A simple " Didn't work out too well on my device. I will explain what happened..." would have sufficed. This way we can all learn and maybe together figure out what went wrong. Maybe it was operator error?
Please be considerate towards the time and work it takes others to develop, test, implement and share these mods as those who have the create spark do not have to. You CHOSE to load this app and as I see it, everything here is shared & loaded on a "At your own risk". I have had a 101:1 ratio of good to bad so...
Now could you explain what happened on your device when you attempted to install?

It said the program couldn't be loaded and then when I removed it left a whole lot of folders in my windows folder that can't be deleted.

Cube
It works great. I have it installed with the ftouchFLo 1.4.1 release I have no problems. it is great.

New to XDA EXEC

Hello one and all.
I have been looking at this forum for about 1 week and i'm still none the wiser. This may be because I have no idea what im doing and I am a little worried about making rom changes as I have no experinace of this.
I have a 02 exec. Which i am happy with but its a bit slower than I thought it would be. The phone seams to mess around when answering.
I have booted it up as normal on the basic setting.
A few questions that I have :-
What is the best setting to boot up on basic or corperate with the code ?
What reg changes are critical to boost performance ?
Any Software that I should get for the Xda ?
VGA settings do I need to change them ? What effect does it have.
Any advise would be good. If it could be given in a format my 2 year old could understand that would be good for me.
Thank you in advance
You'll find a wealth of information on each of your questions by browsing & searching the posts already on this forum.
thanks moandal that's why I posted.
1 post says basic setup another say corporate. 1 post says hack this that and the other. another says not to.
I'm new to pocket pc.
these forums do not make it clear what is best.
example radio version 1.06 or 1.08 at least 3 posts on here saying each one is better than the other. I have no idea.
all I was asking for is some guidance as to which set up has worked best for people.
@CRJL you've one up on me mate - I did not even know this thing had two modes!!!
BTW, why is that? Someone mentioned somewhere a corporate password - how to enter this & why would I want it.
BTW CRJL, I agree with you, these little devices are very confusing, espcially because the front end software (WM5) is soooooooo labourious!
Andy
when you hard reset the thing. after all the rom stuff loads up it gives you the choice of basic set up or corporate. it selects basic automatically after 20secs.
if you tell it corporate then you have to put the code 0506 in. this the uninstalls some stuff off the exec. you loose mms and all the gprs an 3g settings for conecting to the net. (i don't know what else it does) some of the people in the forums say it makes the exec faster. I could not really notice any difference.
you loose a few applications as well.
until I learn more I'm staying in basic.
I find these forums are for more advanced users so the simple questions tend to get missed. (im talking abot my first post) still not had a reply answering my questions

for this you should first make a hard reset (carefull, with hard reset you will loose all data!) by pressing both app buttons and reset at the same time.
When it starts up, after the installation countdown shows up you should make a reset to stop the automatic setup.
Now you have a machine, which is only basic setup. See how you like the things in there.
After you now enough about this, you can make same hard reset again and start the corporate setup. Then see, how you like this setup.
After this do same with basic setup.
In total you have then an idea, what you can have with the 3 different setups.
Now you can decide, which of the 3 setups you want to start with. After this, you should read the posts about Extended Rom, how to unlock it, which programs are in there etc. Then you get an idea for example how to install some software in the basic setup.
Also, you can add some programs from other Roms. For example I have an MDA Pro and I added the I-Mate Backgammon game to my setup.
Try out and see what customizations you want and need, which you do not want.

Basically, this does not really make difference. Forget about reg changes. Performance depends on running programs and setup - see above.
As far as I know, o2 installs some app in the basic setup, which makes the device slow. As I never tried o2 rom, I do not know, if this is true.

read here:

here also I recommend to try out the software and just keep the ones you like.
In total I would recommend you to create a directory on your PC where you put all the setup and cab files, which you want to have in your final setup. After trying out all, make a hard reset again and install the files from this directory. This prevents any junks to be left behind from your previous tries.

I think, you get more problems than it helps. Some programs appear too small on the screen. And when you make a Romupdate this does not work anymore.
I recommend not to install any VGA Patches. Instead just set the text size to more small and search in this forum for some registry hacks to change system font etc. and see if you like it, when the font is more small (this is good for Opera or PIE as you can view complete page!)
Nice reply, thanks mate!

Andy (thicky wicky Blacky wacky Adder)
thank you. I will give the 3 setups a go. I did read that if you soft reset before the counter that video calling does not work.
will give it a go and see what happens I'm sure there will be a cab file on here to sort it out.
anyone wishing to add any pearls of wisdom fee free. I'm learning more and more all the time.
app buttons: the buttons on the keyboard, which have changing functions. these functions are shown at the bottom of the screen. These buttons can be found to the right and left of the red and green call buttons on the keyboard.
about video calling: yes, this feature is installed after you switch on first your device. it is activated with one cab file. If you can find out which cab file this is, you can install it manually in the basic setup.

Why do people keep upgrading ROMS?

I know I am going to cause some trouble by asking this but why?
On taking my new Orange SPV M600 out of the box, I have to agree a bit sluggish, but this was mainly due to Windows.
After a little tweaking with the registry and some third party software it is now flying.
I originally thought that putting third party software over the top of the system would slow it even more, but know, the opposite was true. Using the standard windows task bar and start menu was dreadful. I tried a number of third party softwares such as True Toolbar, Handyswitcher etc, finally settling on Wisbar deluxe.
Everything now opens as soon as it is selected no nasty lag like windows. With some skinning and removal of Customised Today the phone looks great and is performing great. That is apart from my wired hands free. I can now answer and close calls with the button, but it does not activate voice dial when pressed, so I can't dial out hands free. All prevoius phones, Nokia and SE did this no problem, so why not this phone?
Anyway, back to the point of ROMS, why keep flashing?
I just got me one of those SPV M600 things and its not that slow, but I havent added anything else to it yet. Would you care to elaborate on "registry tweaks"? Im new to XDA/phones and havent started messing about yet.
I can not remember all of the tweaks I used, but there is a big section somewhere in here listing them. I have them somewhere on the computer but my filing is a mess and I can't remember what I called the text file or where I put it.
Basically the tweaks are just simple things like increasing cache size for fonts, programs etc. Moving file storage off main memory to SD card, disabling and enabling etc. It is claimed by doing this that the system will speed up a little. I am not sure if any of these actually did anything or if it is just down to Wisbar. All I can say is that when I click on a program it fires up straight away, before it could take a second or two.

Actually, the rule about flashing is: If it's not broken don't fix it.
People upgrade because they want to get rid of bugs or add features like AKU 2.0 that includes push mail and some other stuff.
Also some brands are better that others in some ways, and worse in other ways. There are several ROMs for the Prophet: Dopod, i-mate, Qtek, Orange. Finally some people cook their own ROMs throwing out useless stuff and adding apps they 'must have'.
All in all if you are pleased with your phone there is no need to change the ROM. When I got my Jamin it had the i-mate 1.xx ROM so I upgraded to 2.13 to get the AKU 2.0 goodies.
I always belive the latest is the greatest, even if its not. I still run the latest. While the release notes say "Added this, fixed that" they also contain a lot of fixes and changes not documented.
Hi all.
Thats actually a very good question. From my experience you dont really need to change anything. Maybe as you said some registry tweaking or some basic settings. However as someone already said, the golden rule should be if it is not broken dont try to fix it.
On the other hand you might want to change things with no reason, just because you can.. and I have to admit that it is hard not to do. Then you have to make sure that you know what you are doing cause otherwise you might end up spending your day in forums try to fix whatever you &^%$ up..
Take care.
Thanks for the replies.
I have to admit, when I first got the phone I started tweaking, then I found this forum and others. Once I discovered unlocking and flashing ROMS, I was very close to doing it. Then I remembered what I used to be like on my PC. With old systems like Win ME, I used to spend about 70% of my time tweaking and fixing, and only 30% actually using the damn thing. Not what I want out of a phone.
Just by messing around with skins, I have already managed to lose my phone dialer all together, I was left with a blank screen, so I had a phone that could not phone. I have it nicely skinned and running now, but I was never able to get the Orange dialer back.
Guess the only time I will flash my ROM is when there is a genuine update and it is covered by warranty, that way if the ROM is bad, Orange can give me another phone.
Thanks
I look at it same way as i look at windows.
My windows isn't broke but I always use Windows Update.
Why do YOU update windows, if you do at all. I guess im not sure if this is advisable, but that's just the way i do it.
Regarding upgrading ROM, MOST of the time, it makes the device faster and adds more features ( i never install extended ROM ) so I always upgrade when there is a new one.
I've downgraded ONCE. And only the RADIO because 1.11 didn't agree with my device.
There are ways to Backup the device, change to a different BRAND/VERISON of ROM then restore the backup. This makes changing ROM very easy.
Anyway, I have nothing better to do with my time so i upgrade whenever a new ROM comes out.
Sorry to but in again but I simply must disagree with the Windows update analogy.
I have my PC set to auto update as well, but Windows XP runs updates in the background and doesn't delete you data in the process.
ROM upgrade means HARD RESET, and unless you have a good backup a long restore process.
Also there is the danger of communication / power interrupt during the flashing and a bricked device as a result.
Finlay, like with your radio ROM, some OS updates have new bugs as well as fixes for the old.
But I do wish it was as simple as updating windows - then I would say, update away, couldn't hurt.
My analogy was based only on the reason for updating, not the process itself that you are stating.
What I mean is if your windows works, why update?.... This thinking... Not the "ritual"...
Sorry i did not explain that clearly. The guy just asked why update if you are content with what you have.... It has nothing to do with "I would update only if the process were simpler" like what you stated.
Sorry for the misunderstanding
I upgrade because I can cook my own ROM with better application suite

Because it's full of holes and most of the updates are plugging them.
I think the main point is you dont have to upgrade, you can if you want, its a matter of choice.
I like to always update, some like to keep the same and have never hard reset in their life. Im on my 9th this week :S but it is a new device and im still figuring it all out.

Hmm, then i guess your advice to NewSPV is to upgrade.
Me too, as i said in earlier post, i will always upgrade to the newest ROM, then just downgrade if i don't like the changes. Unfortunately it isn't as easy to downgrade from Windows SP2 hehehe

I was talking about Windows, not WM5.
My phone came shipped with an AKU2 rom and it's fine - after a little tweaking. I'm not going to risk bricking my pride and joy with a rom upgrade - as so many people have done already on this forum.
Can anyone name some good places to read about how to flash your device with a new ROM?
Also, I was wondering about what the "extended ROM" is. Is it basically partitioning part of your storage card for use as "internal memory" ?
Thanks for the info guys!

Look at the top left of this very page and you will see a link to the wiki section of this site. How to flash is in there.
The extended rom is where the operator adds thier own customisations (over and above what M$ provide) to the device, for example Orange and O2 add their own options in there and they install when the device is powered up for the first time or when it's hard reset. If you get access to the extended rom (again look in the wiki) you can manipulate what gets installed and if you're really clever, add some of your own stuff.
Don't ask me how to do these things as I have not tried myself, the risk of bricking the device is too great for my liking.
cool, thanks paul

Actually, it is virtually impossible to brick your device by manipulating the contents of the extended ROM. It is only accessed once, during first boot, and event that can be avoided by quickly soft resetting the device.
Basically it acts exactly like "file store" used to on WM 2003 devices, the only difference being it is hidden so ordinary users won't get rid of the operator junk.
In my case it was very nice of i-mate to provide various goodies there like voice dial (should be in ROM) anti virus (not only useless but damaging crap) Skype (could have just downloaded from their site, but nice thought) and backgammon (toys are always welcome).
But now ofter the initial installation it makes all the sense in the world to save these cabs (9MB~) to my PC and have extra 10 MB storage on the device.

hi all

newb here, my names chris and im from hagerstown MD im 20 and i just ordered a t mobile wing....just switched over from the sidekick lx....
cant wait for my wing to get here tomorrow. First off i have a few questions about modding my wing, ive tried to understand all the faqs and posts but im just not catching on. my goals are to get a custom layout with a custom pic for my backround with a diff. clock and ringtones from mp3s. possibly a mario game if possible. if anyone could walk me thru this id be very greatfull, thanks chris. p.s. i only have a 128mb sd card will i need larger?
You got alot to look forward to. As for games/emulation on the Herald is below par in my opinion. Games designed for Windows Mobile work great though. As for customization there is tons to do. First consider changing your rom. Plenty of options to choose from here. You also might want to invest in a little research on the benefits of HardSPL. If you wish to converse feel free to message me. I am in no way an expert but I have plenty of time to share what I have learned reading here if you want.
im really excited about getting it. ive checked out the rom stuff but i still dont really understand how it all works.....if you could point me in the right direction as to how i should do this in order from most important to least that would be great....i just know as of now i have to download, unzip, drag to phone, and manually start the programs....id just like to know for sure so i dont brick my phone. ive seen some accept donations for helpin out and id donate into a paypal accound or a sd card or whatever if someone cared to lay this all out for me and link me what im looking for etc. like i said i just want a custom layout or toolbar and ringers off my sd and pictures of my bike as backround....id like a mario game or somethin so when im bored at work i have a kill time

that helped me out alot
ok i think ive figured out alot from the forums now ive downloaded a morphgear emulator where can i get games for it and will i be ok using stock rom or will i need to reflash due to file sizes?

All I have to say, is there is a TON of information on this website to read through. I think I read and did some research for about 2-3 weeks before I actually hard spl'd my phone. I would recommend using the uspl method to flash first. It's safer so if you screw up, you don't brick your device. Once you start understanding more, you can Hard spl and then it's a lot easier to flash to different roms. That way you can try out all the roms out there to see which you like best. I used the uspl method and flashed to Open Touch v 3.0 biggy which I LOVED!
well i have my wing in hand and it rocks....unfortunately after ive decided to just do small mods first such as .cab etc. i realised i need active sync and my super retarded vista wont let me download anything grrrrrrr.
ok got my sync workin yesssssssss now i just need to figure out which file to store the cab files.....anywhere should be fine theoretically....

Yeah, what I do, is I made a folder called Cab Files on my sd card. I copy all cab files I want to install there. I also installed this cab file that keeps all your cab files in that folder after you install them. That way, when you flash to a different rom, you already have all your favorite cab files in that folder. There is no need to copy them from your computer to your phone. (When you usually install a cab file from your phone, the original cab file gets deleted) I included the cab file to keep your files.
sweet man now everything is up and runnin now im gonna figure out this clock glow and im already debating switching roms.....i cant get page pool mod to work soooo

Yeah, I used the clock glow thing too. All you do is copy all the files into your windows directory. It will ask you to overwrite them. Then, just do a soft reset, and presto!

Ah, yeah...trust me on this one, you def. want to check out some different roms though. I would look into using the uspl method first though. It's safer than hard spl'ing, and it's relatively easy to flash to. Look up Open touch 3.0. There is a ton of info on how to flash to it. If you have any questions, just private message me.

Can the T-Mobile system files be removed... no harm done?

I'm wondering if various included applications such as the Bing widget, Blockbuster Mobile, B&N eReader, the Gameloft game demos, and so on... could be removed? SAFELY, of course.
They just create what seems to be (and probably is) unnecessary system bulk. Not to mention, those game demos are completely hideous, and they obscure the potentially "uncluttered" Start Menu applications tray that could be had.
Could someone perhaps offer a bit of insight, maybe even enlighten me a little bit on this topic? Thanks.

They can be removed in a cooked ROM, not sure if it is safe for a user to try and remove the files though. Remove one of the wrong files and you have a problem. Most of my ROMS I remove all of this stuff for the same reasons you mentioned.
i just did. everything's fine, except I accidentally deleted opera too, but thats easy to be cabbed back.
Thanks for shedding some light on this topic fellas. Great feedback. But yeah, I kind of figured that the icons could be removed from the Start Menu tray, the program files could be deleted, (with a system warning - of course) and it seems that even after that things SHOULD BE just fine.
From what I understand though... T-Mobile has made sure that some of these third-party apps cannot be deleted. For instance, I'd like to know if TeleNav and MobiTV can be rid of as well. Seriously, once freeing OUR version of the HTC HD2 of all this corporate junk and clutter from T-Mobile partnerships... it'll be very, very quick. (As if it's NOT already...)

there is nothing T-Mobile has put into this rom that can not be removed when cooking. it is just a pain to find where they have implemented all the crap, some times is in more then one place the same change.
Shortcuts will be under \Windows\Start menu\Programs, related program files will be under \Program Files, shouldnt cause any issues deleting them.

Very true. However, would you suggest that the average Windows Mobile user attempt to dump, remove various things, then throw it all together, OR... simply use Resco File Explorer to remove the unwanted programs, system files, etc.?
I used to develop for Android, but this stuff is an entirely different ball game to me. So, I'm trying to learn the YES and NO basics here. Thanks.

cooking is the best way to remove things you do not want. a user can delete all the crap they want but this will not give them more storage (files cook in can not be deleted just hidden) but rater just hide things they do not want to see. just remember that if you delete a program, make sure nothing else uses it.

They can be reomoved but the registry has to be edited to remove some of the keys.Do one at a time and make sure the phone works ok for a few days before going on to the next.
you can do it but i wouldnt reconmmend it unless u know what ur doin but will say the each program is spidered in to the device the best sure way is to upgrade to a cooked rom but i must say but..............
WARNING U CAN CHANGE UR ROM BUT DOING SO WILL VOID UR WARRENTY WITH TMOBILE AND CAN AND WILL SPEND ANYWHERE FROM 50 TO 100 US CURENCY DOLLARS ON HAVING HTC DOWNGRADE UR DEVICE BACK TO ITS SHIPPED STATE BUT YES IT CAN BE DONE AND THERE OFFICE IS EITHER TEXAS OR CALIFORNIA I FORGET AND CAN TAKE UPTO 2WEEKS BUT I WILL SAY IT WORTH THE RISK JUST READ BEFORE U MOD........
ive deleted everything but telenav and mobitv, and no issues
Even though these programs don't show up in the Remove applications, they are able to be removed manually to release the storage--if you know where the files are located. (icons and shortcuts are easily removed).
However, whenever you do a hardware reset, they will come back, since they are part of the ROM which they could not be removed there.

Looking for a rather basic WinMo 6.5.3/6.5.5 ROM

Before people tell me to search the forums, that's what I've been doing for the longest time, trying every ROM on the Vogue forum. And before you tell me to try Android, I've done that too, and while I like it, I prefer Windows Mobile on this particular phone at the moment, but may put Android on it again sometime in the future.
The closest that I've found is NagROM V0.19 Touch, which is just a touch too basic. I'm looking for something like that, but with M2D and M2D Customiser, the HTC Cabs and Ringtones, the EZInput keyboard like in NFSFan's ROM, and Office 2007 or 2010. While I like the ROMs that come with other programs cooked in, such as Total Commander and PHM Registry Edit, I prefer the ROM coming without them so that when I go to install an updated version, I don't run into a problem. Too many times I've had problems installing a newer version of a program when it comes up telling me it has to uninstall the previous version, but can't, sometimes leaving me with just the old version, or both versions.
And before anyone says to cook my own, I've looked into guides, tried cooking my own, and the past few times I've tried, it wouldn't even boot up for the first time after flashing. I've tried numerous kitchens, some of which are supposed to be basic ones, perfect for beginners, but end up with one of a few problems: Not compatible with 64-bit windows, virus scanner blocks a crucial part, not meant for the Vogue, etc.
Basically what I'm asking is: Are there any basic ROMs with nothing more than M2D (and HTC cabs and Ringtones, and M2DC), EZInput, and Office Mobile 2007/2010 cooked in, or can someone HELP me with trying to cook my own (so that I can have it preconfigured for Verizon, MMS working and GPS set up)?
Hey, Ill cook you up a rom with the things you want. Should be done here in a little while!
Hey - that's a dev for you, man. Ask and ye shall receive!

Yep 17
Thanks!!
Haha, wow. I never expected someone to actually make it fer me! I'll have to try it out tomorrow as it's late now. Also, what kitchen do you use, Barogi? I still do plan on learning. (I'm a mix of hands on learning and being shown/flat out told what to do for the first time or three lol). Also, I assume it is set up as a Generic ROM (without the provisioning cab, MMS cab and settingsh, and Registry settings for GPS)? Also, as time goes more things come to mind to be cooked in (hence wanting to learn how to cook a ROM personally, and slowly becoming less basic ) lol. Still, thanks, majorly. I'll let you know how it works out when I try it tomorrow =3
Oh, and what version of EZInput is cooked in? I know I said "like the one in NFSFan's ROM," but that's only because I was unsure of the version (which I know now is 1.5.)

I use ppckitchen.org Buildos 2.0.0 And yes it is generic meaning you will need a carrier cab, Once you do install your carrier cab everything should work such as mms and gps. As for Ezinput i actually use a newer version than Nfsfans its (pcarvalho_ezInput_2.1_QVGA). If you want some help with cooking your own rom, just install ppckitchen buildos 2.0.0 since thats the only one ive ever used and know how to use and then send me a message on whatever you need some help with! Also if you want something changed in the rom i have already made for you before you get a chance to build your own, just let me know and ill do it.
EDIT: Had posted the wrong link to ppckitchen its supposed to be ppckitchen.org not .com
Hope you like it.

PPCKitchen BuildOS 2.0.0 is what I was using as well. I've used enough generic ROMs to know how to get it all working, so that's simple to do. Was just curious about that. I've gotten one ROM working through there, but somehow ended up with the Windows Mobile 6.1 splash screen (even though I changed it lol.) I'll try out your ROM, and I"ll keep playing with BuildOS. Hopefully I can get the file size down, and figure out how to cook in my own things, not just what's listed on the build menu lol. I'm kind of a hands on learner, kind of need to be shown multiple times, so playing around with it (though will take MUCH longer) SHOULD help me figure it out, but I'll keep in mind to PM you if I have any questions.

Ok great!
Alright, I'm trying out the ROM, and so far it looks great. Just one slight thing... I see you put in PHM RegEdit (an add on program I said I prefer installing myself so that when I go to update it I don't run into problems lol) Other than that, so far it looks perfect. Now if I could figure out how to cook a ROM where it isn't bigger than the stock, with just a few add in things as I think of them that I use regularly (and cook it as a Verizon specific ROM) then yay. Time to start playing with BuildOS while setting up my phone again lol

Ahh sorry about that Its just one of those programs that i figured you might want but perhaps had forgotten to ask for
Also i realized that after i had uploaded the rom that i forgot to add the reg edit to fix the 2016 date error on sms messages... Not sure if that affects you on Verizon, because i do not get it on Bell.
If you want... I can give you a list of the necessary things you should put in your own roms to make it function to its fullest.. like all the necessary bluetooth items and such?

It's alright, I think PHM is one of the ones that can be updated even if it's cooked in without any problems. And yes, the 2016 problem will affect me on Verizon. I had it happen to me on NagROM before, but already had the fix downloaded (someone made it into a cab) so I installed it to be on the safe side. As for the list of things to make it function to the fullest, please do. And if there is another way to contact you other than on here, can you tell me in PM? I'd like to contact you off of here for help with cooking a ROM. I've tried again, and it wouldn't even finish building this time. Out of about 8 times of cooking a ROM, it succeeded only once, but I forgot to compress it (this was before you made this ROM for me).
Also, slight problem, and quick question.
The problem is on M2D. The music tab. It says that it can't play the audio file and opens Windows Media Player. I haven't found anything on this yet and had it happen to me on a few ROMs. If it can't be fixed, that's fine, i can just take off the music tab (because I don't always slide along the bottom, I'll use the D-pad at times, and if other people play with my phone)
The question... Where can I find the default background for M2D? I changed the background using M2DC so it'll be on all the tabs, but you can't see the white text, so I wanna change it back until I find a different background.

Ill send you a pm with my cell number. Also I have always gotten that message when trying to use music tab. I dont think a fix has ever been mentioned... I know that it usually defaults to using audio manager and not the windows media player, perhaps that could be the problem?
The background... I think that you have to back up the default in M2DC before changing it in order to get it back, so that you can reload it. Just so you know, I don't use Manila at all on my phone, so im not quite sure how to fix many things on it. And remember that most issues are do to the fact that Manila is not made for our phones and has been ported over. But I will try my best to help you out.

I've had the music tab working before. I think NFSFan's ROM. And I'll just find a different background. I'll send you a text tomorrow before my class.

Yeah NFSFAN always cooked Audiomanager into his roms... you could put it in your own as well and it probably would stop the error.

Barogi...can I hit you up for a more basic one that that? I need the lighted WM ROM there is. I basically need Windows Mobile 6.5.3 and that's it...no extras.
If you could make one that has everything removed except Windows (even ezinput, office, ringtones, htc apps, etc...then I would be very appreciate
Of course if you have a kitchen link I can do it myself - thanks !!
Thread moved to General.
any screen shots avail?
