating.
You should flash your mobile too...

All i know is that my Xperia's reception is awesome! Even better than my iPhone's. No harm in giving it a shot - worst case, doesn't work... best case, you get the perfect phone!
ok, all I know is that that is the number one thing many X1 owners is talking about. It is already well known. If you compare it to the iPhone 3G i can understand that it is better but in other cases. I don't think so.

Well... i was comparing it to the iPhone 'cos it is what i have other than the Xperia. But i can definitly say with 100% certainty that my Xperia's performance is awesome! Better than my cousin's HTC Touch Diamond, and my friend's Nokia... (Xperia is most definitely the best windows mobile device out there that goes head on with all other devices)
Of course it is the best phone on the market, no doubt. But the reception is giving me dropped calls and that is not ok for me in a big city.
The only reception problems I have are thanks to poor O2 reception in my house. Its no different to any other phone though from what I can tell.
I tested a T-Mobile SIM in my X1 and it was much better. So it might not be the X1 at fault, could be the network.
maybe your x1 is faulty... I don't have any reception problems, comparing with my previous phone (se w910) reception is the same...
both have "less bars" than my "previous-previous" phone but thats because that was runing in 3g mode and w910 and x1 stay all day in hsdpa mode.
Well, my provider have bad reception in my appartment. But my crappy Nokia N81 didn't have any problem with that. The thing with Three, that is my operator, is that they don't have GSM when the 3G reception is bad. The strange thing is that when I'm at the countryside where my parets lives I have full HDSPA reception. Maby the x1 dosen't have bad reception but it is not working so well with only 2 bars of reception.

Could be... but i went to a wedding 2 hours from Lahore, and i got very little signal strength there. It even dropped to 1 bar at times... but regardless of the weak signal, i didn't face any call drops other than once when the signal completely tanked.
Talking about reception... when i got my iPhone, my old Mobilink number gave me tons of trouble. Not only call drops but also constant charges for Edge/GPRS which i wasn't even using most of the time. When i switched the network to Warid, no more problems.
Who knows what could be the problem. My advice is to try flashing the software... there is a chance that this problem is due to a software fault or something.
maybe we all have a difference case since most of us use a different network in different country... but just comparing the phone itself with other phones... mine always has the best signal among them no matter what phone you are comparing it to

I recived a PM from emwdava that told me that i had the same problem with three. He is now using Tele2 and that seems to work much better. So maybe the problem lies there. Anyway. I'm stuck with them until the middle of 2010 because of the N81 mentioned before.
Don't know if i should flash with 2.1 of one well known ROM or wait for an update from SE.

Your guess would be as good as mine.
Three might be the problem here... but there's also a chance - in my opinion - that it might be resolved/improved on refreshing the mobile firmware.
Good luck to you!
I think that the problem is your provider!
Watch my case. I have two diferent providers, one is vodafone the other is optimus and im from portugal.
as much optimus as vodafone declares that in my zone I have 100% of covering

If I dont have the two diferent providers and so have the optimus I will tell you that the problem is the xperia.
sory for my bad english.

Switching from H to 3G is good... you're getting great speeds then. I can only get edge inside my house. It's not the HD2 that the problem... it's t-mobiles coverage. the 1700mhz band does not go through walls or barriers nearly as well as at&ts 850mhz band.
I've been email HTC about my issues with my phone and the only thing they really say is to remove any 3rd party application and soft reset.. And they also say to contact T-mobile with any further issues.. Like they know how to fix it?

That is true about the 1700 Mhz, but AT&T 3G is mostly 1900Mhz and 850Mhz in very few places so I would expect them to have the same issue but they don't. I think T-Mobile may have the tower spread apart farther than ATT. But who knows.
calling tmobile is useless I tried that 3 times already and I only get excuses like the tower its down or im in a weird area so im just confused I know the network suck s but not this bad.

Only idiot thinks it is related SIM.
TMO CSRs are famous dumbs!
My HTC Dream gets better reception than the HTC HD2 in areas of weak reception (1-3bars). The HTC Dream got a radio update a month ago that helped it improve reception. I'm hoping for a similar radio update to the HD2.
I don't care too much about poor reception, as long as it can maintain the 1-2bars and not drop the call. The HTC Dream is better than the HD2 at maintaining a weak reception. I get full bars and 3G outside, while indoors in my 'fortress' I only get 1-2 bars.
I called and told them about the bad reception on the HD2 (compared to the HTC Dream. I was to try to manually set the network to check. I wasn't at the same location so I couldn't try during the call. I tried later and the reception didn't seem to improve. I'll be calling back and seeing if a request/problem report could be submitted for their techs.

Same issue here. Edge in the house. As soon as I go outside, I'm on 3G/H.

Question for ATT users

I currently have the the G2 on the T-mobile network. I frequently switch back and forth between 3G and Edge which is driving me nuts. Is this a phone issue or a network issue? Do people with the Desire Z on the ATT network have the same issue?
Its a network issue with your location, It happens on any phone including the iPhone. Its if the carrier has that service available where you are.
I am located in Minneapolis which supposedly has very good T-mobile 3G coverage. A friend of mine who has a G1 on T-mobile here in Minneapolis always sees solid 3G. This makes me wonder whether this is a phone issue. Flashing the 17 radio did improve reception, but not satisfactorily. Could any ATT users share their experience?
I mean, the phone and radio and rom will play a factor somewhat in it but not that much. To be fair, edge and 3G dont have too much a difference in speed or at least not here in Florida, but i run 4G almost everywhere anyways.

For the MOST part, this is a network issue. The phone Radio will have an impact on the quality of cell signal you get but the network carries the most weight. Not all phones are created equal as far as reception goes. My DZ is average. Its not great like my previous BB Bold was but doesn't drop calls like my gf's phone.
I do on occasion drop from 3G to Edge but only when I'm in rural areas. I work in a jail on occasion and of course the concrete walls aren't great for cell signal. I usually switch from 3G to Edge when I'm there because Edge just holds the signal better rather than the phone killing itself trying to find a solid 3G signal.
Also, like the other user mentioned, 3G and Edge aren't night and day per-say. For example, sometimes Edge can be FASTER depending on how much traffic is on the network at that time. I experienced this on a day trip to San Francisco. With 3 gazillion Iphones in the city, I couldn't get my phone to connect to anything with 3G. When I switched to Edge, it was moving steady no problem...
Just my 2 cents.
Is Negri Electronics still the cheapest place to buy the Desire Z NAM or are there other sites with better offers? I checked ebay and all the phones there are more expensive when you calculate in shipping.
Possible Fix
Here is one thing that may fix the problem, as it has for me. Set your phone to WCDMA only by dialing *#*#4636#*#* . A menu will then appear. Select Phone Information. Change Set Preferred Network Type to WCDMA Only.
Hope this helps!

I feel very sorry for you then. EDGE makes me want to claw my eyes out versus 3G. Everywhere in New England on AT&T, the difference in speed between EDGE and 3G is like the difference between throwing a bullet and shooting it. Even more so with the "4G" HSPA+ backhaul recently done by AT&T in many areas. But even before that, it was a big difference.
My Desire Z very seldom switches from 3G to EDGE. When it does, its in areas of very weak 3G coverage. As others have mentioned, its likely a network issue. Flashing a new radio is pretty easy (and you can always flash back to stock), so it may be worth a try. But it may or may not have any significant impact.
