Seperate thread for Atom Life - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom General

There seems to be MANY users with the Atom Life. I'm in the process of getting on through my work, and there is a LOT of people posting issues for the Atom Life within the threads for the Atom.
From what I have been able to gel, there is only passing similarities with the standard Atom and the Atom Life. This will surely lead to ill-informed people trying to flash Atom ROMS to the Life and eventually when a new ROM for the Life is available people will try to flash that to their old Atoms. Jiggs said that there are layout differences in the way that these two devices are produced, and I would therefore expect that after doing this, you will have a brick.
To avoid this issue, would it be possible for someone to create a new thread devoted to the Atom Life.

Delta

100% agree...

I second that we need a separate area for atom life here

i think it very good

Yes.. I also agree... I am also a new user of Atom Life.. it is too difficult to find the correct info here and some of the information is very confusing.

Totally agree.

Completely agree

that was great idea since atom life is differ from the other atom products...

i am in this.

I'm in too!!!

Me too!!!!

me tooooooooooooo
yep! we shd have diff thread for atomlife.....

No updates from Mods yet?

I belive we'll never have an own sub-forum for Atom Life.
Why ?:
- The Atom Life reaches his end of lifetime soon.
- There is no developing community like for Atom/Atom Exec and this side called "XDA-Developers" and not "www.Please-help-me-I-f...ed-up-my-Atom-Life.com"
- more people are interested in HTC devices, even if all the new devices from HTC are the same ****.
- there are no updates from O2. So for what we should talking about ?

i'm having probs with atom life......the battery runs out very very quickly

awful review of o2 atom life
just did a quick search on the web. the review of this phone is pretty awful!!!

Will magician ever be upgraded to WM5?any chances?

hi there
I know it's WM5 upgrade not available right now but I was just wondering that if it'll ever be possible that mini would be upgraded to WM5.Is it possible or mini doesn't meet the hardware requirements of WM5?your ideas?
Read the forums This was discussed all over the place!
However
You can always hope, especially as teh o2 atom specs ate similar.
I get mine hopefully next week when I am over in China.
Nope, never, jamais, nunca, nie, никогда, nooit, ποτέ, mai.

I hope that you are aware that Magician and o2 atom are not only different devices, BUT ALSO FROM DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS.
I will not be so naive to hope for WM5 on Magician, instead I hope for a nice brandnew WM5 device under the christmas tree. This hope is more likely to become true
Oh, another one!
  BWAAA HAA HAA HAAA HAAAA HAAAA
Sorry, but I find people who ask this funny!
Especially because WM5 is absolutely uninteresting. It has been very slow on almost any new devices and the "nomore backups" issue isn't important to most of us people since we know how to make good backups - don't we?
I think WM5 is interessting! Not because of the Backup-Options.
Look here:
http://mobile-review.com/pda/articles/wm2005-1-en.shtml
The Outlook Contacts for example are _much_ better in WM5.
You see the Contact's full name _and_ the numbers and calling is so much easier!
Hate to sound like a newbie (which I am, just got my Mini/Magician today and first post to the forum), but according to some websites (http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_xda_atom-1372.php), looks like the new Atom will use the same processor as the Mini? Only difference is 128MB ram and possibly wifi (although another thread is debating that issue).
Wouldn't that be reason enough to expect a way to install Atom's WM5 to the Mini?

Stupy, the problem is not just the processor type. The OS has to interface with all the hardware on your device such as Camera, BT chip, WiFi, Screen, etc. All of these require "drivers" that have to be written specifically for your hardware.
Unfortunately WM5 on the Magician is almost impossible. Unofficial upgrades for other devices occured simply because M$ and/or carriers were testing the new OS on these devices and the ROM got leaked. Now that the testing is over who do you think will take his time and effort to develop this interface for free??? And that's providing he/she has the necessary resources.
At this point the only way to upgrade to WM5 is to sell your device and get a new one :-( I will probably go for the 02 XDA Atom or HTC Prophet fairly soon.
(btw, I really really hope someone proves me wrong )
look at this link
http://www.shinyshiny.tv/2005/12/pink_pda.html
the specs are almost identical to xda2mini except for the 128mb, does this mean there is still hope that wm5 would still be possible for mini?

Thanks kta for sorting that out. I just got the Mini, so it'll be a little while before I get the Atom - they don't sell too many of these types of phones here in Canada. No matter, I'll be happy with what I've got. Cheers!

Atom Life

Atom Life is in the market now! It is really attractive to me. However I heard ppl said that O2 wont do much about the ROM update and less ppl willing to custom make some ROMs for it too. That makes me thinking...is it worth to buy Atom Life? Should I wait for other brands release some devices with similar spec?
Sigh...maybe I should stick with my HP rw6828 and wait...
I have the same thoughts. I want the XDA Atom Life but I really want WM6, as far as I know the Atom Life isn't even realeased in Australia yet but it is very soon, around the 19/3/07 so it hasn't even been released and it has an old operating system, that would be like ordering a brand new computer and getting windows XP, it's that stupid and I really don't think O2 like to do any upgrades.
Does anyone think WM6 will be avaliable for this phone or even made for it by developers on this site??? I have an i-mate Jasjam and Jasjar and the differences between the amount of activity on those forum compared to the atom forum is massive, does anyone really buy the XDA Atoms, they say it was a big seller but the forums show differently.
seal,
Too late, i am already in the hole.
I have sold out my HP RW6828 and gotten the Atom Life last week. I am in HK and Atom Life was released in HK on Feb 28.
So far it is great! I am satisfied it more than my old RW6828.
Hello,
is the Phonepad for Atom (that you can find here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=262768) compatible with Atom Life? thanks!
I am not sure. I didn't install that program.
Would you mind trying to install it please?
I just got my atom life too, and i wasn't too worried about not being able to upgrade to WM6. New OS's take notoriously long before the majority of software become compatible. Just look at the time taken for most software to convert from 2003 to wm5. I am sure by that time most users would've changed a phone, or someone would've figured out how to install wm6 in atom life.
I just heard back from O2 and here's what they said.
"Dear Greg,
Thank you for contacting O2 Asia Technical Support.
With reference to the issue that you have raised below, as you have noted, currently released O2 devices run on Windows Mobile 5 operating system. Please be informed that O2 Asia is currently looking into the possibility of Windows Mobile 6.0 devices (no further news as of this moment).
We do value the feedback you have provided with us. We will attempt to relay it to the relevant department for review and future possible action. We thank you for your time and consideration.

Once again no commitment. I tend to agree now with the above post, so many things still don't work with WM6 so I will stick to WM5 and skin it to look like Wm6.
Basically they say "we won't ever give you WM6 on already excisting devices, but in a while, when WM6 is starting to get stable, we may develop something that runs it". Atom Mark 4, I guess. And I totally agree, WM6 at the moment is far from leading edge. It's not even bleeding edge. It's moronic edge. Like WM5 when it came it's really only an Alpha system from what I have read in different tests. Like the original Atom. It took more than half a year from it came until it was truly a release version, not Alpha or Beta.
i allso don't think O2 will do it.. this is what i got from them.
Dear Ali,
Thank you for contacting O2 Asia Technical Support.
With regards to your query below, O2 Asia latest products (Xda Atom, Xda Zinc and Xda Stealth) are running on Windows Mobile 5, O2 Asia has not release any plans with regard to upgrading the Operating System of these product.
Should you require any further assistant, kindly reply to this email. Thank you.

Interesting with technical support personell who writes worse english than most Norwegian 16 year olds... Don't they have Word to spell and grammar check their mesages?
Couple of things I have yet to installed into my Atom Life.
1. Phone pad.
2. Portrait/Landscape view icon. I believe some PDAs have this feature for easy conversion of screen display by just tapping on the icon.
Actually, I installed Phone pad but apparently, it didn't seemed compatible as I believe it's for Atom Exec. Is it due to version difference? As for the Portrait/Landscape icon, is there a link here for the upload? Thanks!

TyTN vs Zinc - help me choose??

Hi Folks,
I need a bit of help choosing my next PDA, I've had loads of pocketPC, windows mobile devices inc. HP Jornada 548, Tosh 540, Dell X5, iPAQ hx4700 but this will be my first forage into "convergance" devices.
I was originaly tempted to upgrade my phone to the Orange UK version of the HTC TyTN but i'm now getting cold feed with all this talk of new devices due out, I know there are always newer and better just around the corner but I don't want to jump into a 12 month contract just to find a newer and better unit being available next week.
My dilema is this.....after seeing the specs for the O2 Zinc with the Xscale 520Mhz processor and seeing the benchmarks against the TyTN I'm now more inclinded to wait the for the release of this Zinc (26th March 07), however on my travels through the tinternet I have stumbled upon what I would consider my ideal device...the HTC Kaiser, does anybody have any ideas which network will be carring this device and when it will be released????
I'm fairly sure the overwelling opinion on the site will be for the TyTN but I just need to know what makes this device a "No Brainer" compaired to the O2 Zinc.
Cheers Jim

Not really the answer you want, but my philosophy on life is, get the best you can today and not worry about what's out tomorrow... otherwise you'll never get anything because you'll always find that a month or so down the line something better will come out... so to say!
Otherwise, the Zinc does seem impressive... but O2 have already delayed the release once, so who's to say it will actually be out at the end of march anyway
True....Very True. The exception to that case was the iPAQ hx4700. which in my opinion is still one of the very best PDAs out there and its now 2 years old ???
I decided to hang back for the release of the Zinc hoping WM6 will be on it. have you tried flashing your rom to wm6??? if so did you have any problems setting the phone back up for T-Mobile??

I'll agree with you on that... I used to have a hx4700 myself... it was the VGA aspect that appealed to me, but I felt it was before its time... oh, and slightly big!
I think the Zinc will have v5.2 on it???
I've flashed my MDA several times and can almost memorise the internet/mms settings that takes approx. 2 mins to put back in... its all good fun
You may never flash WM6 on a Zinc...

Yeah - similar case here. I flash frequently and I could probably set it all back up again the way I like it with my eyes closed Top tip: get CAB files for all your favourite apps (and any relevant serial numbers) and keep them in a folder on your storage card. That way you can even get all set up from a full reset with nothing but your phone.

Absolutly agree.... I kept all my CAB files on my SD card..Just incase.. but that was WM03se. Is there a HTC "official" rom update available for wm6...where did the wm6 roms come from?? oh and whats the best...
back to the original question,
I own a TYTN and ive had good test run with the Zinc, even though the Zinc has a faster OS the tytn feels faster and reacts better. The finish of the Zinc is a big cheap looking too.
If i was to buy a new phone today it would be the Tytn again, if i was to wait then it would be kaiser or even one of the new samsungs.
Cheers lads.....Just bought a TYTN - Orange SPV M3100 to be more precise.
Now whats the score with all these ROM upgrades.
and is there a today plugin simliar to the Orange today screen
Problem with O2 is the data charges. They're probably the worst out of all the UK networks!
I'd hate to get a phone like the Zinc or Kaiser and have to constantly monitor my data useage.

That's far too big a question. You've got some reading to do - see the wiki
for the mods.. you can delete this message if you want...
i just want people warned specially in asia region that o2 zinc is not that good ..
although better processor ( but you will not see the difference compare to HTC hermes ),camera and o2 integrated software..
THere are many other choices on O2 products... Atom exec, atom life..etc..
Just not this is O2 Zinc is not worth recommending....
or im strongly recommending HTC HERMES (Dopod 838 pro, Softbank, or the HTC Tytn if available) if your fun of slide keyboard...
I promised you this will be a great help on you...
Trust me...
I just want you to be happy like me now..

POLL: % of hermes users running WM6

Guys (and gals), just wondering what the %'s work out as for the people running WM6 in place of 5 on there hermes.
And as an aside, hows it going and anything you have noticed as a negative..
Thanks andy
guess i probably should ask, after you have upgraded, can you leave it alone, or is it one rom after another?
i have done the update on my orange 3100 which i think is a brand of HTC and all works brill!!!!!!! god i wish i did this ages ago
I used to upgrade to newer or older more stable WM5 roms every month after I got my 8525. I think I flashed my SDA a dozen times in 3 months. After I put the last WM6 rom on my 8525 I haven't touched it since. There are a few backlight and keyboard glitches that have tempted me to try another firmware but I haven't been annoyed enough to worry about it.

does this mean that the wm6 upgrades do not have battery issues etc like the universal upgrades had?
can you roll back to original rom if needing to send back under warranty?
I figure that because my wm5 has no problems at all I should not screw with it. On the other hand, the wm6 on my trinity is full of bugs and will be updated soon.
Mine came with wm6 and runs flawlessly. I thought I would mess with a new rom but ... if it ain't broke I ain't gonna fix it.
Interesting that the % of wm6 users is as high as it is. I would have expected a lower % but it would appear the flashing path is well trodden.
I am sort of thinking alone the lines if it aint broke... but then maybe wm 6 would be nice too lol

Geek,
The only way to be sure, apart from this poll, is to do shedloads of research and reading off this forum eg the wiki, the mr vanx guides, all the stuff on fixing your phone if you brick it, the hard spl stuff, the forums, etc. When you have fully assimilated the info and KNOW what you need to do to protect yourself BEFORE you flash, then go ahead and flash.
The Mr Vanx guides will also tell you how to return to WM5 if you want to (why you would want to do this is a mystery).
I spent 8 weeks reading everything connected with upgrading to WM6 on here BEFORE I jumped. I took every precaution I could find, triple checked EVERYTHING, then I did the deed.
The rest, as they say, is history. Go on, you know you want to..!!
WB
There should be a third option:
"Yes I did, no issues, but not worth the effort."
WM6 isn't that big of a deal. WM6 is nicer to look at but if I wanted pretty there's the iPhone instead.
I don't regret moving to WM6 and will never use WM5 again, but I give the whole issue very little thought. Frankly I'm surprised anyone really cares.
I wonder if PC forums have these sorts of discussions about which Windows OS they are using on their computers in spite of all of the versions being basically the same from a usage standpoint over the past 12 years.
lol I think WM6 no issues is winning haha

Hmmm,
Not sure I would agree with this statement. The key reason why I moved to WM6 from WM5 was that WM5, as received from the manufacturer, was so unstable in day-to-day operation that I was on the brink of selling my Tytn and moving back to a Symbian device.
WM6 has given me masses of stability and the Tytn has stayed. Interestingly, the level of stability that I now experience has come from a fully loaded cooked ROM. I'm not sure what the experience is for others on the stock WM6 ROM; however it worked for me.
Each to his own, of course.
WB
I am still running WM5, a couple of people I work with have just upgraded thier devices to WM6 Schapps ROM and are reporting no issues.
My WM5 crashes every now and then or doesn't "wake up" from a standby, but I guess thats just something we have to live with !?! Or is that wrong ?
Apart from the HTML email support, and a suppossed speed increase I am not sure it is worth the risk of upgrading (?) My device is still in warranty so I am maybe being over cautious ?

No,
Having paid your hard eaned cash for a device you should not have to put up with crashes or unpredicatble performance/behavior.
My device had 6 months warranty left on it when I upgraded the OS. It still has 3 months to go. What are you worried about?
If you take a serious amount of time out to understand the process, potential pitfalls, preventative measures and remedies associated with ROM upgrading, and use some common sense, I don't see why you should not be ok.
The decision, as with everything in life, is yours...
WB
Fair comment WB, fair comment.
I agree with the above, most who use WM6 don't go backward to 5! It's a progression to the latest and greatest which includes better interfaces, support & development. When ever WM7 comes out, then we'll be moving forward to that one...
BTW: there have been numerous polls already, so this seems redundant.
You'll mess with it a lot the first day or two, but once you find a ROM you like, that's it!
Glad to see no one is bricked when I vote!

Is it possible to return to WM5 in case WM6 fails to satisfy
Hi friends after looking at the results I am planning to shift to WM6 in my Orange SPV 3100...Is it possible to have this OS in my Orange..Anybody plz tell me what is the difference b/w both of these OS I mean whats new in WM6 which wasn't there in WM5..

Different versions of atom

Please excuse the extreme noob question, but that's what I am!
I'm considering buying an mwg atom life, is this something different to the O2 atom that many people are mentioning or is it more or less the same device but the O2 version has it's own custom ROM?
As a more general question, would other MWG atom life users recommend this? Is there anything I should be aware of?
To me it looks to offer most of the features of many other WM6 phones with the exception of GPS, (which is a big miss for me but I guess I can use bluetooth GPS) but whilst other phones retail around £400, this is available at £150 meaning I can actually afford it!! I really wanted the tytnII but it's out of my reach sadly. Is it a question of getting what you pay for?
edit-
I've done some more research and now understand the atom life's O2 heritage, but I've also discovered the Atom V which is not much more expensive and does include GPS (at the cost of a slower processor and less flash memory). Can any user of the Atom V tell me about the performance of the GPS - is it actually any good or would I be better off with a bluetooth GPS receiver anyway?
