Recover WM6 last foreground application after power on - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi,
Before upgrading my WM5 device to WM6, each time I powered it on I got the same application window I had before it got powered off.
Example: If I was using pocket IE and then turned the device off, as soon as I hit the power-on button, Pocket IE was the active application and I could continue browsing from the point I was before.
Since I upgraded to WM6, each time I turn the device on, I get the Today window. The applications that were running when the device was turned off are still running, but in a minimized state, so I have to use a task manager to bring the desired application to the front.
Is there anything I can do to have the old behavior I had in WM5?
Thanks,
Fran

I think you have some 3rd party app that does that, Battery status can do that, and you can disable it in settings. I'm sure others offer this feature (some like it, some don't). Check your applications.

Yes, the problem lies in the password lock. Even if the phone has not locked and left you at the password entry screen just having it enabled will cause this to happen. Disable the password lock and it will operate the way it should. It's a WM6 issue.

You are right. Disabling the password lock makes it work as it did in WM5.
I am quite new to WM, so perhaps I am going to ask a stupid question, but here it goes anyway: Can this be solved by Microsoft? Is there any way to ask them to do it? Since I installed WM6 I have a "Windows Update" feature, but it never finds any updates. Maybe this could be the first one???
Thanks,
Fran

XDA II Turning itself on

My XDA II keeps turning itself on, as if a program is waking it up.
I have checked that no programs are running using the option under Start/Settings/System/Memory.
Is there a way to see what processes are running in the background?
It does this even when stationary on my desk so it's not an accidental button press.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I'd appreciate any suggestions on tracking this down as it has a huge impact on battery life.
Thanks.
yup... mine was caused by Activesync. Make sure you have all the settings set to "Manual".
You can also download "Notification Check" by Scarybearsoftware. It will go through your PDA and look for extra events that don't belong there.
For some time I was getting a calander event for some birthday that didn't even exist!
yep, here too
I notice that it turn on after upgrading from 1.66 to 1.72
I'm not sure that could be for this...
I'll try "Notification Check"...from scarybear software
I had this and it was doing my head in! But using the check notifications did not help. I thought that possibly some of the games I installed to my SD card may have caused the problem.
So I copied everything off the card, and formatted it in the pocketpc (resco explorer), not from a card reader! Then I copied everything back and since then not a single un-intentional turn on.
Cheerio
Howard
Well, it didn't fix it for me either. I'm now testing with the Storage Card removed.
I'll post back if I find anyhting.
Another problem is when your GPRS connection activates itself!! soo annoying.
Taking the storage card out made no difference.
So far, however, with Flight Mode turned on it seems to be fine.
If this is the case then that would be really annoying.
What would be going on with Flight Mode Off to cause the XDA II to wake up?
With the radio off, GPRS is also off (as is BlueTooth and IR).
Is GPRS turning the device on?
Immediately after the device powers itself on, tap the signal meter and see if GPRS is connected.
Do you have a POP3 or IMAP4 Email account set to retreive messages at a regular interval?
Thanks, I'd already checked those.
The radio off was a red herring. It woke me up at 02:06 for no reason that I coulod find, with radio off.
I'd really like to find this before doing a hard reset so that I can fix it again if necessary and posting here will help others.
There's nothing worse than curing a problem and you don't know how.
My feeling is that it is being caused by some program you have loaded . . . or worst case, by a combination of programs. Unfortunately, if that's the case, the most likely way to track down the culprit will be to -
1. Hard-reset your device.
2. Run it for a time with no additional programs installed to make sure the problem is gone.
3. One at a time, install a single additional program and run it that way for a while to see if the problem occurs.
4. Only after proving that the problem does not occur with that configuration do you install another program.
5. If the problem occurs after installing a program - Hard-reset the device again and install only that program - then you know if the program itself is causing the problem or if it is a combination of programs.
This does not necessarily sound like FUN . . . but I can't see a better way to positively identify which program is causing your problem.
HTH
Thanks for that. That is my thinking too.
I'll do that when I've got a few hours to spare and I'll post the results, identifying the offending program.
ON and OFF
I have the same exact problem.
And I did found out that this is some of the program I install.
Example : SPB Pocket Plus (also other Today's plugin)
I did a hard reset, and try with out any program, then ad one program, then two etc..........until I found out that SPB was the one.
unfortunatly I love some of the plugin, but I have to get rid of it, if I don't want my battery to fall off in one day.

This is curious, as I have SPB Pocket Plus 2.0 installed, and I have never experienced an unintended/spontaneous turn-on (of my imate anyway ).
try turing battery monitor off in sprite backup
and also turn off the battery bar thing in spb2
that sorted my probs out
Turning on
I use Pocketplus and don't have a turning on problem, except when cradled, in which case it continuously tries to sync, even with everything set to manual.
Don't think Pocketplus is the cukprit.

device couldn't wake up after turning to sleep mode

I just got AMEO from T mobile which I believe the same as HTC advantage.
despite of being SIM locked by T-mobile, I am experiencing another problem in waking up the device after it goes into sleep mode.
After I left the device idle for few minutes, it turn the whole screen off. (not only the back lit).
I can see the LED for BT/wifi still blinking.
But no matter which button I press, it couldn't be turn on at all.
As final resolve, I have to soft reset the device every time after it sleep!!!
Can some experts here advise me? is it a defective unit? or some other settings are wrong? Do I need to return it to the vendor?
I don't want to keep the device always on by disabling the auto off feature in power setting either.
Does someone have the same problem like me?
Thanks for any advise in advance.
What happens if you put it on the keyboard while "asleep"? Even if it means taking it off there first.
If doing that and pushing the power button fail to turn it on, it's a defective unit.
it's the same problem even i attach it to the keyboard.
a bit funny though, if i press the power button from the side to turn it off. I won't have any problem to turn it on.
but if i leave it to auto off mode, then i can't turn it on until resetting it from the back hole.
can it be improved if I flash to other ROM?
My Ameo does it occasionally - I find that (re)attaching the keyboard tends to bring it out of sleep better than pressing the power button. I get the impression that by pressing the power button, it sometimes gets confused that its still on and tries to turn itself off (even when it is already off). Tends to lead to a reboot every few days though. Waiting (fingers x'd) for WM6 to see if it behaves better.
do you guys have this option
settings>button>lock
try to toggle the checkbox to see if it helps
I'll try it! I found it under Settings/System Tab, 'Key Lock' icon.
I'll report back within the week.
I can confirm that it doesn't help my AMEO.
anyway, thank for your thought.

To digital:
can I ask for a favor from you. could you try to make the device auto power off without sim card in.
and see whether u will have the exact problem i have or more frequent it dead...
due to my unit is locked to T mobile network, i still haven't put any sim card in.
Tried it without simcard in but it still turns on ok after the fix. TBH, sounds like you're getting the issue more than me - mine only does it occasionally (once every couple-3days) and as yet, I've not managed to locate a consistent cause. I'll keep my eye on it though with the fix and let you all know how I get on.
the other thing that i can think of out of at the moment is that you are running some prog from the sd card/microdrive in the background so when you try to switch your device on then it does not get started and hence the problem...
try tweaks2k (you can use the trial version)
it has a bunch of settings for this... (just check that it is compatible with ameo first)
install 'screenoff' and assign to one of the button.
it works fine.
have to make work around like this now. no idea why this problem only happen to my AMEO...
anyway, thanks for all of u!

I have a similar problem. My device does not wake up in one case from 10 approximately.
Frequency of occurrence of a problem decreases if to close the phone's program compulsorily.
In other branch to me have told, that the problem can be because of the Active Sink's program. Have allowed advice to disconnect automatic start of this program. But I cannot check up because my program all the same is started if to switch off an option of the automatic device. :-(
hard reset can solve the problem completely. ;-)
I'm pleased to say that the 'button' tweak posted here has worked... So far!
Thanks Gents (and lasses if there are any).
That happened to me too yesterday.
I hard reset it and reinstalled everything to microdrive now. (trying to eliminate the possiblity of compaction thread) Removed SPB Pocket plus, which I've come to be quite suspecious by now. Also removed true VGA. So far I have not got a single freeze yet, touch wood. If it runs okay for a few more weeks with no freezing, will put back true VGA and see how it goes again. Will try to isolate the offending software bit by bit.
Hi,
I've had the same problem with my Advantage
After some weeks of test i have found how to solve the problem on my Advantage. perhaps it's only works on mine but you can try.
i have installed "all" progs on memory and not on microdrive. on microdrive i have only a few exe like wififofum or progs not intend to run when i turn my Athena off.
then no more problem waking up my athena.
I think the problem could be that microdrive cause a time out or thing like this when we wake up the PDA then athena freeze waiting about datas from microdrive.
then for me now it's programs like browsers, sscontact, traylaunchers etc .. => memory
programs like painting tool, etc ... => microdrive and close (kill process) them before sleep mode.
and all is ok now for me. The only freeze in 1 week was Pocket IE freezing (but the reason is pocket IE sucks)
There was actually another point that I forgot to mention concerning the freezing. I found out that the free miniSD card came with the bonus pack was actually faulty. With the pocket mechanic professional benchmark, I managed to see only less than 200kb/s read and write! I did a hard reset, and installed everything on microdrive, and touch wood, I have not got a single reset or freezing yet these two days. I install nothing into memory, as we all know that it takes up to 2 seconds to write a block of data into NOR ROM, which is why we should always shift our directory of IE cookies/history/cache away from the main memory. Since the main memory (NOR ROM) is good for executing program in place but terrible in writing, Microsoft's MikeCal thinks we should not keep any data there. (See this thread: http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/03/16/552996.aspx ). I try to keep the memory as free as possible to minimise compaction thread kikcing in. Will see how it goes in the next couple of weeks and take on from there.
I'm happy to confirm that, after a weeks testing, the button 'fix' seems to have resolved the issue! Thanks all.
I have been experiencing similar problems.
After being left on standby for a period of time (>10mins), the unit sometimes goes into "autistic" mode.
i.e:
Power button does not function. Unit GSM light flashes, but will not resume from sleep.
I've tried the following:
Attaching USB cable. No change.
Attaching keyboard. No change.
Calling phone. No change.
Soft reset. Starts ok.
I have now tried:
Settings/System/Key Lock
- set to 'Do not lock buttons'
However, I suspect ActiveSync.
The unit was attempting to Sync every 5 minutes, while connected with a USB cable. I therefore followed advise (read elsewhere) to create a dummy server to allow an ActiveSync schedule to be created, then deleted.
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=246522
This is coincident with the start of the problem.

Good to know I'm not the only one. I don't think it always did this either.
Do you have HTweakC installed?
ok I am a little lost here if you put your device in standby it will awake to what ever screen was there before it went to sleep. If you power your phone off completely it HAS to start at the today screen thats just how it boots up... try using the ROM i have posted in the forum in my SIG since i have no issues with it.

I'm not sure that we are understanding your question properly. I can see some of those replying above are puzzled as well.
As Austinsync says above if you turn on after normal sleep mode you return to the screen you were on before. If you fully powered off (not something you should be doing in regular use) then it will go to the today screen.
So, when you start up your device what screen do you expect to see if it's not the today screen?
Mike
I believe I undestand the OP because I have the same problem. No matter what you have loaded, after going into standby the phone returns to the Today screen. The original active app is still loaded, but not in the foreground.
I have tracked the problem down to either pocketbreeze or Handyswitcher. I'll test more when I return from the business trip I am currently on.

Hmm.. I'm not using either of those programs. As for software running, I'm using HTC X-Button, phonealarm and spb tools.
I just flashed a different ROM. Older LVSW modified by austinsync this time. Same problem!
I just flashed the LVSW by Sleuth255 and it doesn't do this!
It seems to have been a problem with all of austinsync's ROMs. Phone starts up MUCH quicker now too!
EDIT: I just remembered that the customizations from EXTROM didn't run with Sleuth255's ROM. Could be part of it.
I have the same problem with Schap's Rom (3.57). Anyone else?
My .02.
I recently hard-reset my Schap's 3.57 ROM and have installed minimal software that interact with the Today screen. Before hard-resetting the device, my system would also go to the Today screen whenever my device came out of standby. After the hard-reset, it no longer goes to the Today screen until after the timeout period defined in the Today Settings.
Before Hard-Reset on Today Screen:
Office Communicator
Windows Live Search
Activesync Exchange Server Direct Push
Palm Messaging
After Hard-Reset on Today Screen:
Palm Messaging
No Data Connection or Direct Push
Hope this helps.
Murad

Running Schap's 3.57 ROM, not the Official HTC WM6 ROM (as in my signature)
I really don't have this problem!
OS see my signature
I just had to hard-reset (Schap's 3.54b), and the device still goes to today screen. Gaaaahhhh!!!
This is also being discussed here.
mikechannon suggested this might only happen when you're using device lock? My exchange admin requires it - I have a device lock and I also use Zenyee Stayunlock to allow me to adjust my settings...

Issues with WM 6.5 Official Build

Hello Friends,
I think by now all here might have updated TD2 with WM 6.5.
Many with cooked and many with Official, like me.
I think if we can post all issues with WM 6.5 Official ROM here and we can suggest HTC for any fixes/patches.
Or we/developer here can have fix for that .
Thanks.
Hello
One issue I've come across is when you have the messaging application running in the background and you receive a new SMS the keyboard pops up on the home screen (in Windows deafult/Titanium).
Man.
Hi.
I have noticed sum issues when trying to install some apps. when i choose the destination of where i want to install the app, it just keeps the waiting cursor on the screen and doesnt install.
this is sometimes though. so not sure if it is actually an issue with 6.5 rom

no I have not seen that,
you may just need SDKcerts or NET CF 3.5 to get those apps installed
BTW which apps ???
I've had some issues. Offical 6.5 German ROM
* When using Live Messenger I've had a few hags and I had to restart the phone.
* Without any app running task manager showed 98% used memory... only 2% free and nothing open??? the phone got slooww
* Facebook: When I was with wm6.1 official rom with a fix cab I could use Facebook within contacts, I was able to sync picture, birthday and showed me last update from contact. Now with wm6.5 and facebook that comes it only sync picture. I want birthday back and be able to read last update.
Batery Charge Issue
I think the indicator light does not change to Green even if the batery is fully charged.
Also the information tab does not change the last fully charged value.
PS:
I have seen the "Update for HTC Diamond2 Power LED Notification" update/fix has been release by HTC (http://www.htc.com/in/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=249&cat=0&dl_id=600) much before the 6.5 release and looks like this is NOT fixed in 6.5.
Thanks.
I've noticed the option to choose LED-blink-time on new messages is no longer available, it's now on 5 minutes and greyed out. What the h*ll was the point of that?! I've talked to HTC, they said "yes, it's grayed out", but had no good reason for it. Seems totally stupid thing to do. Anyone knows how to un-grey the option? A little registry-tweak maybe?

Hi All, Just re-verified and found this is NOT an Issue.
Actually the charging bar shows 100% but still the light was not turned green but after some time it did changed to gree. So NO Issue here.
The only thing is charging does takes lots of time .
spb backup?
Has anyone managed to install spb backup on the official 6.5 rom? I've tried this, and despite claims from spb that the latest version is compatible with 6.5, I always get "install was unsuccessful". Any ideas anyone?
Google maps
Also, google maps does not seem to auto-rotate the screen, although many other apps do. Does anyone know how to control which apps are allowed to rotate or not?
i am using the WWE version, and when i activate the wifi and leave the device for 5 minuts and it goes to sleep, when i press on the power buttom the wifi icon disappear and the wifi switch is still on, and wifi connection is dropped.
Does anybody has the same issue. or it is only me.
How do I make album close instead of minimize?
same problem here with the WiFi.
I really want to like this 6.5 build but there are too many problems.
1)I cannot turn off the LED notification for new emails, even if all options are off. Beyond that all the LED notification options for the phone, text, voicemail are greyed out, why disallow me from choosing?!
2) Memory leakage is horrible, will continue to rise and rise until phone grinds, and this within a day.
3) In a week it has never picked up 'My location'. Google Maps manages this to within 10 metres within 120 seconds without GPS!
4) Settings from within the Windows take you to the very limited settings tab which then needs an extra press to get to all options. Plain bloody stupid.
5) I have found some screens which for some reason wont touch scroll, normally within the MS apps such as myphone after it has synched. Have to use the scrollbar. Feels like the 90's all over again!
HTC have managed to build a ROM for the HD2 in the same time with Winmo 6.5 and yet this ROM is bloody useless, they have dropped the ball badly and i really like HTC.

There's a setting for "Turn om WIFI auto" and one something like "Turn off WIFI when inactive for .."
I did these settings the first day, through some sort of wizard, but can't find it back! I guess in your Comm-manager, under "WiFi" it says something like "Turn on Automaticly"?
It's a very nice option, because now WiFi is prioritized over 3G when you try to go online, but where the h*ll did those settings go?!

Yes this happened to me too, and at first I couldn't work out what was going on. Now however I think it is a deliberate feature, probably as a battery saving measure. It all seems to work in a sensible manner: when I come out of standby the WiFi is off, but as soon as I use an app that needs WiFi it automatically reconnects. Also when I am away from my home network, it uses 3G automatically. So I actually like the way it works now.
I have a problem with playing music with touchflo or w.e it is now. I play a song and when it's finished it doesn't play the next song (whether in a playlist or not!) It is set to "Repeat all" but still doesn't play all the songs so i have to get the phone out at every song -.- is this just me or is it a bug?
RE: Issues with WM 6.5 Official Build Reply to Thread
Dear All,
I am also not satisfied with the stock wm6.5 build, I’m using the Dutch-Rom
I have issues with following Items,
1) When my phone shows a pop-up message it “bleeps” eventhough it has been set not to sound while it notificates. Frustrates me every morning as my phone has a custom made get-up-very-smoothly alarm tone and than it starts with a harsh BLEEP !!
2) The powerdrain is horrible, I NEED to charge battery each day, with wm6.1 the device was charged after approx 3 days!
3) Recently experienced something totally new: while I work my D2 always is connected to my pc trough USB and normally charging, I just have been noted by WM6.5 that “the charging power was not enough to charge the device and if I want to charge properly I needed to close down programs…” (excact notification I forgot but in rough words this was the message). Guess what!! The only thing running is Manilla ???
4) My location is not accurate enough
5) Where is the Freakin battery indicator, why do I need to go in to the notification screen to see my battery status, I NEED TO SEE THIS AT ANYTIME HTC!!! :s
These are my main frustrations with the wm6.5 build and certainly hope HTC can fix this
Best regards

Lock the screen but leave the GPS module running?

I don't know if this is really just a "screen lock with disabled bits" or if this is some full-blown idle mode, but I was wondering...
I don't have any car-accessories, but I'd still like to use TomTom. Now, TT offers some nice voice guidance, which is more than enough for just getting around (if I ever get really lost, I can pull over and pick the thing out of my pocket).
However, leaving TT running in my pocket means that the screen is on, the display changes and thus battery will be drained considerably faster than if the thing would be locked... not to mention an accidental press of a button (it's in my pocket, after all).
However, locking the phone turns the GPS off, so even if I leave TT running in the background it does me no good.
Is there anything I could try out in such a case?
So... this is impossible? :/
Nothing specially made for that has been released that I know of.
But from info I could gather around, RunGPS has the capability to be set to turn off the display leaving the GPS running.
So you could just install rungps as well, set it to turn off the display with GPS on, and at the same time also run your fav GPS app, tomtom in this case.
What should happen is that the screen will go off with the GPS still working (thanks to rungps) and tomtom will run in background being now able to access the gps device (still thanks to rungps).
Still worse for battery than having only the useful app running (as rungps will take some cpu cycles for itself and will cause more load on the device) but should still be better than leaving the display on at all times.
Let us know your results.
hey what do you know, 900th post
Hmmm... strange... Last I've noticed my GPS kept runnung while the device was locked. I used NaviComputer to track a walk I did with a friend and had my HD2 locked in my pocket most of the time.

First times I used navicomputer just for fun, I thought gps was running in background, but only later I realized that the GPS signal was restored right after turning on the display, and navicomputer was showing a straight line going from my latest positiotn before turning off the display, to the first positiotn it got after wakeup... and I'm sure of that since I double checked several times
In case you check and you DO have your GPS on at all times with device in standby using navicomputer, please let me know the list of installed programs you have (I doubt it tho)

Change this with your registery
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Resuming]
"gps0:"=dword:00000001
"gpd0:"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Unattended]
"gps0:"=dword:00000001
"gpd0:"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Suspend]
"gps0:"=dword:00000001
"gpd0:"=dword:00000001
Normaly the numbers are on "4" - put this on "1" and gps should stay awake even when you put the phone in standby.
It will stay on until a program stops using the gps.

This was already "0". I changed it to "1", too.

Try this. It works on my HD2. I use Run.GPS to log my tracks while jogging or mountain biking.
Other way to keep gps-fix while screen is off - you have to do only a "screen off", not "standby". I did it with AEButtons+ (e.g. screen off on long-press green call-button) - but with this reg-changes it works better for me.
Or you can only lock your phone and let it go to standby on its own. Then gps-fix will still keep alive. GPS-fix only gets lost if you press hardware-power-button (red end call button) - and registry not changed like above.

Awesome, thanks!
I'll try it out tomorrow. A bit too late to go for a walk now.

as far as I know rungps is able to use the gps during screenoff as a feature.
I tried locking the device without pressing endbutton, but navicomputer loses the fix no matter what.
I also noticed thos reg patchesin some other thread but I also read there that other users tried them with no avail; did you test those registry fixes with software other than rungps by any chance?
Without these reg-changes i tested RunGPS and when i press hardware-power-button - GPS-fix was getting lost.
If i only did a screen off - then GPS-fix was still there.
Now with these reg-changes i can press hardware-power-button during running RunGPS and GPS-fix is still there.
I did only test with RunGPS because that is the only GPS-app i want to use while screen is off/device in standby.
If i use a navigation software (iGo8), then i want to have screen always on- so i didn´t test this scenario.

I see, thank you, let's wait for the OP to test this himself.
Since I already knew rungps has a feature to turn off screen without losing gps signal, I don't think it's the reg settings, but rather it's rungps itself that allows you to do that; since you couldn't test different apps we don't even have a verification
I may try to get at it tomorrow, no guarantee I'll have the time tho
I´ve installed sportypal, too. Maybe i can make some tests this weekend.

us wants tests with navicomputer
No really, navicomputer is cool anyway, so install that too since you're at it
All right! I'm back with some results. Now, a quick note: I switched to MapaMap, a Polish map application, as it has a lot better maps for Poland.
I performed two tests: firstly, I started a route around the street and used the softftware lock to lock the screen. Result? MM application kept running and kept talking to me. Nice. However, this is still vulnerable to the physical button being pressed and locking the phone; when that happens, MM looses GPS and, in fact, I think the system somehow pauses this applicaiton altogether (more on that in the next bit).
So, since the physical button is still possibly a problem (after all, during driving the phone is in my pocket, and it's not really difficult for that button to be pressed), I tweaked the registry as Bib_x suggested. However, it seems that even IF the GPS module was still running, the MM application enters this weird suspended state, and whenever I resumed it, it would always greet me with a "searching for GPS signal" message. Granted, it would find the signal very quickly, but it still didn't work while the screen was off.
The odd thing is that mode the application went into. Normally, when it's minimised, I can pick it from the task-switcher and bingo! It's instantly back up. But when I press the hardware lock button and then unlock the phone, I get the Windows "please wait, I'm working" wheel in the centre for a while, before the app is restored.
I can check with TT again to see if the problem is restricted to only MM, but something tells me it's not an isolated case. So now I'd need to figure out a way to keep MM working when the phone is locked; kind of like the music player.
EDIT: TomTom resumes a lot faster, but it still looses GPS; right after resuming it says "no GPS device", and that's with the registry changes applied and after restarting the phone.

exactly my experience with any other gps software.
Didn't even try the reg tweaks as I didn't trust them that much.
Just try installing rungps as per my suggestion and using that at the same time with your fav navigation software, maybe the fact that rungps keeps the gps subsystem working while screen is off makes also the other app do its job.
After some more fooling around, I've made it, albeit I fear this method might be limited to MapaMap only.
When installing MM there are two options: either installing onto the HD2 or directly onto the MicroSD card. The former option will always install something called "wake up plugin" (might be worded differently in English) which doesn't show up in the "remove applications" menu, so it's more of an integral part of MM and probably can't be removed in this case. In the latter option, this plugin won't be installed, and in fact, is unavailable.
Initially, I've installed the app directly onto the phone, so that plugin was included automatically. My guess is that THIS was the bit responsible for putting the app into some sort of "sleep" state. However, when I installed the app onto the SD card without the plugin, I could lock the phone using the end-call button and the app wouldn't shut itself down like that; it even kept talking to me during the ride, so everything worked. Once more, I can confirm: THE SYSTEM KEPT ON WORKING DESPITE BEING LOCKED - I drove quite a distance and took some different turns, and the phone kept nicely informing me of the new distance and of upcoming turns.
This was all done using the registry settings suggested in this thread! Without them, the app will loose GPS data when the phone is locked, and if I set it to record my movements, it'll create a straight line between the start and end point, with a "no GPS signal" in the middle
EDIT: Do the registry values 1 and 4 mean "always on" and "always off"? What about values 2 and 3? I'm assuming there's no way to make the GPS module "smart", so that it's turned on only when needed? Or is it possible to add a manual switch for the GPS module to the Comm Manager?
GPS will only be on if a program sends this comand. And if you end the program, then this program sends a kill-comand to gps.
Have you tried with Pocketshield screen lock?
There is a setting at Locking > "Except when...", there you add exceptions to applications which will be allowed to continue running with the screen turned off.
The reg edits work for me with GPS Tuner and google maps, not with iGO8. I had actually tried that myself, but only the ones in "unattended" and set to 0 instead of 1 (as that's the fix that's used to keep music playing in Coreplayer and that works), but apparently it wasn't enough for the GPS. Good news
