Zumobi - new browser beta available - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Zumobi lets you access and share web-based content on your mobile phone in an innovative, new way. It’s totally free and our Beta is ready for you to download now!
This is available at http://www.zumobi.com
However, there is no direct cab available for download. Instead they send you the download link to your mobile number. Being in India, my 12 digit mobile number (with country code) doesn't fit in their input field.
Could someone please post the cab file here after download.

Here ya go: http://rapidshare.com/files/76581523/ZumobiPocketPC.cab
It doesn't seem to play well with Kaiser though!
I take that back. NOTE***** DO NOT USE WITH KAISER. SCREWED UP MY START MENU ROYALY!!!! CANNOT ACCESS PROGRAMS PERIOD!

What is it exactly?? A full browser or limited to specific sites/content??
Any first impressions?

It's very limited. It's basically like an interactive RSS feed. You have to download individual modules for content. It's very slow & the content is seriously limited.
This totally screwed my start menu & I couldn't access the settings or programs menu. The site said it doesn't yet support the tilt & I read simillar problems with the MSM7200 version of the touch. My impression is that it's a seriously slow bit of eye candy with unnecesary content. If you load it up with contrent it runs at about 4megs. Alot for a crippled fancy RSS.

Thanks for the info... I think I'll pass this one

Wow, I installed this application and as soon as I opened it I was greeted by my first ever crash and reboot. I have the Sprint Touch, and up until now it hasn't even frozen once. NO GOOD

Opera is pretty good and I wouldn't really mind paying $24 :/.

Opera has always been software you have to pay for. They've just been putting out alot of new versions with free trials recently.

Yeah, I noticed it today. My workaround is to set 31.05 before you start Opera(beta)

actually i think opera mini is the fastest browser i have used yet...i have them all...maybe it's because opera mini separates a whole page into several pages...
Sorry double post.
Opera Mini uses a proxy server that massivly compresses the data and photo's, as well as reformating and cutting down the stuff it thinks you wont need. Really it's for small screen mobiles.
Opera Mobile is a 'proper' browser', slower but a much richer experience. I recommend people have both.
Well I wouldn't mind paying the $25 if there weren't so many crappy bugs that weren't fixed.
I would list them but someone on another forum did the work. To quote:
"My what a huge disappointment ! What's the point of putting out Betas if they only correct half the bugs ?
I have an X50v running WM2003SE. I'm running it in hi-res VGA mode.
I've just downloaded the latest demo, and after a mere 20mins of playing here's what I've found so far:
Pros
The Courier fonts have gone.
Zoom now works properly.
Double space problem gone on keyboard.
Keyboard comes up correctly in context now.
Javascript (edited - previously read Java) pages seem to work fine.
Cons
The progress bar still covers the horizontal scroll bar.
I find the progress bar annoying, and can't see a means to turn it off.
My D-Pad won't scroll me vertically in the same manner as PIE. Instead, it operates as per the Betas and tabs you between various screen elements.
The highlight problem is still there i.e. links won't work if you've accidentally managed to highlight another link. So you have to click a blank bit of screen to de-select, then hit the link.
Flash still doesn't work.
On long pages, the information stays all corrupted at the end.
Frustrated is just not the word. This was all looking so promising. Why ignore half the bad stuff after all this time ?????????"
I can confirm this is all true.
If they could just program it so us users can configure how WE want the d-pad to scroll between selectable items and the page then I'd be happy.
The team that put together Opera Mini (the Java Midlet version) are clever enough to assign up/down for link selection and left/right for page scrolling so why can't the Opera "Larger" team give us at least that if they're not going to give us full configurability? If anyone wants to bring up the horizontal scrolling argument, don't. I always use either "Fit to screen" or "One column" mode anyway
so it doesnt support flash? not good
how does this compare to the latest Minimo?

Minimo is more like bloat-a-mo. Opera is much more refined.
Who really needs flash on a mobile device anyways?
Anyone else finding that 8.6 is much slower that the last version (beta) to load up?

This is the first version I have used so I can't compare, but it does take a long time in general to load up. I have added opera.exe to my exceptions list to not close when I click the close button so it is always running once loaded the first time. This works well for me.

On a separate note: Put Opera cache files on Storage Card...
1) Close Opera.
2) Create a folder on your storage card where the cache files will go.* I chose \Storage Card\Program Files\Opera\cache4, but I don't think the folder structure or folder name matter.
3) Open \Application Data\Opera\opera.ini in a text editor.
4) In the [User Prefs] section, add the following line -> Cache Directory4=[full path to folder on storage card].
In my case my entry is Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\Program Files\Opera\cache
5) Save and close opera.ini.
6) Restart Opera. Your cache is now being written to your storage card.
Taken from -> http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=140988
i tried setting up the cache to a different folder, but it did not work.
first, as you mentioned, directory name doesnt matter. so i put it in:
\Storage Card\Cache\Opera
then
\Storage Card\Cache\Opera\cache4
then
\Storage Card\Program Files\Opera\cache4
all those folders did not work. the last one i did was to changed it the same as yours, but still didnt work.
im using the latest version (cause the previous one expired on june 1).
disregard my previous post. it worked now.
my fault was, i did not set it up correctly:
Directory4=\Storage Card\Cache\Opera
it should be:
Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\Cache\Opera
thanks for this great tip!

Update: Fixed browser rendering issues.

edit: all the features work fine, but after a while of browsing, it gives a low memory warning.. any way to fix that?

yea memory issues have been reported @ my site, Im currently looking into it. It also will not start a data connection, you have to manually start that yourself also.

wow, i am impressed if the memory problem gets fixed, thanks a lot.
if only there was a smartphone verion i could get. it makes me want to go back to ppc.
It's been working fine for me - I've been using it with several windows open and it hasn't complained yet... I'm using a heavily customised version, but I have to say that it's one of the most beautiful apps I've ever seen (after customising!)...

yea I have ran across the memory issues myself. I just moved my history folder over to the card and change the reg reference and its been working beautifully. I'm sitting in court right now, stealing wifi and browsing with picsel. It's a beautiful app, but it's a shame it doesn't quite conform to Win32 API. Custom text boxes etc, so for some reason it doesn't accept carriage returns (enter key line breaks). But, minor issue.I think the memory issue may due to attempting to download streaming media, which fills all free memory (at least, youtube crashes it). May need to limit assigned memory in registry.Heavily customised: I'm using a plugin I am writing to make it prettier and easier to use... just for my use for now, but it could be very helpful. Multiple windows are supported, but not very useful because you can't pass links between windows. But you can browse in multiple windows, and do lots of other stuff.V

Not just yet. Picsel is one of the most beautiful apps I've seen, but at the same time a little rudimentary in access Working on improving it... will keep you informed.

I have been playing with Picsel and it's a great app.
The other day it suddenly lost the "momentum" when scrolling with the stylus. So if I am dragging the stylus and lift it immediately stops making it harder to get through long pages. Anyone else experienced this? Have a solution?
Mine lost momentum too after first usage. Not missing it though. Didn't investigate how to reenable...

Accurate, updated list of software for Mogul?

So I just got my Mogul, and trying to find software for it is really annoying. no list of programs with screen shots, each program type has about 40 different homebrewed versions, most of the stuff doesn;t have a lonk to download anything, no homepage reference so you don't know if you're downloaded a version 4 versions older than the current, piss poor instructions on howw to actually use it, etc.
Is there an actual list of software links, that is updated with the most recent verion, of sotware for this phone? For example, I'm interested in adding that "Cube" menuing system, and doing a Google search returns 50 different versions of 20 different pieces of software linking to pages with older versions of the software that doesn't even work.
Is there a commonly accepted "best" cube type mening system out there? how about a commonly accepted "best" iPhone like interface?

Um, there are literally THOUSANDS of programs that work on the Titan. It doesnt take a lot of work searching to find programs that are awesome. Try using the search feature of this website or ppcgeeks to find what you need instead of asking someone to deliver it to you.
Searching is your best answer. Making a list of the most currnet builds out there (some of which the most current isn't the "best") of software out there would be obselete in a months time. I've got the best results with trial and error in finding what works with my setup (hardware, rom and radio).
Thousands? I've downloaded about 20, and TWO work. the rest do NOTHING, due to obscure compatability problems, some random patch being required that no one seems to have, or it just flat out won't work, period. It;s incredibly frustrating.
Most have said it. You need to do your own research and on top of that what's good for you may not be good for someone else. In a way this is the fun part - the searching for the good stuff. Also, I take much advise from the experts on this and other forums.
In any case, you can't *****. The source of this software is coming from thousands of people/companies. Some write something good and just dump it on a server for others to download and offer little to no documentation. BUT... you pay nothing in many cases (can't ***** there). ANd it's almost always "run at your own risk!".
Want something stable, documented, and supported by a company... stay stock (OEM). Wait... my stock software was not stable, not well documented, and hardly supported (Sprint). As a matter of fact an alpha ROM I am running now is much better than the OEM software that the phone came with.
Willing alpha and beta tester,
tsp
Mogul w/ 6.1, 3.16, 3.27, 60711, NexVision Alpha ROM.
YMMV
make sure you are downloading ppc applications and not smartphone ones, and that you are downloading applications for WM6. If the app doesn't work then search the forums to see what other peoples experience is with that program.
while some of the responses here have been a little abrupt, you need to understand that your request is literally impossible. Nobody could possibly compile of a list of all the software that can run on the mogul.
Here are some things to try, though:
Search the forums for "best programs" and such things
Download different windows mobile apps and try them -- I've rarely found any that don't work.
Figure out what functionality you're looking for, and search specifically for that.
At the very least, if you want to post a query such as this one, you need to specify what exactly you're looking for. Our friend above wasn't exagerating when he said that there are thousands of apps that run on the mogul. If you're new to windows mobile, it'll take some getting used to. Be patient and read a lot. you'll figure it out.
Most people on this board are happy to help you with problems, but they do expect that you exert some energy on your own. If they feel like you haven't, they get touchy.
This thread might become a little more useful for you if you were to say what you are looking for (for example, if you're looking for a good program for maps and such that uses a data connection, I recommend Google Maps (visit http://m.google.com from your mobile phone)
Hope this helps, and good luck!
id say VITO SMS CHAT v1.0.1 is almost a must have if u text alot and have a stock ROM...most the custom ROMS have some form of threaded SMS added for u...but stock ROMS dont and this is a very nice program...i dont use this site much, but im on ppcgeeks 24/7 and i know we have a thread about it there...
also if ur looking for a nice web browser check out netfront browser 3.5 is pretty quick and it loads full websites not just the mobile version...and if u use myspace it actually loads the persons page background...its in beta now till may 31st, but if u search hard enough u can find ANY ppc program for free
I tried searching for a while now. After a failed ROM update I lost all my apps so I am re-customizing everything. How do you change the Title on the Home page? Right now it says: 'TELUS' but that's a little tacky. Can someone guide me to the right post?
Titan Apps
I have quite a few apps that I have been collecting would be happy to contribute to the list let me know...also in the development and hacking section there is a huge list of HTC apps that are pretty much always a go on the Titan.

i'm a noob as well but i read a bunch.thing is there are terms and titles that make reading these threads as bad as reading the bible at times.i tried a bunch of stuff since i had my mogul.i removed a bunch of stuff as well.but right now i use spb mobile shell, pocket plus, fun contact,s2play,s2u2,weather panel<-------- wich is cool as hell but takes a bunch of tweaking imo to get to run right.(still haven't got my radar images right)gpstoday, thumbcal, and a bunch of games.i'm not an expert by far but i know these apps work fine on my device.
this is pretty confusing but this is the index i use to keep track of all the apps that both work and are user-friendly(to an extent).
its kind of hard to understand of you havent written it but what ever

By the way, the cube isn't all its made out to be. TouchFLO is worth it, but I find myself constantly bringing up the cube on accident, not to mention that its stays in the background after launching. (eating up 8-9% of memory) It's nice to play with, and its great for showing off the capabilities of the phone but in the end, for me, it just wasn't worth it.
Then again, to each their own. Truly, TRY programs out. People like different things so you can't always trust a stranger to give you accurate advice.
I was once a "noob," having switched from Palm to come over to the "dark side" (remind me of the Mac vs PC thing). I have the VZW XV6800 with DCD's 2.3.2 rom onboard. I have thrashed and trashed my poor PPC many times before getting it stable the way I want. I have the following recommendations to all "noobs" who want to see "what works and what doesn't."
1) Don't fear the hard reset. If things go completely screwy, simply start from scratch. I store all my cab files on the card for this purpose. BTW, I have never needed to call Verizon after a hard reset. I simply *228 to program the SPL and "everyting is irie mon."
2) Make every effort to find the answer yourself before posting a question anywhere. You are likely not the first person to have whatever problem you think you have. To coin a phrase, "the truth is out there." If you don't have the time to search for the answer, you probably shouldn't be putsing (a technical term) with your phone. Check here and over at PPCGeeks.
3) Figure out which base application you cannot live without. ake sure that each works with the other by soft resetting after each install and working the phone a bit before loading another. My base for instance is: SPB Mobile Shell 2; PhoneWeaver; WisBar Advance; Live Search; Google Maps; Opera Mini 4; Resco Backup; Resco file Explorer; and SK Tools. I know they work well, and work together. I always load these first after a hard reset.
4) Get a good backup program (Sprite, SPB Backup, Resco), and use it daily or at least before each new testing round.
5) Backup your registry and save the backup in a safe place (card) in case.
6) Test new applications one at a time, with soft reset after each installation. Do not load another new app, until you are sure that you're happy with the previoous one or have fully uninstalled it.
7) Have fun! Be happy! Don't forget that it's just a damned phone with benefits.
those are some nice tips for someone who is new jgilfor. do you mind if i quoted you in my sig or something? (pm me)
warez i use
After going through this thread, i decided to add the apps i run to my sig. When i get home i'll add some more.
I don't know if it's a good idea or not but maybe i could throw up a page with links to the software? Unless i can upload them all here.
What do you vets think?
It's probably a better request to ask for the programs that each person uses. That's more useful than trying to get a list of every single program out there. With a program name and some patience, then you should be able to find the right install file. If not, then this phone was probably not meant for you, sorry. =( Maybe a Nokia? lol, j/k!
Anyways, I like GhettoBSD's idea! I keep a list of programs that I use so that I know what to reinstall after a ROM flash:
Nilisco Flashlight
HTC Voice Recorder
HTC Home and emunutz HTC Home Customizer
HTC Audio Manager
Skunkworks FlashVideoBundle and TCPMP
Lordsmiff Battery Level
Jorrit Jongma WMWifiRouter
JRebeiro EsmertecJbed and Opera Mini
Stroths-Codyppc Led Killer 3.1
Oxios Memory
CooTek Cooperation Touchpal
GoogleMaps
PPCpimBackup
TomCo Solutions Stopwatch
Do you have a link for the HTC voice recorder that works with Mogul, I tried some but are not working. Cab installs the application, but when trying to record, always get an empty fie of 6b. No matter how long I record always have an empty file named voice00x with size of 6b. Or whay Im doing wrong? I installed the same file in a tytn and works perfect.
Here is what i use
Opera mini (great little browser)
DinarSoft MemMaid ( cleans out junk and temp/ frees memory too)
DinarSoft Handyswitcher (awesome taskbar app with cpu /memory usage that can be on top toolbar in every ap)
Shape Services IM+ ( great instant messanging app )
PPC geeks battery and performance reg hack
acbPowerMeter ( shows how much power apps consume, good for measuring 3g versus no internet use )
Blue Frog Touch Dialer, (htc diamond style dialer , skinable , bigger button layout very cool )
Led Killer 3.1 ( disables annoying flashing green service led )
HTC home plugin schen 2.10 ( nice gui mod, for weather and apps)
Youtubeplay
Total Commander
lokmeup IE Slow Scroll Fix
Google maps
Cloudyfa EsmertecJbed ( java)
PocketCM keyboard
RARLab pocket rar
Sipchange ( change keyboard tool )
someguy sMMS ( adds ability to send picture sms , providing you get your key from the sprint website)
PocketIRC ( mirc application)

Newbie with Verizon XV6800 - Help

I have to admit that I am overwelmed with all of the info regarding the xv6800. I just got mine this past Friday. I have not activated it yet although I did have Verizon transfer my contacts from my Moto E815. I am holding off activating until I learn more about the phone.
The feature that attracted me the most about the phone was the WiFi capabilities. I do not plan on getting the data plan. I do not know how to find out if the phone has Win Mobile 6.1. I would like to have it serve as a GPS.
Some questions:
If I am at Win 6.0 should I upgrade?
Is anyone aware of ant tutorials on using the phone and O/S ?
Is there a way to activate GPS by basically down / uploading a program and clicking on it?
What applications would be best? I plan on surfing, web-mailing, listening to music, working with the office applications.
Is there any "must have" hardware I should get?
Thanks and I appologize it my questions seem very basic but as I said, I am overwhelmed.
Nelson
1 not until you understand what the phone has to offer stick with 6.0
2 not me
3 yes but phone must be unlocked gpstoday and baf gps toggle are the best for me
4 surfing=skyfire music=s2p
5 screen protector

didnt it come with an interactive cd with a tutorial? mine did :S
if you are interested in musicand watching video you should definitly get the slunkworks flash bundle and tcpmp media player so you can goto you tube and watch streaming videos the way it should be done on mobile
i have uploaded the files for you if you are interested...install tcpmp first then the flash bundle,,if you need assistance let me know or search for "cab instyallation"
last about your GPS there has been people saying they have gotten it to work through google maps but it requires rom flashing first...but like GeLoPeZ said get to know your stock rom first...maybe youll like it
flaws
the fone does have a few flaws tho...the youchscreen is pointless wen it comes to small icons or scrolling...unless u want to get out your stylus everytime
it can be slow at times but nothing a little registry edit cant help out with a little...
almost everything has to be manually shut off or closed through running programs screen likr data connection etc,,,unless you get a few programs that can stop that hassel
the touch keyboard isnt worth anything its awful...unless, like i said you want to keep getting out your stylus
cant customize text message ringtones with custom ringtones
in all...most all these things can be fixed thgrough rom flashing or free downloadable apps and cabs i give it an 8 out of 10
hope i was helpful

FTouchSL fixes that issue. There's a free version somewhere on this forum, but for a little over 10 bucks (USD), it's worth it to get the commercial (kinetic scrolling!).

From the "Event" menu, select "Messaging: New Text Message" and select the tone you want.
I think the OP was saying that you cant "Assign" a specific "tone" to a user. Just a tone for all incoming texts.

Some questions:
If I am at Win 6.0 should I upgrade?

Yes you should. There is really no reason not to. Just remember that flashing the new ROM will delete all of your data, so back it up first.
6.1 is useful for a variety of reasons:
1. You can solve your GPS problem by doing it (see below)
2. It has a task manager built in
3. It has Remote Access built in (so if you need to connect with your work desktop, it's nice to have it....you can go and load RA anyways with 6.0, but it doesn't come with it)
4. Has some better screens for managing connections (IMO).
Is anyone aware of ant tutorials on using the phone and O/S ?

Not only is there a CD that came with your phone, but there is a Getting Started application in the Pgorams folder of your phone. Did you buy this phone second hand?
Is there a way to activate GPS by basically down / uploading a program and clicking on it?

Why yes there is! Only recently some amazing devs on this forum (skywing) devised an amazingly simple process for activating internal GPS. I just did it last night and it took literally 3 minutes to do and I now have Live Search, Google Maps, Amaze, and two other GPS based apps running on it.
Refer to this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424387
There are a lot of posts in that forum, but the upshot is either do the very simple manual install mentioned in the first post (I did it, I am no expert, took me 3 minutes) or go to near the end and look for the URL of the wiki that has the latest one click cab files to install.
What applications would be best? I plan on surfing, web-mailing, listening to music, working with the office applications.
Is there any "must have" hardware I should get?

I use Skyfire to browse the web. It is comparable to the iphone browser and it works great. It is in beta, but so far I have only encoutnered a few websites that freak out on it (e.g. www.projectgutenberg.org).
For music, I like pocketmusic 5.1, a freeware app from Pocketmind. It only does mp3 files 9the shareware version does all file types) but it has a great touch friendly skin and nicely shuts off the phone but still plays music to save battery power. It works with my bluetooth headphones seemlessly. Only issue is that while active it commandeers your hard buttons, so if you want to use the hard buttons on the phone for other than music control you have to quit the app.
Other nice apps (I won't list them all!):
1. Total Commander in place of File Explorer. Allows you to have two windows open and drag and drop files.
2. Vade Mecum is a plucker reader that I use to read ebooks on my phone.
3. Live Search and Google Maps are an absolute must.
4. I like Icontact (Burt's version) which you can find on these forums. It is a finger friendly contact program that works wonderfully.
5. I dig Youtube player. You don't need it with Skyfire, but I like it for playing files I download off of youtube. It will search youtube and play video directly or download it in .flv format for later playing. Useful to save the clips I watch a lot (Monty Python sketches, Weird Al videos, etc.) on my phone.
Those are the biggies, IMO.

Devin

[APP][23JUNE2009] - Zero Dollar Store (App Store for Windows Mobile)

So I got tired of waiting for Windows Mobile 6.5 and a "real" app store for Windows mobile and started working on one of my own. It is very early in development right now, but feel free to give it a spin. If you are a developer and want to add an app to the few test pieces I have in there head to:
http://grebowiec.net/wmappstore/index.php
- June 23, 2009
New Category list display - easier to read/click
Progress bar for thumbnail loading (good for big categories like GAMES)
Added about screen so you know what version you have (built in updating coming soon)
Added tons of test apps (some downloads fail...sorry)
- June 16, 2009
First version uploaded
Long delays after some clicks, be patient
Sounds like this has some potential
will test it out right away!
p.s. i love the name
very good idea !!
Works pretty well.
Maybe we could work together? I made this site: http://thewingster.com/default.aspx
Not to sound harsh but how many of these apps do we need? There are quite a few similar apps out now, some more polished than others.
While I agree that competitive products are always key to innovation, too many products of the same line flooding the market can lead to a sense of over stimulation and paralize the possible success of that line. Take a look at Windows Mobile itself as an example.
An "App Store" is probably one of the few exceptions where a plethora of choices is NOT the preferred path to success. Rather, having one or two major options (MS's version plus a community driven one) are probably the best way to see a successful tool for the Windows Mobile community.
I say if you're going to try and do something like this, either make sure it stands head and shoulders above all other products so that your program and corresponding website are THE places to go to for apps, or use your talents in helping the already existing similar apps get to that status. Otherwise, at this rate, Windows Mobile will never have a "App Store" that is on par with Apple's.
Whatever you chose to do, good luck in your venture.

There's device update.
Please let me know if you tried to add an app. There was a bug on that page that didn't get all the data submitted.

A lot of those are dead.
PocketGear is just a website and doesn't have an update utility built in.
Handango is mostly paid apps and no update utility.
This new app store sounds like it could work better, and as long as it actually gets going, it could work.
If you want to complain about too many similar apps, go to the Slide2Send thread, they want to make another "light" SMS app. We already have like 10 sms apps, we don't need another. Please tell them that!
Well, last night I wrote a quick RSS parser to load in some free apps from freewarepocketpc.net. There are about 140 apps up there now for testing. I will be releasing a new version today (I hope) with a few more features.
New version is up. Enjoy. Info in first post.
Deviceupdate only gives me errors and won't launch.
OpenMarked works slow without indicators
but yours work flawlessly on my device. Sometimes slow but, gee, it has to download stuff! Your appstore is already my preferred choice. Add some grfx, tidy the category list (maybe a list, not icons and make it fit to screen) and voila!
Tell me if you need some grfx
THANX!
great idea i just install and test
like the device update but don't have some apps, and not updating for newest version
opnMarket i got problem with this
need to try this one
