I'm all confused as to what rom is the best to install
I installed 1.60a, and used it thinking it was the best....higher version number!
It was so cool, that I wanted to read every single post, and all the excitement you guys have had while getting it to work...started reading at 10 in the night, kept reading every post, one by one, until 4:00am next morning!!!!
I then realized, holy ****, 1.50i.xx is the latest, and is more practical!!
Believe it or not, i did a complete reinstall after that at 4:00am
I further continue reading, i read that 1.60a with a ram disk is a better option!! now, i'm all confused as to what i need to install
Somebody help!!!!
Thanks guys in advance!
And Buzz.....where the hell did you get your brains from man? Do you work at ROM Cooking division of Microsoft during day, and have an MPD...morph into a hacker at night or what???!! What IDE do you use to build ROMs for microsoft....a hex editor?? Whatever, you're absofuckinlutely rocking dude!!
Best,
San
Just my two cents...
I use 1.60a because the 16MB storage + 16 MB ExtROM are persistent. Every program and data that you install into these two are still there even if the battery is dead.
Originally 1.60a was limited as it only offered a max of 32 MB to install programs and data (16MB + 16MB). But with the ramdisk you can install many more programs. However, the programs or data installed in the ramdisk are of course not persistent, which means you will lose it if the battery goes dead.
Hence, if you value persistence above storage, go for 1.60a and use the ramdisk for additional storage capacity.
If you don't care about persistence and always carry a spare battery with you, go for the 1.5xxx versions according to your storage needs.

Hey thanks very much for your reply!
I really dont care how much device memory i have. I have a max of 10 megs of apps that need to go on device memory. The problem i faced was that, the 14 meg storage disk kept getting filled up to something around 10 megs....and i was worried where all the common dlls etc. would also end up going into this (even if i install the app onto my storage card) and end up consuming the entire storage space.
Btw, how do you gain access to other 16 meg partition? Do i need to use an ext rom unlocker or something? Where can i grab that?
Also, how do i create a RAM disk on 1.60a? I read the post, but it seems to confusing...and i didnt know what to do. Besides, i didnt have the ramdisk cab file for 1.60a. Would be great if you could mail it to me or something!
Heres my mail id - [email protected]
Once again, thanks very much!!
Best,
San
Here is Toe's file to unlock the ExtROM. Copy to PPC, start and softreset. Cheers

First of all Happy New Year to all of you!
I'm going to cook some roms in the next few days and was wondering what the max working ROM size is. I want to build a ROM with as much apps as possible. Are there any known problems if I use up almost all the ROM space? I remember that there was this "not enough free memory" bug in one of the B&B or Meschle's ROMs. That actually happened although his ROM was extra-small I think.
And talking about the max. size why not talk about all the sizes. I read that the minimum size is a little over 50 MB. In theory there should be 128 MB available, right?
UPDATE: This is what I found out, no need to read the entire thread. I flashed a lot and coud reach a maximum of 65.546 KB, 65802 was too much for it. This ROM included ONLY the OS, I was able to flash a 20 MB Ext. ROM, maybe even larger is possible but doesn't make any sense to me. The RadioROM and the other stuff uses space too, that's the reason why you can't use 128 MB for your ROMs.

If I'm not mistaken WM5 and 6 use persistent strorage - hence ROM is used for storing apps and data, whereas RAM is used for running apps and 'volatile' data. This was different in WM2003se earlier, as RAM was used for both installing apps and running apps and data. ROM was only used for the OS, and for 'built-in-storage', which was like a RAM drive (or ROM drive !!!).
So if you filled up your ROM (extended ROM) with apps, you'd not be able to install anything as there would be no space left. Correct me if I'm wrong.
PS that's why carrier's extended ROMs are only a couple of megs
Thanx for that info, but that's what I'm planning to do. Create a ROM with all the apps that I need so I don't need to install anything later.
I was only wondering because most ROMs seem to be about 50 MB in size but there is only 50 MB free space left to use. Doesn't the Artemis have 128 MB ROM?

Yeah, the atermis has 64mb ram and 128mb rom. I don't know if other space is reserved for the radio rom and the bootlooder etc. I expect that's the case. Good luck with building your ROM, please let me know how you get on.. my email is greenleef (at) talk21 (dot) com if you get a chance.
I want to build an extended ROM too, put all of my cabs in there. I'm just worried about using up valuable application storage space. But then again I install most larger apps to my storage card. What tools do you use, and do you need to CID unlock it first? I'm running the stock WM6 rom from 02.
I use Hyper Core Kitchen, Cook-Your-LLT, OK Package Creator 5.4 and BuildDSM. I also use UPX4PPC to shrink the .exe and .dll files on my pda and then copy the shrinked files back to the packages. I'm still working on that. You only need to use CID unlock if you have a CID locked ROM on your device.
I've succesfully created my first ROMs, 65 MB seems to be the maximum for the OS file, I tried a 20 MB extended ROM that worked out kinda ok. I must have made some mistake because the files installed but nothing was there afterwards to use. I think I might unlock the ext rom and use it as storage space, it's easier that way.

Interesting, but - what for? If you use ExtROM, you reserve space for installers, and even more valuable storage space would be occupied for installed executables and data files.
Perhaps you can achieve better results installing programs from (and maybe - to) microSD card. At least, easier to manage, than reflashing ExtROM.
Anothe side effect: when I install programs to SD Card, after flashing it is enough to copy several .lnk files - and those programs are ready to use, without running installers.
In my opinion, ExtROM is a place for patching OS or keeping very necessary programs, which you could not inject into OS for some reason. Nothing more.
That's what I use my ext rom for, I put my system tools and other programs in there that don't fit in the os-rom. Those are tools I always use and that I haven't deleted in years, so I thought it would be a good idea to have them on my device in case my sd card ever dies or I have to do a hard reset.

I like the idea of having apps and cabs in extrom, If I can figure it all out I plan to do it. I still use Cabinstall from 2003se on my Dell axim, as I find CABS going missing after i install them. I use PIM backup for PIM, and SPB backup for cloning my working rom with manually installed apps. All big apps go on storage card, which usually don't need registry keys so they're happy run from there - even TOMTOM6.
As far as my MicroSD giving up on me, I use symantec ghost, take an image of my SD every couple of weeks, and leave the image on my laptop.
One thing I really would like to do - remove all the useless .exes and things from my image... If I can free up 10meg from my ROM, I could unlock the extROM and use it as a storage area like you mention.... I think ROM is a lot faster than SD....
To begin, i'm really sorry if it has already discuss because i searched for these problems and i didn't find any threads (maybe i'm blind )
so, my problem are there :
- after a custom rom flash (i tried FRE and WWE, it doesn't matter), i've got a lot of freezes. At the beginning, i thought that was manila but even i stop it, it does again. When it happens, i can't do anything else, i'm obliged to SR
- times it works well (if i can say that , when device is turn to sleep, i can't unlock it. I explain : when i switch on screen, i slide to unlock and then it goes again to sleep and if i try again, it does the same again !
I tried some things a lot of time : HR, SR re-flash, re-HSPL... and each time, it's the same thing
The only rom works it the last official one (i lost the HSPL each time too)
EDIT
some new test results : (for me only at this moment)
- in manila 1921, 8 and 16 GB cards are accepted without any problem
- in manila 1922, 8 GB card is accepted with any problem
- in manila 1922, 16 GB card isn't accepted ! freeze and unlock problems
i repeat that it does even if sense i switch off, so the doc tab issue seems not to be a good way...
END EDIT
EDIT 2
LINK TO STERNAS ROM
above a link to the only rom works. Thanks to Sternas (and waiting if he wants to explain it precisely to permit other cookers to include issue)
END EDIT 2

Yes, there are a lot of people, having the same problem. Myself as well
But we couldn't find the solution for it.
I tried different cooked roms, I formatted the sd card (fat32), I took out the sd card, I tried with or without sim card, but the device still freezes.
In case of original roms it works without freezing
Original ROMs also freeze

I disagree - I find that in the mornings, the phone the radio has gone off and nobody can phone me (I charge the phone all night). I am on Rom 48.
Hi Will,
You are talking about custom roms FRE and WWE are they realy custom or do you talk about the stock roms?
Maybe it's good you explain how you flash the rom and explain how you use the rom.
Do you use the rom default or do you install applications?
Which applications you are using, a list would be great.
And you can also explain this:
* Are you using HSPL or SSPL?
* Do you flash from storage card or do you use your desktop?
* Did / or did you not remove storage card during flash?
* Did you hardreset after flash?
* Which roms are you talking about, I mean which versions?
The more details you give the more people can verify if they have simulair problems/ software that could cause this issue and the faster you will find what is causing it.

Hi Laurentius26,
i'm sorry if i didn't precise all things you ask because i used to flash my different device for a while (since the first diamond) and i begin to have a little experience on it. So, i think i use the good way
To explain, i use to do this :
- copy the leoimg.nbh on the root of SDCard (previously formatted in FAT32) and i precise it is a sandisk microSD
- two methods then : test from the microSD (restart with the volume down key pressed) or from the PC with the CustomRUU.exe . I precise again that i've already install HSPL from Bepe and Cotulla (thanks again to them)
- after device restart, i do a HR, then i follow the config wizard and i do a SR.
and then, i do nothing, just set hour and date and the problems listed above appear, without any time to install or custom anything
for the rom, i confirm too that's not stock roms i tried but for example, Xannytech Evolution 1.0 RC1 or rom from French cooker Seya
So, i don't think it is a method problem but maybe a little bit different hardware than all of you (why ? i don't really know)
Let's go for your analysis !
thanks
I can give you 3 suggestions how you can find the cause.
Try flashing with Custom ruu but no storage card inserted.
Actualy you could try to use the rom for a day without your storage card and see if the problem persist. If not you can put the storage card back in and continue testing.
Yah and second suggestion is trying another custom rom and see if the problem persist.
If the problem still persist after these steps I would flash a stock rom, one time without storage card inserted and one time with.

I will try to re-install another custom rom while i will eat my sandwich
i'll give you more news after
i've just tried to flash with freyberry_premium_V5.3_23518 and then it works well !!!
does it mean that my phone doesn't support rom further 1.48 ?
have you any idea about that ?
No I would say the two roms you mentioned earlier probably have a bug in rom which causes the freezing and you should contact the chefs.

in fact, it's not a problem of rom version because problems comme back again, even with the freyberry_premium_V5.3_23518, i can't unlock HD2, it return to sleep before i unlock completly...
i try another rom to see
just a information, when i use customRUU.exe, it always says me that i change my image version from mine to "1.48.kwbr"
with all the different rom, i always have this message ! is it OK ?
Edit : forget this, i was wrong. I did the same and so, i obtained same version ...
I'm facing the same problem with cooked rom. But I test the cooked rom by copying a big file into my document folder, and left with about 10M in main memory, files in HD2 are easily corrupted and HD2 freeze.
- flashing stock 1.48, and then cooked rom with hard reset, HD2 can not pass the copying test.
- flashing stock 1.61, and then cooked rom with hard reset, pass the copying test, and my HD2 still functioning after one day of use. I realize that the radio for 1.61 is newer, version 2.06.
I tried to install a FRE custom rom based on 2.02 and then it works until i put the microSD card in again.
After this, freeze and sleep problem come back. So, is there a problem with 16 Gb SDHC Class 2 MicroSD card ?
thanks
it was not far to work well...
i flash without MicroSD, then install SD card hotfix from HTC and it seemed to work for 5 minutes.
i try to recover my contacts with pimbackup from my microSD and then FREEEEEZE : obliged to pull out battery
i'm fed up with this problem !!!
another new and question for all :
it seems to come from micro SD, so, someone have same of mine ?
micro SD class2 16 GB from Sandisk

Yes I am using the same SD but I am observate a little bit different behavior. MY HD2 freeze and nothing can be done. I soft reset my device but the boot up doesn´t finish again. It stops at the white HTC screen and showing me the version numbers on the left bottom. I have to hard reset my device to use it again. I had this two times with dutty´s V0.3a and the implemented Radio 2.06 using HSPL.

As you get your problems with all ROMs I guess it's either your sd-card or your device.
I suggest you first try another (smaller) sd-card. My 8Gb works perfectly.
I am also using a 8GB card (Kingston - Class 4) and had no single freeze or lock-up since the beginning.
As I thought about switching to the 16GB SanDisk card as well I am very interested in the result. If it's either a sd card or device issue.
Best regards
i totally agree with you, i think now it's a SD problem but what i can't understand is :
i use this card since i had my touch HD (the first one) and there is never a problem
i change my phone to HD2 and so put my 16 GB in HD2 and then : no problem too
it's only since i try to flash with custom roms and not with stock roms, so it's not really a sd problem but a problem between SD and last roms, am i wrong ?
As The Title Suggests, Is There Any Way To Install A ROM Onto A 16GB MicrSDHC (class 10) Instead Of The Phones Internal Memory?
I 'Googled" It For Several Hours, Unfortunately Did Not Find An Answer.
Let Me Explain Further As To What I'm Really Trying To Accomplish. I Want To Flash A(ny) ROM Onto The MicroSD Card So I Will Have The Entire Internal Memory Free On My G1. And Then (if at all possible) Somehow Use The Internal Storage As Extended RAM.
Even If This Seems "Close To Impossible", Could Someone With Enough Knowledge (a dev?) Explain How Something Like This "Could" Be Accomplished??

As for installing a rom onto sdcard (even on ext2 partition as it is being done on the HTC Fuze/Diamond/Topaz/etc windows series phones), it is completely possible, but it is very slow.. i don't see why you would want to do that even compared to NAND install if you have lots of ram
I used to be a developer for the HTC Fuze (Touch Pro) and made a 2.2 aosp SD-ext rom, it still isn't as fast as the G1 even though it has slightly higher specs: 288 ram, msm7201a (same cpu as htc dream)..
You can't extend the RAM, but you can make it swapspace. It would kill the internal memory very quickly because it is only yaffs and has a limited number of read and writes...

Google Android rom's or Operating systems have rules and limits, I do know androids 2.2 did not allow system files to run outside /system folder, now it's allowing more as you see lot's of rom's using /ext (linux partitions) I do not know all the limits, but do believe there has to be a part of the rom in internel memory to be able to boot sd-card
