Annoying GPRS...is a bug or not? - Networking

Hello all,
I'm getting tired with my new HTC Touch Dual (codename Nike). I use an UMTS operator where i've free internet traffic. When my first operator has no signal, my phone go on GSM roaming. Here, even if I've no applications opened, starts sometimes GPRS/EDGE connection that is not free for me, and also have a per-connection price.
I've already tried to disable AlwaysOn key into windows registry. Also I've tried to disable SuspendResume key in
HKLM-->Comm-->ConnMgr-->Planner-->Settings-->SuspendResume
deleted ~GPRS
All without success.
Actualy I'm running WM6,
ce 5.2.1622
build 18128.0.4.4
rom 1.31.408.09
thanks for any advice.

Check that you don't have any program requiring an internet connection that is scheduled to be run every N minutes. Otherwise... I don't know. Maybe someone else will give other ideas.

well I know nothing about UTMS; possibly this will disable UTMS too, but I've seen references to

QTEK9100 and GPRS/EDGE - AAARGGHH!!!!

For some reason - my QTEK 9100 fails to maintain the connection to my GPRS service. Once I connect, it holds the connection until I make/receive a phone call. Thereafter, the device shows the connection in place, but it fails to pass any more data through the connection. To keep using the data connection, I must either soft reset or switch flight mode on/off.
(Needless to say, I have been able to use my SIM in other GPRS-enabled phones).
ROM 1.1.7.5
Date 9/22/05
Radio 01.01.10
Protocol 4.0.13.16
ExtRom 1.1.7.105
Anyone have any ideas?
Is there a ROM upgrade or RegEdit that could do the trick?
Same **** with mine 9100 on MTS. We should get together to solve this issue. Let me know if you got the solution. My ICQ 2662731, phone no. 916 137 7540, Leonid.
Absolutely the same problem with my Qtek 9100 on MTS. Some people on the forums say it's operator's problem; others claim it's not. However, switching from MTS is not an option for me anyway (corporate cell phone number, etc.) so I would be very much obliged for any solutions, or at least hints towards what can be causing it.
One possible solution (haven't tested myself yet) is setting GPRS to 'always on' via the registry editor; however
a) Will it drain my battery much more than usual?
b) Won't GPRS get disconnected in standby mode?
hi
hi. try to initiate GPRS connection with the default inbox email. press send and receive to check email. let it connect GPRS. when someone call u. it still maitain but the during call, the other person must pick up the phone. if nobody pick up the phone. the GPRS will have problem and need to turon and turnoff radio again. this is the only to maintain gprs, that is, to initiate GPRS connection with the default inbox email.

One thing I know for sure:
it will not drain your battery any more that when connecting gprs on demand. I used to use the "grps always on" feature and can't tell the difference in battery life.
Regardless of the "gprs always on" setting I do sometimes have problems with the connection. The icons (gprs) say it's on but no data is transferred (no e-mail/www received) but it happens very rarely and I can't tell in what circumstances.
By the way: holding the red off-hook key for 5 secs closes the gprs connection - check if it doesn't make your problem easier to bare ;-)
Maybe you could try another operator's SIM - at leat you'd know if it's the Wizard or the operator.

Yes, I know about this one; however, since GPRS won't reconnect anyway, this doesn't solve anything for me.
Oh well, I'll keep experimenting and hopefully Qtek will release some ROM updates in the future to deal with the problem.
Update: After playing with the settings a bit, the problem indeed seems to be with phone calls; i.e. I can disconnect/reconnect GPRS manually without any problems, but once a phone call is made or received, GPRS stops reconnecting. I have a suspicion it's actually an operator issue but haven't had time to try some other SIM yet.

I called service today about this problem, they heard nothing about it, they said. Also they invited to flash rom, that was released month ago, they said. I asked them about version but call operator didn't know.
I'm afraid to do that because they could flash older verison than I have, and there are some roms that have troubles with incoming calls, I read in russian Qtek forum.
My version:
OS: 1.3.9.4 RUS
Date: 9/29/05
Radio: 01.01.10
Protocol: 4.0.13.16
ExtROM: 1.1.7.105
I read there are some utilities to save rom but I cannot find how to save rom to hard disk to restore it in future surely.
My version is:
ROM 1.1.7.9
Date 9/16/05
Radio 01.04.10
Protocol 4.0.13.17
ExtRom 1.1.7.111
(Russian OS)
Just read on some Russian forums that there were the same problems with s100 until the new radio version was released, so I guess we just have to wait.

Just tried it myself, didn't work for me either.
So far, the problem can be diagnosed as: regardless of GPRS status, a phone call (outbound or received) will screw up the existing GPRS connection and any future attempts to reconnect unless a soft reset/flight mode switch is made.
I hope to god a ROM update will be available in the near future; meanwhile, any and all suggestions are welcome.
Today I visited service, they flashed me the same rom I already had. Then they tried to solve problem at least 2 hours but with no success.
I advised them to be ready for crowd of users of 9100 who connect to MTS.
Technician said I have to wait new rom update, but he cannot say nothing about release date.
I want to beleave...
Some guy at Russian forums put forth an idea that our problem might in fact be an issue with lousy MTS implementation of EDGE.
So in theory it could be solved by turning EDGE off entirely (if it is indeed possible).
Same problem on my Qtek 9100 ... is there any updates available for the ROM?
I have this same problem on both my Kjam and Qtek 9100. I am in the United States and use Cingular. I suspect this is not a carrier problem.
I'm in the US on Cingular with a Qtek 9100. I think the issue is that the carrier drops the GPRS connection after time, or the signal is lost and WM5 doesn't react. Either way, seems like leaving GPRS in constant ON mode plays into the problem rather than help it. After installing GB-SOFT Tweak http://msmobiles.com/news.php/4714.html and setting it to release GPRS if unused for more than 10 or 15 minutes, I don't get the GPRS problem nearly as often. Furthermore, when a GPRS lockup does occur, turning flight mode on and then off again restores function without the long cycle time of a soft reset
Christian
I had the same problem on my IMate and it was fixed by turning off (2sec) and then turning on your device once the GPRS connection was established. Haven't tested on my jam yet
I have the same problem since upgrading to AKU2 ROM - before I never had that issue...

GPRS connection loss when using phone (WM6)

hey,
i'm using a htc artemis (o2 xda orbit) with windows mobile 6. there's a problem with the gprs-connection that really makes me mad. when i use the phone-attitutes gprs is disconnected automatically.
i'm booked 30 megabytes per month, per gprs-connection i loose 100 kilobytes. so i am very interested in keeping the gprs-connection stable for 24 hours.
can anyone tell me how i can force gprs NOT to disconnect? i'm thankful for any hint
There is no way to do that. You can either be on Data or on call. No way to do it together
my xdaII never had any problems running both data and call
it's typicaly an issue with old equipment of the operator rather then a phone issue
I have the same problem with hermes. I read in one of the threads that it is not possible. Here is the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363787
please read through it, and it would give you more idea about why GPRS/EDGE would not work while you are on call. Correct me if I am wrong.
Alright, so i'm not the only one having this problem.
I wonder if the device or windows mobile causes the disconnection. In my opinion "usual" mobile phones are able to both connect to gsm an gprs. So, is it a problem of windows mobile, the network provider or the orbit?
Thanks for your replys!
I think i got the resolution: the gprs-connection remains stable in case of not using the hardware-buttons to answer incoming calls! Use the software-keys of windows mobile, displayed on your touchscreen! You'll see, after answering an incoming call, gprs is still active. I think that should work on other devices also.
will test and get back. good to know

Problem: HSDPA drops to 3G stopping video continually

Hi there, my Trinity has an issue that makes it so I cant watch videos online.
It connects using HSDPA and plays for a short while before dropping to 3g and killing the video. It does not then reconnect to HSDPA without getting the video to seek ahead or behind.
Has anyone had this issue or know of a way around it? Its really bugging me.
Thankyou

WiFi and Nework selection?

Since flashing to Dutty's Holy Grail Leo ROM I have noticed that my data usage on my Orange plan ( a miserly 250MB per month) has risen sharply.
At home I always use WiFi but think that it is no longer being automatically selected in preference to the Orange network. I can force on to WiFi using "No Data" and it works fine but it is not happening automatically and I have to be very careful.
Is this an issue with the otherwise wonderful Dutty ROM or is there an option somewhere in the Tools & Settings that I need to activate/deactivate?
Has anyone else experienced this?

Normal behaviour to be honest. A number of wm6.5 roms try to connect automatically for updates (weather, stock, email, QuickGPS etc etc) and way around this is to use No Data as you are. Other methods to get around this also exist though my memory has let me down....think its called NoDataRoaming. Plus some of the latest builds wm6.5.3 no longer try to automatically connect
@ Fallen Spartan.
Thanks for the low down on WM 6.5. I was aware that those programmes connected to the networks but I am fairly sure that the "YouTube" cleint when presented with the choice of WiFi or the Orange Network always picks up the later until I force it with NoData. I ma fairly sure that with the original stock ROM it was WiFi then the networks.
Just a bit annoying having to manually disabel when I want to use WiFi - but at least I know.
Thanks for your help

What ROM are you using and IMEI first 4 numbers? To Know the IMEI is *#06# on the dialer, just paste here the first 4 numbers, also, in what country do you live and what network you use. This infos are to know if you have the correct radio controller software for your phone model.

I had network issues as well, the signal was around 1 or 2 bars, however I since found a way to resolved it by using a service code, check out my steps:
Go into Testing Mode:
1. Launch the Phone app and type:
*#*#4636#*#*
2. Testing Mode will load up, if it doesn't try the code again
3. Scroll down to preferred network types and try a new setting. "LTE/GSM auto (PRL)" helped increase my signal strength here in Warsaw
4. Click turn radio off
5. Turn on Air plane mode/Turn off Air plane mode
6. You may have to repeats these steps until you find a configuration that works for you.
Cheers, also I have attached some screen shots
