Terminal Services Client via Activesync

Hi all, this is my first post on xda developers (best site i've seen for xda related stufff).
Anyway my query relates to remote desktop control on the pocket pc. I've used the microsoft client (whatever its called) to connect and manipulate my xda 2 on my pc, but now I'm looking to do the opposite: view and control my pc desktop from my Xda.
I have an application that is meant to do this (remote desktop), and i'm sure it would work, though it wants to connect via gprs/wap. I am wanting to connect via activesync ( specificaly bluetooth activesnyc ).
I was told Terminal Services Client was the program to use, but I cant work it out. I've tried connecting on my pc's name and ip with the pc (xp pro) set to receive incoming connections, but i keep getting connection errors...
I can't find any help relating to this type of scenario on the net , so if anyone can help it'd be appreciated.

you have to turn it one in systems of your pc
then you have to make a connection to the pc from the pda
then you start therminal services and type in the name of the pc
and you are there

Despite being connected by activesync, my xda 2 still trys to connect via wap (preseumably because it sees the GPRS in use already).
Has anyone setup terminal service client to work under similar conditions?

Wacking another post on this to try and grab someones attention...
Terminal services client via activesync on xp pro... has anyone seen or got a tutorial? I try using my pc's name as the login and believed I have enabled everything I'm supposed to on my PC , but still can't get it to work. I'm sure I've just missed something somewhere on the PC, but can't think what for the life of me....
Any help would be really appreciated.

and maybe set the network to work or home or how ever you set it on under connections
my problem is as soon as i login with my xda2 then my normal user on the pc get disconnected and that disable activesync kicking off my therminal services client (the xda2)

I'm activesync'd with my PC so the GPRS connection is via the PC if it wasn't there I don't believe I could get anywhere with terminal services.... as I said when I try and connect it doesn't find my PC's name and so begins looking for it on the net... which for some reason it tries to look for on wap (connects itself).
What I need to / want to know is what settings people have setup on their pc, and how having a firewall effects it?

unless your pc's modem is another xda then your gprs is not going though your pc
gprs is cellphone only
under connections you need to set up a network which dont connect to gprs

I have Terminal Services Client working fine on my XDAII to connect via 802.11b to a Win 2k Server. As far as I know the Terminal Server has to be an actual server and not just a ordinary PC.

i doubt it because on this xp pro i could use therminal services
when i turned it on
the only problem was that i could not use activesync as the connection
because when i login'd with my pda i the normal user on the pc would be loged out disabling activesync

Is there a way i can use remote assistance from my xda2. What i want is to use my xda remote desktop as a remote control for playing my mp3s and vids direct on my pc

you could use vnc if therminal services will not work without logging the desktop user off and so disabling the activesync connection

controlling vids and mp3 i cannot help but what i did was that... i switch user in the win xp pro and login using the terminal client so in other words the active sync connection will not disconnect. but i don't like the idea of having the whole desktop on my PPC it sucks having lesser space to control the computer but remote desktop connection is bette but tis a demo version that i can get hold off. Thinking of purchasin the full version soon once i have a stable bluetooth connection. my BT range sucks.

Activesync over Wireless

The group is generally quiet on this one. I have a problem getting ActiveSync to work over a wireless network. The wireless network is otherwise faultless. Can browse the internet, transfer files between servers etc but cannot perform a sync to my laptop. The laptop is also faultless on the wireless network and Activesync works fine via the cradle. All firewalls and other clever stuff on the laptop disabled.
The symptoms are that a connection starts but never gets fully established. Then it all stops. I have recently performed a hard reset on the palmtop and rebuilt the image (for other reasons) but this problem has not changed as a result of this process.
I have filddled with setting the network settings to connection via the internet and from work but that doesn't seem to make much difference. I'm beginning to run out of ideas.
Any help most appreciated fellow globe dwellers!

I had it working on a previous PocketPc, and I think that it was having the ip address for the pc that made the difference for me.
You PocketPc probably only knows the name of your pc, and if it can't get that name resolved to an ip address anywhere, you are sol.
What I did was install an app called Pocket Host. It acts like the local host file on a pc. I put my pc name and its ip in the app, and then it worked.
I have since switched to dhcp which ruins the solution...

The whole thing was made more interesting because I run vmware on my laptop and so there are several ip addresses that the machine can respond to. I used to sometimes get a connection but now thanks to your excellent suggestion I can a 100% reliable connection

Access the internet via activesync

I used to be able to access the internet on my MDA Pro when connected to my laptop via activesync.
Now I can't!!!!
Could anyone tell me how to do this & the difference between work and internet settings?

have you selected the pass through function in activesync?
work allows the use of VPN connections as it is expected to use names for the machines you are going to connect to. thus disallowing the use of "." in addresses.
internet allows the use of ".", but connecting a VPN connection is difficult over it. in order to use "." vpn connection addresses over the internet, you have to start placing exceptions in to the connections advanced section.
you should set it to Internet to allow the internet pass through feature.
hope it helps and is clear enough. if you need further clarification let me know. i just had to setup my wifes 2 days ago, and i can back track how i did it if necessary.

use PC as a bridge for MDA (connected via BT or cable)
PC connected via proxy to the i-net.
on MDA the IE works fine, Opera doesn't.
any ideas??

Connecting a Smartphone to a Mac via USB.

I have been searching for more than 3 hours for some kind of driver for my T-Mobile Dash, to use it as a GPRS/EDGE Modem. My iBook is an old G3 model, so even if I were willing to purchase Missing Sync (which I'm not, btw), my iBook is not supported, as it is not a G4 or better.
I am looking for a FREE driver for OS X 10.4 Tiger, specifically an "RNDIS" driver. I am not particularly looking for speculation. I believe I have the correct modem scripts, but I can't get my Mac to see the USB Modem. Yes, I have put my Dash into ICS mode. Yes, I am running Windows Mobile 6. Yes, I have all of the updates to OS X. Yes, I have tried searching the forums (this one, and several others). Yes, I have tried "Googling it", which produced much good information, but no solutions to my problem. Although my Dash is Bluetooth enabled, my iBook is not. Yes, I know I can add a USB Adapter. I may well do that in the near future. Right now, however, I'm just looking for an RNDIS USB driver for Mac OS X. I don't need Synchronization features, at the moment.
Anyone have any ideas??
Correction: Does anyone have any "good" ideas??

I just wanted to touch this and see if anyone had any information to help. My girlfriend has a new Pantech Duo and I would like to get USB tethering working for that. I did find a couple sites that may help (HowTo: USB Internet Sharing With Linux And Windows Mobile 6), but I don't know enough about the technology to feel comfortable trying it. Thanks.

I use my wizard as a modem sometimes just using Internet Sharing in my TNT Rom. You may be able to find a .cab for it. From there just use activesync/WMDC. I haven't tried it on activesync, only on WMDC.

download wmwifirouter by chainfire or the free trial of walkinghotspot (if your handset and mac have wifi), or a micro bluetooth dongle if not.

Pantech Duo doesn't have Wifi. That was my first attempt before I realized it didn't have it, because I'm using that solution with my Kaiser.
RE: bluetooth. I haven't had a lot of success with a reliable connection. I've tried with my Kaiser and successfully configured it, using it to connect three or four times from my house, but as soon as I went on the road, I couldn't get it to connect at all, using the same steps as before. I'm sure that's either karma or equipment smarter then operator, but I'm hoping for a USB solution for simplicity (theoretically) as well as the better data throughput.

Well, if you are using a Mac then here is what i used to do before I got Missing Sync.
For Syncing contacts and dates and such i used Eltima Softwares SyncMate. Runs pretty good and can be done using the USB cable. It also provides the option to do it over Wifi, which is faster. The Full version allows your to Sync even more stuff I believe.
For Syncing files, I simply paired my phone with my mac and transfered the mp3's, jpg's, etc.

Welcome to the hell which is created when you have a Mac and a WM device!
I have been mucking around with trying to get my internet connection shared with my MacBook pro for a couple of months. Here is what I have tried
- Bluetooth PAN - There is an issue with the MacBook Pro whereby the bluetooth PAN will produce incredibly bad latency issues rendering it useless
- Modem Scripts (Bluetooth)- Have never found one which would connect....I have tried a few
- Mobile Stream (USB) - Never managed to get a connection. The support team said that they had never seen the issues I sent in logs. They will investigate and hopefully resolve in future releases.
-PDAnet (Bluetooth)- It actually works! although it seems to hang the dialer process on the Mac periodically which requires a reboot to resolve
-Wifirouter - It works although it caused issues with access points in the office and drained the battery very quickly.....even when powered from the MAC it would empty the battery. Worked OK when using a mains charger.
-VMware Fusion to XP desktop (USB) - Works and works well however you can't provide (well i havent got it working) an internet connection to the Host Mac.
At the moment I am using the PDAnet 'solution' but I am always looking for something more reliable. A usb connection would be better and more reliable as there seems to be big issues on the Mac bluetooth environment.

Hell, I couldn't even find an RNDIS driver for windows (apart from installing ActiveSync) which is why I made the Linux post.
Yeah, OSX is *nix based, but I don't think you can use Linux packages on it, what I know about macs could be written on the back of a postage stamp though.
Regarding the VMWare solution, did you try enabling internet sharing for WinXP in the VMWare session (using a different IP to the one the Mac uses) and set the default gateway of the Mac to the IP of the XP machine in VMWare?
What I mean here is that the PPC shares the connection to the VMWare windows machine via USB and the VMWare windows shares the connection to the Mac via TCP/IP.

To be honest I never really played about with sharing the virtual machine with OSX too much. I was a bit put off with running fusion like that all the time as it sucks the life out of the battery when out and about.
Until a better solution is available I will stick with PDAnet. It does put me off windows mobile (slightly) moving forward. It would be interesting to see if the Bluetooth PAN connection works correctly without the latency issue on the diamond when it is available. If it worked properly it would be the best solution.

I was reading this thread and you gave me the idea which led me to a workable solution so I thought I'd share back. I'm in the same boat as many ppl with latest MBP which doesn't work well with BT PAN (slooooowwwww). I sort of needed Fusion anyway since I'm starting to write WPF apps and performance is terrible over RDP from OSX (different subject). Anyway, here are some keys to getting this to work:
1. Setup a private network (not bridged or nat)
2. Install activesync on guest and fire up 'Internet Sharing' from WM6 device and connect device to Mac with USB cable.
-at this point you should be able to get online from the guest OS through the mobile device as previous post indicates-
Here is where the fun starts:
3. Create an advanced network connection on the guest (accept incoming connections, aka VPN connection)
4. *IMPORTANT* Go to the TCP/IP settings for the advanced network connection and setup a range of IP addresses in the same subnet as the active interface attached to the WM6 device (run ipconfig to determine). Make sure that 'clients can request their own IP address' is unchecked. Make sure this range falls outside of the IP address assigned to the guest interface from the WM6 device.
5. On the host Mac, create a new VPN connection (PPP) and set the host to the private IP address assigned to the guest (again, you can determine that through running ipconfig on the client). *IMPORTANT* Go to the advanced settings for the VPN connection on the Mac and set the DNS to point to the IP address of the router of the guest WM6 device interface.
6. Connect to the VPN from the Mac host and you should be off and running.
It works flawlessly with very good speed (relatively speaking) over the 3g connection. To get online in a pinch, now I just need to fire up the guest (which takes just a couple of seconds from a saved state), connect my device via usb with internet sharing started, and then connect to the vpn from the Mac.

Help Using RDP on Touch Diamond

Hi there, I have just installed the Remote Desktop on my HTC Touch Diamond, which runs WM6.1
I cant get it to connect in to my works PC. Do I need to do something to enable it to connect on to my PC?
Do I need to create some kind of VPN connection first before using the RDP or should it just connect using my computers IP, Username, Password and Domain name?
I note that all traffic passes through a firewall, if this makes any difference?
Please help

Alright mate.
You need to enable remote desktop connections on the target PC. Right click 'My Computer' and select properties, and go to the 'Remote' tab. Make sure that 'Allow users to connect remotely to this computer' is checked.
You may also have the issue that you're going through your work network. You need to be sure that you can get to your work PC from outside the network - this depends on the infrastructure and may not be possible without changes. You could, however, create a VPN and then you should be able to access your computer after that. You should really talk to someone in your IT department (if you have one) to make sure that your network will allow this.

I am actually 2nd line support in my IT department, but all this network business goes over my head.
I can access the firewall and try to create a mobile PPTP account to see if that works, as the VPN options on the phone use PPTP or IPSec.

I'm actually a network guy, You need to forward port 3389 to the target machine if you're behind a firewall of any kind.

Hi. I tested today by connecting to the companies wireless, that worked fine, just wont work when I use the data connection(3G).
Diekatze88, how do I forward the port 3389 to my machine, is this done on the firewall itself?
