Next version of Windows Mobile: Derek Snyder, Microsoft employee, gave this presentation which was under NDA and can’t be discussed in detail. I can tell you that I have seen the next version of Windows Mobile (not Windows Mobile 7) that is scheduled to ship to manufacturers in the 1st quarter of 2008. We saw it running on current hardware, but that does not mean that wireless carriers or manufacturers will necessarily provide the update to consumers. Personally, I think this is the OS that Windows Mobile 6 should have been and I think that consumers will be quite pleased with the functionality and features of this next update.
I found out this Here
So, the xdains here will be able to port it to all devices hopefully.
wont it just be like having win xp and making it look like vista. no real changes just look
No it won't be like changing WinXP to look like Vista... because there are MAJOR differences between XP and Vista.
At the very least theres an entirely new sound and graphics subsystems, all new memory management systems, all new security systems... anyways far too many to list here! but you really should learn about whats different before passing judgement!
ahhh, it's not any where near the coolness of iPhone. I wonder when microsoft going to implement the gesture to its application. I have been microsoft long time fan, hate it to switch provider.
another blog (who was present in Amsterdam) i just read said that along with the new WM6 look, the WM6.1 or the upgrade will have new applications.. among those are : group or team calendar (maybe an outlook calendar update), wherein you can simultaneously see multiple calendars and agendas (from different people) allowing schedule and agenda synchronization between the two (super useful if you have a partner and needs to easily squeeze a meeting/date between two crowded agendas).. no more asking "are you free this afternoon?".. and an application called "Oops! I'm late" (funny name), which uses GPS and mobile internet to automatically pinpoint your exact location, assess nearby traffic and geographical situation, and automatically computes your ETA (estimated time of arrival) based on calendar appointments.. and it AUTOMATICALLY sends out emails and text messages to people in your appointment, notifying them that you will be coming late along with your ETA and the current traffic situation at your location.
very very nice.. along with that.. is a major visual overhaul! i hope it'll look like the glassy vista style interface seen in microsoft demo site here
good news!!!
For the love of GOD, please, PLEASE update that pos Pocket Outlook. I beg you.
Anymore screenshots??? i really dont see MUCH of a difference?

no screen shots are possible or any other info (as of what the real WM6.1 upgrade interface looks like and what are its new features), except those already given by the bloggers who were present at the Mobius event at Amsterdam.. they were all sworn to a NDA or Non Disclosure Agreement.. meaning no information, other than those agreed to be disclosed (the 2 applications namely Team Calendar and Oops! I'm Late - these served as a sneak peak/teaser) should be leaked out or else, those persons will be legally liable to face the law.. they can say many things about the new look in general adjectives such as beautiful, revolutionary and long awaited, but you can't force them to tell the specifics or their asses will be kicked by Microsoft BIGTIME..
so as of now.. we only have speculations about the NEW look, based on what we have seen earlier and the rumors running around the net (the Windows media center-like carousel like that in the T-mobile shadow or the Palm 500v, the integration of Vista Side Show, and a new GUI effect)..
if you'll be patient.. i can feel that this new WM6 will surely be presented to the public at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) this coming January..
hmm sounds cool! + i would be really happy if i could sync my stuff with integrated vista apps and not just outlook..
I'm very ready to give it a try next year...the sooner the better for us!!!!
Anyone think M$ would have released this update free were it not for the iPhone?
Well I'm looking forward to seeing this.
Come on people - if we're asking for things we can't get without people getting into legal issues (i.e. Screenshots, additional details) why not go all out! I personally would like to request a leaked rom!
I am really glad that I have chosen the WM platform for my phone. It was so much fun being able to upgrade from the very original WM5, then the various flavours of WM6 ROM. My phone is one year old now but it still feels new to me.
I don't know of other phone platforms which let me do the same.
is there going to be honeycomb 3.0 apps & games to take advantage of the screen size? like the ipad?
hope it will be
well this confirms it..it does..
In a statement posted Tuesday on the Android developer blog, Google announced the official release of the Android 3.0 SDK. Third-party developers can now publish Honeycomb-compatible applications for the upcoming Android tablets—including the Motorola Xoom, which is expected to debut this week.
Google released a preview of the 3.0 SDK last month, giving third-party developers an early look at the platform's new tablet user interface and an opportunity to get a head start on application development. The new APIs were still subject to change, however, so developers were blocked from publishing their Android 3.0 applications until the official SDK release.
Google says that the APIs are now in their final form and that developers are free to start making their Android 3.0 applications available through the Android Market. As we discussed in our recent look at the SDK preview, the new version of the platform introduces some compelling features that will make it easier for third-party developers to build tablet-friendly Android applications.
Thanks to the early availability of the SDK preview, some developers could already have tablet versions of their applications ready to go for the Xoom launch.
But will the apps from 2.2 work on 3.0 and scale automatically, as they did on the SGT?
I own the Xoom. As for games and all apps. It kind of depends. I can play anything I had before, but some games are designed for tablets and some are not. Those that are not have horrible graphics, slow response, off resolution, etc.
What about productivity software?
- Touchdown for Exchange (for Exchange e-mail). Short question here: does Xoom support Exchange, as in Calendaring, accepting, declining meetings and all that through ActiveSync?
- Office Talk Free -> does it scale up well on the screen? This is for Office Communicator and is essential for me.
- Word processing - how is it?
No one using this software?

Hello guys,
For those using the official 2.3 rom I would like to shar some apps I find very useful and I think some might also miss from custom roms:
- QuickPic
Very good Image and Video Gallery and almost identical to MIUI's.
The Gallery available in stock rom is just a big failure and almost nude of options.
This one is just absolutly complete and good!
- Quick Boot
Miss the 4 way reboot menu from custom roms? Well not anymore....
- Moboplayer
A powerful video player.
- Go Launcher EX
For me the best Laucher. Very custobizable, easy and fast.
Also, many many many free apps, widgets, themes, etc
- TunIn Radio
Very good online radio app.
Well, hope you enjoy.
If you wish to share your apps with others just post

why is 360 a bad company?
I'm using this alternative launcher:

it's fast, light and highly customisable.
Also I'd like more ligux tools, instead of quick boot for reboot menu:

My opinion will be subjective, so please read the following stories with your clear mind. If you still trust 360Safe/Qihoo company, you can still use their products.
Here's some true stories occured in China internet history:
An evil man - HongYi Zhou(周鸿祎)
Evil #1: At the early internet age in China, there was a IE browser helper object called 3721 Internet Assistant - the most notorious malware developed by 3721 company - HongYi Zhou's company. Evil behavior: force install, hard to uninstall, ad popup, etc...
Evil #2: Yahoo China acquired 3721 company at 2003, and 3721 Internet Assistant renamed to Yahoo Assistant. It should change to nice under a big company, right? NO! it still act as evil as it was, all the evil behaviors on 3721 still exist on Yahoo Assistant.
Evil & Ridiculous #3: Zhou left Yahoo later, and become CEO of an "unsafe" company - 360Safe, then 360 claim Yahoo Assistant is malware! What kind of man (especially a business man) will do that? You created a son and raise it with your full energy, then one day, you said your son is a freak, and you will kill it, an evil man did this! I think this touched the bottom line of moral as a human being, and Zhou did it.
An evil company - Qihoo/360Safe company
3QWar2010: Year 2010, the QQ-360 war (we called ThankYou/3Q war by transliteration) was initiated by Qihoo/360Safe company. Basically, 360PrivacyGuard monitored any process named QQ.exe even if you rename notepad.exe to QQ.exe, and give its users an alert said QQ.exe is scanning your files etc... and 360QQGuard act like a trojan, it inject QQ software to remove advertisment in QQ software and blocked autoupdate service of QQ and replace the default browser launcher in QQ to their own 360Browser. What kind of "safe" company did such an unsafe trojan software? 360 did! If you ask why, I will say because their boss is Zhou. Fortunately, Qihoo lost the lawsuit at last.
I won't say "once a criminal, always a criminal", but I would say "dog eat ****, it never changed, it never will"(狗改不了吃屎 in Chinese). If you're an Android fans before and today you suddenly becomes an iPhone fans, you should check your dream first to see if you are 《Inception》ed by Leonardo before you're sure you really becomes an iPhone fans. That's my personal opinion on this company. For me, I never trust this man and this company, and you?
That's why I don't suggest you to use any software products developed by 360, personally.
Apology for my bad English, wish you can understand it.

Thank you for your explanation
Even though I don't know anything about HongYi Zhou(周鸿祎), I have to agree with him about the 360safe company. I've been working with computers since back in the 286(80286) days, both software and hardware wise. I'm also an American living in China, and I've used a lot of "chinese" computers while I've been here. This 360Safe software is really strange stuff. They use it in place of IE here (not that I like IE) and for other stuff. I don't know what it is about this software, it just acts strange and my years of computer experience tell me to stay away from it.
Let me give you an example, the one that sealed the deal for me. There is an android app by 360safe. I won't write the name because it's probably banned on XDA forums and I'd rather not get banned for writing it. It is a program for downloading android warez and will check for new update on those warez. It's essentially an illegal version of Android market, they even say so themselves:

With huawei handset, if you are like me, bit tired that every custom rom has that one thing that does not work, or even if you are extremely like me and decided in the end to just keep the original .32 kernel Froyo, Root Explorer or ES filemanager on rooted system is a must.
All those huawei's default apps, crap, so much crap, and some even not usable for international users. Worse even, you cannot uninstall any of it. And some things are confusing, like having a huawei music, and android default music app. Personally I removed both replacing music with newest google music. I personally like rootexplorer for the job, you can explore inside APK files and find what ones have .huawei in their com line so you do not accidentally delete actually useful piece of software.
Thanks for the tip with quickpic. I really long after briefly trying MIUI wanted a seperate app for gallery (I would like option to choose manner the pictures are sorted by) - and now I probably found it.
Thanks all of you very much for these very usseful sharings and applications and programs...
QuickPic is fantastic app.

FriendCaster facebook is also a great app. If you check running apps you will se that official facebook app uses 24 or more MB of RAM and stays at running processes even when you dont use it while FriendCaster only uses 10MB and goes to cached processes if you dont use it. And it also has nicer UI than official app
thanks for quick boot i need this...

Hey everybody!
I am (unofficially) working on a Grooveshark App for Win8. I am trying to contact somebody from Grooveshark to make this official, integrate their API, etc. But here is some look at the UI as of now, and I will be updating this post as I proceed. I have a Splash Screen, A useable UI take from the Win8 API and Icons (planning to add live ones)
Regards,
Tom
P.S. Attached Screenshots.

Don't kill the messenger but they run from a Flash Object/Streaming. I also don't think they have the license for streaming on Win8 or maybe mobile platforms. I wouldn't expect your dreams to come true just yet or at all.
Grooveshark offers a number of API's to interact, so there's no need for Flash.
Grooveshark itself runs a version based on html5. So, html5 is the prefered way how metro-apps should be build.
I think there are plenty of options how this could be done!

Source: http://developers.grooveshark.com
In order to stream, you must use Flash for the Widgets. Unless your App is Desktop-based (non-Metro) and even then we still don't know what the outcome will be, Flash isn't likely going to be permitted and if it is, like we've heard previously, it will be very limited and a list of "accepted" sites/content will be enforced.
Yes in IE Metro you can download/use Flash by side-loading the installer but as we've all heard, a light weight Flash is probably going to be permitted in the final public release, which most likely will mean you can't implement it in your App.
Sure, the API exists for streaming but is it supported with the licenses Windows 8 Codecs Offered? Which we hear is going to be limited. Also, you'll have to host their Ads or enforce only premium users to use your App. Question then is, how do you make a profit from it? Unless you're selling it to them, such a large project you should profit from it.
As for grabbing the Artists and stuff like that via the API, yeah that exists but really they're offering nothing better than anyone else. The only reason you'd want a Grooveshark App is because you want to play the content of the Artist/Album you're reading about and unless Grooveshark can change their license agreements & whole way of doing business? I would hold off putting any steam in to this project but just a suggestion from a developer to another developer as we don't know the Codecs W8 will be shipped with and if Grooveshark will have supported it.
Thanks,
Lance
Thank you for your ideas. This may need a bit more time for groove shark devs to look into this

I love Mozilla, but from what I've read it doesn't seem like there is really any point to Firefox OS.
Other than flaming me, could you please list some specifics as to why it's beneficial?
I've talked to a lot of people in person about it and they all seem to talk about potential to grow like Android. The main problem I see with this is that whereas Android filled an obvious gap in the market, Firefox OS is trying to carve a niche in now heavily fortified waters. The fact that Windows Mobile both says they'll be happy for 1% of the market, buys off Nokia and pays off devs to port apps, it should be a pretty clear sign this will be a major challenge for Mozilla when a company with a scrooge mcduck tower of cash is piling money on the issue and still getting limited results.
For the record, I'm going to install it on my of my old devices just to play around with it but in the meantime if anyone could pose a good argument for Firefox OS then I'd all ears. It'd be nice to know the time I'll spend setting it up is worth more than just curiosity and Mozilla sympathy.
Or just flame me and call me a noob
in my opinion, we definitely need firefox os. if it will be of any advantage for your user experience, is heavily dependent of its success. but it's the only smartphone os, that uses a really open approach. since most apps are shortcuts for browsing to a certain web page on your smartphone, basing the whole os on a browsing engine makes a lot of sense. and it makes lots of things easier for devs.
It seems promising to have a fully custoimizable and open source OS for low end phones. FOS could extend the lifetime of many phones which is a nice perspective instead of throwing away functional hardware.
FirefoxOS is:
Customisable, free
Hardware UN-requiring
This means that low end phones can use the fos because they don't need powerful hardware, and poorer people in countries like Brazil or Ghana can use modern phones for little price. It's not really meant for our newer phones high-end.
defender of the Open Web
Most important is that Firefox OS seems to be the most tangible defence to keep our Open Web environment from becoming closed. With Firefox OS, the millions of new users from Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Central / South America who are now just starting to buy low cost smart-phones will enjoy using, coding and Creating in Java and HTML 5, and be free to ignore 5.1 with its restrictions such as DRM.
Right now, the Web, Free and Open as we know it seems to be dying! Here's what Danny Obrien of the Electronic Frontier Foundation wrote on October 2 (link to full article after the quote):-
… where you cannot cut and paste text; where your browser can’t “Save As…” an image; where the “allowed” uses of saved files are monitored beyond the browser; where JavaScript is sealed away in opaque tombs; and maybe even where we can no longer effectively “View Source” on some sites, is a very different Web from the one we have today. It’s a Web where user agents—browsers—must navigate a nest of enforced duties every time they visit a page.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/10/lowering-your-standards
I think why people should bother with B2G/Firefox OS is because it's not as complicated as Android - Android has a bunch of stuff that most of the time people won't even bother using so that's one benefit with B2G... Apart from the fact that it's not very hardware dependent, it's also simple and fast and aims at open source which Android seems to be lacking nowadays...

I would love to see FireFox as an mobile /tablet platform, because it has given middleware which can run webapps. which i feel is far better than any other achievement unlike any other platform where middleware are heavy sometimes VM's to run app in UI. Firefox gives ability to run apps with PC like standards(HTML5, CSS3) etc.
i personally tested and best thing is there search is quite competing with google search for Android. try one .
Lot of other competeres try making webapps as there UI framework but fais may be because there inexperience, i am hoping Firefox with there vast knowledge can create a ecosystem where mobile ui/ PC ui will became synonyms. in that case nothing except a good webkit will solve all issues. till then we can wait.

In 2002 and 2003, the world was saying the same thing about Mozilla's browser. What's the point? IE 6 was pretty amazing (seriously!) when it came out and most Web developers I talked to were happy to have one target client. That sentiment was very different after 2005 when Firefox demonstrated to the world that the Web was stagnating. Most Web developers changed their tunes and started demanding Microsoft release newer versions with modern capabilities and erase IE 6 from the face of the Earth.
Mozilla is a non-profit dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what's possible with Web technology while putting users at the center of their computing experience. We are here with no other agenda. We're not trying to sell ads. We're not trying to sell hardware. We're not trying to grow subscribers. We're trying to put users in more control and to expand the possibilities for the best operating system ever created -- the Web.
That's enough reason for me.
- Asa
(15 year Mozilla veteran)
As a developer I love it because I don't need to code twice (at best) if I want my app to work on multiple devices, screen sizes, OSs, future OSs, etc. The WEB is the platform so my app can easily intercomunicate with other webapps regardless of their underlying technology, because the WEB has standards. This will result in better and rich apps with better and rich services WITHOUT being enslaved by any platform/SDK specifics.
FirefoxOS is the next common-sense step on mobile technology and I'm pretty sure we are going to see Boot2Webkit, Boot2Blink, from the other companies... and if we don't, we will see more companies following the same fate as Nokia, Microsoft...

I've been trying hard to get our teams to develop for it but there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm for it in China...
I have the Mozilla Flame phone and currently it's stable version is Firefox OS 2.0 and honestly, the improvements they've made make FFOS more unique and beneficial for the user. It's almost up to scratch, just a one or two releases and the features will be there. The speed already is there.
to be free from the grasps of a company who spys on your every move
As a user since version 1.0 on a ZTE Open, I have to say that I don't see a single compelling reason for an end-user to buy a FFXOS device, other than possibly price (debatable: many Android handsets fall into nearly the same price point, and the Lumia 520 is basically the same price as the ZTE Open C and better in every possible regard).
I get that it is an incredibly important vision that Mozilla have for the future of HTML5 and apps, but that matters most on the back end for developers and those who provide apps and services. I also understand that Mozilla have made great efforts to ensure that Open WebAPI is as painless as possible for developers to use, and that using very few lines of code, you can write powerful solutions. These are all fantastic things, and the web and technology in general stand to benefit massively from this.
However, from a purely end-user point of view, I find the UI/UX to be lagging severely behind every other platform, not to mention the relatively poor functionality of the stock apps. They do nothing other platforms don't do better.
The performance is abysmal, even on the Flame, and the battery life fluctuates wildly and does not impress me at all given my usage pattern.
I've filed endless amounts of suggestions for expansion and improvements to UI/UX and 99% of the time am met with blind reticence.
The feel I get is not that this is a platform for everyone by everyone, but a platform for a very small subset of the population (which if you analyze what the platform ships with stock and how they market it, Mozilla seems to have no idea who this population is) controlled by a team with a death-grip on it, fingers in their ears, blindfolds on, chanting "This is perfect, this is perfect, you don't know what you're talking about!".
People's tepid response to the platform and its slow adoption rate should stand as testimony to the fact that the platform is far from perfect.
****, the keyboard STILL sucks complete ass even on v2.2 nightly. Something as fundamental as the primary ****ing input method still isn't even done half-assed correct, so what do you think the rest of the experience is like?
Such a frustrating platform... I really wanted this to be the Phoenix that takes the principles and ideals of webOS from the ashes and sets the world of technology on fire, but it looks more like a poof of smoke at this point.
I'll continue daily-driving the Flame, I'll continue filing bugs and suggestions, and I'll likely continue to pull my hair out in frustration. Hopefully at some point all of my frustration will amount to something positive and I'll be able to whole-heartedly endorse this platform to other end-users and evangelize for it. Currently, that is not even a remote possibility.
Because we should be more principled and not support companies that pay no tax.
I wonder how many people are actually using FFOS as their only phone.
I have a ZTE Open, I am downloading and compiling FFOS builds once every few weeks, hack around just for fun.
But I have an Android for my daily use.
