Hi everyone,
I've had Orange M3100 (Hermes) phone for about a year now and loved it to bits (helped by the fact this site is a god send for customising!). However - my contract is coming to an end and I'm considering upgrading. It seems the only upgrade route I can really see is to a Kaiser. Thats not so much as an upgrade as just the same phone with a few new features. I've already upgraded my M3100 to WM6, I'm not that bothered in GPS that the Kaiser has, and the spec of the Kaiser is almost indentical to the Hermes.
So my question is - is there anything else in the pipeline from HTC that would be worth waiting for. I'd rather wait 3 or 4 months for a newer phone to come out if there was one available.
Anyone any idea....?
good question, im in pretty much the same preticament. only thing ive found really is the newer version of the touch, with the faster cpu +wifi etc, or maybe the touch cruise, but neither have hardware keyboard. not sure if i could cope without my keyboard
You could take a look at http://www.pdadb.net/ for some info on what's coming soon.
The Cruise looks nice, kinda like a keyboardless kaiser
Yeah - my partner has just got a HTC Touch and it looks nice but I couldn't do without the keyb. That counts out the Touch Cruise as well.
Guess I'll hold onto my M3100 and see what turns up next year

You need to work out what you want on your new device? I have considered the Polaris as the keyboard on the Kaiser looks, um, fragile...
Good Luck
Elwyn
I think all of you have seen the specs of the HTC DIAMOND
Who is going to get the HTC DIAMOND? I'm not going to waist my time waiting for members who have the courage to keep trying making the wifi and gps working. I have to felicitate their efforts but think i'm about to sell my dual to get HTC DIAMOND or HTC TITANIUM(Diamond with 20 keys...not a lot info for the moment)
ps: please replace "by" by "buy" in the poll options
i'd go for a TITANIUM whenever i feel like it
but i do like my sirf iii solar bluetooth gps device and dont miss wifi as i have unlimited web bolt on, BUT, speedy graphics will probably push me over to the diamond side !
I buy via work a HTC Daimond, if its released. We use HTC Units ... most are HTC VOX and Niki.
i'll be keeping my touch dual for sure.
i agree that the diamond is awesome in terms of functionality but why on earth release a pocket pc phone with no SD card ????
there is no way I'm buying this
the only thing that's keeping me from being completely sure that i will replace my touch dual with the diamond is the lack of a 16key hardware keyboard which i have right now.
although if it's true what they say about the HTC Titanium which is supposedly the Diamond with a HW keyboard then that's it, done deal for me.
I hear that HTC is going to provide the drivers for the Kaiser, if that's the case, the drivers for our Touch Duals will soon follow. SO no reason to rush getting the Diamond yet for me. I'll give it a few more months.
I do have a question .... Why are they putting such low mAh batteries in highend devices now-a-days?
The Diamond has 900mah or something like that... It's 3.5g with the highest HSPDA available right now, right? So ... that's like 1 hour on 3g? lol. It's processor is really fast, and that'll eat up the battery. It's graphics are really good, too (from the videos i've seen)... So.... Sedio Ext. batteries anyone?
what i find odd about new htc products in general is that they always have something missing.
for diamond that would be - sd storage + quad band + keyboard
really very frustrating.
I agree with boboduck. If they release a diamond with a keyboard and sd-storage I'll consider buying one. Until then I'll keep my Niki.
The diamond is aimed at a different market than all other HTC phones released to date, its more of a phone to pose with than get out of your pocket at a works meeting. 4GB is plenty of storage for most users and the lack of a keyboard isn't a problem. I don't see people with the iPhone or LG Prada refusing to buy them until they come with a keyboard.
I am buying one because they are aesthetically and technically brilliant, I'm keeping my dual primarily as my day to day phone and my diamond is going to be my going out phone that my friends and other people see me with.
By the way I've pre-ordered mine off Play.com for £429 with free delivery, cheapest Ive seen so far and they are due in stock on the 19th of this month!

It's a marketing strategy. You do not put every feature in one device, because if you do, you have no reason to sell other devices.

As done by most other manufacturers too, Nokia used to never release a complete phone, although you could argue that the N95 8Gb has changed that. Sony Ericsson also release their phones in either the Cybershot camp or the Walkman Camp, but not both.
I do hope someone can cook the touchflo 3D for niki
We will have to wait for these anticipated 3d drivers to come about before manilla is usable on the niki i reckon, the diamond looks to stutter a bit with it and that has got the 3d drivers running!
I'm not holding out much hope really for it running well and i reckon it could be a memory hogging monster, HTC haven't put 192 meg of ram on the diamond for no reason....
i totally agree about the marketing strategy. this is the reason why dual has no wi-fi.
Because if it did, then nobody would buy the elf or vogue.
if htc do however release an all-in-one phone, i think it'll hurt our pockets
i just hope someone can try to put the touch flo 3D in niki
I just pre-ordered from play.com
I havent had it agreed by my wife yet.... eek!
Will keep touch dual. I'am student and have no money for the diamond!
So far I can't find a soft keyboard that is comparable to the hardware keypad for Chinese input. so better stay with Nike.
I voted for replacing my nike with a diamond, but the absence of sd breaks it for me.
A PDA without external storage is ridiculous.
Hello
For the first time here, I´ve sold my HTC-touch and are asking your opinion what model will be my next phone?
I´m sure it will be a win-phone again, but what model?
HTC Diamond
HTC Pro
SonyEricsson X1
diamond is cheap, pro is about £300,xperia is over £500 inebay
i have xperia fully unlocked/de branded,i'm willing to sell it for ?£450.
but they all the same, diamond is smaller without keyboard and built in 4gb as well.
still non can come close to iphones touch screen and user interface!!
unfortunately xy_kolla is right. WM is the best but touch screen interface is zero compared with Iphone. I suggest to buy WM with Keyboard.
HTC Announced they are releasing a new version of the the touch cruise, what are your thoughts on this is this htc trying to recover from a bad software implementation or what, i think its unfair for them to bring out a new model to recover from it not every one can afford upgrading phones everytime a new one comes out.
You mean "Iolite"?
Here are many roms with the same specs (like footprints or M2D or Navipanel...).
So you can have a new phone without buying a new device!

I am under the same impression too. HTC released new devices in Diamond family with distinctive names. I don't think they ran out of naming ideas . This is a clear indication (at least to me) that the original Cruise has some fundamental flaws. If it where to be firmware related a new ROM or some sort of SW upgrade could have that fixed. I am convinced that is HW related (i.e.: bad or compromised overall design; bad choice of components, etc.).
Some people here on this forum could argue that the design is similar with some other successful devices from the past. This is not completely true since we don't have full access to the internals of these designs.
Being able to load some non-official ROMs on our devices is not a real upgrade it is merely a change of user interface and a set of bugs/problems different from the original ROMs.

This makes no sense. If HTC knew that the original Cruise had problems, why would they name a new device with the same name as the flawed one? When the original Cruise was released it was pretty flash from a hardware point of view - remember that was a couple of years ago now, so you really can't compare with current stuff. People seem to think that their devices will somehow manage to stay up to date with newer technology - which is impossible. For me, other than the video driver issue (which for me is really no issue at all) the Cruise works fine. If it didn't, I'd bite the bullet and simply replace it with a newer device, which by the way would probably be out of date 3 months after I buy it.

I never implied, or thought for that matter, about my device staying up to date and competing on the same level with the newer devices.
The question was: Why not HTC Touch Cruise2 or something else? Why the newer device has exactly the same name? Oh yeah: they added the (09) description in order to avoid confusion and a heap of confused customer support.
One more thing:
On the device list on their site there is NO trace of the old Cruise but one can find the Tytn II which is an older device. One can ask himself way that is?

Considering the number of users of the Blackstone in this forum PLUS the other enthusiast sites such as modaco.com and htcpedia.com should we not start up a lobby group to petition HTC to get access to the WM 6.5 upgrade PLUS new SENSE GUI ???
I understand the HD2 is on it's way - but a lot of us waited for the release of the HD and supported HTC by purchasing it....at very least we could get the 6.5 upgrade OR an update to the TF3D (i.e. SENSE) interface...
Any thoughts ???
Asp
Agree. They should give us at least the new GUI.

I agree. Not because I want a wm6.5 update with htc sense from them (there are already plenty here), but because how they sidelined us, users of the "older" touch hd, touch pro and diamond. It wasn't that long ago, HTC. Don't try to justify yourself. Imagine paying big bucks for a HTC Touch HD 5 months back and now you read a statement from HTC that they won't be providing updates for you cause you're using an "older" device.
I mean, c'mon. Don't treat us like rubbish. We helped you to become what you are today. From a nobody in Taiwan, to the number one producer of windows mobile phones. The Blackstone was only released about a year ago (or less, to be exact). Did you really expect us to keep changing devices every couple of months? No offense to TD2 and TP2 users but the spec sheets of these "newer" aren't any different from the Blackstone's! Benchmark results may prove otherwise but the bottom line is, the guys from HTC releases new phones every now and then which has little or even no improvement from the devices their replacing and they expect us to keep up. wth.
I agree with abubakar comments...

And again you make a valid point - they should have an 18 month minimum on platform updates / enhancements.
When you go to the HTC website for support - for example "HTC Touch HD ROM Upgrade (For Telstra)" they quote that "As always, HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience"
Is access to either WM 6.5 or HTC Sense an example of "HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience"
Anthony Petts is the Sales and Marketing Director ANZ for HTC Corporation - Any one got any contact details for him ?
Can't really see a petition doing any good. The HD is a great device but it isd starting to be over shadowed by newer devices which HTC want us to buy instead of giving us updates for free. Why would they change this when they don't need to!!
I know that I'm very dissapointed in HTC and that I'll probably never buy new phone from them. Their support is very bad and there is so many new phones, so... I'm totally confused which I should buy for example. I have Blackstone and that's probably tha last phone I'll have from HTC.
Having been the owner of both the htc touch cruise and the hd 8282 I will say that htc customer support is a bad as I have ever seen from a mobile phone manufacturer.
Seems as though once you have purchase the device they forget about you. I have made my mistake twice and will not do the same again. I guess I will bite the bullet and get an Iphone unfortunately.
I have to say that I'm on about my 5th HTC device and only once have I had to speak with HTC support and they where pretty good. My old Prophet had a problem in that it was stuck in headphone mode! HTC replaced the mainboard and had it back to me in about 12 days.
With regards to updates to WM6.5 for example, if you brought a PC from HP with Vista on it do you think they would give you a free copy of Windows 7 when it got released? No they wouldn't so I'm not sure why people expect HTC to do the same thing?
What would be interesting is if Microsoft made available for purchase the latest build when they release them but then of coarse you'd be left with just a vanila OS and none of HTCs own apps. Unless HTC went down the route of making available all their apps in a similar way HP and the like do for PCs?
PS - I'll also be buying a new HTC device when the time comes!

maybe after the 1st intro of WM7?
6.5 sucks for me
and if Microsoft not gonna do anything about improvement then HD is my last WM device
It seems to me that if you buy a phone with a certain level of capability (or system software level) you have a reasonable expectation to support to maintain that level. Unless it's part of your contract at purchase, it is unreasonable to expect new software and enhanced functionality.
I'm not being funny, but I've seen similar calls many times over the last fifteen years. I've never yet seen them be effective. One of the most frustrating examples of this is the powerful video hardware, totally unsupported by drivers on a large number of HTC devices. Massive campaigns - no substantive action.
I mention this as a warning to people considering a new purchase from HTC, like for example the the new HD2 - it's a great looking hardware platform, that the OS doesn't natively support. Doesn't it feel like we've been here before?
I'm not buying another HTC device until the capability of the hardware is fully exposed, in a consistent way via the systems software, for use in applications. I don't see any of the HTC WM devices where this is not some level of an issue, in fact the last phone that I had from HTC, that didn't give me some cause for concern in this regard was Tytn.
From now on I'm only buying finshed, well integrated, mobile devices. I want to spend my time and money exploiting their potential and adding features I need.....not trying got get them to work properly and overcome limitations in the release state of the device. I'm drawing a line in the sand, right here.....

+1 I couldn't agree more! I'll be keeping an eye on the forums for the new phones and unless I'm satisfied HTC are finally using an operating system that can fully utilise their great hardware, this will be my last HTC device.
+1 to the OP, and I'm behind the line in the sand too
I read somewhere that if the phone does not have windows start logo button on it, chances are slim that you get 6.5 update. Touch HD has that button missing.
i prefer a good non official cooked (wm6.5) rom than an official one
So it don't really matter for me.... but i still think that's a shame!!

Because very few would pay for it, making it a waste of their time.
Besides, their business is selling new phones. Why cannibalise the sales of newer models by upgrading older ones?

In many cases they do - prior to Vista release and again with Windows 7 there are machines that are enjoying upgrades once the new software is released - sure HTC are doing it with select devices as well - but you have to admit that with the HD being just 6 months old (...in Australia anyway...) that it would be fare to deem it acceptable to offer an upgrade....

Agree with your comments here - and I would have no problem paying a reasonable fee to upgrade to 6.5 and HTC SENSE.
For me, i'd rather have a rom update with all the new focntionnalities of the TF3D ( newer version or even Sense UI perhaps !), bug fixes, etc. than a 6.5 windows for the touch HD with all the old things.... what windows 6.5 really brings to us ? a new start menu ? what else.... less memory usage.. i don't think... faster ? don't know really cause 'im not an expert, but didn't really see anything new interesting... and of course anything an application can do, freeware of course and without having to cook a ROM...
So, my point of view.. i'd rather have a new rom on old windows but optimized and with new fonctionalities !

Ever heard of a company called Apple and a phone called the iPhone?
Why should I buy the HD2, which will become out-of-date as soon as WM7 arrives in a few months, when I can get an iPhone and free software upgrades for life?
HTC need to become more customer focussed and pay more attention to the competition.
However realistically I don't think a petition will work. Falling market share might though.
